Surprised how much we enjoyed this grocery store. We had stopped at Meijer in South Haven which is obviously a much larger store, but more Wal-Mart vibes there vs. the classic lake town grocery feel here. They actually had quite a bit of what we needed. Sparkling water, dinner ingredients for our AirBnb, a bottle of wine, etc. And while some prices were maybe mildly inflated, it certainly wasn't enough to notice on my end. While this is in Douglas, don't let that confuse you if you're new to vacationing in Saugatuck.. it's basically the same area. Like a few minutes from downtown Saugatuck. It's a bit dark feeling in here, but that's alright. Nice little grocery that was popping on during peak season as we enjoyed our week in Saugatuck. read more

This little grocery store really does the job if you are vacationing in Saugatuck. They have "enough" stuff -- some produce including fresh asparagus and peaches in June, meat, name-brand snacks, plenty of alcohol and drugstore stuff too. One of the jugs of milk I bought was curdled, so there may be occasional logistical issues, but I don't think there's any point in driving all the way to Holland like I foolishly did last year. Addendum: right after I wrote this review I had the following experience. I walked in desperately looking for croissants and asked if they had any even though there weren't any in the case. A nice lady went into the back, got three of the frozen croissants they would use to make deli sandwiches, rang them up and sold them to me ad hoc. One of her co-workers said "I didn't even know we can do that." And the nice lady replied, "we can do anything the customer wants." read more

Omg! I Just got back from Demonds. Under new ownership and it is SO NICE! They actually have a great variety of products! The prices are very normal. Not the overpriced stuff of old. Very neat and clean. No more stink. The staff are all replaced by people who actually care and work! I no longer feel like I have to drive to Holland. Need be I can get free delivery from Sam's Club and Walmart. Douglas is growing up! read more

We loved being able to have a grocery store for the staples, and then would travel to Holland if we needed to augment our shopping list, but now we're able to keep it entirely local. A decent liquor store, but prices, at least for wine, are significantly higher than other local sellers. Not a bad selection of groceries for a small store, but everything is priced 40% more than at any other supermarket. Also, freshness is regularly an issue both with meat (check the expiry) and veggies (check for firmness). They have a captive audience of tourists and locals who don't want to drive to Holland, but for a local who is here year round, the price gouging isn't great for me. read more

Just a terrible way to start our vacation when we stopped in to stock up. Sure the place looks a little beat up but the variety was ok for its size. And then there was the checkout curmudgeon. He was clearly annoyed by our larger basket of goods and proceeded to double scan some items. When I tried to help move things along, he got belligerent and told me not to help. I had to ask for my receipt and the had to come back to ask for a double charged item. As I was waiting I witnessed how pleasant he was being with the local customers. I politely asked for a refund was received an unprofessional, angry attitude. Next trip will be to the least convenient Saugatuck grocery store to avoid this poor experience again. read more

When I'm in a hurry and don't want to drive to South Haven or Holland, I'll pop in here for a few things. They have a decent selection of items and I can usually find what I'm looking for.. except for produce. They have a very limited produce department. I've never seen a cart of basket sanitized here, so keep that in mind. They usually just set my basket right back in the stack for the next customer to pick up. Very nice. Just what you'd expect in a small, seasonal, lake town grocery store. It's not a large superstore chain so don't expect unlimited selection of every imaginable food selection. However, for what it is, it's an excellent place to stock up on your vacationing needs. read more

We are so fortunate to have LakeVista Supervalu in town. We have owned a home here for 18-years and I can say that the improvements that have been made in the past two years have not gone unnoticed. Yes, there are times during the peak tourist times that items can be out of stock, etc... This is not a corporate supermarket, but a family owned institution. 95% of the time, I can find what I need here to prepare a meal for friends and family. Produce quality is very good with a lot of locally-grown items. Yes, prices are higher...this is not a corporate store buying in huge quantities so that they can cut prices. I love being able to shop locally for my provisions! read more

Great wine/beer/booze/soft drinks collection, and their deli chicken pot pies are second to none. Veggie section is a little thin, but generally in good condition. They also have a lot more sugar-free products that are much appreciated by family members with blood sugar issues. For those who don't have sugar issues, they carry a small case of Palazzolo ice creams, our favorite brand. I don't do weekly shopping here but it's great for the occasional trip to pick up a few needed things. read more

Three stars seems about right. This zero frills grocery reminds me of the small town groceries I grew up on in Union City, Indiana. Low ceilings, zero natural light and somewhat limited options but just enough to get the job done. This location had an ample selection of alcohol- most likely to cater to tourists. We were able to buy some necessities like milk, eggs, cheese, etc. along with a few surprise purchases like cookies and bagel chips. The parking lot is plenty large and I don't recall the prices being crazy. They offer a small deli counter and just about any other essentials you'll need during your stay. read more

Rude, Rude, Rude people. Deli was closed again at Noon on Wednesday 6/1/2022 Asked why the person behind the counter said she'd been there since early a.m. "I have a life and need to go home to my three children" Wow... I asked to speak to manager she said she can't find people to work and that this was the first time in months that this happened. I said that's not true because it also happened three week ago. Manager said "I'm not going to argue with you" and was very dismissive. I asked if any of the 3 checkout people could work back there since the store only had 10 cutomers in the whole store. Manager ignored me. I'm a year round local and I'm done with Lake Vista and I don't recommend going there. RUDE PEOPLE. read more

I believe this was the only real supermarket that we saw while in Douglas/Saugatuk. What distinguishes this place from other supermarkets is that they have service people that specifically carry your groceries to your car. I thought that was an excellent touch to the shopping experience. Most supermarkets in the big city don't do that. I think these service people are obviously trying to earn a good tip and why couldn't I think of such a novel concept? This supermarket does have everything you need. I think the prices seem to be reasonable here. It was apparent that we were not the only visitors in the Douglas/Saugatuk area. There were lots of eye candy roaming around the store so that even made it better. read more

This store does a great job given the seasonality of its demand. Workers are helpful and friendly and they have all the basics plus a few specialty things. They might consider upping their selection of foodie items in the prime summer months. Might consider renting out the deli to a speciality proprietor in the summer. From the reviews I was expecting a dollar general but this place exceeded expectations. Nice selection of alcohol, beer and wine. We needed a cloth tape measure for some reason and they had one! Grocery selection for a small resort town is decent had Boars Head deli products. read more

Given its prime location it's a mystery to me why this sad market couldn't be more than a low-rent convenience store. Granted, they saved the day (and our dinner) once when we ran out of propane, and it's a quick stop for beverages, snacks, and some prepackaged staples (check the sell-by dates). But every year we've visited Douglas it's looked a little worse, and the employees emit a vibe that feels defeated (which Deli Manager Jim's post pretty much confirmed). Until someone buys this place and turns it around, prepare to hike to Holland or Grand Haven for any serious food shopping. read more

If you are vacationing near the area, you will want to stop at a larger market unless you want sticker shock. The store shelves were almost bare in some areas and didn't carry a lot of variety. Very expensive. Save your money and shop for groceries before getting into town. read more

I was in town for the week end... and you know there is always the damn I forgot the * and the * so go to the closest and maybe only supermarket around. They also have a good selections of beer, and other alcoholic drinks to have the party going. They are well stocked and customer service is super nice. Horrible across the board. Expired food on inner aisles. Absolutely no produce. If you are lucky you will find rotten produce. Meat is gray in color. Freezer burn on frozen items. We make the drive to Holland for groceries because we have found DeMond's produce offering to be very poor. Their deli is also lacking in so many areas. The prepared food there has been disappointing. We often find lots of freezer burn on frozen items as they do not properly clean or defrost their freezers. Not enough Organic or healthy food options. Some employees there are very nice while others are rude. We avoid shopping there. How we wish for a clean, well-stocked grocery store in our area that offers fresh organic produce and healthy deli offerings. read more

After reading the reviews of Lake Vista SuperValu, we feared the worst. How surprised we were! They had everything we wanted, including a clean washroom, and the service could not have been more helpful. We were impressed that we could buy organic milk, cheese and butter! Filthy store, produce is rotten most of the time. Deli meat counter is a mess. The slicer is not cleaned between each slicing of meats. They use the meat slicer to slice cheese on it. The shelves are empty most of the time. The clerks are bad. The freezer area is malfunctioning and the food has freezer burn on it. read more

Dave was super patient and helpful throughout the process for buying beer and beverages for our welcome party and reception. My sister and her family live pretty close to Douglas so I've been here many times over the years. The selection of items in this grocery store is real good for such a small town. On my most recent visit I was needing some over the counter medicine and was surprised at the size of the selection they had available. I was only expecting maybe one third of what they actually have so it was a very pleasant surprise to actually find exactly what I needed. The best thing this store has going for it is it's employees. Over the years I've always received nothing but friendly and helpful service. I haven't personally met the owners (although I probably have at some point interacted with them and didn't realize who they were) but my sister has told me they are pretty awesome people too. Yes, it's a small town so you'll pay a little more than say at Walmart, but it's worth it to not have to drive a half hour to the nearest bigger city not to mention it's nice to support local businesses especially when they provide such good service. read more

I purchased a couple pounds of meat at De Mond's and when I got home and opened it, it smelled like rotten eggs. I was frustrated that I was sold spoiled meat. When I took it back into the store, the employees stared at me like I was so rude to break up their social hour. The cashier at the service desk never said a word to me. I explained what happened and she called for a manager over the intercom. She then proceeded to stand there with her head down and played with the bag in front of her, still not saying a word to me. She stared at me to step aside as another customer came up to purchase cigarettes. She then returned the meat and simply handed me the money without saying a word. I was never apologized to! The employees were all standing around not doing much of anything. When I got to the store to initially purchase the meat, there was at least a crowd of 10 employees standing out front smoking. This store is already priced too high, and after this horrible experience, I refuse to return. I will make the drive to Holland instead. read more
