My friends brought me and my husband here for lunch after we climbed the Hatteras Lighthouse because we were craving fish tacos. The restaurant is cute and colorful on the interior and the waiters were very friendly. Buxton Munch is known for their fish tacos, so that's what my husband and I split. My friends ordered a seafood wrap and a quesadilla. The fish tacos plate was definitely enough food for both me and husband. It came in a nicely arranged platter of 4 tortillas wrapped in foil, lettuce, tomatoes, shredded cheese, grilled fish, creamy sauce. We got avocado added for an additional $1. It's a make-your-own-taco process so we piled on the ingredients and rolled them up in the tortillas. We could tell that all the ingredients were fresh! I also thought it was cute that each entree came with a small Tootsie Roll on top for dessert. Next time I come here we're going to try the smoothies! read more

Buxton Munch was a great little stop during my trip to Cape Hatteras! For safety during Covid, they currently aren't letting people inside so you have to call in to place your order and the employees will bring it out to you. But it was an easy system and it was easy to place our order. We did have to wait quite a bit for our food. They gave us an estimated time and it took about twice as long for us to actually get our food, but they were quite busy when we were there. The food was definitely worth the wait though! The grilled Mahi tacos were delicious and so were the crab cakes. I ordered the fried oyster po' boy. I personally didn't care for it but I think I just don't like oysters (I had never tried them fried and wanted to give it a shot) so if you like oysters, I think you'd really enjoy it! Today I had the hippy chik burrito from Buxton Munch. As someone traveling to Buxton I appreciated the vegan option(s) as there are few restaurants in town to choose from. The best part was the roasted red pepper hummus, it really made the burrito. If you are planning to go to this restaurant it is important to note they are only open for carry out. There are picnic benches outside. The woman I spoke to on the phone was friendly and helpful. The only thing I was taken back by was when I mentioned I had to pay with cash (they prefer card) she said something along the lines of "our workers make their wage on tips". I intended on tipping, and left a generous tip, but to be directly verbally asked to tip was unusual. When picking up the food you have to wait at the door for an employee to come out, then wait on your food. My lunch was ready in a timely manner. Overall I recommend Buxton Munch! *****in response to negative reviews I have read: It is VERY clear most of the people leaving 1 star reviews have never worked in food service. In some cases, yes, the owner could have been more polite, BUT I applaud them sticking up for their employees. All in all, the customer is NOT always right. Easy to see why this spot is so popular down on Hatteras. I didn't enjoy the tacos as much as I like the ones from Fish Heads up in Nags Head, but they were their own kind of delicious. This is more of a make-your-own platter, where you can fill your tortillas up with perfect shrimp and a variety of other fillings and then slather some delicious shrimp taco sauce on there. The fried pickles were top notch, and the fried mac n cheese were really just adequate. Definitely felt like a frozen novelty, as opposed to the pickles that definitely seemed freshly made. Also tried some of the jamaican guacamole quesadilla, which was also a solid meal and packed with flavor. Prices quite reasonable, lots of food, staff very friendly. The tacos were very good, but not the best I've had out there. Masked staff brought the order out to my car when I arrived, contactless pickup option - all went well. read more

The smallest, most insignificant looking little restaurant in a nondescript little strip mall on the entire island has the BEST FOOD! Re-read that again and believe me twice! We had 4 glorious days on OBX and 3 of the 4 days we ate lunch at the Munch. What did we munch on for our lunch at Munch? Fish tacos, of course! MAN o MAN!!!! You can't find a better taco place that can serve up blackened rockfish with enough tortillas, fillings and extras for the money on the island or on the mainland for the price. One serving fed with leftovers. More than quantity though is the quality and flavor. Of the 3 types of fish available, you can order them either broiled or blackened. Ours were delicious and paired up with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, rice, beans, onions, and guacamole. The staff are sweet, helpful, patient (even with us landlubber tourists) and courteous. I tried to bribe them to move to Baltimore....I even offered to buy them a food truck to park in my back yard...alas, no way. We'll just have to look forward to going back. And looking forward to going back to sample more of their great food, we will! read more

We ordered a Bang Bang shrimp po'boy for lunch and had the foresight to include and extra order of blackened fish tacos to save for dinner. The fish tacos are packaged in such a way that you put them together yourself later. The customer service was top notch in my book. They did a great job explaining how the pandemic effected pickup would go. The food was amazing! Even after the trip back to the house. Shrimp were crispy on the outside and oh so tender on the inside. My picky eater's has zero complaints about her cheeseburger and fries. Today was our first visit to BM and not our last. As a new local we were told to wait until it slows down off season. It was still busy but counter seating was fine for us! The decor is cute with bright colors and clean. We decided to start with the corn shrimp chowder and Hatteras clam chowder(my first) They were Awesome!!! I had the famous fish tacos, 3 different fresh fish to choose from, and hubby had the lunch special the Reuben. I'm sure this is a great restaurant. But business owners response to Shannon C makes me never want to try. We arrived at lunch with 2 infants and a toddler. We were told we'd have to go on wait list. I asked how long wait list was. Hostess said it was only us and prompted us to wait outside in 85 degree heat with 4 month old. We waited a few minutes, then asked if we could order carry out. My husband and I have been meaning to go here for years and finally had a chance to this week. I was a little nervous at first because there was some confusion as to who our waitress was so we waited longer than usual for someone to take our drink orders but we were on island time so no big deal :-) The old bay grilled mahi tacos were great! An extremely large portion and excellent presentation. The homemade salsa and spicy ranch sauce(?) were delicious. My husband had a crabby patty and was pleasantly surprised. We're from Maryland so we always order out of town crab cakes with hesitancy. This was probably the first one he's had in NC that he's liked. We enjoyed our visit to Buxton Munch, and would go back again. We had the fish tacos... my wife the Triggerfish and I the blackened Rockfish... both were tasty. I loved how the fish tacos were plated. My kids had a burger and the chicken nuggets... also good. I thought our waiter did a good job. He did forget our appetizers, but I dug his enthusiasm about which type of fish we should go with for our tacos (he liked the "buttery" Triggerfish), and he was good about refills, etc... so it was all good. I always appreciate waiters with strong opinions about the food . I did read several reviews before choosing Buxton Munch, and there were a few that mentioned rudeness. Just my 2 cents here, but some people (restaurant employees included) just tend to be more naturally "warm & fuzzy" than others . It didn't affect our enjoyment of the experience. read more

Celebrated our 36th Anniversary here on October 22nd. We love BMC and always make a point of stopping in at least once or twice when traveling to the Outer Banks. They are the best! Fresh, delicious, scrumptious, makes me happy just thinking about it. Staff is welcoming, friendly, helpful, so nice. Waiting for great food is not a chore! Myself, wife and a friend stopped by here this past Tuesday. We sat INSIDE. Someone asked me to mention that there IS inside seating. The place has a great atmosphere. Very laid back. The best part was the food. It was incredible. I had fish tacos with grouper and the Mrs had the same but with Mahi. I have eaten almost everywhere on the Outer Banks having lived there for 20 years or so before moving. This is one of the best meals I've ever had. We had family members already eating at Buxton Munch Company when we arrived there. What we didn't realize was that we had arrived after they had technically closed. It didn't matter to them. The staff was so kind and allowed us to order food and be with our family even though the restaurant had closed. After such a long day of driving and getting to the beach and reuniting with family, the staff at this restaurant treated us like family as well. The food was great, the service was great, and the owners are from Ohio and proudly adorn an Ohio State Buckeyes championship banner on their wall! How can you not like this place?
