Charming B&B! Like stepping back in time, the hotel is filled with antique furniture and historic touches ( never fear the plumbing is modern!) As noted in other reviews the rooms are small- my husband and I are NOT small, we managed! The tall bed was comfortable and there was a helpful step placed in the closet so I did not have to resort to a high jump to get in. The bed was comfy. Breakfast was ok- I have a food allergy and staff had to scramble to accommodate it. I didn't think of it when we made the reservations, so that is on me. STAFF WAS AMAZING! Warm, friendly and filled with recommendations on where to eat ( dinner- and of course APPLE PIE!) We all agreed (we were traveling with others) that we would like to come and stay again. When you take into account the afternoon tea and a full breakfast, it's downright budget friendly! read more

My wife and I stayed in the Julian Gold Rush Hotel for two nights few weeks ago. Here are some pros and cons: Pros: Price, our room was $155 / night. That would probably pay for parking in San Diego hotels. This is a historic building and an interesting attraction in its own right. Breakfast is included and it was terrific. Food is expensive in Julian. A similar breakfast at a local restaurant would be $20. The staff are great. I met several day managers and the night security guy. They are all terrific people. It is really like staying in someone's home rather than a hotel. These is no TV. I think that belongs with the pros. The location is great. Right in the middle of town. Cons: Our room was tiny. Really tiny. Use the drawers and closets for your stuff so you don't trip over it. A side effect of the smallness of the room is that the heater/ac struggles to control the temperature . The design of any heater/ac unit presumes a room volume. The room is so tiny, the heater's built in control parameters are way off. Parking, parking is "street parking" and on a weekend, it's every man for himself. You may have to drag your bags a block or two. ---------------------- So would we stay there again? Absolutely. I would probably spend a bit more and get one of the small number of larger rooms, if available. If you want to relax and read, I cannot think of a better place. One thing I should mention, if you attempt to make reservations on line, there are half a dozen fake web sites imitating the hotel. They are put up by a dodgy travel company. They are really good imitations. I even an experienced computer user could be fooled. It is best just to call them. read more

Avoid this place. Treated with attitude as soon as we arrived. Front desk was snarky and rude. I knew with this being a tiny place, the experience would not improve so we left. They kept my money while whispering to the next guest to wait, as my room might be available to them. read more

WARNING TO PCT HIKERS: Breakfast is from 0800-0930, so if you plan to head out for an early start to the trail, the staff will not provide anything to-go. As a PCT hiker, I am paying the same nightly rate (rate includes breakfast) as any other customer... I understand if they are short staffed, but this seemed like a blatant attempt to kick out hikers before serving them breakfast. read more

We did an overnighter in Julian and found JGR Hotel to be the perfect place to stay! It's on the Main Street that runs through town. This historic B&B was built in the late 1800s and maintains the charm and decor of that era. Even though It's an old and creaky building, I found it very comfortable and welcoming, which I give credit to the staff for this! All rooms on the 2nd floor are really tiny. Our room, #9, seemed to have the roomiest bathroom. Bed was comfortable. Room was clean. No TV, so me and husband actually spent time downstairs playing dominos and talking to each other (haha!). There are only a few outlets in the room, so don't expect to keep your phone near you if you need to charge it overnight. Rooms on the first floor are roomier, but husband doesn't like staying on ground floor, so we opted for the smaller room. For breakfast, grab a cup of coffee, sit down and the staff serves you breakfast at your table. We enjoyed a nice breakfast of granola, Belgian waffles with Fuji apple sauce topping, fruit and yogurt. Access to the building is with a key. I felt very safe. Parking is whenever you can find a space on the street. Overall, we had a very nice stay here. read more

If you're in the mood to step back in history, this is a very nice hotel. Entrance into a period parlor for check in... dining area for 2-course Breakfast and Afternoon Tea (included). Rooms are not large and power outlets are limited ... (no TV which was actually a blessing to escape). Tall comfortable bed and excellent plumbing. Compliments to all staff .. friendly, personal and professional ... all in one. Enjoyed our stay, but mid-August is down-season, so most attractions and stores are closed. We so enjoyed staying at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel. The staff were very accommodating and our room was comfortable and very clean and quiet. The breakfasts were so amazing and delicious, five stars for sure. We strongly recommend staying here. The only slight negative would be is that you have to park on the street since the hotel doesn't have it's own parking area. But we never had a problem finding parking close to the hotel. We appreciated the history of the hotel. Originally called Hotel Robinson, it was built in 1897 by Albert and Margaret Robinson, African American pioneers who also ran a popular restaurant and bakery. So I just read their response to my review. By no surprise they blamed the guest. If you read other reviews you will see the same, this is their M.O. Everything is about deception. Their business practices on gift certificates, it's all about deceveing their guests. I will still stand by it, if you charge more money when using a gift certificate it's deception! They claim 5% bad reviews and seem to be kind of proud of that, but when I looked at the numbers 5 star reviews vs 1and 2 star it's approximately 12%, what a surprise, more deception and nothing to be proud of! They say I went back 10 years, I could have went back further to ilistrate how being rude to their guests for more than 10 years is the norm and not the exception! One would think that maybe they would actually want to treat their guests with a little more kindness and respect! When reading other reviews they said the same thing about us as they said about others. How we made other guests feel uncomfortable. We met one couple that evening and enjoyed playing games and drinking wine with them. They did complain to us how rude they felt the night manager was. They also sought us out to say goodbye at breakfast and let us know what a great time they had and enjoyed meeting us. (So much for making other guests feel uncomfortable). Not once did they mention what I wrote about the front desk employee, the Owner or night manager was incorrect. Not once did they apologize for their rudeness! If anything they took an attitude that you can't please everyone. This is so not true. We have stayed with them at least five times. In the past they had an extremely nice and professional Manager. One year my girlfriend even brought her a Christmas gift, so no we our not the guests from hell. We just know how the GUEST should be treated, with respect and kindness not deception and rudeness! We were also told the Manager left 2 years ago and things have changed, boy have they changed for the Worst! read more

I definitely think everyone should experience exploring Julian and staying at this charming hotel at least once. Full of history and cozy Victorian vibes - and it's supposedly haunted!! But that isn't surprising considering that this is the oldest operating hotel in SoCal! Built in the late 1890s for Albert and Margaret Robinson, it was a very popular place to stay - especially bc of Margaret's home cooking. The staff and owners have definitely put a lot of loving care in preserving the charm and small touches that bring the era alive inside the walls. The kind lady that checked me in (Cris I think?) was so enthusiastic about the hotel and town - so full of info - it was great! And she let me go upstairs and check out the available rooms to choose from which made it even more fun! All the rooms are beautifully decorated- and I so very nearly chose the haunted room 10 to see if all the stories were true but I chickened out haha!! And the room I chose, room 12, had a nice view of the mountains and main street with all the shops and action lol. My room was very clean and cozy, the bed was super comfortable - I slept great. But the bathroom is insanely small - even by European standards. The shower was so tiny I'd stick out of it if I moved my arms lol. But you trade comfy mod cons for nostalgia, experience, charm and history - and it was definitely worth it for my short stay! Breakfast is included with your stay and it's a wonderful way to start the day. They give you a generous bowl of their fantastic homemade granola and milk to start, followed by the special of the day - on my visit it was spinach quiche and it was very nice. Came with fruit, yogurt, and a lovely homemade bread. I was stuffed lol! Prices were VERY reasonable - I chose to base myself here while exploring the Anza Borrego desert - which was a bit of a drive each day but it was so incredibly beautiful- all along windy mountain roads with wide open vistas - definitely worth it. The location was great too for being surrounded by tons of shops, restaurants and pie shops. They have a game room and tons of games available to the side of the lobby - as well as a wrap around porch with lots of rocking chairs to watch all the tourist activity. They don't have any parking lot or elevators etc - definitely not handicap accessible. Parking is all free street parking and the town can get busy so sometimes it's a challenge - but the town is small and walkable and in a pinch you could use the paid parking lot across the street. read more

I've had my eyes on staying here for years and am so glad we finally made time for it! We stayed one night during the summer and had the best time. The hotel is conveniently located in town close to shops and restaurants. The service was unmatched and we loved the breakfast with the famous eggs and granola! The beds were comfortable and each room has its own shower, washroom and toilet. It was nice to have ac during the warm summer nights. We encountered a guest that smoked all night and despite the issue, the owner was apologetic and offered a discount for a future night. We look forward to visiting again for a future stay! read more

If you want to go to bed at 8 or 9 o'clock ok. The most boring place ever. Made us leave the "social room" at 9:00 so they could set up breakfast. We met a fun couple and were playing a game. Had to go to our room. They should bring staff in earlier in the morning to set up so guests can enjoy their evening together. Bummer! Been here 5 times...won't return. So disappointing. Only a thin quilt on the bed as well. No blanket. And it's so cold! I am very disappointed in this hotel. I will stay elsewhere next time. I don't recommend staying here. read more

EDIT: Because of course this owner, as has been seen in all other reviews, can accept no responsibility, I will, for the last time, clarify: I asked one staff member about an adjustment, then asked her to speak to the owner for clarification, then was greeted by the huffiest person in customer service. No was "stared down" or threatened. I stated "I am shocked that this is the type of 'service' is given in the time of online reviews," and I stand by that statement. The fact that this hotel feels comfortable calling that a threat or bullying is frankly a joke. Maybe speak to your staff about audible gossiping if you're so worried about bullying This hotel is gorgeous, the history is impressive, and it feels like a true immersive experience. THAT BEING SAID, I would be careful if you have any limitations or special needs. Because you are unable to view the interior or garden of the hotel without booking, it's hard to know what to expect. The hotel is outfitted with stairs to every room, whether inside or outside. Furthermore, the cottage, which cannot be seen online, includes a great number of stairs and unsteady ground to traverse. Not to mention is cloaked in darkness. If you happen to get to the room, need to change rooms to their significantly smaller, cheapest rate room again, upstairs (after booking their most expensive), don't expect any sort of support or reimbursement. While I understand the hospitality industry's need to make money, I guess I just can't understand having zero empathy for an 83-year-old woman's needs and physical restrictions. The lack of reimbursement, even for just the second night, for the room difference was never explained to us and while I attempted to explain our position to an employee (I believe the owner!) I was told: - I should have called them if we had limitations - I shouldn't have booked through a third party because they have to pay them a commission - They are a historic site ("Have you ever even been to one?!" She sarcastically snapped), and therefore I should have expected there to be stairs..? It should also be noted that the hotel sold out night two, giving the owner double the rate on the higher priced room. Again, everything here is wonderful, aside from the customer service, which, frankly, matters. Now, this isn't to say that every employee was problematic. Valerie, thankfully, was friendly and gracious, a joy to speak with, as was the night watchman. Had this other woman, who I was lead to believe is an owner, even apologized for the difficulty or confusion, I'd have bumped this review to three stars. Oh, I also forgot to mention said employee (owner??) walked back to another area of the hotel and audibly spoke negatively about her discussion with me. None of this feels professional. I need to add that, upon reading other responses from the owner (not the one I encountered), I'm sure there will be a defensive and inflammatory rebuttal. I would also urge you pay close attention to this type of behavior as well. read more

It's located in the heart of Julian and within easy walking distance of all the shops and restaurants, which makes exploring the town incredibly convenient. My wife and I first came here for our anniversary in 2016. We loved it so much that we've been coming here regularly ever since. Even after my wife passed away in 2024 I still come to stay at this charming hotel several times a year. The hotel is a beautiful, historic building with many of the original fixtures, such as gas lamps that have been converted to electric. Many of the furnishings are antiques. The lobby and parlor are great places to relax, read a book, or play one of the many games available. In the evenings coffee and tea are available in the parlor. The owners and staff are fantastic! Very friendly, kind and helpful. The breakfasts are delicious! My favorite is the waffle with spiced apple, served with fresh fruit and a bowl of granola. I love their homemade granola, which can also be purchased to take home. My wife's favorite was the spinach Florentine, also served with fruit and granola. They alternate between these two choices every day. The rooms are cozy and decorated in vintage style. (There is no TV in any of the rooms, so don't expect that.) The first floor rooms open to the front porch and are the most accessible. There are chairs on the porch where you can sit and watch people going by. The upstairs rooms are accessed via a narrow staircase. There are two detached cottages. The patio cottage has one room plus the bathroom (with a shower). It also has a gas fireplace and a nice, covered porch with chairs, overlooking the patio. Access is through the lobby of the hotel, and then a path out to the cottage. There are a few stairs on the stone path, and a few stairs up to the cottage porch. There is no direct street access. The second cottage is called the Honeymoon House. It has two rooms. A living room with a sofa, table and chairs, a rocking chair, and a gas fireplace. The bedroom is roomy and has a closet-sized nook with a vanity. The bathroom has a tub, with a shower head and shower curtains. The Honeymoon House can be accessed from the street or through the parlor. The hotel and cottages are shaded by several large trees. There are small trees in planters on the hotel porch, and lots of greenery in front of the hotel. The charm doesn't end with the hotel -- Julian is a lovely place, with many buildings dating back to the 1800s. You can take a guided tour of a real, gold-rush era mine, or visit the Julian Pioneer Museum. There are lot of small restaurants to choose from, and many unique stores to browse and shop. There are hiking trails in the area, and you're just a short drive from the Anza-Borrego desert or the Laguna Mountains. read more

I just spent the night here as part of a graduation road trip with my teenager. We used to come here a lot. It's been a while, but I am always so impressed with this hotel. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. The building is beautiful and it is so rich with history. It feels like stepping into the past and is such a breath of fresh air. The room was very comfortable and clean. We slept great! Also, the breakfast was incredibly delicious. We had so much fun playing games in the parlor. Stayed here a couple of times now, and each time has been wonderful! We've stayed in the family room for Father's Day weekend and the cottage earlier this year in January, and the rooms are quaint, charming, and idyllic. Wonderful experience from beginning to end. This historic bed and breakfast was the icing on the top of our lovely visit to Julian. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted and made to feel like guests of a friend's home. Beautiful decor and furnishings from the lobby to our cozy room (each of the rooms had their own unique style). In the morning, we enjoyed a homemade breakfast (the raisin bread was my fav) and a walk around the backyard patio. Amazing bed and breakfast with a caring staff! Hospitality feels like home. The rooms are so cute and are all decorated differently.. each has a bathroom too! Rooms are small, but it's perfect and sets you back in time. I loved all the old antique furniture and vibe. Keep in mind that people were shorter back then!! So everything was perfect for my height (4'11) but my boyfriend felt a little bit like a giant lol (6 ft). There is breakfast included to your stay every morning.. it's SO GOOD!! & there is also tea/hot chocolate available at 5pm, + coffee throughout the day. You get your own key to come in through the front door and to your room (very safe). Room 10 is also "haunted" but honestly we didn't have anything happen.. we slept like babies!! My wife and I stayed in this hotel last night the 29th of March and throughly enjoyed this place. We have walked by this hotel so many times when we were in town from San Diego. The rooms were very nice and the bed was comfortable and the staff very friendly, the breakfast was good and sitting with the hotel guests and getting to know them was nice. On this, our 5th or 6th stay at the Gold Rush, we remained consistently pleased. We even had my parents book too, to experience the property and town together. We always love the period-decorated rooms (especially those with the front porch view of town); the ambience of the parlor and sitting room; the simple joy of unplugged board games and tea in the afternoons; and the reliable delight of breakfast each visit. We hope to be back in the fall, as we look forward to all the town has to offer -- especially when we're able to do it from this charming, centrally-located B&B. My second time to stay at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel --- loved it so much! This time we stayed in one of their bigger rooms upstairs... the room was SPOTLESS. The staff always amazing. It was chilly and dark and the manager on duty told us, she would be making Hot Apple Cider and putting games on the table, the pot belly stove was going... and it was so nice. Now, to talk about the homemade breakfast in the morning included in the price. What a wonderful treat again. I love this place so much and right there in the heart of Julian!
