My glasses were ground incorrectly the first time, so I took them back. They reground them, but I still could not see well through them. I was at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford for a follow up, and they asked me how my new glasses were working out. I told them I don't really use them since I can't see well with them. They checked them for me, and the prescription was way off. They gave me a printout of what the prescription was written for and what my new glasses were so I would take them back. Be aware that the lenses are ground in house and not sent to a lab. read more

This place is great! I originally bought my glasses at Costco and they talked me into getting the anti-reflective lenses. I regret that decision, as they started to scuff and wore off badly. Apparently this is an issue with cheap AR film. I took the glasses in to C&J and they did their best to get the AR film off but had trouble doing so. In the end, they hooked me up with brand new lenses for only $60 and I couldn't be happier with them. They feel like new glasses again. I'll definitely go here from now on. read more

I'm from LA and this is my goto place for frames since moving to Merced and even better selection than most places I've seen in LA. 1. This place has the best selection of quality frames hands down and very good prices and constantly updated inventory. 2. Most lenses are done in house so you can pop in one day and your frames are ready the next day. 3. They have plenty of business so they don't attack you when you walk in the door. I am not in the habit of leaving poor reviews- believing that I can always lean toward the positive. Unfortunately, the only positive that I found at C&J Optical was that they have a small children's play area. I dealt with the same sales lady twice. The first time was when I purchased a pair of sunglasses for my wife, the second was when I attempted to return them (By the way- apparently, there is no return policy. The policy is not stated on the receipt, nor is it posted anywhere in the store -that I could see with reasonable effort- and the policy was not explained when purchasing). I found the customer service to be bristly and down right cold at other points. For example, when the sales lady was asked about a particular brand, she motioned toward a section of the store and said, "they're over there," giving the impression that I needed to search on my own and that she would not be helping. Or, when asked about guarantees, replacement parts, etc., she said very curtly, "manufacturers have warranties," period. Business marketing statistics state that it takes eleven positive comments to dissuade one negative comment. I am literally in the business of helping good businesses succeed. I would like to see good businesses succeed, especially in this town, but poor customer service at a style-driven eyeglasses boutique won't bode well for long. I am a supporter of local business whenever possible (hence why I purchased from C&J's in the first place), but after the couple of sour experiences there, I would have gladly and preferably taken my business to a national chain had I been able to return the glasses. I hope to see positive reviews for C&J's- until then, I will not be returning, though I welcome feedback from the owner. read more

I spent over $400 here less than 2 years ago. I called today to ask if they could replace my lenses. The female who answered the phone was so snotty and rude that I will never spend another dime there. I also had recommended them multiple times over last couple of years and will never do that again. Nobody should be spoken to in that manner. Yes I understand it's 2:47 on Friday afternoon but you can still turn my $200 away in a kind way. In my mind that's an easy $3000-$5000 loss in revenue just from me over the next ten years, if you're able to stay in business that long. I hope it was worth it to you and I hope you. read more

I've been going to these good folks for over 20 years. I had a brief dalliance with Costco and an optometrist in Fresno, but I'm back with C and J. Yesterday, they repaired/soldered my broken eyeglasses and made a new set for me in about two hours time: since I live in a rural area and it takes me 1.5 hours to get to Merced (or Fresno), it was huge that this could be done in one trip. Also, the cost of the new eyeglasses was less than half the cost of the last set I got at the Fresno optometrist. They have always been very helpful and respectful, and I like supporting small independent businesses. read more

I have been a customer of C&J optical for over 10 years. I am not in the habit of writing reviews for anyone, good or bad. After reading the negative review from Matt S., I felt obliged to write this review, as it came as a huge surprise to me that anyone would have found this business to be less than stellar. Both of the 2 people that work in the shop have helped me on numerous occasions, and I have purchased at least 15 pairs of glasses from them over the years, not only for me, but also for several of my children. The service has been excellent, even going back to the very first occasion I had to buy glasses from them. I was referred to them by a fellow physician, my Ophthalmologist, who gave the optician there a glowing recommendation as "the best in the area." I have never received any rude or curt responses from Laura, the "sales lady" mentioned by Matt S. in his review. In fact, I try to seek her out when looking for a pair of glasses either for myself or for one of my children. She has a unique ability to narrow down the choices very quickly to match the desires and the tastes of the customer, and to match the style of frame to the physical features of the face to wear it. She starts with 2-3 simple questions and a quick analysis of the customer's features, e.g., cheek structure, eye color, hair color, clothing style, etc., and in a few minutes the choice is down to 2 or 3 final options, all of which seem near perfect. I am sure that all of my children would agree that she has been not only extremely helpful, but also very kind and friendly, and even "very beautiful." I believe that the experience Matt S. described may have been attributable to the fact that he didn't specifically ask for help. There are some places I've been where I have been asked so many times, "can I help you?" that I wish they would leave me alone. There are some where even when I want help, I can't find it. Customer service for any company has to choose where they want to place themselves between those two opposite ends of the spectrum between harrassing vs. ignoring the customer. My observation has been that C&J Optical respects the desire of most customers to first browse around and take in all the amazing variety of choices available, then to assist expertly when asked for assistance. As for the implication that the eyeglasses could not be returned, or that there was little or no warranty available, I believe that the warranties are nothing less than the industry standard, and for regular customers, they are better. The last pair of prescription Oakley sunglasses I ordered, for example, arrived at the store 2 days after I placed the order. When they gave me the standard courtesy call to inform me of the arrival of the glasses, I was informed by the optician that when he did his own quality check, he found that one of the lenses had the wrong correction, and he had sent it back to Oakley to have them correct their mistake. Both as a customer and as a physician, I would rate C&J Optical as absolutely the best place in the Merced County area to buy glasses...without a doubt! read more

I regret having to give two stars to CJ optical because my first experience was with the owner who is a friendly and courteous guy. He has the best selection of quality frames in merced and his work is high quality. Unfortunately yesterday we had to deal with his senior employee. This woman could not be bothered to get up from her chair to greet neither the customer before us, nor us after that customer left. My wife got a wave in a vague direction when she asked about women's frames. After a short, fruitless discussion about insurance coverage for prescription sunglasses she seemed eager to be rid of us and sent us on our way with with a quote and no thank you. Enter this business if you want to gamble on the owner being there. Otherwise save yourself the frustration and drive elsewere. read more

This is my second experience with C&J. I am still wearing the glasses from the last visit. I was nervous about my new job, a driving job, so I had my eyes tested and brought the prescription here again. I hate to admit I tried to go cheap by checking Costco first, but I saw no frames there that fit my perceived need & no one was free to help me. At C&J, the Optometrist came out from the back because the salesperson was busy with a customer. He talked to me about my concerns about the job and the new prescription, which was not really different from the old, and convinced me I did not need new glasses. I think most places would have happily taken my cash knowing new glasses wouldn't help with my nerves. Next time, I will go here first and tell everyone else go here to. Since he's not going to be cheap to make a buck off of me, I'm not going to be cheap and try for a discount. read more

I was referred here by Costco when I needed to change one lens in my glasses after cataract surgery. They manufactured the lens right there in an hour or two and put it into the frames I brought to them. They helped me negotiate getting Medicare-paid glasses after cataract surgery, informing me that Medicare will pay for a complete pair of glasses after each eye is done. Now I can take in my old prescription glasses to them and get new lenses (with my new post-cataract prescription) made for my favorite frames while I have lunch at the nearby Thai restaurant. I am so happy to have found this place. My eye doctor checked the glasses I had made here and was very impressed at the complete accuracy of the prescription. read more

It seems to me this business would survive on a small town like Merced, where competition and level of quality people are very low.
