I haven't been to a wide variety of eating establishments in the Blacksburg college town area so I don't have a lot to compare Centro to which is why, for now, 4 Stars is what I'm giving this place as my inaugural rating. BUT....signs are REALLY PROMISING FOR AN UPGRADE TO 5 STARS if the 2 times I've been here - once in July and then a few weeks ago before the start of classes - are any indication. This was a total stumbled-on find for us and Yelp once again assisted us in picking this little gem. We were looking for a dinner spot, in the mood for anything, just wanted to find someplace with good reviews, went searching on Yelp and came across Centro. Prices were just right and street tacos sounded amazing and a healthier choice - but not too healthy lol - than a greasy burger joint, fast food or an overpriced sit down. Finding the place, at night, was tricky believe it or not. There were noooo pics in Yelp of the shopfront (there are now, check 'em out) and we went up and down the block where google maps indicated it was. Folks - it's a 2nd floor place with 2 small front entrances - the main one right on N Main - a tiny door with a big illustrated skull on the black awning (hard to see in the dark) - sandwiched in between Poor Billy's (on the corner of N Main and Jackson) and Boudreaux's. The other entrance to Centro is on Jackson, just around the corner. Just outside the Jackson entrance, you'll see the makeshift outside dining area for Centro - like 5 or 6 table/chair sets roped off as the street is still a through street for traffic. Clever outside dining area actually - tables are sufficiently distanced, servers wore masks, tables are cleaned diligently and only QR code online menus! Oh and on warm, sunny days, there is large-tree-shade providing nice relief. Way to go! Okay - now for THE FOOD! Sooooooo gooooood! Caveat: we've only ever had the a la carte street tacos and the side order of chips and salsa and guac. That's all. But that's been plenty for us and sufficiently filling and satisfying. The menu isn't extensive and they're not Taco Bell (thank goodness!) or On the Border - but Centro doesn't need to be. I figure their limited menu allows them to focus on QUALITY and what they do best. And it shows - YUM. Value: Absolutely excellent value! Way to go Centro for making your fare way-affordable for students! Totally worth the cost. Quality and fresh ingredients and generous portions on each taco. Lime wedges are a nice touch. The tray of chips is overflowing and enough to group-share. The guac is house made (you can tell) and the salsa is pico de gallo style. They have other hot, medium and mild sauces they'll bring you upon request. Service: Amazing! :) Both times, our servers were on-it, polite and responsive. Our wait for food was minimal (though truthfully, both times we went during non rush). Centro ROCKS. Give them your business and tip your server generously - they're worth it and worth keeping them going! Hoping for huge success for Centro as the new school year begins and as small local businesses like Centro are coming out of the Covid shutdown. read more

3.5 stars Awesome authentic taco place! Tried the buffalo chicken, chorizo, chicken, and al pastor tacos. All were delicious but the buffalo chicken was definitely the best! The regular chicken taco was a little bland, so I would pass on that and try their other options. Comes with a roasted red salsa and a green salsa. The green was very good but I wish the red salsa was spicy because the tacos could have used a little kick. Solid chips and queso, and the salsa for the chips actually gave the tacos the spice I needed. Good margaritas too. I would like to come back and try their loaded fries and tortas soon read more

Centro reopened with outside patio service in the "reclaimed" parking spaces on Jackson St. which make for a nice open socially distanced seating area. The host seated us quickly and in under a minute our server arrived with ice water, a smile underneath her mask, ready to take drink orders. Two margaritas to start the evening, a toast to beautiful weather and the first meal out in almost three months! (I can't shake the feeling of guilt though) We each ordered three tacos, I had a grilled shrimp, chorizo, and, on our servers recommendation, steak; my wife had a breaded tilapia, veggie, and pork. All the tacos were delicious with the chorizo and shrimp my favorite! The great service, delicious tacos and refreshing margaritas made for a wonderful evening out. We'll definitely be back soon! First remember this is a college dive bar. Very good bartender. Friendly staff. Can get crowded at nights but good to stop in before about 8pm and not overly crowded. A little more of a heavy bar version of El Rodeo brand popular in area. read more

We went here for lunch and waited our entire lunch hour to be served. Ordered the fajita tacos and they had very little flavor. Hubby ordered a variety of tacos and said the same. The best thing was the queso dip. Not to mention we got no utensils or napkins. The tacos were very messy so I had to get up to go to the bar for napkins. Disclaimer: only after coming here did I hear about the multiple allegations of drinks being drugged, so please do your own research to ensure it is safe if you decide to go. I picked to celebrate my birthday here, which in hindsight, wasn't the smartest choice because my birthday is Cinco de Mayo. Regardless, I ended up LOVING it; I think all my friends enjoyed it as well. Miraculously, we didn't have to wait too long; they have ample outdoor seating to be COVID-safe. We ordered their chips trio, teriyaki and buffalo chicken wings, and centro aioli fries for appetizers. Everything was a hit; I highly recommend ordering all 3 for appetizers if your party is large enough. One of my friends always raves about the birria tacos which come with a small side of ramen broth, but I love seafood so I ended up getting 2 shrimp tacos which were AMAZING. I also ordered 1 pastor taco, but I enjoyed the shrimp ones much more. Also, the service was super nice and attentive; our waitress was very patient and didn't outwardly mind that we kept ordering more. If you like a packed bar with a bunch of sweaty college freshman this is the bar for you. The food is pretty good but if your looking to go to happy hour and sit down your thinking wrong. Thursday - Saturday after 6pm it's packed and there are no tables. But if you go early in the day and order food it's very good. Service is so-so. I enjoy the place every time I go! read more

Tried this place out for the first time tonight in the outdoor seating they now have. Overall we where really happy with the food. The tacos are your standard flavors but really solid. I hope in the future they have some more specialty tacos with different flavors and combinations. 2-3 tacos is a standard order, we also ordered 1 chips and guacamole to share and it was plenty. read more

This place is amazing! They have great drink specials, a fairly large marg for 7-8 dollars, pitchers of beers for 10-12 dollars as well. The tacos are authentic and well priced with a variety of salsas. They decor and the place itself has great vibes and will definitely be a staple on taco tuesdays! so glad blacksburg opened up a place like this. read more

Best Mexican food in Blacksburg and Christiansburg. I've tried most if not all Mexican spots in both areas and even though some were good but the portions were too little for their price.:: and some places had really dry chicken or the food wasn't good at all. I tried this taco bar today after having a door dash order from there (I am a dasher) and it just smelt so good I had to go try something. My niece and I decided to try steak tacos and birria tacos. The food here is amazing, loved dining outside when it was warmer. Definitely the most authentic Mexican food in town. The tortas and anything birria are excellent. The vibe is much different though indoors, as this is the old Big Al's, and undergrads are still treating it as such. Extremely loud, dark and a little messy, and no airflow at all in a pretty packed place. There is a large fan on the ceiling but it wasn't on, so didn't feel they were taking all the precautions they could have been. They were short staffed and the waitstaff was having to make their own drinks pretty hastily behind the bar. The restaurant is moving next door to the old Boudreux's so perhaps it will be better there, but for now I think I will only do takeout if I order from Centro. Didn't expect or really enjoy the frat party. read more

Ordered a veggie burrito via delivery and it came quickly and was pretty decent. The vegetables were definitely the weakest part of the burrito and seemed almost like they weren't seasoned at all which seemed strange for a taco place. read more

The veggie tacos here are fantastic and definitely unique compared to typical veggie tacos I've had at other places. The one thing I will say though is that the waffle fries are rather tasteless and soggy though so I'd skip on them. read more

Drinks were good and strong. But we came around 6 to get food and we ordered tortas. Somehow, they ran out of bread so I got tacos de birria. Not sure what authentic Mexican restaurant runs out of torta bread at 6pm?? But okay, cool. I chose to try the tacos. I was exited to try my birria ramen soup that came with it because I always wanted to try authentic Mexican street food. My birria ramen soup barley had ramen. Literally had like three strands of noodle. The tacos didn't fill me up so I ordered quesadillas. I still wasn't full. Overall, the food is okay but i wouldn't consider it "authentic." Yummy tacos delivered to our hotel in 30 minutes (bravo) after a late move-in time at VA Tech and all the restaurants were packed. El Pastor and Chorizo were THE best, fantastic with the spicy homemade sauce and a little lime. Delicious flour tortillas. Chips and salsa were awesome. Liked the least: guacamole (maybe needed more lime?) steak (too much like ground beef) then carnitas (too greasy and not flavor. But with our store-bought beer and exhaustion from the day, Centro hit the spot. We would be happy to eat here again. I'd love to be able to eat in person on the patio with a margarita! read more

We loved this place! Came on a whim for lunch with my daughter. Service was outstanding. We had the steak, chicken, and grilled shrimp tacos. The shrimp was definitely our favorite. Also has a carnitas tortas which is now my favorite sandwich in Blacksburg. The chips were good but my daughter absolutely loved the salsa and said them at was her favorite thing. Fries that came with tortas were fine. I would have preferred a side of chips and salsa instead and will ask for that in the future Overall, a welcome addition to the Blacksburg restaurant scene and I will certainly be back read more

This place is decent. I don't love it and I don't hate it. My main complaint is the drinks. My favorite frozen drink is a Miami Vice so I know what it's supposed to taste like and whatever they serve here under the name "Miami Vice" is not a Miami Vice. It is extremely sour and very thick. I do not like it. Also, the chips are always over cooked and have a slight burnt taste to them. Not good. read more
