This place is highly overrated. I dropped my daughter off to Virginia Tech and came here for dinner. When I saw the complimentary chips and corn, I realized that this joint wasn't legitimate. Love Cabo fish taco, one of the best in downtown Blacksburg. First choice to take visitors when they come to town. We went on taco Tuesday... not worth any pictures :) Drinks - I ordered the perfect wave (margarita) The server asked if I wanted the single or double. I prefer it to be strong/flavorful but I don't want a jumbo. He said they could do a double in the regular size. I said that sounds good! The drink was very weak... like juice and he charged me $24!!!!!! For an appetizer we ordered the "house made" guac and chips. It was definitely NOT house made. It tasted like the packaged guac you buy in a grocery store only to never buy again because it's terrible and tastes like puréed baby food with too many preservatives. They did add peppers and onions to the top to make it less obvious, but it was still a far cry from homemade guac! I just graduated this past May from VT so I've pretty much tried everything in my four years living in Blacksburg and I have to say Cabo is the best restaurant in Blacksburg. The service is always great, the atmosphere is great (I recommend sitting outside if it's nice out!), and the food is to die for. My favorite dishes are the tavura tuna tacos (probably butchered the spelling there) and the banging baja tacos. However, you really can't go wrong with any of their specialty tacos. Terrible food, terrible restaurant! Even when I adjust my score for Blacksburg, I hate this place. Folks who like it here have probably never had a real fish taco before. The food reminds me of my undergrad dining hall version of fish tacos, and that was actually much better (it might've helped I'm from California). This place is too pricey for what it is, and it's not a lot. I hate to contradict a bunch of amazing reviews, but did not have a good experience at all. The margaritas were very bland. The guacamole did not taste fresh at all. The mahi tacos were quite fishy. My husband ordered a second drink when the food arrived and it never came. The server never checked on us after someone else brought our food. I was so excited to go here because I love Mexican food and the reviews were stellar. I really wanted to love it and was simply very disappointed. If you haven't been to Cabo Fish Taco, do yourself a favor and pay them a visit if you're ever in Blacksburg!! This is hands down the best restaurant in Blacksburg!! I live in Miami now and I constantly crave Cabo. Whenever I'm back in town this is the first place I visit. It's that good. To start, every table gets complimentary chips and chunky salsa. The chunky salsa is some mix of tomatoes, jalapenos, corn and cilantro- fantastic way to start the meal. For your main meal you HAVE to try their tacos. Any of them. They're all good. My favorites are the lemon grilled shrimp or the calamari. You get to choose 1 side with your tacos and I always opt for the guacamole pasta salad- it's amazing. Their margaritas are also quite good! For those on a budget they have the "El Cheapo" or "Workmans" margaritas that are under $5. Finally, the ambiance is fantastic. The building was constructed in 1848 and was originally a church. The decor is interesting and the staff is always super friendly. Make sure to try this place if you're ever in the area- you won't regret it!! read more

Cabo has an extensive list of margaritas that are all super yummy! It's worth going here just for that fact. Besides the yummy (and strong) drinks they make, Cabo also makes some super delicious food. Their fish tacos are great (imagine that). But I strongly recommend the Sweet Blackened Tuna salad. The tuna was seared to perfection and topped with an apple raisin chutney and the greens were both fresh and refreshing. Cabo's website says it was created with the "idea of combining coastal Mexican cuisine with a healthy California feel". I think they accomplish this. The food is stellar. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed. You can sit inside, in a sort of veranda, or outside. I suggest outside. regardless of where you sit, it's always a good time at Cabo. Just be prepared that if you like frozen margaritas, that'll cost you an extra clam or two. read more

Regular margarita was just right, not too sweet. Service was nice but a bit spotty. Give me a chance! The food here is great. Probably the best Baja-style Mexican food in the county. Even the drinks are adequate. The problem is the service. Cabo Fish Taco, over and over again, has the slowest service in town. It doesn't matter how many people are being served, do not expect more than two drinks per three-hour meal. I have been here over seven times in the past 18 months, due to the food, but we always leave frustrated due to the poor service. If you want to have a one drink, one menu item, lunch meal, this is a great way to spend your lunch hour. If you want to even add a water to your bill, however, be sure you have an additional 45 minutes to spare. The staff are friendly, just not forward-thinking. The building facilities are not that clean or accessible. Cabo Fish Taco knows that they have caught their corner of the market, and are doing nothing to exceed the expectation. Prices are on the upper end for Blacksburg (so well below other towns), but are appropriate, considering the high-quality of the food. 5 stars if I were only rating the quality of food/drink. 1 star if I rate any other category beside food/drink. I now only visit when I have people from out of town, who may of heard of this establishment. No other place in town can beat their taco, but if you want anything else, visit one of the many other Mexican choices in the local area. read more

I used to work in the kitchen here, so I'm a bit biased in my opinion. I think the menu is great - it's SoCal-influenced fare (NOT Mexican) and is unlike anything you can find in Blacksburg or anywhere nearby. The fish tacos are delicious, especially the BBQ Mahi tacos, as are the tuna stacks and most of the burritos (Wasabi Tuna was my favorite while I was there). There's only one caveat to the food, I think: it depends on who prepares your food. This is probably true with any restaurant in a college town, but I've had some very good food here, and some food that really let me down, and I can always tell when it's someone who likes to cook and does it well, versus some schmuck just trying to make a dollar and doesn't care about the end product. The usual giveaway: the temperature and consistency of the taco shell. It should be warm and crispy, yet pliable. As far as the bar is concerned, you'll probably end up drinking with a number of regulars/locals/employees. Cabo has the best margaritas in the area, quality-wise (El Rodeo will give you the best bang for your buck with the Texas Jumbo Margarita), and if tequila is your thing, you'll be right at home. Cabo offers every tequila available through the ABC in Virginia; last time I checked, that was 72 different tequilas. If you finish them all (over time), you'll get your name on a plaque, and maybe even a t-shirt or something. Parking can be a pain in the ass, but there is a parking garage over in Kent Square if you need a spot. You run the risk of being towed if you park at the Bookstore across the street. All in all, Cabo's definitely a nice change of pace from the normal Blacksburg restaurant and bar. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. read more

Such a classic spot for Blacksburg. When I look back on my years in Blacksburg, Cabo will always have a special spot in my heart that I will miss. All of the tacos on the menu are made fresh and are absolutely delicious. The beer battered white fish tacos have such a great batter and the cilantro white sauce is so delicious with the flavorful fish and the crunchy slaw. I love the seasonal sides they offer too! Oh, Cabo - one of my go-to spots when I was living in Blacksburg. Reasonably priced food (especially for a college kid) that's unique in its own right among the other dining establishments in Blacksburg. I'm a fan of the BBQ/blackened mahi-mahi tacos and the beer-battered fish tacos (you get two tacos per order but keep in mind that you can order two different tacos!); the shrimp and chicken burrito is also a good choice. They'll start you off with a delicious corn/tomato salsa with crispy tortilla chips (I miss that so much!) and their margaritas are pretty solid. Service is very friendly and casual (as it should be for a beach-ish shack in the middle of downtown Blacksburg). They have indoor and outdoor seating as well as a pool table upstairs. MOOD: Nice area in downtown Blacksburg, the patio seating was full on this beautiful evening but the atrium was also a nice place. Lot was small and full, had to find parking on a nearby street. Very casual, with a somewhat bar-like atmosphere. The menus were very worn out. SERVICE: Waitress had too much presence, but things were delivered timely and correctly. FOOD: The free chips and "salsa" was not good. The chips tasted bland and stale, while the salsa was just corn and chopped roma tomatoes that were cold like they were just taken out of the fridge, I would have been happier with a jar of store salsa and a bag of tortilla chips. Entree was the blackened mahi-mahi fish taco with the original caborita. The margarita was sub-par, they had a lot of other choices but I went with a medium one. I can mix a better one myself at home with store margarita mix. The fish taco was decent, a nice amount of zing to it from the spices, but overall had a colder mouthfeel to it. It was about as much as I could expect from seafood in landlocked Blacksburg, VA. There aren't too many decent places to eat in Blacksburg, but it has about the same quality as a chain store where it should excel. College students give it more praise than it deserves. read more

I don't understand why this place has 4 stars. I guess these reviwers drank gasoline or something beforehand. The corn and salsa dip can easily be made at home and is at best mediocre. The chips were great. The fish tacos I had (tuna /tuna) were like puke being stuffed into my mouth. Yes, I scarfed them down but not because they were good. I was afraid if I took a second to really taste what I was eating I would puke it back up. The service, on the other hand, was great. That was the main reason why I didn't complain. I really enjoyed my dinner at Cabo Fish Taco. I wish this place was around back when I was a Hokie! Cabo's reviews on Yelp were a mixed back, lots of 3/4 stars with the occasional 2 star thrown in there. I have to say that we had a great dinning experience there. I knocked off one star for two minor issues. The frozen margarita that we got could have been a little tastier (but was loaded with booze) and the corn salsa was kind of weak. Oh, and we found that everything needed a few shakes from the salt shaker - which might be good for some of you low sodium people. The food was awesome though. I got two tacos and mixed it up a little bit by getting one bbq mahi and one garlic buffalo shrimp. The fish/shrimp tasted fresh fresh and the sauces were flavorful. The jalepeno mashers live up to their reputation. My fiance got the tuna burrito - kind of weird sounding but very tasty. Blacksburg has needed a place like this for a long time. Go! read more

The house margaritas are my favorite anywhere. They are limey but they don't have the burn/sour bite of most margaritas. I guess smooth is the best descriptor I can give it, which I've never used for a tequila drink. I got the bang bang shrimp tacos, AMAZING. I also tried my husband's Thai chili tofu tacos which were great. They were interesting because I thought it would be the traditional sweet Thai chili sauce, but these actually have more of soy sauce and peanut flavor. The chips are great- crispy and salty. I didn't love the corn salsa but I think that's just a personal preference and still worth a try. I would absolutely come here again and recommend to everyone. I went here with some friends before moving out of Blacksburg and I have to admit, I wasn't impressed. Maybe I just don't like fish tacos but theirs was pretty gross. The fish was breaded and deep fried and smothered in a nasty mayo-like sauce. I've had fish tacos elsewhere that I've liked but theirs is so rich it makes your stomach queasy. This place used to be great when it first opened. I was a huge fan. Over time though the service and food quality have really fallen. The fried fish tacos are always pretty good with their avacado spread, but I would stay away from anything that has shrimp in it. The last 2 times I had them they tasted really "off" with the last being inedible. The corn salsa is different and okay when you don't get the old whither tomatoes in it. Dude, go to Cabo. If you've never been, you owe it to yourself to go check it out at least once. My favorite there are the buffalo shrimp tacos. They're fresh and spicy and full of flavor. My husband isn't a big fish fan but he really enjoys the southwest chicken wrap. My 5 year old son really likes their quesadilla too! Bonus points be being super fast to bring out food AND having superb outdoor seating. Like most downtown Blacksburg restaurants, parking isn't ideal but better than most and I *think* cabo validates parking for the kent square garage right across the street but I could be wrong.
