It started with a cup of ice water that tasted great. Filtered, cold, no aftertaste. Then we got MANY recommendations from the table near us saying this and that were great. I was overwhelmed but we settled on the bbq plate and the shrimp and scallop sandwich with onion rings. Everything was truly amazing. The onion rings were perfect. They had the best crisp! As well as the fries. The sandwich you could taste the flavor the second it hit your mouth. No waiting to chew and swallow. It was instant YUM. I was really craving coleslaw and while it was very fresh and looked great, it was slightly sweet and I personally prefer a more vinegar/savory slaw. I also ordered a coke with my meal and I have a very distinguished and picky palate for GREAT coke. It needs to have the "bite" and the burn, not watered down and sad. This did not disappoint. Every sip I took I had to exclaim. This is great coke! I wish we could go back, but they're closed today, on Monday, and we're leaving the beach. We ordered Tavern on 12 a couple times during our stay in obx and really enjoyed it both times! This place is BUSY but they were still able to have our pick-up order ready within 20 minutes. The food is nothing crazy, pretty standard ocean-bar food. One night we did burgers which were excellent and the other night we did pizzas which were just okay. Tavern on 12 offers great American style food when you want a change of pace from the copious seafood restaurants around the area. On the appetizers we had the wings which are indeed Big, Fat, and Meaty. The wings were not super crispy but instead very meaty. We had the dry magic rub and the buffalo sauced wings and the dry magic rub was great while the buffalo style was pretty standard. The Hatteras Style Clam Chowder was descent enough, not super flavorful, potatoes were very flat flavor wise. I wouldn't get it again. The tavern burger was almost everything I wanted in a burger. The bun was crispy and added a nice crunch. The burger patty was massive and juicy. The country ham was soft and not dry at all, and just fell apart in my mouth. The cheddar cheese was melted perfectly. The one negative was the caramelized onions. They were too thick and barely cooked. One fraction of the onion would be black and cooked while the rest was not even cooked. The onions needed to be cooked more and thinner to achieve caramelization and it really took away from the rest of the burger. I had a side of the pimento mac & cheese. It's very different from most other mac & cheese as the pimento and jalapeño add some spices you don't normally have in a mac. It was very creamy and a unique experience, but not one that I enjoyed too much. I would come back here if I was craving a classic burger. read more

Got in right when they opened as we could easily walk there from our cabin at the campground next door. We got seated quickly and drinks and good were quick to come as well. Very classic wood tavern layout, lots of windows to let the natural sun light in. Sweet tea was really good, not sickingly sweet like some places. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich and the fried chicken. Sandwich both with a side of fries. Both were good, I like NC BBQ sauce since it is more of a vinegar flavor than sweet so dont expect it to be. My husband liked his chicken sandwich, was a little thin but no qualms since the flavor was still there. Its just a overall nice place to come nab a quick bite if your down here visiting. read more

First the good, amazing server, Danny was great. Made a hell of a cocktail. Unfortunately food was meh, but it seems this is what the restaurant industry is now. Extremely overpriced average food. Oven baked wings were ok I guess. Buffalo sauce kind of tasted like a garlic jerk. Ordered burger medium, got well. Personally I do not like Worcestershire on my beef at all more of salt and pepper guy, burger was overpowered with Worcestershire. Tavern burger is advertised as having caramelized onions, which I love. Burger had barely sweated onions with that nasty raw onion flavor that I hate. Wife said her crab cake sandwich was "ok". Visually lacked any sort of appeal, ended up ditching the bun as bread to patty ratio was not a consideration. Come back sauce is just ketchup and mayo. Might wanna rename it don't come back sauce. So disappointing, especially when your on vacation and you really want to find a place that make you want to come everyday. read more

Yum! Tavern on 12 came recommended from a friend who is a frequent Hatteras visitor. I would continue the favor and recommend it again and again! We had the nachos to start our meal. They were delicious. We received a large bowl of sour cream and guac to dip the chips in. Our daughter really enjoyed the beans on top. I had the make your own burger with the pimento mac and cheese. It was so good. The mac and cheese had a little bite to it, but was creamy and delicious. Their menu has a lot of options for non-seafood lovers like myself. It was a nice selection. THE FOOD: This place is small and looks like the very place that you would go to eat if you were a local. The food is very delicious. my husband and I got the nachos with pulled pork. We're from the north so we're not used to getting nachos with beans on them! This was new for us. I believe they were called trashcan nachos., but they were delicious! We also got dessert, I don't remember what it was, but it was good. One plate of nachos filled to both of us and we were stuffed. Their food is always delicious and our waiter informed us that everything is made in house! Our waiter was excellent and I didn't have to ask for a refill once. Their sweet iced tea was also my favorite out of all the restaurants we ate at during our trip. The loaded nachos are also always a fan favorite. For dessert, they had a Samoa pie (after the Girl Scout cookie) and it was truly life changing. This place is another must when we are on the island and staying in Frisco makes it convenient. I usually get the shrimp poboy which is amazing but this time I opted for the pulled pork sandwich. It was topped with cold slaw and it was so yummy. My wife ordered the shrimp tacos and she loved them. The service is excellent and the drink options are great. If you are really hungry, try the trashcan nachos. Another night we got food Togo and a member of our party got the shrimp burger special and said it was amazing. Stopped here today while down at the Hatteras lighthouse. The staff was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed and were aware of the specials. The place has a nice feel with the inside being surrounding the bar and the outside seating being a nice covered deck. I really enjoyed my burger it was cooked and seasoned really well and full of flavor and the bacon on it was nice and crunchy. My dad enjoyed his burger to and my mom loved her bisque and trash can nachos. The chips on the nachos were super crispy and the pork and cheese really worked well together.
