They have put a new catalytic converter on my car; repaired my radiator; de-carbonized my engine; fixed my brakes; repaired a broken motor mount; replaced my ignition coils, and fixed my cv axle. Not in that order. New Orleans is hard on vehicles, but they've kept my 2016 Toyota corolla running all these years. In their shop is a sign that reads "Quality work at an affordable price." That is what you get. One of the best things about them is how they traige your vehicle; they tease out what needs to be done today from what can wait, and they tell you how long it can wait. DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED WHEN YOU INITIALLY CALL. They are always scheduling ~2 weeks out, so if you can wait, do it! They're extremely friendly, honest and knowledgeable. I've never been so impressed with a car repair shop, I'm always afraid I'm going to get ripped off, especially since I know nothing about cars and have an older one (2005). By the time the two weeks was here, I had already purchased AAA and was able to utilize the free tow. Towed car there around 7am, got a call around 9am with the diagnostic and very reasonable cost, luckily it wasn't major, and I gave the go ahead. They called around 2pm and told me it's done. They also noted me there might be a battery issue, but charged it up and it had been starting since, so didn't replace it (aka didn't replace unnecessary parts to increase my bill). Unfortunately when I went to pick the car up an hour later, the battery had lost its charge and it didn't start, but within 30 minutes (on a Friday afternoon), they had sourced a new battery. I witnessed them calling around to get me the best price, they picked the battery up and installed it and I was out the door. Bonus they didn't charge me for the battery install since I had paid for the battery charge up that didn't end up working. Other shops have tried to rip me off in the craziest ways - one even trying to tell me that my carburetor was a $1000 "drivability capacitor" that I needed to have replaced. Fortunately, I know my automotive parts and basic repairs, so I kept searching for a reliable mechanic - and have been a Cacamo's client ever since a good friend recommended them to me. Cacamo's is not only HONEST, both with diagnostics and fair pricing, but they are FAST! I had a head gasket leak - usually a pretty pricey and laborious repair - that was less than $500 and was done the same day. It seems all in the family- like, I even want to just say, "I'm bringing the car into Uncle Cacamo's" and maybe I'll see cousin Joey, or something. OK, so based on fellow yelpers' stunning reviews (major props to Missy W who alerted to me to Cacamo's in the first place), I decided I could no longer suffer a New Orleans summer without A/C. Mine had been kaput for about 2 weeks before I caved. You know it's not good when you start to hallucinate ice storms while driving, right? Oh and I have a VW Bug. I know, I know. You're bracing yourselves for it and you should. The short story is, things were OK, if not a LITTLE annoying every few months when something that would otherwise be a routine fix happened. Like, a heeadlight goes out and, "OH NO," your regular service station shakes their head, "you gotta bring that to the dealer because we gotta take off the entire front of the car," etc because Volkswagens are *just like that.* Driving out to Kenner and leaving the car there really sucks. You can't walk home. You can walk directly across the street to Starbucks or get decent Vietnamese food for lunch, while you stress-eat spring rolls because all you can think about is your what your final bill is going to be, that's about it. So, I tend to put off car repairs. Hell, even the oil change is annoying. I've been going Uptown to the Shell station on Magazine and recently went in early June, when I was told I needed this and that filter cleaned, etc and lo and behold, mere days after getting this crap done to my car when I only had intended to get an oil change, my A/C crapped out on one of our infamous 90 degree days with 100 percent humidity. "I've got this," I thought. "I'm going to just wait it out for a while because I don't feel like going to Kenner. I don't feel like spending a fortune for a fix, either." My boyfriend, while not a mechanic, tried to fix it with refrigerant/sealer and then discovered there was a huge tear in the tube. "Oh, just a tear in the tube," you may be thinking. Hell, I fooled myself there for a minute before remembering, VOLKSWAGEN. Yes, only slightly encouraging because while it meant I didn't need to replace the system, something innocuous like this does not guarantee a cheap fix because. Volkswagen. (See where I'm going with this? If you can only learn one thing, learn that you need to not ever buy a Volkswagen). So, we bring the bug to Cacamo's and they pretty much confirmed my suspicions: this silly little tube was not coming cheaply. What's more? Despite the fact that my car is a 2006, Volkswagen had charmingly decided to DISCONTINUE the fucking tube. And so, I deem the Volkswagen the "Apple of cars" because despite my love & devotion to Apple products, it would be nice if they could keep stuff like adaptors the same for at least 2 years. I digress. What this entailed was hours of Uncle Cacamo's and the cousins locating a part in GERMANY (seriously. Germany. For a BMW or Mercedes,I get this. But their lowbrow little distant relation, I don't think so) THEN they did some magic and got it custom made for just 50 dollars more. You know, so I don't have to wait a week for A/C because this summer ain't getting any cooler. FYI The car was brought in around 8:30 and we had it back by the time they closed at 5:30. Sidenote: I used to call her Jolene, but I've kinda disowned her at this point. But really, the end result is, I'll be getting rid of that VW Bug any day now and get a car that has non-luxe European needs. read more

My usual trustworthy spot in New Orleans was tied up due to Jazz Fest congestion, so I turned to Yelp for an emergency alternative and found myself at Cacamo's bright and early. My morning began with pleasant conversation, welcoming friendliness, and a reassurance that my problems would be solved. Cacamo's embodies all that there is to love about the service industry in New Orleans, and my morning was spent in as pleasant an environment as being in my own home. As early as my parts could be obtained, they were ordered. The repairs happened quickly and at no point did I ever get the feeling that I was burdening someone's day with my emergency. In fact, there was no point of my morning where I wasn't completely aware of what was happening with my repair. I felt 100% completely at ease... and I can only mirror what has already been said in previous reviews. Once the repair was complete, the owner not only double-checked by retesting my car, but asked me to join him at my car until I had confidence and reassurance that I was truly out of the woods. Then came the bill - I was astonished when I was given a bill a full 1/3 less than my usual spot. Okay, I'm now a Cacamo Convert. But, I want to add, that in my time hanging out in the lobby, I was witness to a lot of interactions between staff and customer, and my experience wasn't unique. Everyone that came in was treated like a family member. It reminded me of being 16 and owning my first car and my dad helping me to solve every problem I encountered. That may seem extreme - but more than once this morning, I was transported back to my teenage years hovering over an open hood with my dad at my side. One last note: cash or check only! I could not be more dissppointed in this business. The great reviews I read led me to reach out to Cacamo's, in order to get my timing belt and water pump replaced. The reviews that said this shop only takes cash or check were giving me the impression that this was a place where they believe in old-fashioned values, and where straight talk and straight business would happen, without the headaches of today's computer-dominated industries. A mechanic answered the phone, but after hearing what I wanted, passed me off (without telling me anything) to a receptionist who sounded annoyed--as though I had just interrupted her doughnut break. At that point, I could already say that I had much more pleasant (and productive) phone conversations with the Department of Motor Vehicles. I expect a receptionist to be less confused, more efficient, and more respectful to people who are approaching them for business. When I proceeded to ask more questions to clarify the quote that she finally gave me, she informed me that she did not "have time to go back and forth," over the fact that I was planning to provide the parts for the work that I was asking them to do, and that she would have to take my name and number and call me back in a couple of hours. 24 hours later, still no call. Not your policy to allow the customer to provide parts? No problem, no matter the reason. Explaining that policy as though you were a resentful elementary teacher, talking to a 2nd grader who has to take your anger over being stuck in a career you did not want? NOW, you have a problem. And the problem does not stop with my taking my thousand dollars to a business run by better attitudes. No, this problem will expand every single time I need auto maintenance or repair in the future. It will pop up every single time any of those who trust my judgement ask me for a recommendation for a good auto shop. I now know one place I will NEVER recommend. In fairness, I must admit the possibility that this mechanic and receptionist were just not working at this place, when all of the great yelp reviews happened. Common sense, however, tells me that they more likely just changed their mannerisms that drastically. For the sake of their would-be customers, I certainly hope that they do not FREQUENTLY shift into these gears (pardon the pun). I came here because I needed my A/C checked and they had great reviews. I was told to leave the car and I'd get a call back within an hour. Never received a call after four hours so I decided to call only to find out that my car wasn't even looked at. I received several excuses, non of which were my concern, so I picked up my vehicle. They were very nice and apologetic but I'd rather they'd told me to come another day instead of keeping my car to no avail. read more

Cacamo's is freaking awesome. Let me tell you why. I took my car to one of the big-name auto repair shops for an oil change. This is a place I have been to a couple of times before in order to get basic work done -- tire rotations, oil changes, etc. I told them that my brakes were squeaking a little bit and I wanted them to check them out. So they did. And they said that while the brakes were fine, the struts were leaking oil and needed to be replaced. They said I'd have to bring the car back another day to do that job and that they could complete the work for $1200. I'm not a car guy but that sounded expensive to me. So I reached out to a friend who dates a car guy. And that car guy told me that yes, that was expensive. He suggested I take the car to Cacamo's so that they could check it out. So I did. And you know what they told me? They told me that my struts were leaking oil and needed to be replaced. And they said they could fix it right there on the spot (if I would leave the car for a few hours) and that they could complete the work for $575. I'm not a math guy either, but I can tell you that's less than HALF of what the big-name auto repair shop quoted me. I don't like to feel like someone is trying to rip me off. For that reason, I'll continue to take my car to the big-name auto shop for basic repairs only. For anything else, Cacamo's is the place for me. NOTE: NO CREDIT CARDS. BRING A CHECK! read more

I took my car there after hitting a curb really hard and they informed me that I had bent the entire frame. Ops. I also had an unrelated issue with my brakes that another shop had replaced the master cylinder THREE times (that review is forthcoming) to no avail. The guys here were honest and fixed all issues and the bent frame for a fraction of what the dealership would have charged me! Cacamo's has been great. They actually try their best to find a reasonably priced solution instead of going for the expensive. And they're SUPER helpful. My alternator had gone out and I was able to get withing a little less than 1/2 mile from their shop. They let me use their portable charger to attach to the car and drive it to them, so I could save the towing fee for such a short trip. Then they quickly got the part and fixed it by the next morning. I love these guys. :-) read more

This past Tuesday evening, when my tie rod broke and I stood in the rain waiting for the tow truck. I thought about how lucky I was. Because my car had the good sense to break down two blocks away from CACAMO'S, gods among men in the realm of auto repair. I dropped off the key at 8:30 am. The friendly, yatty dudes at Cacamo's remembered me and my car from a year ago. They fixed the tie rod and replaced my headlight by 4:30 that same day. The cost was $183. I've also had them fix my air conditioner after it stumped one other mechanic (he said my AC was "haunted" and that's why it worked sporadically...ok dude). Never had any repairs take longer than a day at Cacamo's. It's such a godsend to have a quick, trustworthy, affordable mechanic in Mid-City; I don't even mind that much when my car breaks down now. A very stressful situation (messed up funky car always is) turned into a smooth situation with Cacamo'sit'll work out attitude. It did work out. Heads up - no credit cards. Check & Cash only (to save on those fees). They open early, about 7:30 am, so you can get in there super early. I heard they are open to you dropping off your car to their lot over night if there's roo. & I had a pretty great cup of coffee there too. oh - & if you're nearby, they'll drop you off & pick you up when your car is ready. I had my battery fail when I lived a stones throw away - the owner sent a fella over to jump it and then I could drive to the shop. The battery was toast so it was replaced with no wait. I bought the cheap one having just moved here and penny pinching. That was 3 years ago and just had that battery fail and just before the 3 yr warranty expired. Autozone was supposed to honor the warranty but gave me the run around on the weekend. (Of course break down on Sat/Sun right?!) Amazing! I lived in New Orleans for nine months and went to three different auto repair shops - Cacamo's was by far the most honest, efficient, and affordable. I only wish I hadn't found them at the end of my time in NOLA - they would have saved me money and headaches for sure. I had to replace my tires and the ball gaskets - I was quoted at $1500 by another shop, who also told me it was a better idea to sell my car and that they couldn't guarantee these repairs would fix the problem. Mind you, I was two weeks away from moving across country and had planned to use my car. Luckily, I found Cacamo's. They quoted me just over half the price and said I was good to go cross country. Had to get my alternator replaced and these guys gave me the lowest quote out of all the places I called. They were upfront about the cost for parts and labor and although it ended up being about $65 more than the initial price it was because of taxes and I still left with a new top notch alternator with a lifetime warranty and the guys in the shop were helpful explaining everything cracking jokes in the process. Awesome service!!! We are from seattle and drove down to New Orleans. Our car happened to break down once we get in to town around 4pm while a big festival was going on. I called a few outfits but Cacamos was the only one I could get to answer their phone. Fortunately my husband is a mechanic and he got the engine to run enough to get to their shop. We needed to replace a part for the engine. Once we get there they were very friendly and accomodating. They werent sure if they could get our car fixed by the next day since they had to order a part and that all there bays were full but they managed to fit us in and got our car fixed before lunch time the next day. My little sleek Miata was over heating and i freaked out.I asked several neighbors and friends about trustworthy honest mechanics and out of the 10 or so I asked (yes OCD) they all recommended CACAMO'S! Everyone was so fantastic from the great and kind Carol to the irascible Paul. The part was ordered, (turns out it was my fan assembly ) whew glad I didn't by it myself because they were sent the wrong part and had to go out to get the correct part from the dealer. Long story short if you have any kind of problem or just need maintenance of your vehicles go to CACAMO'S, family owned and run. Great and kind people that will work with you during stressful situations, fast service even though they are Super,Super busy so understand that. They can give quotes over the phone for simple things like oil changes but deep mechanical issues that require hands on , no they can't because they haven't seen your vehicle! Common sense 101! When our daughter moved to NOLA for school we worried because her car is an older model. A few months ago she needed new tires so we advised her to go to a major retailer thinking they would give reputable service. They sold her the tires but told her they couldn't do the alignment because she had a broken front inner tie rod and quoted her $437 for the repair and the alignment. She went to Cacamo's for a second opinion. Hmmm, couldn't find a broken tie rod and did the alignment for about $90 and it has been fine. Went there again 2 weeks ago to have her battery checked after she had to be jump started. She was also having trouble with her steering. They checked the battery, tightened the battery cables, and adjusted something on the steering which fixed the problem. Charged less than $30. They could have easily told her she needed a new battery and she would not have known the difference but they didn't. In my opinion, they are a neighborhood repair shop from days gone by where service is honest, down to earth, reasonably priced, quick and everyone I have met there is super friendly. We feel so relieved that she has a place to bring her car where we feel they won't try to rip her off just because she is young and doesn't know a thing about cars. read more
