I go to Calvin with all of my computer issues. From Hardware to Software, Calvin has never failed to help me. I had a bad drive with important data on it and by thinking outside the box Calvin got me access to the drive and I was able to recover my data and store it in the cloud. Eventually that computer died and I had issues with getting the same full software functions running on the new computer. Some of the upgrades that came with my new computer actually severely limited my productivity. In around 30 minutes Calvin had my full functions back and tweaked the UI to my liking. What a terrible experience working with Calvin and his office staff at C&C Computer Systems in San Mateo. Typically I love to support local establishments, but I would definitely warn my neighbors against this place, and here's why. My experience says that they are super-disorganized and unassertive about communicating. After something like two months of problems (which come up - hard drives are quirky, I guess), I took my broken hard drive home to start over. Several weeks ago I brought my broken iOmega hard drive to C&C and Calvin - the owner - said he'd replace one of the two drive (the failed one) and -- after some back and forth on the phone -- said restore the data from the intact one. He told me that he has software for ensuring the replication occurs properly - "very expensive software" - and therefore he would need to charge me a little bit over $100 for the data transfer process - to amortize his investment in the special software. OK. After several weeks I became concerned and contacted Calvin. I actually don't remember what happened. But somehow things hadn't gotten started. OK. Then Calvin bumped into a problem. Something was wrong. He left me messages. I called back, but somehow Calvin is never there. I talked to his office assistant several times. OK. So after several weeks of back and forth - litterally not being able to talk to each other - I provided my email address and pleaded that they simply explain the problem, the cost, and get the job done. OK. After another week or so, no communication, I went to C & C (of course Calvin was not there), picked up my broken drive, and went home. What a bummer! read more

I came here for a hard drive repair based on the decent reviews on Yelp. Unfortunately, my experience was far from great and I wanted to contribute a review. In summary, I did not receive the promised call about the status of the drive and when I called to follow up, it took an hour for them to actually look into the problem. I was then told it was recoverable and I agreed to the service. Several days later, I did not hear back, and when I called, it was clear they haven't even started working on it. Once they started the work, they told me that it's actually NOT recoverable and it's still at 1% of the progress. It feels like the people here don't really care about being on time, customer service, or being courteous. They were quick to quote a relatively high price and dropped the ball when it came to doing the work. I should have read the other bad reviews here more carefully and not wasted my time here. read more

Wonderful! Fantastic! Great! The LCD screen on my macbook cracked and a CD got stuck in the disk drive as well. I went to the Apple store and they told me it would cost $445 to repair the LCD screen, ONLY. Fortunately, we found C & C Computer Systems!! They took my laptop in that day and even though it took approximately a week for me to get it back, they ordered the LCD screen and repaired it, and repaired the disk drive! The total cost for the screen was only half of what Apple had quoted me. I am a very satisfied customer and will definitely return if I have further problems! read more

I've been here twice, and both times Calvin has been extraordinarily helpful and affordable. The first time, there was nothing particularly the matter with my laptop, besides the fact that it was 8+ years old. He added a new RAM, cleaned up the hard drive, added a new security system, and just generally sprinkled fairy dust on the old thing - all for ~ $100. It was practically new again! A year later, as my laptop approaches it's 10th anniversary, it's still humming along. The second time, my CD/DVD drive wasn't working very well. When I dropped off the computer, I made a passing reference to my unemployment; when I picked it up the next day, he'd replaced the drive with one scavenged from another laptop to save me money (didn't charge me for parts, only minimal labor). I should have brought it to C & C sooner, as the Apple Store talked me into replacing the hard drive, when that had nothing to do with the problem! So I came to see Calvin at C & C about two weeks ago to get some work done on my 2006 MacBook, which by now is considered a dinosaur. Before heading to Calvin I was in the market to make my macbook faster, get a bigger hard drive and update my old OS operating system. And of course I did some homework on options & sought out advice. The first place I went to was a blessing & a curse. The Apple Store. I told them I wanted a faster computer, bigger hard drive & new OS. And all i got from them was BS. They said I had 2 gigs of ram in my macbook so it couldn't go faster. My Macbook has only 512 mb of ram. I said I wanted a 500 gig hard drive, they said the maximum for my MacBook was maybe 320 gig. And to go from OS Tiger to OS Snow Leopard I had to buy the MacBox Set for $140 with tax. They said I couldn't go from Tiger to Snow Leopard with just the install disc. I have to buy the box set. And the other reviews for places on the peninsula wanted lots of $$$. Alas I go to yelp and type in Mac Repair & I see all the wonderful reviews for C & C Computer System & that Calvin is the man to talk to, and he is and he is awesome. I went in on a saturday (May 28th) and was at the store right when it opened at 10 am. Calvin was pleased to listen to what I wanted and gave great advice for options. So after talking Calvin told me he could put in a 500 gig hard drive no problem I only had a 80 gig before, he also confirmed that I had only 512 mb of ram not 2 gigs like the moron at the apple store kept insisting. So I went from 512mb to 2 gigs of ram. So I had a clean install done. I asked Calvin how long the upgrades would take and I was shocked when he said "Two Hours Tops" Wow!!! That was great to hear, I thought it would be longer because I noticed he had alot of stuff to work on. So I walked down the street & got a breakfast burrito and went to watch Hang Over 2, and once the movie was over my MacBook was ready for pick up. Calvin gave me the option of installing OS Snow Leopard but I declined because he told me I could upgrade it on my own. And his prices are beyond reasonable. For my new 500 gig Hard Drive, 2 gigs of Ram & labor the grand total was $170. Wow talk about a great deal. The other places on the peninsula kept quoting me $300 & up and that the repairs could take a week. And my MacBook is running the OS Snow Leopard with no problems. I am a long time yelp lurker but seldom post. After my experience with Calvin at C&C I felt compelled to add my two cents. After my Mac Book Pro's hard drive crashed (sigh) I called several places to get an estimate on a new hd. Given the specific job needed I was somewhat surprised at the wide range of prices quoted. I brought the machine to Calvin who told me I could pick it up the next morning (hooray!). The next day when I picked it up I was told a 250G HD was installed - not a smaller HD........but at the same price. Sweet. Kudos to C&C and have no qualms in referring my friends to them. read more

My dog ate my hard drive.... ...okay....not exactly, but he chewed on the cord when I stepped away and the hard drive fell onto the floor and my computer was no longer able to read the drive. After seeing the wonderful reviews for Calvin at C&C, I brought in my hard drive. He tried numerous things, but was unable to recover my pictures because a piece inside the drive was broken. I was bummed and didn't really want to spend a thousand bucks to get it recovered from a specialist. Luckily, I remembered I had an old laptop that died a year ago from a virus. Calvin was able to FIX the old laptop and recovered all of the files. He backed up the photos onto a new hard drive and got my dinky old laptop back into working condition. He also did not charge me for the hours that he spent on the broken hard drive!! So the net cost was much lower than I expected. Love the service! Great service and reasonable rates! Calvin is the man! Here's my experience. My laptop screen had a dead backlight, pretty much leaving it in complete darkness and completely useless. I brought it in for Calvin to take a look at it and he had the backlight replaced in one day. However when I brought it home, I noticed that the backlight was making a humming noise which got louder depending on the brightness of the screen. I called Calvin and told him about it and brought it back the next day. When I brought it in the next day he said that was normal with new backlights and the only way to avoid that humming sound would be to replace the whole LCD screen. He gave me a very good deal to the replace the LCD for just a small fee instead of paying for full service. That was very kind of him to do that. When I came back in the next day, my laptop looked brand spanking new with the new LCD! Calvin really did a great job with my laptop. One morning, part of my laptop screen stopped working (which may or may not have to do with the fact that I stepped on it). After discovering that Staples wanted to charge me nearly $600 to replace the screen (more than what I paid for the laptop) plus the fact that it would take over a week, C&C quoted me a very reasonable $180 and a turn-around time of 2 hours. They were very professional in handling my laptop, letting me know when the part came in, and also allowing me to test it out in-store before I paid for everything. My laptop kept cycling starting/restarting. In addition, when my friend tried to 'help' me - it caused an even bigger issue: my windows profile (w/ all my profile data & pics & music & files) was lost. =( Calvin found all my data (whew!) and I tested my laptop to verify no more issues w/ blue screen/restart cycle. As soon as I got home, it shutdown + restarted on me again! I called Calvin late the next business day and they stayed open just so I could bring my computer in again. I have a 2008 black MacBook and the fan was getting crazy loud and the laptop itself was getting scathingly hot, which led to odd little things happening, such as text being selected, something I was typing deleting itself, ect. My boyfriend (an IT specialist) mentioned that my laptop could be getting hot enough to screw with the motherboard. Now, I'm not exactly tech savvy beyond using my laptop and my smart phone so I looked up computer repair on Yelp in the midst of a mini panic attack. Motherboard melting equals new laptop equals spending money I don't have equals me being screwed over. Not fun. Luckily, I found C&C Computer Systems. I called them on Thursday and explained what I thought was wrong with my laptop. He told me I probably needed a new fan and gave me an estimate of the labor cost and price of the new part. With the Yelp discount, it was just under $100. He said he'd call me when the new fan came in, approximately 2-3 business days. I got a call Monday to bring it in and I was told it would be ready for me the next morning. I picked it up about an hour ago and here we are! The service was very courteous and professional and he didn't treat me like an idiot, which I really appreciated. Some people seem to feel the need to talk down to you if you're not as technically savvy as they are (I've had some poor experiences in an Apple Store) I deffo recommend C&C for any problems you may have with your computer or laptop. read more

After looking at all the reviews here, I decided to give C&C a chance and see what they could do with my annoying grating fan. I first called in to make sure they did such repairs (then I realized "oh, oops--Keiko S. had a fan problem too that they dealt with") or whatnot, talked to Andy and he was very courteous over the phone. I come in and meet Calvin, we diagnose the problem, and he said we needed to replace the fan--but the fan for my particular laptop is not only out of stock, but super expensive if bought from the manufacturer, suggesting I find a more inexpensive way to obtain a replacement fan and he'll replace it for me. I come back 6 days later with another fan in tow, he remembers me, what we talked about, and the price we agreed on, and told me to come back in half an hour...and he's done! =D Reasonable, trustworthy, and quick! Calvin to the rescue and what a rescuer he is! My external hard drive decided it had had enough and was ready to take a long rest, taking 10 years or so of backed up work with it. I thought I had also been backing up the work into the cloud only to find out that nothing had backed up to the cloud like I had been paying for, for years. After a good spell of panic, despair, and more panic I looked on Yelp for a miracle worker and saw that Calvin was highly rated for bringing computers back to life. I called him and he said to bring the external hard drive in and he would see what he could do. I dropped it off on a Friday and got a call from him less than a week later that he had been able to restore the data. He was quick, efficient, and very, very reasonable in terms of pricing. I have been needing to post this review for more than a month, but haven't had the time. Their service is unbelievably exceptional. The people are extremely nice, patient, understanding and they obviously know how to make customers happy. I let a friend borrow my laptop while I used the desktop at work. She ended up being the victim of drive-by malaware and unfortunately, I didn't have much time to work on it, so I brought the laptop here. I also brought an external hard drive so they could move all the files onto it. They were able to move the files. The only issue was having to reinstall the OS and drivers. I came in on Saturday and really needed the laptop, but they weren't able to reinstall the OS on Friday. They were busy. Since I have a background in IT, I stayed there and reinstalled the OS, drivers, software, files, etc myself. So, I was sitting back there with the owner doing my thing while he was fixing other computers. I witnessed how he conducts business with his customers and really need to compliment him. His service, personality and way he communicated with his customers was exceptional. My God, he was even extremely nice and patient with a sales guy that was tying up his time trying to sell him a glass cleaner product. Fortunately, I was able to get the sales guy to leave. I could see the owner was too nice to ask him to leave. The phone was ringing, he had a deadline to finish another customer's computer, and he was the only one working that day. I figured the sales guy didn't know I was actually a customer. He ended up billing me $180, but I paid him extra for all the time they spent on it and for allowing me to sit there and do the rest. read more

Got there, told them about the problem, they understood completely and fixed it in less than 3 hours at about 20% of the price that Dell would have charged me.
