I love anything beautiful . I feel that this place is high end grocery heaven. I've walked by so many times and have always admired the outside fruit and veggie set up. It's almost set up outside as a personal invitation to come in and shop. On a super Hot summer day when I walked in the air was cool and crisp. The smell of the fruit on the way inside was scrumptious. If my fridge wasn't currently full of juicing stuff I would have for sure gotten a ton of stuff. I'll def be back. I just got a few items but have made up my mind that I'll do my grocery shopping here from now on even tho it's four extra blocks to walk. The pricing is reasonable and the staff was very nice while I was there looking at all the well stocked shelves. The store is very clean. I loved that! While the name of this fruit stand/grocer is the furthest thing from marketing genius, this is a decent place to come for reasonable produce. I come here for nature's candy (read, fruit and veggies) the delicious mangoes ($1.49), blueberry bluets ($1.99), a small pack of blackberries ($2.99), healthy green broccoli ($2.50), three lemons ($1), bananas ($0.99/lb), cherries, strawberries ($1.99), and red grapes. Keep in mind that the aforementioned produce list includes items that I have purchased, and is by no means meant to be exhaustive. UDKNP earns extra points because they also sell higher end grocery products and organic alternatives. The store shelves organic cleaning supplies, ethnic alternatives, decent green tea (Two Leaves and a Bud green tea), dairy products, and normal grocery aisle staples like peanut butter ($3.59 for their biggest size). UDKNP is reasonably priced for certain items, similar to fruit stands that set up shop on your way to the subway. I was pleasantly surprised by many of their higher-end grocery offerings, but wouldn't advise treating this establishment as a "one-stop-shopping" place. Come here for selective produce shopping. Great food at decent prices, for sure. Definitely not your usual corner bodega. I've had two experiences with the staff here that I'd like to forget. 1) I went in at about midnight to buy a few things. There was one other person in front of me who was clearly stocking up for the nuclear winter. Instead of quickly ringing up the items after noticing there were 3 other customers behind this one, the guy behind the counter took about 1 minute on each thing. It was as if he was contemplating each item, thinking about his cat at home, and then ringing it up. It took 20 minutes for him to get done. After waiting 10 minutes, I figured I put in the time and was in it for the long haul...so I stayed. 2) This one is slightly more disturbing....every time I go in here, there is a weird vibe from the workers there. I don't know what it is, but it's weird. I'm waiting in line to purchase my items and a Hispanic guy is in front of me (he was dressed in line cook clothing, so I assume he worked at a local restaurant.) As soon as he pays for his things and leaves, the lady behind the counter pulls out air freshener and sprays it all over. I sort of laugh and ask "what's wrong?" She tells me...exact words "Mexicans. Love this place! It's right down the block from my apartment and seems to be open all the time which is super convenient. The staff is very friendly. Not only do they have plenty of fresh produce but they also have well-priced essential pantry and toiletry items, as well as odds and ends. I find that their prices vary...some items are very reasonably priced (lower than the local grocery stores) and some items can be a little high. The trick to this store is to stick to the produce only. Everything else is overpriced and of varying quality but the vegetables and fruit are fresh and so cheap. This new corner grocery has been open a week now, and word seems to have spread, based on the steady stream of customers--this is the place for a great selection of produce (organic and conventional) at reasonable (for NYC) prices. E.g., even in the apple post-season, the Golden Delicious are $1.49/lb, and $2.49/lb organic. The produce selection rivals the sprawling Food Emporium, the quality rivals snooty Eli Zabar's, and the prices rival Gristedes (a chain which I'm surprised doesn't suffer from scurvy, due to its deficiency of fresh fruits and veggies). I'm trying to find a catch; this is a conveniently-located store with good food at reasonable prices. It's open 24-hours to boot! It doesn't have a full grocery selection--the only meat is packaged, pre-cooked, and the other selections are skewed toward gourmet convenience store fare (e.g. organic honey and maple stroopwafels!!!). Staples like milk, yogurt, and eggs are covered, though the competitively-priced yogurt supply was pretty depleted this Sunday (maybe they restock on Mondays, or perhaps neighborhood demand exceeded expectations). This place is actually a really good small grocery store. They have plenty of fresh produce and have packed in plenty of packaged products. And the prices on the produce is actually not bad. I love coming here for some fresh berries or tomatoes. I just wish the prices on their other items were better. Despite this place being small, I can always find the products I'm looking for when I'm in a rush. I'll definitely be stopping by here again. The other thing that really bothers me is the name. I have been there a few times under new ownership and noticed a decline in the quality of the fruit. Went there July 4th evening and bought some fruit. The grapes were sour, the watermelon was over done and strawberry's were spoiled. I was thinking of complaining to Amex. Just beware and do a better job at picking out fruit then I did. read more

Don't be put off by the baffling name -- this unconventional market is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood. UDKN (as I've come to think of it) offers the best selection of produce in the neighborhood, as well as a host of organic, international groceries to rival any upscale gourmet store in the city. The prices are good (though for some things they can be a bit ridiculous, namely cereal & milk) and the people that work there are very sweet. They seem to be adding more items with each passing week (cleaning supplies! bread!) -- so check back often. Best polenta deal in the neighborhood. Why, that's random. Yes, consensus seems to be that this place is great for produce with reasonable prices. You don't really need my review to glean that, even if I do agree. But, U Don't Know Nothing Produce (my lord, what were they thinking with that name? Did someone lose a bet?) is actually pretty decent for general groceries. For instance, seltzer is the same price as at Gristede's (89 cents for Vintage). Canned tomatoes are cheaper here than at Gristede's or Food Emporium. They've got decent cheese. They've got decent olives. They've got your random European chocolates (yay! Kinder bueno!). And, yes, a little log of polenta is a mere $1.99. That might even be cheaper than Trader Joe's. Also, I just charged $11, so either they've dropped or lowered the minimum. read more

This my go to spot for produce and essentials. The prices a good when compared to other markets in the area. Produce is fresh and they have a good selection of healthy snacks and food. Baffling name aside, this is a great neighborhood mini-grocery store. Yes, the people who work there seem slightly drugged at times, but that aside they are pleasant enough. I really wish they had more organic produce-other than the occasional blueberry and the always on hand "organic girl' salad mixes, the produce is not organic, however they stock lots of organic products-Bob's Red Mill, milk, yogurt, canned tomatoes, to name but a few. They also carry wild smoked salmon which for some reason is really hard to find (most is farmed raised salmon)-even Eli's and Fairway don't carry it. If they stocked organic produce in addition to the other items I'd be thrilled with this place but I realize they only have so much room. If you really look at the items on their shelves you may be surprised at what you find-many are only found in upscale grocery stores in my experience. read more
