This is one of the most enthusiastic five-star reviews I have ever given. Everything about the 2 meals we had at Cañete during our 4-day stay in Barcelona was perfection.
The first impressions you get upon entering the restaurant are 1) the gorgeous design of the space, and 2) the impeccable service. Both times we dined at the restaurant, we arrived around 15:00 local time - a bit late for lunch, but perfect for dining without crowds. The servers were so attentive and entertaining - the best combination! You could really tell that all of them love working there, because of the excellent service they provided and how much they were talking and laughing with each other while serving. I think they need to star in their own Pedro Almodovar comedy.
Then, the food. Oh, the food. Both times we went to Cañete were two of the most delicious, memorable meals we have ever had, and paired with excellent wine. Here are the things we ordered, combined across our visits:
-jamón ibérico: a must-have, worth every penny. We ordered a large portion and it was the right choice.
-buñuelos - like chorizo corn dogs. Addictively good. I could scarf them down like popcorn. Very difficult to not keep ordering them and save room for other dishes!
-pan con tomate: a classic, so simple, the best we had in Barcelona. Drizzled with very high quality olive oil.
-anchovies: also served in the same insanely delicious olive oil. I'm not even an anchovy person but these converted me. The flavor was so fresh and delicate, the perfect amount of saltiness.
-the cannelloni, which is a specialty of theirs - served with the silkiest foie gras bechamel sauce, a very rich dish where we really savored each bite.
-Iberian delight: pork belly, fresh fish, and calçots which are blackened green onions. The most visually beautiful dish of our trip. Gorgeous color and texture, and wonderful layers of taste.
For dessert:
-apple tart: our favorite, topped with flambéed sugar and what tasted like orange liqueur-flavored ice cream. Lovely.
-flan: decorated beautifully around the edges with modern-looking, geometric shavings of chocolate.
-dessert wine: we asked what the options were for dessert wines like port, etc. and they brought us tastes of 4 different options, all of which were phenomenal, but we especially loved the Edetària Dolç and another that tasted like orange, the Par Vino Naranja. I wish I could order some, but I can't find any in the US.
Most of the staff also spoke quite good English. And when they could tell we were from the US, they weren't snooty about it but offered immediately to get us some English menus, which we appreciated. The whole experience was just lovely, from start to finish, lingering and taking our time enjoying the dishes while talking with people sitting to either side of us and watching the action in the kitchen.
Whenever we come back to Barcelona, I know what our first stop will always be! This place. read more
