Hauled out this past May. Bid out to two other shipyards with Cabrillo being the most competitive in price. More importantly I recieved a call back within 45 minutes from Leslie, Cabrillo Operations Manager, to review the work to be done, and pricing. This family owned and operated yard focuses on the customer and do their best to ensure a good haul out and repair experience. An unnamed shipyard in Alamitos Bay did not even call me back after leaving a message of what I was looking for in a haul out. My boat a 42 foot Grand Banks needed the bottom painted and a few minor repairs. Cabrillo allowd me to repaint my boot line as a DIY. Awesome. I cannot recommend anyone better. I really try not to leave negative reviews for small businesses, but this experience was frustrating enough that I felt it was worth sharing. We initially hauled our boat out at this yard for a survey. They offer a program where, if you return within 30 days to have the quoted work completed, the original haul-out charge is credited toward the work. During that first haul-out, the yard had the opportunity to see and inspect the entire bottom of the boat. We then received a quote to have the bottom prepared and repainted. Approximately three weeks later, we returned based on that quote and had the boat hauled out again to have the work completed. Once the boat was already out of the water and on their property, we were told there were more barnacles than expected and that the price would need to increase. This is where I had an issue. I completely understand that estimates for boat work can change. Boats are complicated, and sometimes a shop starts taking something apart or opens up an area and discovers corrosion, damage, or additional work that could not reasonably have been seen beforehand. In that situation, I would absolutely understand an additional charge. That was not what happened here. The additional charge was for barnacles on the bottom of the boat. The bottom had been fully visible to the yard during the first haul-out just a few weeks earlier. Nothing had to be opened, disassembled, or investigated to discover them. They were right there on the hull when the original estimate was prepared. The additional work involved removing the barnacles and preparing the surface before sanding and painting. I was genuinely surprised that this was suddenly being treated as an unexpected condition after the yard had already seen the bottom and quoted the job. When I questioned why this had not been included in the original estimate, I was met with a defensive response along the lines of, "What do you want us to do, the work for free?" No. I wasn't asking anyone to work for free. I was asking them to honor, or at least reasonably stand behind, a quote they provided after already inspecting the exact area in question. The most frustrating part was the timing. Once a boat is hauled out and sitting in a yard, the boat owner has very little practical leverage. Moving the boat somewhere else means launching it again, potentially transporting it, arranging another haul-out, and incurring substantial additional expense. I did not appreciate having the price renegotiated after the boat was already back out of the water. I had actually been warned about this yard by the previous boat owner when I purchased the boat. I chose to give them a chance anyway because they were one of the available yards in Long Beach at the time. To be fair, they were accommodating with scheduling and worked within my timeframe for hauling the boat out, which I appreciated. I also thought the quality of the finished bottom work was good. For additional context, I was quoted $180 per hour for labor, including work that appeared to be primarily manual labor rather than specialized technical work. My negative experience is therefore not about the quality of the finished work, nor do I expect a boatyard to guarantee that every estimate can never change. My issue is much narrower: the condition that supposedly justified the price increase was fully visible when the original quote was prepared, yet the additional charge was raised only after the boat had already been hauled out for the second time and was sitting in their yard. Had they identified the barnacle removal and additional preparation during the first haul-out and included it in the original estimate, I would have had no problem paying for it. It was the way the price changed after the boat was already committed to the yard that left me very dissatisfied with the experience. read more

Not a great experience. Overall charge was way more than estimated. They painted over my thru hulls, bad quality on workmanship, broke some plumbing and blamed it on age with out replacing it. Leslie was nice though. read more

do not use this company chris and lesley are thiefs!. i am the mom of the situation that watched this all happen step by step. they ripped my son off for a total of 5600. as you can see by the less than subpar work with dripping fiberglass and the wrong seal they were paid 5600 to fix. they cut off fiberglass to try and make a seal work that wasnt the right one and charged him for it. failed right when hit the water. anyone that isn't even in the marine industry can tell by photos below that there are no excuses to be had. these people need to be closed down. these will continue not only from us but from previous clients that have gotten into touch with us with the same rip off story as we have from chris and lesley carrillo boat shop. they automatically blocked all of our phone numbers, refused to provide any insurance or business license information. they steal your money and wonder why your hanging up on a 60 woman!. i will make sure my son gets his money back period. poked momma bear.. read more

As everyone knows or comes to find out, boats require maintenance, care, and most importantly: flexibility. This also applies to working with a boatyard. If they say, "it'll take another day or two to take your boat out of the water," it is best to be flexible as they have to be. And this is where my father and I found Cabrillo Boat Shop to be our best fit! It was an overall positive experience! In our case, with our Newport 30, we did wait two days acceptingly for the boat to be pulled out. The manager, Kai, couldn't have been more helpful. If it wasn't for him, I would have been frustrating. His overall professionalism is up to par with a large scale business and should be rewarded. With the great prices, nice people, and a straight forward "fee-chart" makes it so much less stressful. And with the stress of buying all the boat parts that goes with "boating", less stress in a boatyard can make anyone happier! Made us! I just took a customer's 41' Maxum over for a pre sale inspection. Everything went smoothly. Junior handled the crane lift zero issues as always. The whole staff made it a great time. The new yard and equipment look fantastic and they have plenty of boats to repair and paint. Leslie was awesome handling all the paperwork and making everything go smoothly. If you need paint or repairs on your boat don't bother with any other boat yard, Cabrillo Boat yard is the only yard I will use and have used for many years. Quality repairs at a fair price. I met Don the owner by chance. To be honest he was having some employee issues when I first did business here. He had my boat much longer than expected and communication was difficult. Don recognized this and made it up in spades. He even wrote me a thank you letter which was hand written and still sits on my desk. The crew does great work and in the end Don will always make sure it's right! All of us have challenges especially if you are a business owner. What separates people is how they react to it. We are VERY happy with the entire experience at Cabrillo Boat Shop. The staff were all friendly, and informative, they were patient and explained everything that I asked before, during, and closing out the job. I just had bottom paint, and topside buff and wax on a 27 ft sailboat, in 3 days flat. This boat hadn't been painted in years, and needed small blisters repaired, and major paint. Thank you Don! I recently purchased my first boat and got hit with a little bit of buyers remorse because I thought I had a major repair on my hands. My "MAJOR" repair was small to the other guys and they wouldn't even consider taking a look at the job, but Don did! He came out this evening after I called him this afternoon and calmed me down. Took my Sea Ray to Cerritos ( Eddies) to have the out drives serviced, painted and bottom paint done they told me it would be 3500 and take 5 days 3 weeks later my bill was $9500 and the drives were leaking there was blue paint on one side ( my boat is white ) and a joint was left on my boat, there were dings on the side of my boat and it was filthy! I took it then to Cabrillo's they told me the work done by Cerritos was done very poorly from putting after market parts on backwards to not prepping for paint they told me it would take a week and be $4000 to fix. One week later it was done and was just under $4000. They washed my boat and took great care. The staff is amazing! Lesley, Jr and Caesar really took the time to explain everything to me, I am a new boat owner and nervous. Cabrillo's made a horrible experience a much happier one. If you love your boat like I love mine only take your boat to Cabrillo's. read more

The staff at Cabrillo Boat Shop are GREAT to work with. Upon dropping the boat off, the Office Manager, Kisha, drove me back to Shoreline Marina to pick up my car. I also really appreciated the owner, Don, asking me on a Saturday, "... if I would like a scaffold put up so it would be easier for me to clean, wax, and buff my boat?" It was terrific just to be allowed to come in on Saturday and Sunday to work on my boat while awaiting the final painting process. When I picked up the boat I was also pleased to see the staff washing the boat once they had launched it. Expectations were definitely EXCEEDED at Cabrillo Boat Shop! The old adage applies: BOAT - break out another thousand. Let's face it, boating is expensive. It's nice once in a while to feel like you're not getting ripped off. Our family has a larger size boat, which is increasingly difficult to pull out of the water anywhere in Los Angeles area. secondly its hard to find someone who is honest and gives you a fair quote before work begins. I really like this boat yard! I had a great experience with everyone I dealt with.. from the Foreman (Jr.) to the Office Manager (Kaye) to the Owner (Don). They answered all of my questions and completed my work in a professional and timely manner, all at a thoroughly reasonable rate that was much less than what I had been quoted at other yards. They also went over all of the work with me before starting and pointed out things that will need attention eventually but not right now. I had put off painting my bottom because other things kept coming up and, before I knew it, I was looking my week-long vacation in the face. I called Don and he was able to squeeze me in and get my work done in time for my vacation. Thanks Don! This yard is definitely off the beaten path but they do great work and have quite a following. They also allow you to do your own work on your boat if it is in their yard over the weekend. I was referred here by my surveyer. Don and his crew pulled our boat out of the water 3 times in the last year. They did a bunch of maintenance, cleaning and paint. My outside repairs took a lot longer than expected but even though there's very limited space in the dry dock area, Don never bothered us. Saw all the great reviews and was excited to have a good experience here. Don gave me a quote of $50 - $60 per foot to have the boat bottom painted on my 42' sailboat. Had it hauled on Monday and they sent me the new estimate on Tuesday, $72/foot. Called to ask why the increase because the bottom of my boat was very clean, no blisters or extra work. They only used a quart of primer. Autam said they usually charge $75/foot. I sent her a copy of the email quote Don sent me 30 days ago, her only explanation was she was new and that is the price. I then asked to talk to Don. Don said Autam is his new office manager and what she says goes. He is loosing money and is sorry he can't charge me what he quoted. Don said he had the lowest price around. I told Don that is not true. I have another quote from a good boat yard in Newport Beach that gave me a quote for the same work at $58/foot. I went to Cabrillo because it was closer and had good reviews. Bottom line I left the boat there because I didn't want to take more days off work to pick it up, get a new appointment somewhere else, take it there and then pick it up again. Work for the most part was fine. I had them repack my shaft, but they didn't tighten the lock nut, so half way back to the slip it is spewing water. I just fixed it myself. read more

Excellent Boat Yard! One of Long Beach's best kept secrets!! After spending HOURS at the larger boat yard in town, I was almost ready to wait until my boat was transported to San Diego for repair. My mechanic told me I had an alternative and he knew of a wonderful boat yard in town that would not only provide a better rate, but would get the job done faster and will a high level of customer service. From the moment we pulled up to the dock, it was first class all the way. They were waiting to greet us as soon as we pulled up to the dock. Within 10 minutes of pulling up they had my boat out of the water and already began to power wash the hull which was being primed and painted. Within 3 days they were finished. They kept me informed on the progress and when I went to pick her up she was ready. They also paid extra attention to detail by washing her and making sure she looked spiffy before I picked her up. They were so polite and friendly and took the time to answer all of my questions. the office staff was extremely helpful as well. My boat is down in San Diego now but I HIGHLY recommend Cabrillo Boat yard to anyone having work done. It is off the beaten path and a little hard to find but well worth it. read more
