I've eaten a fair amount of meals in Barcelona, and this is now one of my favorite restaurants and I think I'll be back every time I come back to Barcelona. If you're in town for a few days, go out of your way to come eat here, brave the line -- you may have to wait 30-60 min but it's worth it) -- and come with at least one other person so you can try a variety of things. A party of 2-6 people is probably ideal so that you can share a lot of the dishes and try a lot of things. My other top restaurant was Vinitus -- I've been there twice and that's not the last time I'll be back. They have a pretty extensive menu with lots of seafood, meats, tapas, main dishes, and desserts. Here's what we got -- we loved everything that we ordered, and I would eat the exact same dishes again if I came back because they were that good. Pan de coca con tomate (2,65 €) - Excellent pan con tomate - the bread was perfectly crusty and crunchy, just as it should be, and the tomato and olive oil were perfect on top. This is up there with Vinitus on favorite pan con tomate in Barcelona so far. Croquetas de bogavante // Lobster croquette (3,50 €, each) - A bit pricey at 3,50 € each, but worth it. I'm glad my fiancé and I both got each of our own and we didn't have to share. The inside was creamy, the outside part was perfectly deep-fried and not too greasy, and you could taste the lobster. I could have eaten 3 of these myself. Bunuelos de bacalao // Cod Fritters (2,10 €, each) - My fiancé actually liked this more than the lobster croquettes, but I liked the lobster croquettes better. They were both fabulous, you can't go wrong with either but just get both so that you can try them. The outside was also not too battered and not greasy, and the inside was tasty and not overly fishy or salty. Perfect. Octopus - One of the better octopus dishes I've had in my life. This was grilled perfectly, had a little bit of a char-grilled taste, it was really fresh so the texture was not chewy, and it was paired with a slightly spicy tomato sauce. I'd highly recommend this dish. Cochiñillo Iberico // Pork - I normally don't like pork, but this was really really good. The top was crispy skin and the meat was so tender and just fell apart with every bite. I loved this dish and would recommend it to everyone, even if you don't care for pork that much. Baston de chocolate cubano con sal (6 €) - Normally I love everything with chocolate - the dessert was good, but not mind-blowing for me. It was tasty, and well-made, and not too sweet, but compared to all the savory dishes, this was probably my least favorite of the meal. The chocolate bar/dessert was more like a ganache in texture and richer/denser, so don't expect a fluffy cake or mousse. All in all, one of my favorite meals in Barcelona. Can't wait to come back here again! Highly recommend everything that I ordered and more. The total for the 2 of us was around 65 € (we also had 2 glasses of wine) which was reasonable considering the quality of the food & seafood. The worst experience and food in our whole Europe trip. My fiancé and I came for dinner without a reservation. We were told to come back in two hours. Not a problem. We came back and it was a mess. So many people had been promised to be seated and had not been seated. The entrance of the restaurant was jammed packed. I heard the gentleman in front of me ask when they would be seated as the hostess had quoted them one hour before they could be seated. Why were we told two hours while another party was told one hour? We finally got seated after waiting another half hour. The guy who helped us was nice, but unfortunately the food was salty and/or raw. The spicy octopus was raw on one side and the steak was also very raw. I was very disappointed with the food. Quimet & Quimet Pinotxo Bar Canete Cal Pep La Xampaneria For a quick cheese tasting, Formatgeria La Seu is a must! REVIEW FOR CANETE The steak with foie gras is ridiculously, mouth-wateringly hedonistic! It's rich along the vein of Spotted Pig in the West Village. Whoever thought to put foie gras on top of steak is a freaking culinary genius!! It's definitely enough to share, but since I was traveling alone.... I got to be selfish and devour the whole thing myself. That being said, it was really rich so I had to take a break in the middle. This was my first meal in Barcelona, and it was so good that I came back for my last meal in the city. I opted for a seat at the bar, so I was seated promptly both times. Things you MUST get in this order: Tomato bread (sounds deceivingly simple, but it's so delicious) Lobster croquette Imberico ham (literally the best ham I've had in the city--they only prepare a certain amount a day so go early!) Bar Cañete was fantastic! It was recommended by our hotel concierges which are locals., so we decided to go for it. Made reservation here before even getting to Spain, as we were told it books weeks in advance. We came in early after walking and exploring all day, and since Spaniards don't eat early I expected the place to be empty but it wasn't, it was completely packed. Lots of tourists! We were seated at the bar and that was cool because you can see into the kitchen and watch the chefs work and cook. They run the restaurant like a tight ship. Their kitchen was small but mighty, everyone had a job and that assured the food came out fresh and ready. Tapas style servings so typical of Spain. Lots of Catalunyan specialties and great dishes. We ordered a ton of stuff! Dishes just kept coming out and it was love at first bite. It was all delicious!! The wine list was extensive and the red we picked was delicious. Our favorite dish were the setas con yema de huevo But the croquetas, jamón ibérico and arroz were phenomenal too The service was impeccable, the chef addressed the crowd and thanked everyone for being there. We stopped for a quick lunch as soon as Cañete opened (around 23:00). We sat at the bar, which was empty when we arrived, and packed to the brim by the time we left. The "cava de la casa" was excellent. The two of us shared Anchovies in Olive Oil, Pulpo (octopus) and Scrambled Eggs with Chorizo. We were full after the three plates, but agreed that we would be back to try everything else on the menu. This was the most disappointing meal of eight days in Spain. I did my research and read all the glowing reviews so I reserved early and expected this meal to be a high point of the trip. Instead I wish I had eaten some cup ramen from the corner supermarket. The aubergine chips were lukewarm, limp, and oily. The batter on the assorted fried seafood was heavy. The lobster croquette and stewed oxtail were not worth the price. The deboned suckling pig was a joke. It was a mash of ground pork covered with tough chewy pig skin. The best dish was the jamon, the flavor of which owed nothing to the restaurant. The entire meal of 6 tapas with water cost over 80 euros. Worst 80 euros spent on this entire trip. One if the very best gems of Barcelona, no doubt about it! It's cozy, comfortable spot with an abundant menu packed with yumminess. Must have red shrimps and pulpo! Smaller size paella was perfect. I have been there with a group for lunch and i have been there on my own (at the bar, think similar to omakase setup at a sushi restaurant) late night for munchies dinner. It was equally awesome. Picking one semi-formal restaurant to try in Barcelona can be a difficult task, some place not quite Michelin worthy but above playing musical chair with bar stools at the Boqueria. There are literally 5000 places with 4.5 stars on Yelp and even more on Tripadvisor. So many choices, so little time. Confused? Of course you are, just grab a reservation at Canete and you get to proudly stamp Barcelona on your foodie passport. The restaurant has a narrow entrance with a bar in front and a room on the side towards the back. Colorful tiles and regal bull's heads adorn the walls, while locals and tourists pack the floor underneath to imbibe on magnificent dishes and drinks. The scene here truly exemplifies the gastronomic good life in Barcelona. You walk in and instantly feel like part of the culinary "in crowd" in one of those glossy food magazines. I emailed a month ahead and got a table at prime time easily. In retrospect, eating at the bar would've added to the whole experience. Obviously almost all the dishes on the menu sound wonderful and looked even better in person. I'd gather there are probably nary a dud among them. I would not recommend the fried anchovies or the suckling pig though, while good, just too filling and not as special as everything else we tried. So, find that hidden corner in your stomach and point at four things on the menu for each of you!! read more

This was my favorite place in Barcelona. It's casual but with classy old-school ambiance and friendly energy. I sat at the bar where I had pole position for all the goodness. I read the menu and had trouble deciding what to NOT order. Good news is is since this is a tapas place, I was able to order every dish my little American heart desired. I ordered the sherry anchovies, 1/2 portion of bellota ham, ham croquette, squid sandwich, #3 oyster, beef tartare+fries, (yes I'm still going), suckling pig, and gazpacho. I can't recall which white wine they recommended, but it was very inexpensive and incredibly complementary to the food. I loved the ham and anchovies, but what I really wanted to order two of was the squid sandwich. The squid was tender, the aioli was savory, and the arugula and citrus cut the oil of the sammie. Canete was recommended to us by a local who accurately noted it was a nice mix of locals and tourists. It was a little pricey (expect about 40 Euro per person for a decent meal) but the quality of food was high. I recommend making a reservation if you can, but you can always walk in and sit at the bar which is fun. We really enjoyed the donut (ours was stuffed with crab), garlic shrimp, and scallops with bacon. Only real disappointment was the sardine dish, croquette was good but nothing standout. Highly recommend coming back, if you're a fan of foi gras that seemed to be the most popular dish. Definitely recommend checking this place out, esp as it's conveniently located off La Ramblas and close by to the boqueta. read more

I really don't know why the rating is so high for the place. It's very expensive and slow service. The waiters are running into each other because there are so many of them and number of them were standing in front of us, the service was still slow. One customer sitting next to me couldn't get a menu even after waiting 10 minutes, so gave him mine. The food was mediocre and extremely salty. This place must only cater to American and British tourists and make every dish salty to their taste. I did not notice a single Catalan or Spanish customers. The original plan for our last night in Barcelona was to have dinner again at Quimet & Quimet but when we got there, it was inexplicably closed. We didn't want to venture too far so after doing a quick search, we settled on Cañete which was just a few minutes away from our hotel. The staff at Cañete are fun. The guys who were serving us from behind the counter were totally hamming it up and their good cheer and the overall laid back vibe of the place made us happy to be there. The fact that the food was excellent also helped. We dined on Pan Amb Tomaquet (Bread rubbed with Tomatoes), TunaTartare (theirs was an exceptionally tasty preparation with pristine cubes of fish served on top of a creamy whipped cheese mixture), Croqutes de Jamon Iberico (the best ones we tasted during our trip), Gambas (shrimp baked whole in salt), Llangueta with Eggs (battered and deep fried small fish with an over easy egg on top- I didn't particularly like the texture of this dish), Secreto de Lomo (thinly sliced pork with mashed potatoes- tasty and comforting), and Pesols de Llavaneres Amb Buti Negra (Blood Sausage with Fresh Peas- as good as this was, I would not recommend it for the price tag of €30) all washed down with glasses of Cava. As a whole, the quality of the food is fresh, the interior sleek yet inviting, and service is top notch. With this in mind it's a given that the cost of dining will be a bit steeper but it was a great meal and well worth it. Just a note- apparently they also do a great Steak and Foie Gras but since we had already indulged at Vaso de Oro (at probably a much lower price) we declined an order though it did look and smell really good when we saw it going out to other customers. read more

The truffle sauce was lightly applied as not to over power the flavor of the steak or the foie gra. * Cuban chocolate bar - this dessert is made of 72% cacao and it was divine! Beautifully presented on a red plate. Love the attention to detail. There was a yummy piece of caramel popcorn on the chocolate bar served chocolate ice cream and drizzled with chocolate. Cañete was another highlight of my trip to Barcelona and I would surely put it on your must go list. I came in early in the evening on a Monday and there were 2 seats open at the bar. This restaurant is primarily a gorgeous bar encompassing a lively open kitchen. There is some tables on the side but the bar is where the action is. Our waiter/bartender, as they seemed to share roles and was truly both, was get to make recommendations on the food as well as their stellar wine list. I tried this orange dessert wine called Par that was outstanding. The theme of Cañete is making traditional tapas dishes outstanding. You won't find too many variations of classic dishes, only classics that are perfectly executed. Tomato Bread - Toasted bread with a coating of tomatoes, yes they have it everywhere but it was especially good here Tuna Tartar - A dish that is done everywhere may have been perfected here. It came topped with crunchy onions and a side of salmon roe on top of a cream cheese. Truly outstanding. The waiter was correct when he bragged about it being the best tuna tartar ever. Ham and cheese croquettes - Another dish that is done everywhere else in Spain but is especially good here. They were crunchy and crisp on the outside and savory ham and cheese on the inside. Garlic Shrimp - Shrimp in a garlic and oil. I found the shrimp tasted different than the ones I have had in the eastern US. Just slightly sweeter than I am used to. Another excellent dish Fried eggs with Galican Chorizo - This dish is essentially a lightly fried poached egg over french fries and chorizo. The chorizo added some amazing flavors of savory salty meat to the fresh potatoes and egg. The Cheesecake w/ Pear - The cheese they use as a base was what made this dessert shine. It was less sweet but more flavorful than cheesecakes I have had in the states. You could actually pick up on the fresh cheese as opposed to just sugar. Chocolate Mousse - The mousse sits on top of a small biscuit and it encompasses caramelized bananas while covered in a soft chocolate ganache. It was also topped with edible gold flakes for good measure. This was far from a boring chocolate dessert, this tasted great and the combination worked perfectly. read more

There are a few bar stools at the door, order a bottle of wine and get comfy. There's usually a 1 hr+ wait for a seat, but place your name on the list with the host even if it's 5 hours. You wait on the street or roost on a light pole if you have to. If it is a hurricane outside you wait. Sooo worth every second of aching feet and dodging taxi drivers by the front door. After 2 weeks in Barcelona and dining at countless other restaurants, I declare this the best food and atmosphere in the city. We came here after seeing the place listed on an Eater list for best restaurants in Barcelona and it definitely lived up to the hype. We made a reservation over a month in advance, which is advised. On Monday at 7:30pm, it was packed. Cafe Canete uses such quality ingredients and it was apparent in each dish. Our favorites were the Beef Tartare (comes with fries and crostini) and the Spectacular Deboned Suckling Iberian Pig (super tender and falls right off the bone). The Tender Octopus is cooked so wonderfully and the Paella shouldn't be missed either (albeit non-traditional). Soup with meatballs has very nice tasting broth and the anchovies on toast was good too if you like fried anchovy. The only dish that we thought was slightly bland was the fried artichokes. Everything here is worth ordering once. Do yourself a favor and book a night at Cafe Canete. It will be the best meal you have in Barcelona. read more
