Finally a place that rents boats that you can take into the ocean! Although you're not allowed to go too far out. And they're phasing out their most powerful boat, the 75hp, because of too much abuse and the associated high insurance costs. But they still offer the 40hp boat and that has plenty of power, with a top speed of about 20 knots. It comfortably seats 4 people in designated seats, but can fit an extra two people sitting up front sideways on bench seating. I had a great time. I saw seals sunbathing on the buoys, and I even saw dolphins near the first oil rig island by the Queen Mary ship. Of course you can also get a nice close-up view of the Queen Mary itself. You're allowed to go almost to the Seal Beach Municipal Pier, but not quite. 1hr duration is enough if you want to do a quick single lap of the designated ocean area. 2hrs is highly recommend if you want to take your time and not be rushed. Be sure to bring a light jacket, hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the wind and sun. The designated driver is not allowed to drink. I'm not sure if the rest of the guests are allowed to drink. Park near the Yard House restaurant and then walk to the back of the restaurant and you'll see the little hut with the staff in it. If nobody is there then look over the edge to the docked boats because the staff might be down there instead. read more

The 40hp boat was not powerful enough for 6 passengers out in the Long Beach harbor past the Queen Mary. Because we couldn't get up on a plane, the small waves ended up splashing everyone on the boat. We just puttered around the shoreline marina. They decide not to let me know any of they 10 days prior to me arriving there. They decide to tell me when I arrive for our designated time, so my 5 yr. old nephews could be disappointed in person. What is that??? No call no email. Then the pontoon They tried to substitute was filthy, broken seat, and not even close to what we wanted, which was a 40hp boat with some speed. So disappointed. That corner of the marina is full of trash and floating objects. A perfect place to park the raggedy boats that they offer. A $500 deposit is ridiculous for the quality of boats they offer. They also fail to mention the deposit until the very last minute. I recommend going to any other boat rental place in the area. Well, it pains me to leave these reviews. Booked this reservations (4 hours on a duffy boat on a Saturday) about a month in advance. Wasn't too difficult to find based on instructions -- a small blue shack behind the Yard House to check in. Checking in was relatively easy. The staff, a young female, reviewed a map and made it clear where we could/not go -- she was sweet and patient. Once down on the dock, we met a young staff member: he was either extremely tired (yawning, no eye contact, dropped the clip board on the ground after we all signed the release...) or -- most likely -- he was high as a kite. He was disengaged and seemed disinterested in general. You ok bro? About an hour into the boat ride, which was super fun at first, the boat started making an extremely concerning sound -- like something was banging up against the bottom of the boat. We called the "emergency" number (no answer the first two calls), and the person told us it was "fine." It was NOT fine. We ended up having to go back and switch boats (9 people, several coolers, lots of bags...). All fine, right? As we were switching boats, one of the staff members shouts out "Is your driver sober?" Welp, I was the driver, yes I was sober, and wow...strike 2 -- that was rude! The "backup" duffy boat was not great. Super slow. But it did what was needed. We had an amazing time, but mainly because we know how to make the best out of any situation. Overall, I would not recommend this business. There are other boat rental folks in this area that have higher ratings that I would probably try next time. Both boats were old and clearly in need of maintenance, and the staff were immature and rude. I tried to provide this feedback after the ride, and no one was interested in hearing me. This is just about the greatest thing you can do in Long Beach! It's a little expensive, but so worth it! You can rent different boats, but the 40hp is well worth it as you can cruise all around the harbor and the oil islands. The staff here are super helpful and friendly! I worked with J.C., Dylan and Josh and they were all three just terrific. We got the smallest boat available it seats six comfortably and it went pretty quick for being the smallest engine available plenty of room to put your stuff in the boat just be sure to wear sunscreen my husband forgot to put it on and his legs are totally red. Only thing that I wish they could have done was give us a better map on paper to hand us we ended up getting confused as where we could and couldn't go and I believe we went farther than we should have it was hard to read the map as each different size boat can go out farther than the smallest one. I walked in without a reservation on Sunday with my 16 year old son and inquired about the speed boats. Carlos was very clear about what I should rent as a first-timer. So, I rented a basic speed boat for only an hour. Again, Carlos was very clear and made everything easy to understand. He even gives you a great tutorial on how to navigate the bay. Of course the actual speed boat experience was great! But it's nice to have the peace of mind that Carlos is only a phone call away and he will drive out to help you if you run into any issues while you're out there. BOOKING// We booked everything online. These boats sell out fast (especially in the summer) and booking online is really the only way to go. You can try and book onsite, but no guarantee the watercraft you're looking for will be available. Online booking includes signing a waiver so you don't have to worry about it later. Print out your confirmation just in case (but they didn't even really ask for it). Bring your ID and the credit card you used to book and you're all set! Easy peasy. THE SETUP// 9.9 HP Powerboat We are a family of 4. Our boys are twin 8 year olds and we fit with no problem. I think 6 people is going to get a bit tight and will make it hard to stand and move around while on the water. We walked up their booth (which is right behind the Yard House restaurant) and spoke to the cashier/host. Super nice guy and great service. Guided us to the dock directly below and we met our boat handler who gave us a quick rundown on safety and operation instructions. We felt well taken care of. The boat we chose is for "In-Harbor" only.. which means you can only go around the channel where the Queen Mary and other cruise liners sit. For us, this was a perfect set up since this is our first time. 2 hours was a little long to just be in this area.... BUT, 1 hour would've been way too short. We didn't feel rushed and we took our time idling in the water, eating, doing donuts in the water, and just cruising looking for pelicans, waving to passing ships, and enjoying the views and the perfect weather. I think for our next rental, we will be ready for the bigger powerboats which can cruise towards the beach area and really allow you to go a bit farther into the open ocean. No complaints either way.. We loved our lil' 9.9! VERDICT// I feel people will visit this site thinking whether to rent boats here in Long Beach or Newport Beach. I've been to Newport and I've seen how tight the harbor is there. Traffic can be a problem. So, if you want less traffic in the water, more open space, and renting a faster boat, go here. An enjoyable experience I would repeat! I booked reservations about two weeks in advance online. The check in process was quick. The lesson on how to steer the boat was brief, but overall friendly. It was simple instructions and we were out on the water in under 5 minutes. I went around 5 p.m. in October. It's nice and not too cold. It might get more chilly in the winter months, so I would recommend a jacket. Also keep in mind that you'll be facing the sun when you drive the boat west, so maybe sunglasses are good to bring too. We had dinner plans after, so we didn't bring food on the boat, but I think it would be fun to do with a group. I tried to wear the life jacket provided (but not mandatory to wear), but it was a little bit dusty/dirty from sitting on the floor of the boat. I went twice in two days, so that's gotta say something, right? Had I not dropped my keys in the water while exiting the boat on Day One, I wouldn't have had to come back so quickly. Yes, you read that right: my keys fell out my pocket/hands as I was disembarking. Tip: Consider leaving your keys ashore. Prior to that things were all cool: a nice little motorboat for a two hour rental. (Thanks Yelp Check-in, giving a decent discount). Worked with Ryan and Josh, who were helpful and friendly. Our boat doesn't go that fast, but that wasn't the point. Point was, get out there and have a little two hour tour. Fun, relaxing, not too crowded, nor choppy. (Go earlier in the day for less choppy seas.) Cool to be that close to the Queen Mary, and see the birds swooping down for lunch. But, back to my tragedy: With my keys inches (feet?) from the pier, Ryan or Josh asked their diver, Keegan, to help. Keegan had plans to go out to dinner with his lovely wife, Lacey. And also, it was almost 5pm, tide was high, and the light waning. Perfect scenario, ugh. But, Keegan (or David, as he's also called) said he'd try. After about 10-15 minutes, it was obvious that this wasn't going to have any pleasant outcome. He suggested we try tomorrow, when the tide is lower and the sun is higher. Um, well, ok. I mean, what could I say? But, I believed him and somehow I felt this wasn't going to be the end of my keys....which had two car keys on them, no pressure. One car-key is the only key I have for my old car, and the other key is the newer car which has the electronics attached... Yikes. Not yet panicking, I Yelped around for dinner ideas, and found a lovely meal http://bit.ly/1QmuW9w before an Uber home. Next day, I touched base with the Keegans. Desperate to help the search, I mentioned that my key chain had special powers. Well, it was a red shiny metal bottle opener that says, 'YELP.' Soon after Keegan got his wetsuit on for the second time in pursuit of saving my sanity, I get a picture from Keegan saying, 'I hope these are yours.' And, of course, they were. So, on my return trip to Long Beach to get my keys, my new best friend, Keegan, told me that he saw just a speck of red peeking out of the ocean floor and fauna. Had it not been for that speck of shiny, I would still be without my car. Thank you Keegan and Lacey. Thank you Yelp for the key chain. Ryan did say that when we came back, we'd have a boat ride on them. So, with my keys safely with Josh and Ryan in the kiosk ON LAND for Long Beach Boat Rentals, we tried out a different boat: a Duffy. Electric, covered, and has a radio. Lots of fun, and begs you to bring a picnic. Well, next time. Cause there'll definitely be a next time. Thanks to the great service, solid boats, and totally going beyond the call of duty on all fronts. We lucked out big time.
