My friend and I visited Tavern on 12 for lunch today. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I ordered the tacos and subbed fries instead of rice and beans. Tavern on 12 offers great American style food when you want a change of pace from the copious seafood restaurants around the area. On the appetizers we had the wings which are indeed Big, Fat, and Meaty. The wings were not super crispy but instead very meaty. We had the dry magic rub and the buffalo sauced wings and the dry magic rub was great while the buffalo style was pretty standard. The Hatteras Style Clam Chowder was descent enough, not super flavorful, potatoes were very flat flavor wise. I wouldn't get it again. The tavern burger was almost everything I wanted in a burger. The bun was crispy and added a nice crunch. The burger patty was massive and juicy. The country ham was soft and not dry at all, and just fell apart in my mouth. The cheddar cheese was melted perfectly. The one negative was the caramelized onions. They were too thick and barely cooked. One fraction of the onion would be black and cooked while the rest was not even cooked. The onions needed to be cooked more and thinner to achieve caramelization and it really took away from the rest of the burger. I had a side of the pimento mac & cheese. It's very different from most other mac & cheese as the pimento and jalapeño add some spices you don't normally have in a mac. It was very creamy and a unique experience, but not one that I enjoyed too much. I would come back here if I was craving a classic burger. read more

We ordered Tavern on 12 a couple times during our stay in obx and really enjoyed it both times! This place is BUSY but they were still able to have our pick-up order ready within 20 minutes. The food is nothing crazy, pretty standard ocean-bar food. One night we did burgers which were excellent and the other night we did pizzas which were just okay. I'm sure if you dine in it's even better! Still, it held up well and was packaged nicely. No complaints! read more

Got in right when they opened as we could easily walk there from our cabin at the campground next door. We got seated quickly and drinks and good were quick to come as well. Very classic wood tavern layout, lots of windows to let the natural sun light in. Sweet tea was really good, not sickingly sweet like some places. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich and the fried chicken. Sandwich both with a side of fries. Both were good, I like NC BBQ sauce since it is more of a vinegar flavor than sweet so dont expect it to be. My husband liked his chicken sandwich, was a little thin but no qualms since the flavor was still there. Its just a overall nice place to come nab a quick bite if your down here visiting. read more

Yum! Tavern on 12 came recommended from a friend who is a frequent Hatteras visitor. I would continue the favor and recommend it again and again! We had the nachos to start our meal. They were delicious. We received a large bowl of sour cream and guac to dip the chips in. Our daughter really enjoyed the beans on top. I had the make your own burger with the pimento mac and cheese. It was so good. The mac and cheese had a little bite to it, but was creamy and delicious. Their menu has a lot of options for non-seafood lovers like myself. It was a nice selection. They had a great drink menu with cocktails, beer, wine and cider. Parking lot was very full when we got there but were able to sit right down. Staff was so friendly and service was quick! read more

THE FOOD: This place is small and looks like the very place that you would go to eat if you were a local. The food is very delicious. my husband and I got the nachos with pulled pork. We're from the north so we're not used to getting nachos with beans on them! This was new for us. I believe they were called trashcan nachos., but they were delicious! We also got dessert, I don't remember what it was, but it was good. One plate of nachos filled to both of us and we were stuffed. Their food is always delicious and our waiter informed us that everything is made in house! Our waiter was excellent and I didn't have to ask for a refill once. Their sweet iced tea was also my favorite out of all the restaurants we ate at during our trip. The loaded nachos are also always a fan favorite. For dessert, they had a Samoa pie (after the Girl Scout cookie) and it was truly life changing. I had the shrimp po boy and it was awfully good. The comeback sauce was slightly addicting. Fries are my favorite kind: double cooked and crispy. Dad got nachos and mom a bbq sandwich plate. All very good! read more

We ordered take out the last day of our vacation. We ordered a pulled pork platter and a hamburger. Both were excellent. The service was effecient and friendly. We plan to return here during our next trip to try many of the other things on the menu. read more

Wow! Had shrimp and scallop burger with onion rings and it was amazing. Folks next to me had nachos and shrimp tacos which I will try next time. Service was excellent. A must go to place. I had not finished the review and we have been to this establishment three more times. They had a special shrimp bisque with crab meat, potatoes, and corn that is out of this world. The shrimp tacos, exceptional. And as I have had shrimp tacos from a food truck in San Diego. Stopped here today while down at the Hatteras lighthouse. The staff was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed and were aware of the specials. The place has a nice feel with the inside being surrounding the bar and the outside seating being a nice covered deck. I really enjoyed my burger it was cooked and seasoned really well and full of flavor and the bacon on it was nice and crunchy. My dad enjoyed his burger to and my mom loved her bisque and trash can nachos. The chips on the nachos were super crispy and the pork and cheese really worked well together. The food is consistently great: Fried local caught fish; fantastic pizza; Hatteras style Chowder. The best Wings ever (Fall off the bone good!!) Service is very good; great staff. Usually the same faces year after year. The Owner is engaged and constantly looping and observing the operation. They have a great bar staff and have fair prices for mixed drinks and beers. It was topped with cold slaw and it was so yummy. My wife ordered the shrimp tacos and she loved them. The service is excellent and the drink options are great. If you are really hungry, try the trashcan nachos. Another night we got food Togo and a member of our party got the shrimp burger special and said it was amazing. Ask for Kate- She was GREAT! We ordered some drinks at the bar, very cool and large bar, with great bartenders. Also, great selection of drinks! We took first available, which was outside. There was about the same number of spaces inside vs outside, and we got outside. The weather was great and the service was great, just a lot of flies. Kate was our server and she was honestly fantastic. She was personable, helpful and spot on her recommendations on what to try. She suggested the nachos for the stared, they were awesome. Visited for lunch on Friday after exploring the lighthouse museum. The beer was ice cold and the food was so fresh! This restaurant was so amazing. The restaurant was super busy so we did have to wait about 25 min but that's normal for any restaurant the staff was very attentive and kind. We sat at an outside picnic table and the atmosphere was perfect for a little beach town restaurant. I recommend the trashcan nachos they were amazing and all the food tasted so FRESH! read more
