The 3 stars is pure nostalgia and a super cool sign that brings back two huge memories for me....... The first is that it was a landmark of sorts when we were coming home from Lake Tahoe. We knew that we would be out of our misery soon as a kid the trip to Tahoe (4-6 hours) took literally decades......... Are we there yet? The other memory is of my mother. I learned to cook and bake from my mom. We were a generic family in that we did not buy name brands. Oh How I envied those kids that got to drink real Tang lol in stead of the generic version but I digress. The ONLY brand we got was C&H sugar and so whenever we would bake or mom was baking we would always sing a few rounds of the C&H song while helping or waiting oh so impatiently to lick the beaters. Funny how I could not wait to grow up and now I would kill for those simple times. The sad note is that the reason they do not make sugar in Hawaii is that they no longer can exploit people ala the 16 Tons song and have to pay a minimum wage thus they get the cane sugar overseas. So called "dark brown" sugar hasn't been dark for the past couple of years. No good any more. Then when you go to the C&H website to give feedback, they make you put in the UPC code, and then tell you that it is incorrect and won't let you submit the form, so you actually can't give them any feedback and it is just a waste of time. So C&H is disrespectful of customer on two points: cheapening product and thinking people won't notice (they did & are complaining online), and setting up technical roadblocks to feedback. read more

(the product, not the factory). per wikipedia, the crockett facility has received it's last shipment from Hawaii as it's source rotates to a more profitable crop. the plant will process sugar cane from it's other sources. i've seen the factory decades ago while driving over the bridge. looked nice then. C & H has been sold a few times since then. last time in 2006 to the company which brands Domino and other sugar labels. long story short-C & H sugar is preferred by many cooks who believe cane sugar is sweeter than it's beet sugar cousins(Spreckles, White Satin, Holly, Western, etc.). f.y.i. The main building itself looks the worse for wear, with broken windows&sometimes the sign itself is darkened&dim. C&H received its final raw sugar shipment from Hawaii (the H of C&H) last year, a "sugar ship" from Maui. In terms of sugar, C&H has quality product for the price. You can find their sugar for cheap at Walmart&Dollar Tree. It's useful for cooking, sweetening coffee, you name it. They've expanded to agave syrup. Someone at C&H hates me... Do you know where Crockett, CA is? I did not until today. While I love their sugar products... this morning at 5am I get a call asking for help. I'm not sure what it is for. Then for the next 10 mins I get a barrage of calls following it. I decide it is someone pulling a prank on me and I turn off the phone. When I turn it back on at 9am I have 6 voice mails from people asking for help. WTH?!?!?! I proceed to go about my business, but this number keeps calling, and weird half numbers. It turns out... C&H has forwarded one of their main lines to my cellphone! So unbeknown to anyone that is calling me, asking for help about sugar, they keep getting me! I didn't know it was C & H until the 20th call later when I finally just give up because I am just going crazy at the call volume and I haven't even gotten done with work yet trying to sort this out. I call back the numbers which is the number listed with the yelp address here, and dial the extension one of the people who called me said they were calling and you know what? I get ME! I have called C&H Sugar to find my cellphone at this one extension! I do not even work there. So I try to call customer service, but the line is busy. I hope that someone will figure this out so that I can go to work and get some work done. But nothing happens and the calls continue. At noon I am finally able to reach someone and tell her the issue. She tries that extension and ends up calling me back. GAH! Needless to say eventually they fixed the issue and was really nice about it, but I lost 3 hours of sleep and half a morning of work, and I really hate my cellphone now. When I hear it ring I shudder. Normally I would have given them a rocking rating, but I am exhausted beyond belief today, and was totally annoyed. Although the lady I talked to was totally nice and helpful. They are lucky I am not the angry type. And luckily in the end I just wanted the evil calls to stop. One star for the basics, and one star for the lady who picked up my call. Minus 3 stars for my hassle! I had to troubleshoot their issues MYSELF!!! Please C&H hear my plea. Take it for what it's worth, talking with long time faithful locals the place is beginning to show an object attitude vs the old let's be family. It it clearly show to bring moral down. Personally I see it as a loss in quallitive/quantative production. (that is just my opinion and it does not represent the location itself) talking to the locals I feel and understand how knowledgable they are of what can make it better. But one can not know the final solution without having "ALL" the fact placed into the equation. On the better side of it, there is so much history and Americana life poring out of the architecture that should in fact be preserved. A true representation of our American work force history....... I talked to my neighbor who sent me across the street to a second neighbor who gave me the number of someone at the factory. I left a message and an hour later she called back. She was helpful, answered all my questions about one of the two sounds disturbing our abode. It's almost manageable. I guess we'll adjust. Understanding the reasons for the sounds makes it a little easier, so I appreciate their response. Thanks! Living on the side of Crockett is not for sissies. I suggest the Valona end away from the main road where you're awoken by motorcyclist leaving Port Costa. But then you lose the water view. read more

While I appreciate that Crockett is a factory town and folks have been working here since the 1800s -- I still cannot abide by the level of noise I'm subjected to 24/7. It is 2:33 AM and all I can hear is a loud, mechanical, droning hum from every gddmn room in my house... and I mean LOUD... not some ambient noise. Not some nice, "white noise" that you can just drift off to sleep to. It's like a giant 18 wheel truck, idling loudly outside your window that you keep waiting to shut off... After a year and a half, I don't think I can take much more. I don't know how anyone lives here long term. read more

I've lived in Crockett for about 8 years now, and C&H has always been a small nuisance, but as of lately they have really been quite disruptive! The noises that come from this refinery are unearthly and extremely loud sometimes. There is an old steam whistle that blows every day around 12pm, and also blows to signal the volunteer fire department. But at night sometimes they will let steam release from the whistle for hours at a time! it makes a low annoying whistling sound that is loud enough for the entire town to hear. The worst/scariest noise is at around 3am sometimes it sounds like a bomb went off or something, the sound shakes the house and gives me a heart attack! I've called to have somebody contact me so I can know why these noises are necessary but until they do reach back to me I guess my my father and I as well as the entire city of Crockett, CA will have to live with it :/ The only reason they are worthy of two stars is because I still love their products read more

I love seeing this old factory each time I drive across the Carquinas Bridge or walk down to the marina (I live in Glen Cove across the water from the plant). When I first moved here I wasn't even sure it was still in use. I think it's really cool that they have kept it like it's been for over a hundred years and not built some ugly "modern" building - very few places in CA do that. And the C&H sign lit up at at night can't be beat! read more
