The Hotel Shmied Von Kochel is located close to the centre of Kochel, and just a very short walk…read morefrom the train station, which is exceptionally useful, given that there are no taxis in Kochel. The hotel dates from around the 1700s, though renovations have been completed as well as some new additions, and so the place feels as though it is from the 1980s. There is an eclectic decor to the place. My room had a fairly nice view of the mountains but the room itself was very sparse. I felt it could have done with some imagination with regards to decoration, which was basically just a white wall. The bed was comfortable enough -- fairly standard. Breakfast was advertised as a feast, but was more of a boiled egg and some cold cuts and bread affair. The lady who perhaps owns the hotel works very hard though I think they could so with some extra staff to keep the place running more smoothly. I enjoyed a few meals in the restaurant attached to the hotel, but the service was very slow. In all a good stay and worth it for the price, but I would also recommend seeing what other options are available.

The outdoor patio is a great spot for relaxing and you will usually find a few of the regulars enjoying a beer after a long work day. As a regular major hotel chain visitor, I was pleased to find a room in this small boutique hotel with a private bathroom. There is also a side entrance so you don't have to walk through the main entrance and the restaurant to access your room, a nice option when you don't want everyone to know your comings and goings. The owners live onsite and are easy going and friendly. They speak excellent English which is a plus. If you are looking for a taste of true Bavarian hospitality, this is the place for your vacation!

The balcony overlooked the fortress (Festung) and is large enough for a recliner a table and two chairs. The bathroom is modern, large with two sinks and a huge walk-in shower. Comfortable bed, large closet. The bells of St. Vitus and other churches welcome the day and bid good night. The breakfast is open till 1000 and is great. Local meats, cheeses, breads, eggs, bacon, sweets, local jams, honey, espresso, cappuccino, etc. A cocktail bar is attached and a great Hoff-Brau restaurant around the corner. If you want to relax, the fourth floor has a wet sauna, dry sauna and steam room along with a small gym. A kick-back area and snacks included. Too bad there was a heat wave. The location is perfect for day trips. A few hours OR LESS to Munchen, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Berchesgaden, Garmisch, Tratzberg, etc. The garage is right under the hotel and if you're tired of getting ripped off by parking fees, it's a breath of fresh air. It's nine euros a day only if you leave. Nine euros if you park and leave the car for the entire stay. Ok, so the only reason it's not five stars is, as an American and it was HOT, I would have loved a fridge. I understand though, the hotel is "green energy" the card key turns the power on and off. No power on when you leave. It's ok though cold drinks and ice are hard to find in Europe lol.

Loved it…read morevery much and the hospitality from the staff here was truly reflective of the Bavarian "gastgeber" attitude, friendly, welcoming and going out of their way to look after you. The room we had was fabulous albeit slightly dated and missing the luxury I would expect in a hotel at this price like bathrobes, plush towels and good toiletries. But everything else was on the money. Breakfast was very nice and extensive, dinner here was excellent and I loved my cappuccino soup and apple crumble. Good wine list and super friendly service. Dogs are allowed here for an extra charge and they had a nice bowl and bed waiting for our dog when we arrived with food and so on. The hotel is on a hiking trail so you can literally step out and go walking into the mountains. The views from up here is fantastic and it's very quiet during the night. All in all a fabulous experience we would happily repeat again.

The restaurant's menu is very acceptable to American tastes and the beer is Bavarian. The rooms are smaller that American hotels but well appointed and comfortable nonetheless. Well located for access to many of Bavaria's best known, visited sites: Neuschwannstein, the Zugspitze, Garmisch, And Munich as well as easy day trips to Innsbruck, Berchtesgaden and Salzburg.

A gorgeous guest house in the village of Fischbach which is about 5-7k from Bad Tölz. There is a…read morecircuit that you can follow from Bad Tölz which is about 12k through the country side and halfway through the walk is this gorgeous little village and guesthouse. They have rooms to stay and a Bavarian restaurant with an outdoor biergarten. It's very peaceful and quiet here and of course if you don't speak German then you probably will struggle. The menu is only in German. The waitresses were less friendly than I expected and barely smiled at us. The menu was extensive and included all the standard Bavarian dishes and seasonal items. I had the Bauernente (duck) which came with a salad, red cabbage and Kartofflekanodle. The duck was brilliantly cooked and the meat just fell off the bone and was moist and tender. The salad was really good and was not drowned in dressing. The knodle was moist stodgy and tasty. All in all a fabulous meal :-) Happily come back here again for a Bavarian countryside dining experience.
