My husband and I were here visiting. This was recommended to us by three different people separately, so we decided to stop in on our last evening in Virginia and try it. We were seated pretty quickly after walking in. It's a very casual place and there was a bar with seating inside and out. But we were seated in somewhat of a patio area, not inside or outside. The hostess closed the shades for us because the sun was beaming in bright. Our server was nice and was a Virginia Tech student. We told him it was our first time there and asked him what he might recommend. He said to stick to the signature tacos and specific sides. He also brought us chips and salsa which was a good starter. I got the bang bang shrimp tacos and jalapeño cheddar mashers. It was all delicious. My husband got the honey soy salmon tacos and fried plantains. He really liked it. The only thing is that the plantains were not fired as we expected and weee more like the usual sweet plantains. All in all still delicious. I'd definitely want to visit here again. They were playing island music so when I hear island music I think I'm going to get some food with some flavor, some soul, a little spice! None of it had any flavor or seasoning. If you want real mexican american food go elsewhere. EL Grande Rodeo, Rocas, Alejandro's anywhere but here. If you enjoy bland food, knock yourself out. This is your place. I thought hard about this review because the manager did allow me to escape paying for crap food.. but I just have to say it: this food is great for children of any age because it is flavorless and lackluster. I got the blackened mahi-mahi fish tacos, which were fine but the fish was a little overcooked. My fish could have been a little more tender, is what I'm saying to you. Most of the tacos come with cabbage, tomato, guacamole, cheese and white sauce. You can pick from flour tortillas or corn tortillas. (I picked corn tortillas, because of course.) Chips and pico de gallo are brought out to start, and the chips are dynamite. They are the type of tortilla chips that are warm and thin and crispy and hard to stop eating! I visited this restaurant with a group of people, so we got a bunch of the appetizers, beyond the chips and salsa. We got the guacamole (yum!) as well as the Baja shrimp & crab dip (so good, and served with pita bread), and the queso dip, which is just melted cheese, so you know it's really good. Cabo Fish Taco is known for their margaritas, though. This restaurant has one of the largest tequila menus in the state of Virginia! You can find 13 or more specialty margaritas on the menu, so there's something for every margarita lover. I got The Perfect Wave, which is a blend of their tequila, Cointreau and Grand Marnier. I have had Cabo Fish Taco multiple times but I think the quality may have gone down over the years. Last time I went everything tasted like everything needed more seasoning. The rice and beans was very lack luster and they even threw in corn on top which I didn't even realize it was supposed to have. Service was sort of fast through so I'll give it that. I would give 0 stars is that was an option. it was just terrible customer service all around. We called ahead and asked to make reservations but were told that they did not make reservations. At the same time there were also other couples in our group who were going to meet us there. They tried to make reservations but were also told that they did not make reservations. We told them that we would be coming as a group. They said we could come and if they had room they would accommodate us. So we showed up and they had an upper room where they seated us. We were told we could go up stairs because they did not have any room downstairs. We went upstairs and we ordered drinks and appetizers and they were delivered. Some of our group had actually ordered their main course. We had been there about 30 minutes when a Lady came up stairs and told us we had to leave, because another group had RESERVATIONS for that space. We found out that a person in the other group was friend of the manager of that restaurant. So they could NOT make us reservations but they could make them for the other group. We were told we could wait outside and they would seat us one table at a time, but we knew that would take too long, or we could be seated outside on the deck where it was 110 degrees outside. They herded us out like we had done something wrong. We were very embarrassed needless to say. They were very vocal when they were telling us to leave. We were coming down the stairs and they were saying to move along because we were crowding the entrance. The other group was also at the door but nothing was said to them. We had little kids with us and they could not understand why they had to leave because they had not gotten their food yet. I would advise anyone to try to make reservations because there may be a friend of the manager who wants to come to that restaurant and you may be asked to leave. Even though Cabo Fish Taco is several hours away from our place (please come to NOVA!), we are definitely bookmarking the restaurant to return. We wanted to find some good food during our road trip, so we stopped in for some fish tacos. We were able to find a spot in the dedicated lot, but it does fill up quickly during mealtime. We checked in at the front stand, and they gave us the choice of dining indoors or outside. Since it was a beautiful day, we decided the covered patio would be a good choice. Our waitress was very friendly and welcomed us with house chips and salsa. She gave us great recommendations as we looked over our options. I ordered the honey soy glaze salmon tacos, and my husband ordered the special of the day--a buffalo ranch chicken. When he noted that he liked spicy food (and wanted his face "burned off"), she said that wouldn't be a problem, and he could get extra jalapeños on his side of mashed potatoes. When we got our meals, she also brought out a small dish of a red sauce for him, saying it was the stuff the chefs kept in the back for themselves when they wanted a nice kick with their meals. My salmon tacos were absolutely delicious. I loved the balance of the wasabi and honey, and the salmon was very tender. My husband loved sweating through the pain of the bonus hot sauce and jalapeños. It was the perfect lunch spot as we continued on with our travels. There's plenty of indoor seating, and I noticed they've added more outdoor seating, which is a nice touch. We started with chips and corn salsa, which I've always loved. They tasted just as good as I remembered, though the portion size was noticeably smaller than it used to be. We also ordered the guacamole appetizer for the table. I went for the Epic Tuna Burrito, deconstructed without the tortilla, and added a side of Baja Rice. The food came out quickly, but the portion sizes were disappointing, especially for the price. Everything tasted fine, but nothing really stood out. The tuna was okay, not super fresh or flavorful, and the rice was a miss for me. The mango on top wasn't ripe, so the whole side tasted overly sour. Unfortunately, our service wasn't great either. Our server didn't check in with us, and we had to ask other staff for drink refills and more chips. All these years Cabo had me charmed, always my favorite restaurant in town and a place I always took my mom when she was in town. This last visit broke the spell- Cabo was either having a bad night or was not as good as it once was. The first thing that threw me off was that there were lines for other Blacksburg restaurants but the wait at Cabo wasn't that long (when had that ever happened). It appeared they were understaffed too with no real bartender so the waiter was the bartender too (only ordered one drink cause he never came back second part of the meal). Food wise- chips were tasteless (cardboard like) but salsa was still ok. The Mahi tacos I always was obsessed with tasted really fishy. The chicken tacos were extremely dry like the chicken felt like it had burnt ever ounce of moisture out of it. The guacamole salad I've been dreaming about for years didn't taste like guacamole- it tasted like mayo and have almost no flavor. Came by the night of the Christmas parade with 7 people, and had no problem getting seated without a reservation. They have a great drink menu - shoutout the El Cheapo - that we all took advantage of. I ended up going with some sort of lemon fish taco (forgot the name, sorry), and they were really good. What really stuck out to me was the shell itself - a lot of tacos that I've had have had really soggy/tough shells that ruin the whole experience. The New River Valley consists of Montgomery County, in which the towns of Blacksburg (where Virginia Tech is located) and Christiansburg are located. Cabo is located in the downtown district of Blacksburg, in the exact same location where the now defunct South Main Cafe was located. Cabo has a nicely decorated exterior and a pretty interior, which consists of a moderately sized two level indoor seating area and a moderately sized outdoor seating area. There is also a small sized bar. Customer service is excellent and my bartender did an outstanding job refilling my drinks. The food quality is fairly good as well. Although I miss the old South Main Cafe, this restaurant has done an excellent job of replacing it. read more

Great lunch experience! Almost as soon as we were seated, we were brought a basket of chips and a dish piled high with salsa. We couldn't stop eating it! So delicious! I had a seasonal margarita (apple cider ) and my husband had a traditional margarita--also fabulous. I ordered the lemon grilled shrimp tacos. They were SO good. I don't think any other shrimp tacos will ever match how good these were! My husband had the guacamole salmon salad and that was also delicious. Our waitress was friendly and helped us with some plans for dinner which we really appreciated :) I will definitely return here. I now understand why there is usually a line to get in! A lot of people seem to like this place, but my experience was mixed. I went during restaurant week in Blacksburg because they were running specials. I had two beef soft tacos and a small house margarita. The food was good, and the drink was fine. I decided to have another drink, a larger one and I got their most expensive margarita, the Silver Surfer, without being asked. I didn't know until I saw my bill. The great reviews are astounding. These were truly some of the worst tacos we've ever had, if not the worst. The batter they used for frying was SWEET, which was absolutely disgusting. Tacos shouldn't taste like donuts. Ew. We got a side of chips and salsa, and the chips were inedible with how salty they were. There were salt flakes falling off the chips like dandruff. The salsa was the most boring, bland pico imaginable, a complete 180 from the bizarre, confusing flavors in everything else we ate. It's shocking how much they were capable of ruining. We chose Cabo Fish Taco night before leaving our freshman at VT this fall. All of us were little sentimental and chose the place as it is the favorite food of our freshman ... I am glad that we did as the first thing that brought smile on our place was a short walk from campus and the server .. Review from 2017 Came with my friend when I visited Blacksburg in 2017. This is a very popular spot for Virginia Tech students. It was busy in during the summer. They started us off with some chips which were nice and crispy. They are the thicker tortilla type though. I got the shrimp tacos. They came very filled, which I was happy to see. It also came with a bean soup, which I didn't particularly like. Though I generally don't like bean soup anyways. Portion size is good for the price. The tacos here are amazing. Had the blackened mahi mahi, soy honey glazed salmon, carne, and fried cod. Cod was ok, but the others were definitely great and would get again. I would love to try the others next time. The do have great chips and a tomato and corn salsa. Was definitely interesting. One would expect a place like this to have homemade guacamole, but they present frozen or bagged guacamole with diced tomato and onion to make it seem fresh. (Save yourself the $9.) Our tacos were just ok. I ordered the Carne and the whitefish. The steak was better, but I think maybe someone forgot to put the fish in the batter because there was only really breading. I loved Cabo fish taco when I was in undergrad and visited recently as an alum. We ordered drinks and tacos. The salsa with corn was just as great as I remember. I also ordered two mojitos. My first one was excellent but my second one was not mixed as well. For food, my go-to has always been the tuna tavarua tacos. These were good but the wasabi was so heavy it was a little uncomfortable to eat. Normally this isn't the case but I guess this particular night, I was unlucky. Service was good and quick.
