The food was where my 2 stars got subtracted. The tortilla chips are bagged white tortilla chips & extremely over salted. I prefer fresh fried chips; but hopefully the saltiness was just due to being near the bottom of the bag or something. My favorite place but the last two times it hasn't been good. First got served the wrong food so had to send it back and wait longer. Then I get served this burned taco and man was it scorched. We're natives of Gulf Breeze, & have been patrons of the Cactus Flower since they first opened under the original owners. It's always been one of our favorite restaurants in this area. The food & service was always exceptional. When they sold to the owners of Johnny Houston's, we were fearful of the changes we suspected would come. The first disappointment was the complete change to the ambiance . We understood the changes from cloth table linens and cloth napkins to paper, & the once soft ambient lighting to the now harsh LED lights, we could live with that, but when the quality and quantity of the food began to change, we had to say something. We as locals are the ones who are there to support restaurants during their less busy times of the year, whether it be in person or to pick up an order. On the last few occasions we've been there in person and to pick up take out, the quality and quantity of our food was so disappointing. The Maui tacos have always been one of our favorite items on the menu, but not only was there a minuscule amount of fish, it was so dry, and the flour tacos were so stale, and tough, they were inedible. Had I been a manager, that food would have never made the it out of the kitchen. It's really too bad the current owners have allowed this to happen to a once great restaurant. Cactus Flower has never disappointed us. Always delicious and excellent service. We go often during the month we spend in Navarre Beach.

I've always loved this cactus flower and they always have the best food, but I will tell you what just happened to us.. we had a late game in Navarre and didn't want fast food, so we looked up what time they close and their site said 9PM. When we arrived at 8:27PM we saw two other tables seated, walked up to the host and without letting us say anything he says "I'm sorry my kitchen staff has already started shutting the kitchen down". There were TWO of us and already two other tables in the middle of meals. Not great service and definitely not truthful when they had another 33 minutes of staying open. We won't be going back and now we are driving home for 1.5 hours hungry. read more

We were on vacay, or at least as much as a visit to one's in-laws can be. Went to one of our favorite local Mexican restaurants, The Cactus Flower Cafe. It's good, solid Mexican-American food. I can't in good conscience give it five stars because it's not real Mexican cuisine. Example: They use American food service standard-issue tortilla chips - I watched them getting the boxes off the shelf in the rear of the restaurant. Also: the Chile relleno was the size of a dinner plate, overstuffed with cheese and shredded chicken, with more of a corn flour coating than a traditional light and airy coating. Delicious, tasty, and portioned for the typical American, meaning four times the size it should be. Honestly, it covered 2/3 of a full size dinner plate. Good but... not authentic. God, how I miss the street food vendors around the Perisur transit terminal in Southeast Mexico City. But I digress. The food was tasty with nice Mexican flavors. The salsa was arguably the best part of the meal. They had a small bite cheese-stuffed chimichanga -type appetizer. It didn't know what it wanted to be. The cheese and beans were mixed together into a brownish inner mass. Again, tasty, but not sure what they were going for. This is a place that you need to set your expectations. If you're expecting traditional Mexican, you'll be disappointed. Full, but disappointed. If you're going for flavors and standard Mexican-American fare, then this place is freaking awesome. read more

Some of the best Cal-Mex I've ever had, of not the best. Okay, it's the only Cal-Mex I've ever had but it's pretty darn delicious. Been here twice now, both times I've had the Chimichanga, the first time I had it with the fiesta chicken and the second was with shreaded chicken. It was stuffed full of chicken and cheese both times. Sides were Spanish rice and beans. Our service was outstanding, something to be expected from our Navarre, I wish all restaurants in town had the quality of service. From the moment we were greeted at the door (short 10 minute wait) to our last beverage we were treated well (both visits, lunch and dinner). Every trip we take to Navarre we HAVE to eat here. It is THAT GOOD! I love the grilled mahi tacos, but the last several times I've been they have been out of the grilled mahi. Don't eat here if you have a gluten allergy. I realized half way through the meal when my head and stomach started hurting that I had been glutened. I asked the server and yes, there is four in the cheese sauce. The food was great, everyone at our table was very pleased with what they got and the portions were great. Came in with La Familia for dinner. Didn't have a reservation but only waited about 10 minutes to be seated. Hostess was very friendly and we were seated at a corner table. Place was packed on a Friday afternoon. Our server, Maria, was very personable, knowledgeable and efficient. She brought us waters, salsa and chips. We were hungry so we probably got about three baskets of chips and salsa-very good. We decided on starting off with some guacamole as an appetizer and my son and I ordered a Wine Margarita carafe--very tasty and refreshing! :-) We ordered a chimichanga entree, the Mahi Mahi Taco Entree, and the Blue Crab Quesadilla Special (which came with a cup of the tortilla soup). We ordered the chimi-dog kids meal for my granddaughter. Everything came out within 10 minutes. Good size portion, the right temperature and very tasty. It is a rare thing for my husband to truly enjoy Mexican food other than his mom's or mine, but Cactus Flower Cafe made the mark. We didn't give it a 5 star for a couple of reasons. The chips are pretty sad BUT are paired with some of the best and freshest salsa I've ever had in a restaurant. The queso is in no need of the rue they attempt to make it with. Perhaps if they cooked the flour longer it would work, but it doesn't. However, the flavor is spot on. Now for the good stuff. The Mahi Mahi Tacos are like a party in your mouth - literally. The flavor is off the charts, mostly in part by this heavenly sauce the put in them. My husband had the Chile relleno and his eyes glazed over a bit when he bit into the chicken filling. It reminded him of his mom's chicken. This is a must visit. Just stay away from the queso and endure the chips because the salsa makes it worth it. read more
