I came here fully expecting to see what I would usually see on a weekday afternoon - senior citizens. And you know what senior citizens like? That's right, relatively cheap decent meals and salad bars. This place did not disappoint, there were senior citizens at every table.
I was contemplating going with the old folk and grabbing a plateful of salad because I sleep at old lady hours and I thoroughly enjoy a bowl of tapioca pudding and prunes from time-to-time but something happened.
I peered down at my menu and I saw what I had been craving ever since I left the North Coast of California... Native American fried bread with taco toppings! My curiosity was more than piqued, I was intrigued. I needed to taste Socorro's version of this tasty concoction.
I ordered the fried flat bread chicken taco without the chicken. The waitress had to ask me twice. I told her thrice, "Yes, I want this... yes, I pointed to that item... and yes, you heard right, I do NOT want chicken."
Took about a good 5 minutes before my order came to the table. The waitress had the plate in her hand, holding it in front of my face, my eyes bulging from my face, my mouth salivating... and she stalls...
"Are you sure you didn't want chicken?"
"Yes, I'm vegetarian."
"Oh, because the cook asked twice just to make sure."
Oh, El Paso... yes, I'm vegetarian. No, that's not made up and being a real vegetarian means not eating beef AND other animals with a face or a beak.
Once I finally had the meal in front of me I found the bread to be... different. Just not as good as the one I had in Humboldt County, but I'd go here again to eat something that reminds me a little bit of my time in the Redwoods. read more
