Northeast Indiana is a fantastic place to find great local sustainably produced food, thanks in…read morelarge part to the presence of the Amish and some great family-owned farms.. Amidst all these, though, Gunthorp Farms stands out as the best place in this part of the state for responsibly raised, delicious meat. They sell wonderful pork, chicken, rabbit, and duck at their store, which is located right on the farm, which is also home to their own USDA-inspected processing facility. Gunthorp mostly sells to upper end restaurants around the Midwest, though, and retail sales are not a top priority. Fridays and Saturdays (check their website for hours -- they're not conventional) they sell what are basically the scraps that the restaurants won't take. This is still great meat at a great price, though. Go for the pork loin ends (real tenderloin, just awkwardly cut). If you want a whole bird, rabbit, etc. call a week ahead and order. However, the only reason I'm not giving Gunthorp five stars is that the first time I did this they forgot to do the chickens I ordered. As above, retail sales are not really their big priority, so I just wouldn't make any big plans dependent on what you're getting. They did have "freshly frozen" chickens available (frozen after two days rather than the two weeks factory farms often give them). Finally, I would be remiss not to mention that Gunthorp sells rendered duck fat for the unbelievable price of $20/gallon. Buy some Yukon Golds and make the best fries you've ever tasted!

Well, barely two weeks after I picked up a 5-pack of heritage chickens they're all gone so what…read moredoes THAT tell you?! They're just amazing. I did 3 of them at different times on the, grill beer-can style, using only salt, pepper and garlic as a rub and a smoking tube with apple wood pellets at 300F. They came out nicely browned on the outside and nothing but rich juicy meat on the inside. I generally do not favor the white meat of factory chickens because it has so little flavor. Not these - perfect on its own or in a salad of greens. And the DARK meat of these chickens - oh my! Rich and flavorful but not gamey. We baked the other chickens stuffed with two lemons and a rub under the skin of butter, garlic, salt and a little rosemary. The price of these chickens is not what you'll find at the grocery store and especially not in LaGrange IN, but they are WELL worth the premium if you appreciate fine meats and poultry and livestock that is raised sustainably and responsibly. If Gunthorp Farms offers this product for retail purchase in the future we will likely be back!
