When was the last time you had a fine dining experience that you could walk away from from under $300? Probably never. I think the mainstay of a great place to eat is the staff and the Cabin at Hockley Valley leaves nothing to be desired. Our Favorite server their is Raj, ask to sit in his section, he's just the very best at what he does. The food....what can I say, I proposed to my wife in Cabins dining room because it's her favorite place to eat in the whole of Dufferin. Handmade cheeses and Saluki, pickled veg and Italian mainstays reimagined. Inspired seafood and fresh pasta. I have never been disappointed with a single cocktail, app, entre or desert I've ordered, and I have eaten the entire menu....twice. Do yourself a favor and order a kitchen tasting (or two), always made fresh on the fly and always amazing. The barrel aged Negroni is always a great choice. I love the Babbo/Cabin Caesar. Handmade bacon vodka, house made rimmer and candied bacon topper make it one of the best Ceasars I've ever had. Do yourself a favor and eat at the Cabin. read more

I wanted to come here and we finally made it up north this summer!! The place appeared smaller than I imagined. The Cabin Restaurant had seating inside and outside along the pool. It would be nice to be outside, but I was scared of bugs. So we opted for a/c. Happy: My chicken sandwich was filling and crispy(the bread part)! The breast chicken was not dried and they gave me more pieces than needed. It was spread out with avocado, tomato and lettuce. Indeed there was a sauce which I don't remember. It came with a small bucket of fries which was hot but at the end, I wanted more!! The food was set on a wooden board for a rustic feel. They could improve on their hot sauce. My partner ordered their signature burger with fries and it didn't disappoint. He said it was one of the best burger he had!! Now that's a compliment. The service was good as we had different people serving us or clearing the table. If I had room, I would have tried out a dessert. Verdict: It's a nice place to come and enjoy a couple of hours outside of the city. I would come back to try their dinner menu or for a special event. read more

One of the more peculiar meals I've had in a long time. Started with dodging a meat slicer on the way in - is table side meat slicing now a thing? Once seated and questioning our server, the vegetarian option was described as being a "variety of tastes and textures prepared by the chef". When pressed for more detail, were told it was prepared on demand by the chef and always different - no further description available - "good if you like surprises'". That's like having a carnivore special - the chef will decide what meat and how it is prepared when your order is placed. Really? After we had placed our orders noticed a chalkboard near the kitchen advertising feature items. Would have been nice to know that before we ordered. When questioned about wine selections the server indicated she didn't drink wine (too young?) but there were sweet and not sweet options. Huh? Beyond that not a lot of recommendations other than pushing the house Adamo winery which did not appear to have any VQA options. A nice selection of breads arrived but with an odd bland bean dip accompaniment - we asked for butter. The mains arrived. We were all shocked by the neon green risotto accompanied by two scallops. Apparently the colour was from the Tuscan kale crema but the colour was shocking. For $27 an extra scallop or two would have been nice. The trout was okay but nothing out of the ordinary. The striploin steak was nicely cooked but heavily over salted and the fingerling potatoes consisted of two quarter sized potato pieces. The most disappointing was the gnocchi with braised beef ribs and mushrooms. It looked delicious but was so heavily over salted as to be almost inedible. On to the meat slicing show! Not sure what was going on but a staff member came out and began slicing meat on the massive meat slicer located beside our table. Maybe they have no room in the kitchen for this monstrosity but watching the staff person slicing meat and handling it with ungloved hands made us wonder about the level of food safety in the kitchen. The finale was the staff member coming out with a bucket and swabbing down the slicer. Dessert? No thank you. Overall a disappointing experience. Our expectations were much greater than what appeared on the table. Uninformed staff and a heavy hand with the salt didn't help. read more

Found this place to be just okay. My wife and I had the steak and was cooked to medium as asked but there was a tough rind around every slice which took the enjoyment and a good portion of meat out of the equation. The appetizer meat tray had some good items on it. They did not bring my wife's dessert or drink that she ordered. For the price I have had allot better steak. This place is worth a try but was nothing special to me. read more

Service is good. They obviously made an effort to train staff in food service but don't agree with their approach. I don't need to be on a first name basis with my server. We're not friends, you are serving. My idea of an ideal dining experience includes service staff that are unnoticeable and efficient. Also. I really hate when the server asks if I'm still "working" on my food. I'm not "working' I'm "enjoying'. And it's your job to notice when I'm done. Sorry, I know this doesn't matter to you. In two words: f**king exceptional. This restaurant is worthy of being a food destination. Just an hour outside of Toronto, the dishes are impeccably prepared, with nearly all produce coming from the gardens on the grounds, and the meat and fish from local suppliers (local as in...WITHIN the neighboring counties...forget this "100 mile diet" stuff...how about 5 miles?). You could taste the freshness of the greens and tomatoes in our starter salads. The lamb shank was so fresh and tender I could hardly believe my taste buds. It was served on top of blanched swiss chard (from the garden, obviously) and a gorgeous mint potato. Wow!!! My date loved his halibut (I did too). We were stuffed beyond compare after our mains, but our stomachs magically opened up when we tasted the two desserts we ordered. The best apple pie of my life, a la mode, was made from scratch. My date never orders desserts and couldn't stop gobbling it. The lemon meringue tart with preserved raspberries was excellent. I'm all about the food. But the ambiance is wonderful (gorgeous "throne-like" chairs, candles, a modern fireplace), and the service friendly and on the ball but unpretentious. Prices are that of a fine dining resto - as they should be - but Cabin presents more value than comparable alternatives in the city. The only slip-up? My date ordered a vodka soda, which came with tonic, and upon sending it back, received another vodka tonic. Oops! Maybe there's no soda in this serene setting. Who cares. I'm still on a high from this meal and its serene setting - 2 days later. read more

One of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I've had. Linguine was overcooked in only white wine with no other flavors. Vegetarian pasta was hard, and accompanied by four other vegetarian sides that were unremarkable. Bread at the beginning of the meal was good, but accompanied by a strange green sauce and we weren't told what it was. Additionally, we were told that only a 6:30 seating was available, but upon arrival and during the duration of our whole meal, there were no other guests besides one other table of two. The decor was gaudy, and the experience overall did not match the prices of the food. read more

Cabin is a chic and modern restaurant located at the Hockley Valley Golf and Ski Resort. Serving gourmet fare, Cabin sources local produce and fresh meat and fish. I enjoyed a delectable feast consisting of multiple courses. To start, I had the asparagus salad with beets and greens. The divine cheese ravioli with fiddleheads, ramps, peas, asparagus and crema provided excellent combinations of textures and tastes. The main course was a juicy and flavourful beef tenderloin accompanied with mushrooms, bacon and rapini. Great atmosphere, food and service! Highly recommend. We made a rsvp but arrived too early so the server suggested that we have a drink in the bar and he will let us know when our table was ready. The bar was across from the restaurants and the decor is modern and elegant. My friend order an apple cider sangria( ~$11) and I ordered a GT (~$7). The GT was alright but the apple cider sangria was great. The server kindly let us know our table was ready and promptly guided us. She offered to take our jackets as well. We weren't too hungry so we decided to get the charcuterie board (~$36). The presentation was phenomenal and staff explained to us what was on the board and it was delicious. The apps and entrees and wine list are probably closer to 5 star but the desserts are kind of lackluster and dont live up to the mains. Great portions and the foccaia bread to start and palate cleansing sorbet are nice. Be sure to inquire about all specials as they aren't always good at sharing them. Had wonderful wine selection each time (didn't try the by the glass options). Cocktails were good each night as well. Had Raj as our server Friday he was outstanding attentive but not intrusive. read more

Our second time here. This time for Mother's Day and the brunch menu. Just as good as the first time we came. Top quality across the board. Everything made in house or locally. Can't wait to come back. Not 5 stars because the charged $21 for my 8 year old's spaghetti and sauce. Oh well. Back again a third time for an end of summer blowout. Simply stellar across the board. Can still only give four stars because this time as we were seated the maitre'd told us that there were reservations after us and to not take too long. What?!?
