I've been wanting to go here for a while. I'm from West Chester, PA (transplant from California) so the drive to get there was so beautiful. I feel like I am driving down a country road in Europe. There's a creek right in front of the entrance. When you walk in there is so much to look at. From all the pastry's to the antiques throughout the shop. I bought a few things. The egg, cheese croissant sandwich, croissant French toast and the quiche with potatoes. Everything was amazing! Such a gem of a place and the girl who served me was the sweetest. What an adorable local cafe! I love that it's in basically a home with a large parking lot and a creek passing by. You literally have to cross a bridge to get in. When it gets warmer I can't wait to enjoy my coffee outdoors. I was only in town for a week but we had to come several times. The lattes are so tasty and I had to try a few different pastries every time. I also enjoy the bigger tables. We actually came once as a group of four to play games and drink coffee. It's just honey. There's also a counter where your party can sit across from each other. I saw a group doing homework there. In addition, I want to highlight the lovely service I received every time. Not sure if it was a bad day for them or what, but there didn't seem to be an adult in charge, or a manager in sight. Behind the counter and those running orders to tables it seemed like there were nothing but high schoolers working. Maybe there were some college age, but they all seemed very young, inexperienced and a bit nervous. The runner could not locate our table for over five minutes as he thought the lattes were labeled with 9, not 6. Lattes were lukewarm by the time they arrived. Then, the same runner arrives with the wrong order. Subsequently the young women who took the order arrives at our table to clarify what we ordered, and the original order was repeated to her. Five minutes later the same young lady arrives to our table to say she charged us for the wrong sandwich (which was not what the runner initially arrived at our table with) and we owed an extra $3, which we paid. This, 30 minutes after we had originally placed our order. 40 minutes later our order finally arrives, cool lattes consumed long ago. This was a series of bad mistakes by a bunch of young workers, and there wasn't an adult manager in sight to try to make things right for the customer. It seemed like an error in judgement by the owners to have left the young crew in charge as they didn't know what to do once they had made a mistake. It was not a good experience for us and hopefully the management or owner should be made aware. At no time were we disrespectful of the workers and remained patient. read more

It took me almost an hour to get here and it was worth every minute!!! Not only was the ride scenic and beautiful, but so was the place. They have a little stream going thru their property and there are tables and benches set up along it. Plenty of outdoor seating as well as a large indoor restaurant area. The food was amazing and home made. We tried the home made croissant sandwich and a breakfast wrap and both were delicious. We had fantastic drinks as well. Lavender iced tea and a chai latte. Then, I got some drinks and treats to take home for the kids. They liked everything I chose for them and can't wait to go back and experience the place in person. Fantastic spot! My wife and I love the midday escape for lunch, coffee, strategy session for the Holiday season...any reason is a good one to stop in here and slow down. Curry CHX Croissant, Salted Caramel Tart, and a Peppermint Latte is always the best combo after first day of working out too! People always so nice, and the atmosphere is one of best in Chester County as an morning or early afternoon destination. This is also right across the street from another gem called Birchrunville Cafe in the Historic Bucktown area. A BYOB, and a must go to on your short list of spots to visit. You'll cross over the stream, as you walk across the bridge to open the door. Inside is artisan cozy, stone and wood.. and the unique design continues, kids can sit on tractor seat stools and stand on the light changing logo embedded in the floor...( although they do tend to like the stream best.."all the better to play with my dear"). The straws, and condiments are arrayed on the cast iron stove. There's a clock with a feather for a second hand, (bounces around the dial) that feels very wonderland-like. There's a mini anvil in a set back shelf, A rack of rolling pins. Lots of copper piping, both functional and artistically enhancing. Most of the locals are genuinely warm. Both with each other and with newcomers. The women who run Butterscotch, are the stuff road trips are made memorable with. The food looks so good, its hard to believe..at first, that it tastes so good. Like a Parisienne moved to the countryside and opened a small corner of subdued sophistication. (Home away from home). They offer many drink choices, classic and exotic, including Thai-tea, that I recommend. (It's good when they have a line, so you can peruse at your leisure.) The countryside here, is some of my favorite in PA. Covered bridge in one direction. Wild Turkeys, and cute cannons set on stone fences, another.. Horse drawn lacquered carriages, Large Cranes standing in streams, neon blue dragonflies that harass the waterways. Fox and hound chases. And local pony riders that just belly up to the tables. The stretches of beautiful, draw the bikers, and bicyclers, on weekends. Your best bet is to come Thursday. Especially if you want to pretend you're in-the-know about this "swimming hole". It is definitely the place to bring out-of-towners. Like Longwood, I add this to my show off Pennsylvania, itinerary. Don't forget to come early. I honestly don't want anyone to know about this spot. It's very cozy and a wonderful, quaint cafe to treat yourself to a very tasty pastry or lunch. The inside is rustic, but with modern updates. Outside there's a handful of tables by the creek next to the parking lot. All of the lunch options seemed very reasonable for what you got...lobster salad for $13.50 is a great price. They remind me of the pastries in France with focus on artistry, craft, and flavor vs inundation of sugar. The flour used is high quality. The staff is incredible, kind, patient, and accommodating. Great pastry shop off the beaten path road. It's in the middle of no where, but has great outdoor scenery and another shop across the street. It is a very welcoming place, we were greeted by all the employees as well. We met the owner and she seemed to speak with everyone in the restaurant getting feedback on her food and drinks. The owner even helped us on our order. It was all wonderful! We loved all their food and really enjoyed the beautifully decorated environment. The prices are pretty steep, but worth it. But outside is where it's at. Butterscotch is situated over a little brook, and an assortment of outdoor tables let you enjoy the water and the friendly folks and pets while you eat. If you don't mind a drizzly day, come on a grey morning. Bring something to toss over your seat to keep you dry. The combined scenery, delicious food, and utter peace will be a rare treat. This is the cutest bakery. My mom and I stopped here on a rainy Thursday. I ordered the almond croissant that was one of the best croissants I've ever had, it had sweet almond nougat inside. They also warmed it up! My mom ordered the cranberry orange muffin and she loved it! I stumbled upon this place a couple weeks ago and I'm so glad I did. This place is absolutely beautiful! The decorations inside are vintage, detailed and I love how they repurposed many old antiques. They have a nice selection of baked good and homemade breads. The staff is very friendly. The baked good are a little pricey and that's my only complaint.. A mini corn muffin was $2 but I loved both desserts I tried. I got the peanut butter tart and the carrot cake. I enjoyed the seating and being able to talk with some of the locals. Incredibly rude staff. When I questioned the long lead time yesterday to order a cake relative to places like The Buttery in Malvern they said, "You do not need to order with us. " I have had their pastries and cakes before and they are not that great relative to places like The Buttery. I'm not sure if they are trying to rest on the laurels of Birchrunville Inn, but can't imagine why anyone would consider aloof service a good business strategy. I will not be back and have warned friends and colleagues. I don't mind paying for a good quality, but I have no tolerance for rudeness. Lovely! Gorgeous setting, I love the drive to this place, now is the perfect time to see some fall colors. In summer there is seating outside next to a small burbling brook, inside is beautifully done, rustic, cozy and charming. The cafe serves great coffee and wonderful pastries, the pastries are prepared by the pastry chef at the Birchrunville Cafe across the street a class A restaurant, probably the best in a 100 mile radius, my favorite, perhaps anywhere, except Spain.
