Bushy Run Battlefield is the site of an important battle fought between British and Native Americans during Pontiac's War (1763-64). It encompasses 200+ acres with a small museum and gift shop. During the season, different events are held. Tours are offered for groups of all sizes and ages. There is a nominal admission fee which can be found on their web site. Www.bushyrunbattlefield.com. My husband and I attended a special event for a ghost walk at the battlefield. The turnout of participants was much larger than expected by the volunteer organizers, but they managed to deal with the long line for admission, signing of waivers and organizing the crowd into groups. Their hard work was appreciated, but for the next such event, I would suggest having a separate table and register for the admission fees and keep the souvenir purchases only in the gift shop. We were assigned to Group 7 and wandered around trying to find the group. There were a great many people asking where their group would be. Next time, maybe have group areas marked with signs. Each group was to have a guide for the historical facts and another person who was with the paranormal group conducting the walk. Our history guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. I apologize for not remembering his name. He is a participant in the annual re-enactment of the battle. His stories of the history of the era and battle were very informative and entertaining. He told us about ghostly encounters that others have had. The lady with the paranormal group gave some direction to all of us and did the best she could with a large group. To some, it was a lark while others were very serious. Husband and I fall somewhere in-between. I didn't have any contact with other worldly beings, but I had one woman come up to me with a meter and say I had something/ someone beside me. I wished the energy well and told them to go in peace. It was an enjoyable evening, met some nice people and we would go again. The volunteers were amazingly patient and kind. Thanks to them all for their hard work. read more

I was wandering around following the sites from 'Uncovering PA' facebook page. I love history so stopped at the Battlefield. I watched the video, which I rarely do, and found it quite informative and interesting. I never knew this battle actually saved Fort Pitt in Pittsburgh. I enjoyed the informative museum and learning more of our history and Pennsylvania's impact in shaping this country. read more

Very cool place. I enjoyed the battlefield and hiking trails. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because they closed the parking lot at 4:15, and the visitor's center was closed for the season, so I didn't get to go inside and see the artifacts. There is a different parking lot with no gate for after hours visitors. read more

Like an earlier reviewer said, Bushy Run Battlefield isn't exactly the first place most tourists would visit. Very few people really know about this battle, yet it is pretty significant in the history of colonial America. The culminating battle of Pontiac's Rebellion, Bushy Run was a huge victory for Henry Bouquet and quite possibly saved the British colonies from being overrun by a large confederacy of Native Americans. Bushy Run Battlefield today is a small and peaceful state park located in rural Jeannette, just outside of Pittsburgh. A visit should last between 1-2 hours and is recommended for students of history or those interested in colonial America. Start with the small museum where you can watch a brief video highlighting the battle and view artifacts from the conflict. The museum does a great job devoting attention to both the British and Native Americans who fought here. Grab a walking brochure and hike the short loop around the battlefield. There are several spots of significance and on a nice day, a walk through the woods will be enjoyable. Spend some time at the last stop, the location of the "flour bag" redoubt upon Edge Hill. A granite monument marks the spot. Overall, the battlefield is well worth a visit for those who are interested. One can still see how the topography helped determine the outcome of the battle. The battlefield is somewhat difficult to find if you are not from the area, so make some preparations before hand. If you are seriously interested in colonial history or the French and Indian War in particular, I would highly recommend visiting Fort Necessity, Braddock's grave, the site of Braddock's defeat, Fort Pitt Museum, Point State Park, and the Pittsburgh Regional History Museum in addition to this site. All are located within a reasonable driving distance. Also, check out Allen Eckert's "The Conquerors," which describes Pontiac's Rebellion and the Battle of Bushy Run in more detail. read more

What do you mean you've never heard of the Battle of Bushy Run? Having grown up on Bushy Run Road and spent many a-summer at Girl Scout day camp at the park, I can tell you that the Battle of Bushy Run was fought during Pontiac's War (after the French and Indian War). And that's about it, other than that the Indians didn't stand a chance against those Brits with guns. I did always think it was pretty neat that a local landmark showed up in our history books when I was a kid. It's been awhile since I've been back, but I will always hold a fondness for this state park. There's a small museum with artifacts from the battle that have been uncovered over the years: muskets, arrowheads. Under the giant wooden pavilion I was treated for my first bee sting and learned how to cook grilled cheese sammiches on the grill. It was at this park where I first discovered my love of hiking and learned the "look but don't touch" philosophy of state parks. And if it weren't for this park, I may not have ever held a musket ball in my hand and thought how much it would have sucked to have been shot with one. read more

Bushy run has always been a yearly thing for me my entire life, it's something I always look forward to and be sure to set time aside for. Not only do you learn a lot, but you have great volunteers and a beautiful once battleground in the French and Indian War. Not only can you attend bushy run for their reenactments but for their haunted history hayride in mid-October where you can ride in a hay wagon, learn of our past and be attacked by Indians in the wood! Afterward food and drink is available at the concession stand, be sure to dress warm because it's usually chilly! Also, year round people are free to take walks and bring their dogs in on the many great walking trails. Fantastic place. read more

i grew up in claridge a small town -1000 residents then -which borders the park. as a child i could walk to the park and w/ friends picnic there or just walk or run over the trails .that was in the '40's. i recall it was hilly and quite wooded. i have been back many times over the years and am still impressed by it's little known historic significance and now it's peaceful natural beauty i realize it's not a " biggie" but well worth a visit if in the area. in addition to the museum they added a monument commemorating the battle. .i and several family members purchased bricks as part of the fund raising project for it read more

Bushy Run Battlefield is great for History buffs, or for those wishing to imagine what is might have been like to live in Early Colonial Times wihin the wilderness of rural Pennsyl vania. There were times of peril and uncertainties. The Native Americans were defending their territory, which was promised to them in the "Treaty of Easton". The encroachment of settlers west of the Susquehanna River threatened the Native American's way of life and even their existence. If you have a chance to visit the Battlefield during the first weekend in August, you will be treated to a realistic reenactment. The battle is portrayed in morning battles and afternoon battles. I believe that the morning battle at 11:00 AM gets you closer to the action and gives you a taste for what really happened . This was at the very end of the French and Indian War and marked the turning point in the War. Also, to correct an earlier review the Native American force was quite adept at woodland warfair and they had guns and ammunition supplied by the French. read more
