Really cool shop! We were driving out to Joshua Tree and saw this big sign that said "Dig your own cactus, 79 cents" or something like that and made a note to stop by on the way home. Very glad we did, the shop is like a mix of a nursery, garden, and home decor store. Besides having a huge variety of plants and cacti, the entire property itself is very pleasant to walk around. There's an outdoor area with a waterfall koi pond where the larger plants are, while there are two covered greenhouses with the smaller plants. Inside there were two different rooms which sold a variety of homegoods. They had some really good smelling soap bars, if I ever go back I would consider buying a soap. And yes, the sign for 79 cents dig your own cactus is 100% true and not a bait and switch. There is a huge variety of these baby cacti of all types and you use tongs to dig them out and either put them into a cardboard box or you can buy pots there. The staff is really friendly and helpful. I ended up buying these two little cacti and they're doing really well! If you want to buy larger more mature plants the prices go up depending on how big the plant is, and there's also some really unique plants. They even had a Joshua tree seedling which looked like a blade of grass, apparently it can 7-10 years (if I recall correctly) for a Joshua Tree to grow into something that resembles a Joshua Tree. Even if you don't plan on buying any plants, it's a cool place to come and browse and who knows, maybe you'll be like me and end up buying some plants. read more

As you drive by on the way to Joshua Tree National Park, you pass by a large sign that reads, "Dig your own cactus." Stop to dig your own cactus, but stay to browse through all the other varieties of cacti and succulents that they offer! The owners and workers here are all really friendly and knowledgeable about all of the plants. I went home with a cat's paw succulent and a needs cactus, and they gave me advice on how to re-pot and care for both. This really cute space is a great little stop in Joshua Tree! I saw this place from a YoutTube video and saw that they have a"dig your own cactus" store and let me tellllll you! It's so cute and this place feels like a hidden gem that you have to visit if you're traveling around this area! I drove from Orange County and it was my first time going to Joshua Tree National Park, taking my friends who came up from Norcal too. This spot was a great stop to get out of the car during my 3 hour drive to Joshua Tree. The market is about 40 minutes before you enter the Joshua Tree National Park. Super cheap and everything's super cute! Only downside was that it was super hot because I went during peak heat in the summer but heat is temporary and memories last a lifetime! Yup. We loved it. Living in Seattle and visiting this zone 9 area we decided on choosing a cactus we could grow in our houses. So we had to search their entire cactus menagerie to make sure we didn't miss anything. It was so fun! There are so many beautiful cactus's and so many different types of spines that will make your day very, horribly bad if they poke you! We looked at them all. In the end I chose a succulent and my friend chose a little Barrell cactus. The very nice clerk packed them in a box for us and we transported them to our homes with no damage. Besides many, many different types of cactus's, they also have some very nice metal art. I thought about purchasing one of their metal ocotillos, but in the end I realized I'd have to have it shipped so I skipped it. We also met both of the resident cats, they are sweet and let us pet them. Awww.... I got my cat fix. There are also 3 hens pecking around. They didn't let us get very close, but they added to the atmosphere. I'd recommend this little nursery to anyone who loves cactus's. It's big enough to find what you want, but not so big that it feels overwhelming. The staff is friendly too. read more

Things are about to get prickly. Sorry I had to! If you are driving from 29 palms/Joshua tree or visiting joshua tree/29 palms I highly recommend you stop by this amazing cactus mart. Although it's called cactus mart, they have much more from garden decor, supplies, succulents, and other trees/plants. When you visit you'll see the adorable chicken that roams around freely! This time we didn't see the kitties (Sundance & butch) because there was a lot of noise and people due to an event they were hosting called Cactus fest! There was live music, which was really good, and a flower crown vendor who made the most beautiful crowns! I bought one for my cat Haha They even had a vendor selling food in the back. Such a fun event. If they have it next year I'll be back. Mini cactus: Dig your own cactus for .59 cents. You can add a mini pot for $1.50. They have the cutest packing of you get a dozen. They have an egg carton with their logo for $2. You don't have to get a dozen to get it. Fill it with however many you want! read more

This nursery is an abso. If you're going to/ from Joshua tree, I'd recommend making a pit stop at this eclectic nursery . Cactus Mart has a unique selection of cacti , garden art , and miscellaneous goodies to take home . All of the plants are sold at the reasonable price considering the rarity and wide variety of the plants . Ive been to many nurseries in Southern California , and this one has to be my favorite. I regret not getting more plants and am looking forward to my next trip here. Update : 2 weeks later ! I've been dreaming about cactus mart since I left , I bugged my boyfriend to drive me 1h 30 m to get here . I made sure I purchased enough cactuses for every month . I'm so glad I was able to stop by! I couldn't resist getting one of each of the cacti that were available! .79 cents for each one. Soil and various sizes of pots were available if you wanted to repot your cacti there! If you get the chance definitely explore, it's a lot bigger than it seems! In one of the back corners there's a small butterfly garden with a gazebo if you wanted to sit and relax. A few steps away there's a tortoise, it was adorable! In another section there were goats and I believe a goat antelope. When you go to check out, Butch, the cat loves pets! So be sure to give him some love. We caught a glimpse of the other cat Sundance walking around. Can't wait to go back and see if there's any new cacti! read more

Customer service needs improvement. I go here many times a month and today there was a worker who ive never seen who gave me a hard time with the "79 cent dig your own" I looked thru the ones up front which looked like they were struggling, so I went to the back area (where I always go everytime, with permission) but today, this man told me , no. I asked why if i pick the ones in back every other time before and he said because people make a mess and that area is where they are still rooting.. the ones I asked about were definitely not rooting. The ones in back look more healthy and alive than the ones in the front that they want me to choose from.. maybe pay more attention to the ones up front and I wont go to the back. It seemed super petty and made me feel unwelcome. Been going here for 9 years steady and live across the street. I will be ordering my cactus supply from an out of the area nursery from now on. read more

Awesome little roadside stop, a must visit on your way to Joshua Tree. They have a great assortment of cacti, but so much more...art gallery, gift shop, a great food stand, even gardening and landscaping supplies. Stopped by on way to Joshua tree park. Loved the art, koi pond and all the plants. Very nicely displayed and lovingly tended to. Had a bunch of questions on proper maintenance and upkeep of cacti, learned a lot and picked up some new ideas. Rafe was a patient and helpful helper without a hint of attitude or condescension. This place is freaking adorable!!!! I would have never found this place if I didn't watch heyclaire on YouTube. Although the sign outside says "dig your cactus for 59 cents", you aren't really digging up a cactus but taking it from a plastic square thing and putting it in another. The ceramic pots are around $1.60 but you do not need to buy the ceramic pots. They provide plastic egg carton type of things for your cactus. The cactus that you "dig up" are baby cactus. They sell bigger ones in 2" pots for I believe $3-5. The selection is amazing!! They also have succulents that range from $2-7 for 2"-4" pots. The pricing is based on pot size for the most part. My mom, sister, and I bought a bunch of cacti and succulents to build ourselves some terrariums. The woman working was able to answer my questions and super helpful. She was able to tell me what type of soil I should get, how each plant grows, and how tall each plant gets. read more

A very great experience!!! One of the highlights of my visit to Joshua Tree. The staff was so lovely, helpful, and sweet, it honestly made the experience so much more special. This place seems to be very popular for their 59 cent "dig your own cactus" special, which is what caught my eye on the way back to LA. A disclaimer, you aren't actually digging your own cactus, but more like taking a pair of tongs and potting them on your own. (a tiny pot is $1). Besides the tiny 59 cent cacti, there are so many other bigger cacti and plants for sale so be prepared to explore the whole area when you visit. This is a very charming and adorable space to take something small and lovely back home after a trip to the desert. If you're ever visiting Joshua tree or in the area, do not skip this spot! I cannot say enough about this place. I would buy all of this inventory if i was local. From mini cacti, to amazing varieties of larger cacti, desert flowers and shrubs. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Don't even get me started on the shop cat, the chickens, and a tortoise that roam freely. They are happy and taken well-care of. Just don't skip this place. We came here looking for a small Joshua Tree. We arrived right as they opened and was greeted by a friendly guy who apparently did everything. He didn't think they had a Joshua Tree, but he went away for a few minutes and came out holding a small pot. Hooray! We got lots of information about sprouting seedlings and growing Joshua Trees. I went on a small Joshua Tree camping trip with some friends and made a U-turn when seeing that you could dig up your own cactus for 59 cents ! The 59 cent cacti are teeenieeee tinyyyyy but they also have a large selection of many other kinds of plants that you can get for a bigger price. I regret leaving this place without having purchased anything other than the "dig your own" deal. The couple approached us and explained how to dig up the cacti and offered to plant them for us. They had adorable cats and chickens roaming the area. All-in-all I'm glad we stopped by ! Only small reason for why I didn't give them 5 stars is because I know of a place by LA that does the same thing for wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy cheaper. Created a desert landscape that looks amazing. What I want to point out are the Ocatillo's that I bought look at how they bloom. When I saw them I wanted them and felt I could give them a good home. They where very large, and the staff made a contraption that would protect the Ocatillo as I drove. They loaded them up and they arrived very happy. I kept them in their pots for a few months and just moved them to the spot they would be planted and then would move them to the back. I wanted to create a Desert landscape in the front yard. Once I felt they would "take" I planted them. Most of the year they look like dead sticks but oh when they bloom it's very romantic. They get all green and produce these flowers. They are very angry plants they do not want to be called, texted, watered etc. They want to be left alone and admired from way over there. I was able to grab a quick video and even then one tried to stick me and said some very nasty things to me. I don't speak Ocatillo so I just smile and nod.
