Butterfield Market is a small grocery and prepared food store in the UES, on the SW corner of 78th Street and Lexington. Walking into the store from the corner entrance, directly in center there's a beverage station with coffee and tea dispensers. About half the store is dedicated to prepared foods--on the left are chilled and packaged desserts, on the right are warm and cold mains, salads, cheese and charcuterie, sides, sushi, convenient packaged foods (crackers, breads, candies, snacks). Toward the middle of the store are a few aisles of jarred, canned, dried goods, teas and coffee sachets, condiments and spices. Towards the south side of the store is a butcher counter, more prepared chilled foods, salads, wraps, chilled bottled drinks, followed by the fresh produce area. At the front of the store are a few registers you check out. They keep the store very clean and tidy, the shelves are well-stocked. Staff are friendly and on point. I used to enjoy Butterfield Market, but I feel the quality has declined. The grilled chicken Caesar salad I recently ordered had lemon-marinated chicken, which completely overpowered the salad and didn't belong in a traditional Caesar. For a high-end specialty market, I've never understood why they only offer pre-made cold sandwiches and won't make sandwiches fresh to order. If I'm paying premium prices, I'd rather have a fresh sandwich than one that's been sitting in a refrigerator. I also find it odd that they've expanded to two locations while still offering a very limited selection of baked goods and freshly prepared foods. this is just reviewing their dot cakes!! so so viral and honestly i understand why - it's a super visually appealing and has so much texture. the sprinkles are really what make it, super crispy and crunchy. however the cake itself truly tastes like box cake and i didn't like the cake or frosting. but worth a try! read more

Came here to try their froyo on a weekday at around 6 and there was a short line. Since there was only one person working at the express window, the line moved very slow and I still waited for around 30ish min. I got the plain with pistachio drizzle and blueberry and my husband got their peanut butter crunch. Their froyo was only okay. It's kinda like a 16 handle but with more expensive toppings. The peanut butter crunch is with vanilla yogurt and it was kinda melty. Neither of the yogurt tasted very special. The whole experience was truly a patience test... The store wasn't set up very well. The express window wasn't really express when there's only one person working there. Not mentioning the people waiting in line in the store can also get yogurt and the topping bar for the people that are getting the froyo in the store is the same topping bar that they used for the express window and they are always in each other way. There was also a lady that was standing at the window and not doing anything? The guy that was working there was also very slow. If you want frozen yogurt in the area, I recommend Madison Fare or even just pinkberry or 16 handles. This place was not worth the wait. read more

On this episode of finding the best grocery store rotisserie chicken, we have Butterfield Market in the Upper East Side. It's the land of Alo Sweats, Aritzia Puffers, and $10 rice and peas. Their whole vibe is trying to be like the Erewhon of NY. I must note, there is an asterisk on this review. They only had a cold rotisserie chicken that ran $20.99. When I asked the guy at the deli counter if they made any hot tissis, he said no but he could heat it up and it would still be good. As annoyed as I was at the pricepoint of $20.99, I respect the hell out of them for wanting smoke. Let the record show, Butterfield is ducking NO smoke. One can't help but wonder why they only sell a cold rotisserie chicken in the first place. What is the best use case for that? Kind of hurts my head... Nonetheless, I got the heated up chicken and took it over to central park to rip the deceased bird limb from limb. Things started off well with the breast, as I felt it was going to land in the low 7 range. I was shocked how decent it was for it being heated up. But then, the leg came a long. It was essentially inedible. Plywood dry. Sahara Desert dry. The dryness from the reheat reared its ugly head. I winced right as I bit into it, simultaneously reaching for the $5 Voss water I had just bought. Final score was a 5.3/10. Terrible. But again, respect to Butterfield for stepping up to the plate. I had a chance to stop by Butterfield Market recently in their Lexington Avenue location. This establishment is small, but has a variety of items to choose from. It has a small grocery section, a hot foods section, deli meats section, and a huge bakery section. They also have a coffee & smoothie bar, and a frozen yogurt bar. I've tried some of their items in the past, and my favorite is their Cinnamon Babka! It includes the perfect amount of cinnamon inside the flaky and soft parts of the bread. I've also tried their Italian Sandwich which is pretty good as well. Since the prices are a bit expensive, it would be a place I'd go to once in a while. Despite this, it's a quaint market with a good amount of options to choose from ranging in different categories. read more

Everyone inside the store was very nice to me. It's when I went to get ice cream, I had an odd experience. In the window, it was advertised that there is matcha ice cream. I first order cookies & cream in a cup for my daughter. Then I ask for matcha on a cone. She said we don't have cones right now. Then I asked for matcha in a cup. She said they don't have that flavor. Then I asked for cookies & cream in a cup. Then that answer validated the vibes I was getting off of her. Oh my gosh! I'm sold! Okay, so I didn't officially go into their stores. The story is that I was visiting New York City for Thanksgiving. I was staying at my girlfriend's place who is close to the location on the upper East side. I read that they were selling Thanksgiving individual meals and I figured that was the way to go because we weren't going to go out that night and we had a full kitchen.. Ordering was easy breezy. My friend picked up the dinners the day before Thanksgiving. The boxes had heating instructions and the dinners looked amazing! Thanksgiving evening we devoured most of it, the portions were pretty large so we even had left overs. I can't say I loved the stuffing, however all of the rest were amazing, from the turkey to the sides to cornbread to the pumpkin pie. I've read reviews and that is why I chose this place. I am so glad I did! Next time I'm in town I'll have to stop by the store front. From what I read, it will make me happy. If you don't feel like cooking ... A few weeks ago, my friend and I stopped in at Butterfield Market for a snack after a day of touristing around the Upper East Side (dinner was still a few hours away). They had a great selection given that they're not large - sandwiches, sweets, prepared snacks, ... there was a lot to choose from! We shared a sushi roll and some cut fruit. The manager Angelica (clearly doesn't need to be the one in charge bc doesn't know simple laws) accused me of stealing a cup of ice then looked at my service dog with disgust and implied my service dog was not really a service dog. One of my favorite prepared food/gourmet markets in the city. I follow them on IG and they always have amazing looking delicious food and treats. They even sell my favorite ice cream from Caffe Panna. They have a flavor of the week and its always something yummy looking. I have had the Asian Chicken Salad and its really good, they give a generous amount of grilled chicken in it and the sesame dressing is delicious. The store is clean and bright full of a lot of produce, a pizza counter, frozen yogurt and a lot more. Everyone there is helpful and friendly. I love that they carry a lot of treats from bakeries around the city and even outside the city. I purchased this addictive snack mix there and its practically gone so I'm planning to stock up on another container of it. I want to try some of the other prepared items there, the turkey cranberry sandwich looks good. I just wish they would deliver small amounts on like Door Dash or another app. It is a little expensive for some things but the quality is there.
