We did an overnighter in Julian and found JGR Hotel to be the perfect place to stay! It's on the Main Street that runs through town. This historic B&B was built in the late 1800s and maintains the charm and decor of that era. Even though It's an old and creaky building, I found it very comfortable and welcoming, which I give credit to the staff for this! All rooms on the 2nd floor are really tiny. Our room, #9, seemed to have the roomiest bathroom. Bed was comfortable. Room was clean. No TV, so me and husband actually spent time downstairs playing dominos and talking to each other (haha!). There are only a few outlets in the room, so don't expect to keep your phone near you if you need to charge it overnight. Rooms on the first floor are roomier, but husband doesn't like staying on ground floor, so we opted for the smaller room. For breakfast, grab a cup of coffee, sit down and the staff serves you breakfast at your table. We enjoyed a nice breakfast of granola, Belgian waffles with Fuji apple sauce topping, fruit and yogurt. Access to the building is with a key. I felt very safe. Parking is whenever you can find a space on the street. Overall, we had a very nice stay here.

If you're in the mood to step back in history, this is a very nice hotel. Entrance into a period parlor for check in... dining area for 2-course Breakfast and Afternoon Tea (included). Rooms are not large and power outlets are limited ... (no TV which was actually a blessing to escape). Tall comfortable bed and excellent plumbing. Compliments to all staff .. friendly, personal and professional ... all in one. Enjoyed our stay, but mid-August is down-season, so most attractions and stores are closed. We'll be back, though.

Day two breakfast, spinach frittata, vanilla yogurt and fresh fruit along with Julian's famous apple cider.

We so enjoyed staying at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel. The staff were very accommodating and our room was comfortable and very clean and quiet. The breakfasts were so amazing and delicious, five stars for sure. We strongly recommend staying here. The only slight negative would be is that you have to park on the street since the hotel doesn't have it's own parking area. But we never had a problem finding parking close to the hotel. We appreciated the history of the hotel. Originally called Hotel Robinson, it was built in 1897 by Albert and Margaret Robinson, African American pioneers who also ran a popular restaurant and bakery. It became the oldest continuously operating hotel in Southern California and served as a community hub for miners and travelers, eventually becoming the Julian Gold Rush Hotel.

This bed-and-breakfast is truly a gem! The rich history, the warmth, comfort and hospitality make it a must stay place if you are in the town of Julian. The food was delicious, the bed was comfortable, and sitting on the front porch watching the people walk up and down Main Street was such a pleasure. I will definitely be back.

So I just read their response to my review. By no surprise they blamed the guest. If you read other reviews you will see the same, this is their M.O. Everything is about deception. Their business practices on gift certificates, it's all about deceveing their guests. I will still stand by it, if you charge more money when using a gift certificate it's deception! They claim 5% bad reviews and seem to be kind of proud of that, but when I looked at the numbers 5 star reviews vs 1and 2 star it's approximately 12%, what a surprise, more deception and nothing to be proud of! They say I went back 10 years, I could have went back further to ilistrate how being rude to their guests for more than 10 years is the norm and not the exception! One would think that maybe they would actually want to treat their guests with a little more kindness and respect! When reading other reviews they said the same thing about us as they said about others. How we made other guests feel uncomfortable. We met one couple that evening and enjoyed playing games and drinking wine with them. They did complain to us how rude they felt the night manager was. They also sought us out to say goodbye at breakfast and let us know what a great time they had and enjoyed meeting us. (So much for making other guests feel uncomfortable). Not once did they mention what I wrote about the front desk employee, the Owner or night manager was incorrect. Not once did they apologize for their rudeness! If anything they took an attitude that you can't please everyone. This is so not true. We have stayed with them at least five times. In the past they had an extremely nice and professional Manager. One year my girlfriend even brought her a Christmas gift, so no we our not the guests from hell. We just know how the GUEST should be treated, with respect and kindness not deception and rudeness! We were also told the Manager left 2 years ago and things have changed, boy have they changed for the Worst!

Historical plaque at the entrance - very interesting!

I definitely think everyone should experience exploring Julian and staying at this charming hotel at least once. Full of history and cozy Victorian vibes - and it's supposedly haunted!! But that isn't surprising considering that this is the oldest operating hotel in SoCal! Built in the late 1890s for Albert and Margaret Robinson, it was a very popular place to stay - especially bc of Margaret's home cooking. The staff and owners have definitely put a lot of loving care in preserving the charm and small touches that bring the era alive inside the walls. The kind lady that checked me in (Cris I think?) was so enthusiastic about the hotel and town - so full of info - it was great! And she let me go upstairs and check out the available rooms to choose from which made it even more fun! All the rooms are beautifully decorated- and I so very nearly chose the haunted room 10 to see if all the stories were true but I chickened out haha!! And the room I chose, room 12, had a nice view of the mountains and main street with all the shops and action lol. My room was very clean and cozy, the bed was super comfortable - I slept great. But the bathroom is insanely small - even by European standards. The shower was so tiny I'd stick out of it if I moved my arms lol. But you trade comfy mod cons for nostalgia, experience, charm and history - and it was definitely worth it for my short stay! Breakfast is included with your stay and it's a wonderful way to start the day. They give you a generous bowl of their fantastic homemade granola and milk to start, followed by the special of the day - on my visit it was spinach quiche and it was very nice. Came with fruit, yogurt, and a lovely homemade bread. I was stuffed lol! Prices were VERY reasonable - I chose to base myself here while exploring the Anza Borrego desert - which was a bit of a drive each day but it was so incredibly beautiful- all along windy mountain roads with wide open vistas - definitely worth it. The location was great too for being surrounded by tons of shops, restaurants and pie shops. They have a game room and tons of games available to the side of the lobby - as well as a wrap around porch with lots of rocking chairs to watch all the tourist activity. They don't have any parking lot or elevators etc - definitely not handicap accessible. Parking is all free street parking and the town can get busy so sometimes it's a challenge - but the town is small and walkable and in a pinch you could use the paid parking lot across the street.

I've had my eyes on staying here for years and am so glad we finally made time for it! We stayed one night during the summer and had the best time. The hotel is conveniently located in town close to shops and restaurants. The service was unmatched and we loved the breakfast with the famous eggs and granola! The beds were comfortable and each room has its own shower, washroom and toilet. It was nice to have ac during the warm summer nights. We encountered a guest that smoked all night and despite the issue, the owner was apologetic and offered a discount for a future night. We look forward to visiting again for a future stay!

    Main Street from hotel.

The staff is absolutely the bestwe were celebrating a big birthday for our friend Mary. The hotel was beyond accommodating. The beds are luxurious, although the hotel is quite old but so charming and takes you back to a bygone era. Sitting on the porch chatting with friends & other guests. The breakfasts are amazing & again service is wonderful. You'll enjoy every moment of this gem! Viva Gold Rush Julian hotel

Dawn and Ed are great communicators, they had cookies ready for us on arrival, and Dawn met us to check us in and give us info. We stayed in the Rose room, which is roomy, has a heater and an old fireplace which they give you wood for. Bathroom/shower has a separate heater, and the room has its own patio, but we found it's much nicer to explore the grounds and sit on one of their many benches and chairs spread throughout the hillside with nice views. There are cows across the street that are friendly, and we went to say hi to them in the mornings and feed them tall grass. And don't forget to step outside the cottage at night to gaze at the Milky way galaxy...you heard me correctly...not just stars, you can see the faint outline of the Milky way because Julian is a Dark Sky community and Ed and Dawn's place is very dark at night...epic! Breakfasts are a delicious two course meal of a fruit dish and main. Added bonus is chatting with Ed and Dawn about Julian history and getting tips on places to go/eat. Ed and Dawn were also accommodating to bring our breakfast to their outdoor patio since my fiancé had some smell sensitivity to the food cooking in the main room (but also, it's kind of nicer to sit outside, but then you miss communing with the other guests) The main breakfast/communal area has a bunch of books and movies you can check out and take to your room, along with microwavable popcorn...we watched Gone with the Wind on VHS with the fire burning at night...such a charming and memorable time! Thanks Dawn and Ed! Our only recommendations would be: 1) for those with allergies, getting some cotton bed sheets rather than microfiber/synthetic material (we asked but they didn't have any at the time) 2) while we loved the charm of the themed rooms, there is just a lot of stuff, i.e. old teddy bears/dolls on shelves, old style window curtains that are more for show rather than necessary since the windows already have blinds, these things just make the room feel crowded and also gather dust. But maybe that's just our minimalist preference? 3) The room is advertised with a Queen bed, but seemed more like a Full (perhaps it's a European Queen?), just seemed on the smaller side. In any event, we'll probably try to book the Apple room next time which has a King size bed (which was already taken during our stay) and has a view into the woods. 4) the couch/futon cushion is detached from the wood frame and has a tendency to slide around, and it's also bigger than the seating area, so you could end up sitting on the cushion but not the frame, thus falling down.

A complaint has been filed with the US Department of Justice as Nan has openly discriminated…read moreagainst my husband for having to have a hearing service dog and used wildlife specifically deer around the cabin as an excuse to charge us a lot more to stay in the larger "pet friendly" artist loft instead of the smaller 2 person cozy cabin at Strawberry Hill we requested. It's against the ADA requirements- Q. Can hotels assign designated rooms for guests with service animals? A. No. A guest with a disability who uses a service animal must be provided the same opportunity to reserve any available room as other guests without disabilities. They may not be restricted to "pet-friendly" rooms. As for her flimsy excuse about the wildlife even though I assured her we follow the service dog rules of bathing her before trips and keeping her on a close leash. She never has barked EVER. We have never heard her voice! She was trained to not chase or even look at other animals she turns away. She is a well trained service dog from two well know legitimate organizations and is licensed. Even though by law we don't have to show her I offered to show Nan the CA service dog license and her training paperwork and card my husband carries showing who trained her and that she is allowed in ambulances and hospitals too. I explained all the tasks that she does to help my husband with his hearing loss and explained why we wouldn't allow her to ever be close to wildlife for her safety too. All in all Nan went on and on about how she had to close off the cabins before and after the dates because of covid and aerosols and the cost of insurance, the cost of doing business so it appears as if she used the excuse of wildlife and bad past experiences with people lying about pets being service animals to make us pay more by booking the larger pet friendly cabin. I kept saying my husband's service dog is not a pet and she wouldn't listen. 27 minutes on the phone I listened to her discriminate against my husband before asking one more time if since she was insisting we stay in the large pet cabin with the 3 beds we don't need could she at least just charge us the cost of the strawberry cabin since we aren't supposed to be penalized with increased charges because of my husband's disability and she said No. So I finally said well I'm going to report you and hung up. I did double check just in case there was a change in the last few weeks but there wasn't. I called the CA state park in Julian and spoke with the ranger which is the same wildlife, same forest as Nans property and they assured me that service dogs are still allowed in cabins there AND even on trails. He assured me that my husband's service dog would not interfere with the deer under her cabin at all!!! That the people staying in the cabins and even her 6 cats roaming the property could interfere more. Her excuse was a flimsy way to try to extort more money out of us. Maybe someone who was trying to pass a pet off as a service dog would have been fine with this since she does have no pets on her listings BUT a legitimate well trained service dog is NOT a pet and we know the law and we are proud of the amazing job the dog does that is potentially life saving. It's sad we are missing out what appears to be a cute cabin but I'm glad we aren't monetarily supporting disabled discrimination.

The hosts, Chuck and Nan, live close by, and make themselves available, but are not doting. They have carefully crafted this cabin, a true labor of love, to be enjoyed by guests. Less than ten minutes to town, but you feel like you're out in the country, away from everything. Stellar A+ views, comfortable furnishings, a wood-burning stove as the centerpiece, with all the amenities for cooking, relaxing, and simply embracing the sense of wonder for creation and nature. Unlike any place we've stayed in Julian, where we've been coming for New Years for the past decade. Highly recommend!
