It sits right on a two-lane coastal "highway," barely 1/4 mile from Lake Michigan, but would just as likely be found in some backwater Alabama swamp (not an insult, just an ambience). They have a small deli in the back and the young unassuming young guy making pizzas and other baked goods. He seemed nice, albeit so what suspicious. There was also a quintessential old farmer-type playing lottery scratch-offs by scratching off the barcode without actually playing the game on the front, then communicating with the cashier woman on a first name basis (Sarah). What a weird experience. I'm always interested in the colorful characters these tiny little towns and their stores. The pizza? Some of the best I've found south of Holland. The sauce had a hint of sweetness, and the crust had a couple of semi burnt bubbles that added to the delicious crunch of the crust. The taste may not be worthy of a five, but certainly a Midwest tiny-town-in-the-middle-of-nowhere five, and certainly worth a visit for pizza, miscellaneous baked goods... or beer, wine, and lottery.

He also called me "Ma'am," which was safe, appropriate and appreciated as I have completely white hair. There were few people in the store. I paid cash for my gas, then had to come back in for change. By that time, the clerk had a LONG line of customers, and I waited in the back. But the clerk motioned for me to come to the counter, he already had the change ready! I got my change and was out the door; the clerk didn't miss a beat, continuing on with the next customer in line. You've got a winner there, someone who is willing to go the extra mile. Do what you can to hang on to employees like that.

One of the jugs of milk I bought was curdled, so there may be occasional logistical issues, but I don't think there's any point in driving all the way to Holland like I foolishly did last year. Addendum: right after I wrote this review I had the following experience. I walked in desperately looking for croissants and asked if they had any even though there weren't any in the case. A nice lady went into the back, got three of the frozen croissants they would use to make deli sandwiches, rang them up and sold them to me ad hoc. One of her co-workers said "I didn't even know we can do that." And the nice lady replied, "we can do anything the customer wants."

They still sell candy, hot food, and convenience store items. They added things like milk, eggs, ravioli, little things if you need to just duck in and out. However, the prices are unreasonable. They just buy milk from marketplace ($2.50 a gallon) and mark it up to $4-$5 and resell it. Since they close at 7 PM now, you are better off just going up to Marketplace to get milk, eggs, or hot deli food (deli closes around 8:45). The food is still Gordon Foods products heated up in the oven, and left under a heat lamp for a few hours. I decided to get some curly fries, and regretted it right away. Limp, chewy, cold, and dry all the way through. No refund. The girl on the register was obviously in training, but was getting no help from the manager. She had to run my debit card 4 times, I did not get a receipt. I'll be keeping an eye on my bank account. Despite getting cleaned up, it's become a mess.
