I tried the caramel banana cake and it was so good - strong banana and caramel flavour that complemented each other well, not too sweet, not too much frosting...it was very nice. And I love the flavours that they have! I look forward to trying the s'mores cake, the matcha, and of course, the blueberry lemon. The price per slice is on the high side for cake, and each slice is quite small. Been here a couple of times for their croissants and soft serve. Love their lemon meringue croissant, it's a definite must order. The croissant is nice, soft and flaky. The lemon filling is just right, not too sweet. I've also tried their strawberry matcha pastry. Didn't really like this one that much. Tasted a bit stale, maybe because we went at night. It wasn't crispy and flaky as the lemon one. Flavour was alright. As for the soft serve, I tried their strawberry and vanilla one and also the black currant. Both very delicious. Cakes are made fresh to order and need to be ordered two days in advance. Seasonal varieties are available as well. We had the 8-inch chocolate passion fruit cake. A cute patisserie! I tried their strawberry cake and blueberry lemon cake. The slices are pretty big, since there's multiple layers of cake and cream. They're quite sweet though, since after the first few bites, it became overwhelmingly sweet. The two tasted a bit similar in my opinion though. Definitely a once in a blue moon type of treat considering the price. But wow, as someone who doesn't have much of a sweet-tooth, I found these Asian-French fusion pastries here both delicious and aesthetically impressive. The lemon meringue croissant and porchetta banh mi were my favourites. The meringue pastry had a nice tartness and, while I found a touch too sweet for me, had a pleasingly satisfying flaky-enveloping-creamy-curd bite. The banh mi wasn't a banh mi other than for its filling (do chua, couldn't clearly taste the pate/mayo if there was any) and the porchetta didn't have any crackling but the combination of the carrots, the pork and again the superb flakiness of the croissant was greatly enjoyed. The matcha strawberry danish/strudel was also quite good and a favourite amongst my friends, but to me, paled next to the lemon meringue. Worthy a try--recommended. read more

Started serving people that were standing behind us, allowing them access to remaining goods before we were served. They also allowed one customer to walk to the front of the line with her dog and get served before us, supposedly she was told to go to the front. We ended up getting nothing. The place is smaller than expected. I honestly thought there was a dine-in section when I saw the article about them online, but it was actually a narrow shop. All their baked goods looked delicious but we only tried their cakes - s'mores, chocolat, and matcha. Out of the three, matcha was the one that stood out because it was soft and flavourful. The chocolat was a really good standard chocolate cake. S'mores tasted mainly like marshmallow; the flavour profile was just really light. We received excellent service as the staffs were friendly. They made recommendations for first time customers. FYI: the cakes do sell out really fast. If you already know what you want, you should reserve it. I will be back to try the croissants! read more

I decided to try the Triple Chocolate Croissant $3.75 - it is made with dark chocolate so it wasn't overly sweet and overpowering (awesome!). I would give it a 7.5/10 as it is quite expensive and I could tell it wasn't fresh off the press with that warm & crispy croissant crunch. Had a craving for brioche so I walked in to see if they sold it. I bought a loaf (around 7/8 dollars, I don't remember exactly). The outside looked dark, as if overcooked. I sliced it up when I got home and: - the outside was indeed overcooked and a bit hard, unlike everything brioche should be. - the texture of the brioche was good but it wasn't sweet. Traditional brioche is slightly sweet. I was tempted to grab a pastry as well but based on the high price point and the small size, I decided to try the brioche first and I'm kinda glad I did. While everything looks tasty, the price range is a bit of a turnoff for me, especially considering the size of the pastries and if I'm going to be paying 6 dollars for a fancy croissant, I expect the taste to live up to the price but after that brioche, I'm not sure I want to give it a try. read more

3.5 stars. I visited this store last week and had the banh mi croissant sandwich for lunch. This is a well-designed but tiny store just west of Dundas Square. No seating at all, takeout only! The sandwich was really good. I didn't get a lot of traditional banh mi flavours but the porchetta was juicy and I enjoyed the pickled veggies on top. Would be 4 stars but the portion was tiny and expensive. Over $10 for a sandwich and coffee, which would be fine if the sandwich wasn't snack-sized. Ok so I'll admit I have a soft spot for bakeries, especially patisseries. Butter Baker is a tiny spot located in what was old Chinatown. (When I say old, I mean like the 60s). They serve traditional french pastries. So far I've had the Caramel Almond Brioche, Fig Custard Danish, and the Pear Tart. All were delicious, not 'lardy' or overly sweet. You could easily see and taste the individual layers of the pastry in the danish and tart. The brioche 'cake' had a generous portion of sliced almonds and was also light in texture. The 'bake' in all three was perfect. Price, imo, is reasonable (especially compared to what's available in the Queen west strip). Service friendly, establishment clean. read more

Love the presentation and the architecture of these puff style pastry danishes. I was interested in the raspberry jam which lingers for a few days longer than a visit to this establishment which is take out not dine in. Of special interest was the cookies and banana caramel was sold out. Delightfully I enjoyed the matcha white chocolate cookies because the white chocolate is balanced by the sensibility of green tea. What makes the gluten free plus free run egg delightful is the clean taste. Interesting is the meringue croissant and the continuously changing repertoire of pastry line up. Only point to watch for is moistness of flaky pastry where the traditional unglazed edged pastry is correct it is balanced by the englazed fruit. Not necessary to have dusting sugar unless there is a chance of losing moistness. read more

Very cute, Japanese style bakery tucked in amongst other Japanese style bakeries in the Dundas and Bay area. A bit on the pricier side, but the quality of the pastries justify for the prices. The cafe is tiny and there are no tables - just benches. Lots of greenery. Not good for big groups for obvious reasons. It's a good place to stop by after a meal to grab dessert, or to get your fix of Japanese pastries. The matcha cookies were very good. The pastries may be beautiful, but the customer service is lacking logic. I went in to purchase the crème brulee cake/pie for $24.00. I was advised by the staff serving me that the whole cake would be available in half an hour, but a whole already pre-sliced cake was sitting on the counter, which I could purchase if I didn't mind it being sliced. I didn't have time to wait so opted to buy the whole, pre-sliced cake. The manager/owner came out and said I couldn't buy it. If I wanted to buy the pre-sliced cake, it would cost me $4.95 PER SLICE, FOR THE WHOLE CAKE. I tried hard to find the logic in this. Perhaps I am paying for the service of someone who pre-sliced a cake that I didn't want pre-sliced. But because I needed a birthday cake and limited in time, was offered the whole cake by 2 staff members, who seemed to understand the logic, but then told by the manager, I couldn't buy it at the price of a whole cake and would have to wait the half hour. This was early on in the day, so unless they were expecting a mad rush of customers coming in for a slice of this cake within the half hour, the rudeness of this person only made purchasing from PABLO next door, that much better. read more
