Let's just say Austin was no longer a friendly place to live for a social worker trying to get ahead (AKA buy a house some day). After 2 attempts to get to ATX in 2025, I finally gave up on the airlines and decided to drive. I made it on 2/28/26 with a long list of "errands" that included "buy cowboy boots at Allen's." Imagine my dismay and surprise to see scads of people lined up north of Allen's at a boot store that looked like it was straight out of IG. Who are these people and why are they queuing for an overpriced California-looking place when the real deal is just a few stores south?? We bought my daughter's first pair of boots (red ropers) at Allen's back in 1994/1995. Why mess with tradition? I'm an Aggie, so we cotton to tradition. Anyhoo, Pedro was helping me find some boots and I got down to two pairs that fit like a dream. When my friend asked which pair I would buy, I made a quick decision - both. After all, it took two cancelled flights and a (kid you not) wrench in my tire to make it to ATX. I wasn't going to waste the trip making hard decisions. It could be another 8 years before I make it to the place I still call "home." Thank you Pedro for your assistance. Maybe I'll get some ostrich boots next trip! I love my tall brown boots & my short green-blue boots! Wearing them just about every day here in Columbia, SC! I'm grateful to Allen's for being true Austin - I felt right at home and will treasure my boots!!

There used to be a Target but RIP. So Ross it is. Ross is at the bottom tier of these type of stores. If you remember K-mart the interior is bright and florescent. Everything is on racks. It's one of the larger Ross stores I've been in. I found some socks that I needed to buy and went to the amusement park line to the cashier. Here you can find lots of impulse snacks and gadgets. These stores always get busy mid afternoon just when your thinking your missing all the people picking up stuff after work. They had one cashier but the line started to get long so they opened another cash register. Ross has always been the lower end of the big 3 and they've always had security guards at the door even in the late 1900s. This one was slightly different as they inspect your bags and look at your receipt before leaving - I suggest going to Melrose nearby or drive further out to a Marshall's or TJ Maxx if you can so you don't have to deal with the feeling like you are in prison.

WARNING: Do not leave your belongings with this Plato's Closet location…read more I would strongly caution anyone against selling to -- much less shopping at -- this Plato's Closet. After this experience, I will NEVER shop at or sell to this store again, and I recommend anyone considering doing business here follow suit. On May 11, I dropped off one bag of clothing to sell at the Brodie Lane store. I received a receipt and was told they would text me when they finished reviewing my items. They texted me later that day saying they were done, so I returned that same afternoon to complete the process and pick up anything they did not buy. When I got there, the employees at the counter acted confused for several minutes before one casually said something along the lines of, "Oh, you're the girl whose bag went missing." That was how I found out Plato's Closet had lost my entire bag of clothing. Not one item. Not a receipt mix-up. An entire bag of my personal belongings. The bag included items from brands like Lululemon and REVOLVE. It 1000% did not consist of the low-quality, cheap items this store notoriously carries, like SHEIN and similar throwaway brands. I do not have an exact inventory of every item in the bag, and neither do they -- which means there is now no way to know the full retail value, resale value, or actual contents of the bag they lost. Looking back, I gave this store far more trust than it deserved. I assumed they had competent staff, organization, and safeguards to track customer belongings for a few hours. This location is usually frustrating at best: dismissive employees, overcrowded racks, piles of merchandise everywhere, and a store you can barely move through or shop. Even with all of that, I never imagined an entire bag of my belongings could disappear within hours. I was told the owner was aware, would review camera footage, and would call me before the end of the day. She did not call. I called the next day and was again told she would call me. She still did not call. I finally received a call from the owner more than a week later, on May 19, only to be told they could not find my bag and the footage did not provide answers. Instead of taking responsibility, the owner was defensive and dismissive. She focused on irrelevant excuses instead of the actual problem: Plato's Closet accepted my property, lost it, failed to return it, and had no explanation for where it went. I was willing to consider store credit only because the bag disappeared while in their possession. If they had accepted the full bag for resale, they likely would have offered me a reasonable amount. Since there is now no way to know whether the items were given away, misplaced, taken, thrown out, or otherwise lost, it should be treated as though they accepted the full bag. The items are gone either way, and I should not be left absorbing the loss because they failed to track my property. The only thing the owner vaguely mentioned on her own was maybe giving me a "discount to shop in the store," without ever giving an amount. After I explained what I believed would be fair, she reluctantly threw out what was basically a pennies-on-the-dollar store credit, which felt insulting considering they lost my property, waited over a week to call me, and still had no explanation. To make it worse, she said, "Well, we recommend you stay in the store while you are selling items," which is absurd. If you recommend customers stay in the store, why allow drop-offs? If you offer a drop-off service, you are responsible for having enough basic control over your operation to know where people's property is while it is in your store. My bag was only there for a handful of hours. I followed their system exactly: dropped off my items, got a receipt, waited for their text, and came back the same day. They are the ones who "lost" my belongings. If Plato's Closet cannot safely manage customer drop-offs, they should not offer drop-offs. Period. Other resale stores require customers to wait or complete the buying process in person for this exact reason. For all I know, they could have given my bag to another customer, thrown it away, misplaced it, or someone could have taken the items for themselves. I hate even speculating, but when a business loses customer property and cannot -- or will not -- explain where it went, every possibility is on the table. This was not just bad customer service. It was careless, shady, and unacceptable. I have bought from and sold to this location for years, but I will never give this store my business again. I would not trust them with my belongings, and I strongly recommend no one else does either. Do not shop here. Do not sell here. Do not leave your belongings here. This location cannot be trusted to protect customer property, take accountability, or handle a basic issue with professionalism.

I called 2/27 with my…read moresituation of needing a flower girl dress that has four layers and some embroidery on top, and that I was needing it by 3/12. She told me that it would be a $45 to start and that we could talk more when I came in about price and I told her that I I could just cut it honestly to save on cost. Just need it in time. She said that it would include a rush fee, which was fine, I understood. Said that she would text me with some days to come in. When she texted me, I sent her pictures and a video as well of the flower girl dress and the layers. I wanted to make sure that we could make the 3/12 date as mentioned. She said yes with an extra $15 rush fee and the date she gave me were a week from the day we spoke. I came in knowing it would probably be a bit more and she started off with, "Oh you're not gonna like the price" and I said OK there's not much I can do because we're so close now to the date but OK and she quoted me $200. She's actually said, "really it would normally be $400 but she was gonna give me a 'discount'". That definitely rubbed me a little wrong making the $200 trying to sound like it wasn't that bad, even though I already said it was fine. When I went to check out after she measured my daughter, she had a date 3/21 and I said oh, where is the rush fee and I can't pick it up on 3/21, remember we talked about the 12th. She then proceeded to make me feel like I was rushing her, said that that was 3 to 4 days turnaround and normally that's an express fee added onto that. And when I told her that we discussed this on the phone and on text message and she chose to schedule me a week after that. She interrupted to say "oh I'm honoring the rush fee. I'm just saying I'm going to have to put this at the front of the line and I'm a one armed show right now". I had no choice but to try to be nice because this was actually her doing knowing my timeline and scheduling me a week later with a 3 to 4 day turnaround but I felt I had no choice. When I told her I would pick it up early morning or afternoon on 3/12 she told me that she didn't work within time frames. She's going to have it ready on 3/11 and will have to push it. And she closes early.. I said that's fine, I work from home, I can pick it up that day.. Making it known that I'm inconveniencing her. This was her doing. I have texts to prove it. The dress was maybe $100 before tax and I ended up with a bill of almost triple. I was gracious for the rush and left. My husband decided that wasn't so fair so I called back within 10 minutes and told her, unfortunately we were going to have to pick it up and get a refund. She asked me how much I expected it to be and I told her there was a man the week before who quoted me $50 but I went to her first due to honoring my appointment - and before I got to finish she "haughtily" laughed out loud and said "ohohoho no, I won't do that", I reminded her I didn't ask her to, that's just how much he quoted me and we just wanted a refund. She told me it would take a couple of days to get to the bank and I said that was fine and she then proceeded to tell me it was actually going to cost HER money to do that and I was inconveniencing her! and of course as I was still talking to tell her I understand, she hung up on me. She left me feeling horrible as much as I tried to be nice, I had no choice to to have to pay the amount she said because of her appointment date and leaving us with a short turnaround time. Lucky for us my MIL found a very sweet lady who is apparently (actually) a wonderful seamstress and sweet and fair, to do my daughter's dress for ... $70!!! And on time. Good luck if you use her services, but be warned.. she's not only unprofessional, she's not fair in pricing and will leave you to believe you have no other choice and if you change your mind, she will be extremely rude.

The dress I originally planned to wear did not work out, so I ordered another one. It's technically floor length, but I'm 5'10" so it stops at the ankle instead of covering my feet. So now the shoes have to be stunning enough that no one will even notice the hemline. I ordered a pair on Amazon that were supposed to arrive Friday. Then I got the dreaded update that they were delayed to Saturday... at 10 PM. Well, that's not going to work. So I made the mad dash to Nordstrom Rack Saturday morning. I walked in with low expectations, fully prepared to hit multiple stores before finding anything close to what I needed. Instead, I found the most gorgeous Badgley Mischka crystal pumps. They're slightly bigger than my normal size, but that actually works in my favor. They're comfortable, my toes can move, and I can already tell I won't be plotting my escape from them halfway through the evening. While I was there I grabbed a strapless bra and even found a formal bag that works better than the clutch I originally planned to carry. Sibyl at checkout was the perfect finishing touch to my morning. Friendly, outgoing, and genuinely helpful. The whole experience felt like the Nordstrom culture of service I studied back in graduate school.
