A venue chosen for dinner during our 3-day stay in Harrison Hot Springs last week. A first-time…read moredining experience there for us. While in Hope, we had decided that we were going to try this restaurant during our Harrison stay. Daughter and I found the restaurant had moved to a new location since our last trip, and into a building that we were familiar with, and much larger than the former one they occupied previously. With the signage and all, it looked good to us. We called one afternoon to ensure they would be open at the time we wished to dine, and in a couple of hours were there and settled in for what we hoped would be an exciting new dining experience. We were not disappointed. Our host/server was very friendly, cordial, and sure helpful. We went in knowing quite little about Indian food, but had studied their menu beforehand back at the hotel, and took it with us to the restaurant. We showed her the dishes we had checked off as 'possibles' and sought her suggestions. This worked out perfectly -- we discussed all dishes, narrowed them down to a nice variety, and ordered. For a first time experience, I believe we did very well. We ended up with a rather nice selection of dishes - from appetizers to main dishes - a good variety of introductory tastes, and wonderful flavours. We had ordered 'mild' - the foods were definitely spicy, but about perfect for the three of us. We hope to have the opportunity to dine there again, and now have a good idea on how and what to order, and are looking forward to it. I know one thing for sure, we will each have a samosa - the samosa we shared this time was so good!! Thanks to our host, her good service, and the exciting food we tried, we much-enjoyed our dining experience at the Royal King Indian Restaurant.

The garlic naan was good, and the masala was excellent--definitely the highlight of the meal. The samosas were okay, though not particularly memorable. The entrées were also beautifully presented in attractive copper serving dishes. Unfortunately, the service became less enjoyable as the meal went on. We were repeatedly encouraged to order additional drinks and dessert, and the upselling began to feel uncomfortable rather than attentive. The music was also quite loud and included frequent profanity, which did not feel family-friendly. We were asked to remove our used forks from our appetizer plates and keep them for our main course, when fresh silverware would have been more appropriate. At the end of the meal, we waited an excessive amount of time for our check even though it was clear we were finished, and eventually had to go to the front ourselves to get it. There is definitely potential here, especially with some very good food, but with so many other dining options available, this is not somewhere we would go out of our way to visit again.

Fortunately, it wasn't hard to find a couple Indian restaurants when we visited Whistler, BC. So on our first night there, we got take-out from Indian Masala Bistro. There was a large group of us, so we were able to order a variety of dishes - butter chicken, chicken curry, chicken masala, palak paneer, lamb korma, and a couple other dishes that I don't remember. We also got lots of garlic naan, of course. Unfortunately, their entrees DO NOT come with rice. So you need to order rice separately. (Minus one star for this.) When we ordered, we asked for medium heat level, but we barely noticed any heat (mild disappointment). Despite this, everything was very flavorful. The portion sizes were pretty generous and we had LOTS of leftovers for the next day or two. Located at the Hilton hotel in Whistler Village.

Ordered a bunch of different dishes for a big group (beers, mango lassi, 6 different types of…read morecurries, rice, naan, etc.) Quality of food was good but wasn't incredible. For example, the pani puri mixture felt a bit dry, and the curry ordered spicy could've been more spicy. Aloo gobhi cauliflower also seemed masked with other things, there could've been more/bigger cauliflower presence in the dish. You're also charged for rice and naan. Presentation on mango lassi was pretty. Service was okay, friendly but nothing to write home about. For example, it was a big group so the dishes were just dropped off on one end and we had to move them ourselves instead of the server placing them at the correct locations. Ambiance was good, with both booth and chair seating. There was no wait for the big group which was nice.

I was not expecting this restaurant to be as big as it is. The space here is truly massive, and…read morewhile it was mostly empty when we came at around 2:30 - I can picture the hubbub of activity that would be present during peak dinner hours. This does seem to be a highly recommended place to eat Indian food in Surrey. I had the Non-Veg Thali, which isn't on the menu, but the waitress helpfully let us know about. It's very customizable - and I went with garlic naan, rice, two tandoori chicken pieces, lamb vindaloo, and shahi paneer - all in a single plate! Pretty much everything was excellent. I'm not even sure where to start. The garlic naan was fantastic. Soft, buttery, with just a slight hint of garlic and lightly charred on the outside. I could honestly eat this by itself and be satisfied. Garlic naan is a staple of what I order whenever eating Indian food, and this might be the best one I've had. The shahi paneer was also great; tomato-forward, creamy, and the paneer was super soft. The lamb vindaloo was a real standout. It was immensely flavorful - not lacking for spice at all - but you don't just taste capsaicin - you taste all the cumin, cardamom, and garam mixed in with the curry. But the lamb itself is the best part of the curry; it's so tender and juicy. The absolute peak, though, was the tandoori chicken. These were two large dark meat pieces, which were cooked to absolute perfection - retaining so much juice and fat. The skin was a perfect deep orange, seasoned with a ton more spices. It's like eating fried chicken but without the breading, but this was arguably even better. The masala fries were the only thing kind of a miss - as they lacked any masala. The price of the thali was only 23 CAD. That's a pretty insane deal for how much food you get - I was unable to finish everything on my plate despite being very hungry. Honestly two people could share this and be satisfied. When you consider how much sharing and new orders for bread, rice, and curries goes on at your typical Indian restaurant, this is crazy good value. Overall, I would classify this as the best Indian food I've had outside of Asia. 9.5/10
