Deli Only Review: Finally got around to trying the deli for a sandwich after all these years and hearing all the good things about them. Previous attempts were met with 30-45min. wait times that a quick lunch break would never allow. This time, I got lucky with a quick in & out visit on a Friday during lunchtime. The store's an almost comical-surreal throwback to the old food co-op's from the 1970's (for all us grown folks that were part of that era). Like stepping back into a time machine. But, the wonderful smells from the deli hit me when I walked in, which was great and got the appetite juices flowing big time. A two meat cold cut sandwich w/ cheese will set you back $17 with tax. Which is about the ceiling of what I'm willing to pay currently for a similar sandwich anyplace else. Adding that 2nd meat is what kicks the price up a few more bucks. A heated sandwich request adds .50c and extra meat is another $2 on top. Truth told, most other deli's and sandwich shops have an equivalent option for slightly less $. Would be gravy if they threw in a can of generic soda pop (Shasta, Cragmont, etc?) and maybe a mini bag of chips for this pricepoint, but whatever. Not a deal breaker. Sandwich was very good and they advertise using Boarhead brand meats. It's a winner, if not an everyday lunch option. Check it. read more

An OG grocery store in the not-so glitzy town of Vallejo. The Food Basket is probably the last store that comes to mind when looking for specialty items, especially catered to southern-comfort cooking, although it should be the first. You would be surprised at everything this diamond-in-the-rough has to offer, from its own over-the-counter butcher shop to their deli, which makes the most incredible sandwiches. Their produce is not the greatest, but it is selective. They do offer items that may be harder to find at Safeway, and maybe a little cheaper. The employees are very kind and helpful towards their customers. When I cruise through the aisles, my imagination tends to run wild as I start to think about all the creative dishes I can make for the week. It's not your typical chain grocery store. It's more like a neighborhood market, but a tiny bit larger. Love this place! read more

After parking in the spot right by the entrance, two people (probably homeless) came up to my car asking for money before I even got out. Within a few steps, two more women at a fold-out table tried to get me to sign up for a "free phone"--definitely felt like a sketchy sales scam. When I left, two different people approached me looking for cash. This was midday (1PM), and honestly, the parking lot felt uncomfortable and unsafe. If the owner reads this I'd take a look at who worked your deli counter today. The order was placed online and the sandwich tags were filled out by hand by your staff. We ordered 2 turkey sandwiches. Both were on sourdough rolls despite my ordering dutch crunch for one. The bread was dry and hard, in a way that was not even "day old". There was very little meat (they must not weigh the meat?) and the pepper turkey was super dry as though it was sliced days ahead. The condiments were scare, I'll include pics. The lettuce was literally the stub you toss out and the red onion was forgotten despite it being checked off by them on the handwritten tag. Typical grocery store with deli. Went in to grab sandwiches for the crew. They were ok sandwiches but a bit pricey at $12 for what's really just a plain turkey with cheese on roll. The meats were on the thin side. Staff were friendly enough. Store was clean but dimly lit and some of the shelves were bare. A good assortment of hot sauces if that's your thing. Drinks were cheaper than at your usual convenience store. All in all not a store I would avoid but not one that I would take time to go to either. I wish they'd up their sandwich game. read more

Just ordered two sandwiches and added avocado to both I ordered the bread to be Dutch crunch. They gave me sourdough rolls. It's like they don't know what Dutch crunch is. It's even on the little slip that's with each sandwich... this is not the first time that it happened with a substitution or they just plain I didn't give a damn... $40 bucks for two sandwiches and they're both wrong. Not a good look...also just noticed they made them both the same one was supposed to be maple honey turkey and the other one was pastrami. I got two maple honey turkey sandwiches. This is just awful. Had a hankering for a pastrami sandwich on rye bread. Haven't been in the store in about a year. They have really cleaned up and organized the store better. They have the essentials: food, paper products, cleaning supplies and yes, items are slightly marked up as with any small grocer. My favorite thing about the store is the meat section. They have a variety of fresh meat that they will cut to your specifications. They offer meat packages and more! For someone like me that follows dietary laws of the Bible and avoids pork, they offer BEEF BACON! YES, I SAID IT! HARRIS RANCH BEEF BACON.
