It was recommended that I come here from a local and I was very excited to try it. I had just had a flight cancellation from the airport and was ready to enjoy a good dinner. Unfortunately my group had to wait over an hour for food, the server we had did not check up on us in any regular interval either leaving our drinks empty. When my food finally did come it was wrong. Food was good, but I would have rather had good service somewhere else. Also no compensation for our wait was offered, no explanation as to why our food took an hour, and when I asked about a military discount I was told "no... well yes but you have to be in uniform." Which didn't sit right with me considering the service we had just had. Nice looking place, but yeah... if this is an option you're considering, I would consider other options. *and I understand this is a sample size of their day to day and obviously it's not always like this and there are things out of their control. read more

Hubby wanted to try this place on his birthday. We were really excited to try a new place. He ordered a mai tai and was told they don't make them. The he ordered the steak dinner and they were out of steaks. Our drinks took forever on a Thursday night at 5pm. Gave me enough time to look around to see how filthy the place is. The menus were sticky, as was the floor. All of the fan blades are coated in dust. So everyone eating there is ingesting this filth. It's in your hair, on your clothes and in your food. We drank our drinks, paid or tab and left. Thankfully Uno Pizzeria is a few blocks away. Amazing food, excellent customer service and beautiful patio. read more

Don't make a reservation on yelp. They "turn it off" although they confirm your reservation. And then even though you check in at the desk as instructed, it's somehow your fault when they forget to seat you. Hoping the food is delish to upgrade this! Location: This Cajun/ creole food restaurant/ bar is located in historic downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin. It's a cute place to walk around, but everything closes around 7 or 8pm. Parking: There is 2 hour street parking (longer after 6pm), or garage parking available. Interior/ atmosphere: When you walk in, there is two floors. The first floor is the restaurant and the second floor is just a bar, I think. When we came in, the restaurant was popping with people so we were given a 15 minute wait time, but got seated quicker than that. The decorations inside are very quirky and fun, with alligator statues, wall posters and paintings, and sports TVs mounted on walls around the restaurant. Service: The service was great; our waitress was quick, attentive, and lovely. Food: 1. We ordered the gator fingers appetizer: alligator tail breaded and deep fried served with creole honey mustard dipping sauce. The deep fried breaded part tasted like popcorn chicken or any other breaded snack, and the alligator tail had a chewy consistency of squid. The honey mustard sauce gave the entire dish a great, spicy tang. 2. The Cajun combo with catfish fillet, jambalaya, seafood gumbo, and hush puppies. Everything was delicious! 3. Rasta pasta: spicy sweet fettuccine Alfredeaux with Caribbean spices topped with Jamaican jerk chicken and the most delicious garlic bread. The chicken was moist and full of flavor. The garlic bread was amazing. The fettuccine has a unique taste and I've never tasted something like that before. I can't really place my tongue on those flavors. What a great place to eat in LaCrosse! They specialize in Cajun food. We just had appetizers of gator bites and the best poutine I've ever had with shredded beef, melted cheese curds, extra crispy fries and gravy. I would also recommend the beer cheese soup which was hearty and a little tangy-- a perfect warmer-upper on a chilly fall afternoon. This place was definitely worth a visit. The menu is stacked with a ton of options (too many?!? I was struggling to narrow down from like 5 things I wanted). Ultimately, we started with the jalapeno pepperjack cheese bites. They were pretty good. I could have handled a little more spice, but that is nitpicking. The cheese was ooey and gooey in just the right ways and the breading excellent. For my entree I got the Shrimp Creole. It is a pile of dirty rice surrounded by shrimp and a spicy tomato sauce. It also came with a piece of perfectly baked bread. It was excellent. There was also a lot of it. Which I didn't know when I also ordered hush puppies (they just sounded like something I wanted). I had absolutely no room for them... Well, I had one while it was fresh. I went home with oodles of leftovers (hush puppies are even good cold. Who knew?!). It was all excellent. My husband got the Shrimp po boy and he said it was good but not great (he has a high standard for a shrimp pot boy). We tried all of the appetizers and they were all tasty...my favorite was the poutine, with a close second being the fried cheese curds. All of the entrees were nicely proportioned! The etoufee was very flavorful and the rice was perfectly cooked. The fried crawfish was a bit under-seasoned. Wife got the walleye and same complaint. I've heard good things about this place from coworkers so we decided to stop in for an early dinner. Since it was a Saturday evening, the wait was about 45-60 minutes which was to be expected, but we didn't mind waiting. We ordered two entrees, the Crawfish Étouffée and the Cajun Combo. The étouffée was seasoned perfectly and had a nice kick to it. It was perfectly spiced but not too spicy, the sauce had a rich buttery taste and the spices were well balanced. The Cajun Combo came with blackened catfish, jambalaya, seafood gumbo, and hushpuppies. The catfish was tender and delicious (it's also served with tartar sauce, but a squeeze of lemon is all that it needs). The jambalaya was seasoned well, had a good amount of Andouille sausage, and good tomato flavor throughout. The hushpuppies were fried to a nice golden brown and had a hint of sweetness to them, although I did find them a bit dense. The seafood gumbo was my least favorite item on the plate. I felt it was a little on the bland side and it could have used a little heat. Overall, the food was tasty, portion sizes are very generous, and the service was friendly. The dining atmosphere was inviting and had a nice kitschy decor. There's no parking lot so you will have to find street parking or public parking. read more

The gentleman at the bar that took care of me was very attentive and poured the beer quite well. Had lunch here with my family. Walleye, pulled pork, chicken pasta dish, and chicken potatoes. Great beer selection. Atmosphere is fantastic. Vintage signs from beer to motor oil. Fun place to hang out. Poutine for the app. Loved the pot roast meat as an added touch. Portions were very large. I would definitely recommend. Very disappointed. We have come to Buzzard Billy's many times over the years. Today on a Sunday evening before 5pm. As we walked in 3 waitresses were outside playing with a puppy. We walked up to the hostess stand thinking we would be seated quickly as there was 4 open tables. We were told it was going to be 20min wait... After 20min we were seated at one of the booths that was empty from the time we got there. Myself being a bartending/waitress I understand busy times and having a wait, but when waitresses have time to be outside with a puppy or hanging out in the room behind the host stand being on their phone that is when I can not excuse the what appeared to be an unnecessary wait time. My husband asked about the prime rib wanting to know when it was first roasted as typically prime rib is slow roasted hours before then trimmed off when ordered. In town for a conference and decided to skip conference lunch. This spot was literally outside the door of Holiday Inn. As I walked in there wasn't a person posted at the entrance. I waited a bit and sat at the bar. Still no one for about 5 minutes. A little slow on service. I'm not sure if that was because they were busy for amount of staff. I ordered the cajun combo. My favorite was definitely the jambalaya. I enjoyed the flavoring and spice of this dish. It definitely was a first bite surprise. The seafood gumbo was solid. I added a bit of extra sauce on it to bring it up a notch. That settled it in. Others mentioned the blackened catfish fillet being a bit small. I would tend to agree it is smaller then your usual catfish fillet. The fish was excellent, moist, and overall a pleasure. I didnt bother ruining it by smothering it with tartar sauce. A squeze of lemon sufficed. Once Megan settled in as my waitress the food came quickly, the drinks stayed full, and the check was brought quickly. Good job to her! Overall, a 4/5. A little quicker acknowledgement, seating, and better smell would bump this up. It was on par with my other southern cajun experiences. read more

Atmosphere: The vibe was nice, and the decor brought the place to life. It was bustling when we got there. My friend and I didn't have to wait long for our seats. Staff: Our waitress was rude, we had asked her to cancel one of our appetizers and she told us, that she would have to tell the manager it wasn't her that made the mistake... This was barely five minutes when we placed the order for our appetizers. In my experience, the staff do NOT argue with their customers about changing an order. She also could not tell us the difference between the gator appetizer and the alligator meal... She just said the strips would be larger. How do you not know your own menu? Food: I was not impressed the crawfish étouffée, every bite was permeated with black pepper. I couldn't taste the crunch of the celery, and I didn't taste any tomatoes at all. The Muenster Cheese curds were decent. My friends alligator platter was alright, it came with fries, hush puppies and alligator strips and some coleslaw. The hush puppies were sweet and nicely fried. Buzzard Billy's has been a staple of my diet since I was a wea boy. It carries more to me than just good food. The nice atmosphere does not put any pressure on what I should be wearing. If your cool enough to hang mounted fish on fans they aren't going to care about the stains I am about to make on my shirt. I have eaten here quite a few times so I will try and cover the highlights. I ordered a few things last week so I will use those pics. Buzzard Billy's is on of the few places around here that offers awesome Cajian Cuisine. My three favorite things from there are. 1. Armadillo eggs - These guys are the things that give me the most joy. Each layer of it is better then the next. Its an Egg-shaped protein packed heart stopper. A crunchy crust of bacon, a delicate delicious chicken, and its molten core is made of pepper jack cheese and jalapeño. It comes from the kitchen piping hot and the home-made ranch side is to die for. Dipping these not only cools it down but brings a refreshing lightness to a heavenly heavy morsel. If I could get one for every day, I would probably die a lot sooner but I would also die so very happy. 2. Mean green- This is available in a couple of different ways, the ways I have had it are the wings and the nachos. I love me some good wings and these are them, I am a ranch man and the mean green and the tight white are just right for me. Have a stained 2 to 3 shirts here eating these things? Yes. Me and an old friend went on a quest to find the best nachos and these are probably them. The price to quantity is out of this world. I think we ordered them thinking it would be a starter. It finished both of us. 3. The Cajun combo- This is me introducing you to a small page in a great book of a cuisine. This plate comes with a blackened Catfish (which is a herb rub medley foraged in flame) a half order of Andouille and ham jambalaya and a cup of seafood gumbo and hushpuppies. Cajun in general is so full of flavor and really shows you there's a lot out there that's great that you are missing out on! protips-order a side of ranch to take home to dirty many more shirts and cure your mouth depression. Get curbside pickup or take out as there is no deduction of profit for deliveries. They also are selling 30$ gift cards for 25$ at the moment. Over all this place offers many great choices with a comfortable vibe. With all the craziness happening right now pro tip for this place is to order it on a week day as they typically have lines with 25% of staff and seating available. They are also available on eat street and grabbit. I am so happy I decided to come here as the food is excellent. I started with the gigantic mozzarella sticks and they did not disappoint. I then had the Cajun Combo and it was very good. The gumbo was not my favorite but I can overlook that as the blackened catfish was the best I've ever had. The jambalaya was very good as well with a nice amount of spice.
