Located inside the boutique hotel - Charmant - is the bar and restaurant. The kitchen is open and there is kitchen side seating if you wanted to watch them prepare dishes... but it can be a bit loud. The server - Landon - was very professional and detail oriented when discussing specials and items on the menu. Had the scallops and they were delicious. The lamb dish was also very flavorful. Ended the meal with a well made espresso martini. The dessert options did not really appeal to us, so we did not partake. This year, we included The Charmant in our Christmas Eve itinerary. We enjoyed dinner first before heading across the street to see the Rotary Light Display. The front desk clerk was very helpful and friendly when we arrived and directed us in the right direction. We had a great conversation about cell phone cameras. Our waiter was also super friendly and very knowledgeable. I was wowed by the extensive list of wine, beer, scotch, bourbon, and whiskey. I enjoyed one glass of wine, which teased the thousands of taste buds in my mouth. The French Onion soup was the best I have ever had. On my next visit to The Charmant the French Onion soup is all I want. The scallops I ordered were served on a bed of wild rice with toasted walnuts. The rice was also the best I have tasted. Service was excellent, went on a Thursday night during a weekend away. Goat cheese and honey appetizer was amazing. My wife had the salmon which was the best she has had since we moved up here 4 years ago. I had the ribeye which was cooked exactly how I ordered (a big plus since everywhere else always overcooks the steaks). The only negative was the French onion soup which to my taste was a little bland and not quite as strong as I am used to (although I admit I am picky about this particular soup). So we went to dinner here 2 nights ago and breakfast this morning. I will start with the ingredients were all great. You can tell good ingredients. Friday dinner was steak frites and the steak was a little tough, Brussels sprouts overly sweet. Salad was decent- we gave that a 3.5. Breakfast was better. My husband rated the granola bowl a 5. I had the scramble and honestly it seemed under cooked and under seasoned. So were the fingerling potatoes. Bacon great. We're staying at the Charmant Hotel in La Crosse for a second time. We tried the restaurant for the first time...and we're so glad we did. We ventured from our room to the restaurant on a comfortable Sunday morning and discovered that their Weekend Brunch is popular. Their dining room was "fully committed" per the hostess. She offered us seating in the bar with a full menu and service. It was comfortable and our server was prompt and pleasant. I ordered the Shakshuka with a side of bacon and potatoes. My wife chose the Charmant Breakfast with scrambled eggs and link sausage. Both were excellent. The stars of the meal were the crispy smashed breakfast potatoes and the bacon and sausage from a local meat purveyor - St. Joe's Country Market. I seldom use this statement in my review but I'm going to use it here - "the best bacon I've ever tasted!" - and that's the truth. It was thick cut, smoked perfectly, and tender. Grilled to perfection. The sausage links were also good, but not to the degree of the bacon. We both loved the crispy smashed breakfast potatoes. The eggs were expertly prepared, and the Shakshuka was flavorful with its tomatoes, peppers, and feta cheese. The Restaurant at the Charmant is a serious contender for breakfast in La Crosse. The mushroom bolognese was the most disappointing meal. It just tasted like noodles and watered down mushrooms, no flavor at all. I took two bites and pushed it aside and just ate my fries (those were really good). Was asked if I wanted a box and said no. Surprised the waitress didn't ask why, she just took my completely full bowl away. I was also sitting alone and it wasn't busy. Did not get a water refill. I can't believe I paid $25 for that entree. Usually the food here is good, I don't know how that made it on the menu. Is there not supposed to be even a touch of tomato paste or cream or something in this? Just minced mushroom. read more

What used to be an old candy factory is now turned into a hotel with this as its flagship restaurant, and within a small town like La Crosse, I was very impressed with the place here. ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 9/10 The restaurant and hotel are structured fittingly as a high end dining experience within a boutique hotel and makes for a great dinner spot. Overall the scenery and setting was nice for dinner. SERVICE: 9/10 Service was excellent. Our waitress was very friendly and familiar with the menu and overall, I had a good experience. FOOD: 9/10 Duck Confit - 10/10 - This was utterly fantastic. Very seldomly do I order duck off the menu at a western style restaurant as I am so used to Asian style duck that very little can compete with Peking duck. However, if there is anything that is on that same tier, this would be it. I'd have never guessed this would be that good. The duck was moist, seasoned to perfection and the citrus flavors of the sauce it came with complemented the dish perfectly. I cannot say that I have had a duck dish on this level from a western restaurant. Steak Frites - 8/10 - This was a pretty standard steak and fries dish. It was nothing that would stand out to me amongst other steaks, but it was not bad. Next to the duck though, this far paled in comparison. VALUE: 8/10 This is a higher end restaurant so of course, it is pricey. However, for what you are getting, I find it very reasonable. If I could give the rooftop service, food and drink a zero, I would. Ordered a wine for $12 that tasted worse than a $3 bottle from Trader Joe's. Ordered 2 of the pizzas, looked decent enough however HOLY SALT!! It was barely edible. Our waitress was nonexistent. After our drinks and pizzas were dropped at our table we never saw her again. Finally did go get our check, walked away without clearing any dirty dishes. Grabbed a guy that said he was a manager, explained the bad service and salty pizza. This was his reply "That's how they make them here." Proceeded to grab our dishes and walked away. What kind of place is this?? Such a cute place! Had a solo lunch here after scoping out the menu before hand. I was happy to see they had a Croque Madame on the menu. I absolutely love Croques. But this one wasn't cooked well, the egg still had that slimy clear stuff around the yoke. So it should've been cooked slightly longer, maybe it's a personal preference. But the bread was thick and dusty IMO not good. The fries were amazing. Service was good. Apparently no wine menu or drinks at lunch. That seemed a little odd so I ordered a iced tea which was great. I also had the cauliflower and now it's my mission to figure out how to make it - best cauliflower of my life. What a weird vegetable to get excited over... but it was so good. Went back for breakfast the next day and had the croque monsieur and was transported back to my first trip to Paris. The little chocolate shop inside is to die for and the location, view, building and service spot on. Willl definitely be on my list of places to stay next time I'm in town. This is my third visit to the Charmant's restaurant, and will likely be my last. I was a guest this time, or else I probably wouldn't have even gone this time. As a venue that promotes its dining room as being so upscale, I have yet to have a decent meal there. I love LaCrosse and want to continue to have friends and family visit here, but if this dining room represents the best that we can offer...? Today's experience was pretty familiar. I arrived at the hotel/restaurant and first found myself grappling with the humongous front door. In their defense, a doorman is often on duty. I always thought that it was just some of their pretentious marketing schtik, But now I realize that a doorman is essential. Yes, the huge glass door IS that heavy. No hostess greeted me at the entrance of the dining room; two servers had their backs to the entrance, deeply engrossed in a private conversation. That wasn't a problem though, because there were only two tables occupied in the open floor space. (Since the pandemic, many of the familiar lunch places in town have remained closed, so I was surprised to see that the dining room didn't have more business. Then I remembered that the food on previous occasions had been pretty dismal... Not to mention expensive... So I guess I wasn't surprised.) The rest of the party had already given drink orders and I was asked very quickly if I wanted anything. The waiter was attentive and efficient. The server took orders for lunch in a timely fashion, and I had settled upon a salad, the "Red Rock Salad," described as "Roelli Red Rock greens, walnut, pear, apple cider vinaigrette." The salad arrived shortly and I was curious when I could not distinguish ANY pears. The plate was heaped with curly leaf lettuce, and about a dozen cubes of some kind of orange cheese. There were six walnut halves... But pear? I finally found three slices of shaved pear that must have been cut on a very sharp mandoline...you could easily read this review right through them. Oh, did I mention that there were CHEESE CUBES distributed throughout? And if there was any vinaigrette at all, I certainly didn't find it. I am really not the kind of person who complains very much, but at our table we had JUST had a discussion about whether or not items should be dealt with when they are found to be less than satisfactory. So I felt that I would be very disingenuous to NOT say anything. (However, since I was a guest, I didn't want to make a fuss that would embarrass the hostess in anyway, since she is the world's nicest person.) Our server couldn't help but notice my plate after she had cleared everyone else's, and it was apparent that it was barely touched. I told her that it wasn't exactly what I had expected, and she said, "Oh, I'm sorry." She didn't offer to talk to the chef; she didn't offer to take it off of my friends tab... She didn't even ask what the problem was. Three words and that was it. The kitchen has been in trouble since soon after the place opened. Obviously, they haven't resolved the many issues. The server needs training. The menu needs to provide offerings that appeal to the clientele; something is wrong when one of the few lunch places in La Crosse can't attract more than 10 people during lunch hour. I am extremely spoiled in that I travel quite a bit, and I just got back from a month in New York City, so I'm not really phased by celebrity chefs or foodie emporiums. I think that I set my expectation level for food/service in LaCrosse at a pretty fair place. I am blown away by places like Lovechild and by people like Jen Barney at Meringue, but usually I am pretty satisfied with a bowl of soup at PIckerman's. But if the Charmant wants to really BE an upscale property and NOT just be an upscale WANNABE, they really have to step up their act. I won't be back. read more

Great location and a beautiful historic building ... I grew up in the area but since moved away. Always heard of the luxury dining at the Charmant. It could be. We had brunch seated around an open air kitchen. Filthy looking. Sad chefs. Dripping pancake batter and many plastic cheap bagel bags ect. The food was ok. I had eggs Benny. Nothing special but very edible. The tables and windows were also in need of cleaning. Don't let this stop you from trying a dining experience here. I just might be back for dinner someday. I've never stayed at this hotel before, but I've always wanted to dine in their restaurant, therefore we decided to stop in for Sunday brunch. When we first entered the building, the lobby was quite nice, and the atmosphere was very welcoming. The vibe was relaxed and not pretentious at all. The decor incorporated a balanced juxtaposition between rustic/vintage and modern/industrial. The interior still retained many of its original charms such as the dark weathered hardwood floors and exposed brick walls which blended seamlessly with the modern fixtures. However, I digress... When we approached the dining area, we were greeted by a friendly host and seated right away. I also had made a reservation earlier that week, which I recommend doing so for peak days and holidays. The dining area faces out to the park and river so I'd recommend grabbing a table by the window that way you can enjoy the view as you dine. I ordered the Smoked Salmon Benedict, Brioche French Toast (to share, and with no nuts), and my friend ordered the Shakshuka. Everything was visually appealing, and their presentation made the food even more appetizing. The smoked salmon in the benedict came through nicely and didn't compete with the flavor of the decadent hollandaise sauce. The benedict also came with a side of lightly dressed mixed greens which helped cut through the richness of the hollandaise. The French toast was alright, and not overly sweet, which I appreciated. However, I felt it was soaked in the egg mixture a tad too long because it produced a soggier toast in the middle and on one end of the toast it tasted slightly burnt as if the griddle was unevenly heated. Overall, food was pretty good, prices were relatively reasonable, and the ambiance provided a very enjoyable dining experience. Service was excellent and very attentive. I'd recommend it and I wouldn't mind returning again. read more

The Charmant used to be one of my favorite places for breakfast/brunch. However, now that they have switched from their delicious breakfast menu to an overpriced continental breakfast buffet, I will have to find a new favorite. The problem is neither the buffet nor the continental breakfast ideas per se, but rather the quality. The egg frittatas were cold, stiff, and hard to chew. The bread items (quick breads, croissants, pain au chocolat) seemed store bought rather than house made. The cereal option was rice Chex. There were flies buzzing around the food. The smoked salmon and bagel accoutrements were the only bright spot in this otherwise disappointing experience. I know it's a hard time for restaurants, but this change seems a misguided attempt to save money and will not be a good fit for the community. read more

The best hotel and experience I have ever had. We traveled with our 6 week old and we were terrified. The hotel was so accommodating- put us in a room away from the elevators, provided a pack n play, hot water for bottles, and ice when needed. The restaurant in the lobby and well as the bar/lounge is so comfortable we had drinks there twice. The coffee shop is so cute and so nice to have downstairs especially in the winter. We were supposed to stay only one night and extended to two nights. Every staff member from server to valet was a pleasure. We can't wait to travel back soon. read more

Fresh romaine and the dressing was very good. The Roasted Chicken was cooked perfectly. The star of the show was the staff manning the kitchen bar. Beautiful hotel with the friendliest staff. My stay at the Charmant was comfortable and classy. From the gorgeous exposed brick walls and drapes to the special touches in decor all throughout the building, it's such a charming place. You can grab a drink at the rooftop bar or in the lobby, and there are plenty of comfortable seating areas. The top floor has private balconies perfect for a cozy night in or an evening outside with friends. The Parlor downstairs has great breakfast. Try the lox and bagel or the breakfast sandwich on a croissant if you're looking for something yummy! read more

A disappointment here. The hotel is lovely and I have reviewed as such. The bar and dining room were a disappointment as far as service and some food issues. I was told they have lost their exec Chef so perhaps this will be remedied. For the ambiance and price point you should get top service and not have insulting comments from the waiter such as: the menu can be complicated let me know if you need help! This for a one page menu that calls a caprese salad a tomato salad so I think we can decider. Perhaps just say: If you have questions I'd be happy to answer. We laughed ... was it ageism? What was going on here (we're well travelled and my husband has literally been all over the world). Not happy with a skimpy wine pour, note the photo. A tip: a fair or generous pour garners a second glass although we were never asked! One meal was very good (lamb dish) the other over cooked pasta served lukewarm and a shame as it was tasty. Mass produced French rolls also seemed off. If you're a foodie this is not for you. If not, you may not notice and may be happy in a lovely room. **The manager graciously contacted me after I filled out the survey after checkout. His response was all you'd hope for. Well I have eaten here well over a dozen times and ordered in the bar lounge at least the same amount. Up until yesterday I would have easily rated it a 5 star experience. However, this past time has tilted the scales so poorly out of favor that I doubt I'll be back. I stay here every time I travel for work in the area, which is approx 2 weeks out of the year. I have Celiac and I have to be careful about dining when I travel. To date, I've only had one scare at the restaurant at the Charmant. Most of the time, the service has been outstanding and the food terrific. Tonight however, we were the first table seated so the restaurant was slow. And we overheard both the sous chef and the chef complain loudly when my order went in. I was mortified. I am the furthest thing from a high maintenance customer. Yes we ordered the same appetizer yesterday as it was fantastic. I have literally zero control over the fact I have a medical condition that precludes me from eating gluten. There is no medication. It is strict avoidance of gluten in my diet or I risk a whopping 77x higher risk for cancer and a whole host of other medical complications. After working a long day and not having eaten, I look forward to my dinner at a good restaurant. And we definitely pay for the experience and food here. This was uncalled for and it ruined my appetite. We took our food to go and quietly excused ourselves. We will not be back. Educate yourselves. You ought to be embarrassed. And I sincerely hope that this does not repeat itself for someone else. Incidentally, the only inquiry I ever make about my food is a disclaimer that I have celiac and a confirmation that they let the chef know and confirm the food I order is gluten free. I know high maintenance people. I am not that person. I am simply someone with an uncontrollable food allergy asking to safely dine in your establishment. read more

Some of the most expensive menu items in town--however, the food was akin to Texas Road House or Olive Garden. $55 steak. Comes with two potato wedges and--that's it. Salad is extra. Also has some sort of soybean oil sauce on it. Shame on me for not reading the menu thoroughly if in fact it's stated there will be sauce on the steak. I like mine with no cheap A1 sauce. Hostess wearing jeans, while the others were in uniform. Jeans are fine, but if you're charging high-end, act high-end. My cocktail came in a plastic glass, and about 3/4 full. To be fair, my wife's drink was spot on and filled to the rim. Same owner as the Waterfront Restaurant---but wow no comparison. In all categories, food, staff, etc, Chamant is a 2 star. Waterfront is a 5. So why? My guess is the management, but only a guess. read more

Beautiful and charming. We haven't seen a hotel of this quality in the U.S. in many places. We stay in hotels more often than the average person due to our jobs. We stayed one night, enjoyed our chocolate very much, and loved our drinks in the lobby. The staff was very friendly and offered help with our rental Tesla (not fun for a first time with a Tesla...long story.) Great job, Charmant. Want to go back to La Crosse just for the hotel. read more
