Don't buy any fruit trees from them. There's no warranty. I paid over $200.00 each for an apple and a peach tree. The peach tree died. The apple tree is doing ok. When we went to the nursery with the receipt, they said no warranty. I'll never do business with them again. We even had pictures of the peach tree which barely grew at all. Way way way too expensive! I suggest you go down to the Wholesale nurseries in Riverside off Adams for example, where you can get iceberg roses for $12 other varieties for $12. So, first off, ALL of the nurseries in BB are crazy expensive. That said, Hunter's is probably the least expensive. They are very much into plants & are a great resource for those of us low-landers on BB tolerant plants. There is a broad variety of flowers, shrubs and trees. I especially appreciated the mountain appropriate perennials, which might be a little easier on my wallet. Annuals look great but I'm against planting yearly. read more

I have bought several times from this place before and the service when Maria was there was amazing. Last month i went there ordering 5 trees and i was told it is on the truck to be delivered to them but not sure by when they will receive it since it is coming from Oregon and i was told i will get a call from them the next day for delivery status. I went there today and i was told that the trees aren't available and i was called a liar since they never promised me anything. Knowing that i offered to pay the full amount for the trees when i placed the order and i was told they knew me well and there is no need until they get the trees. The lady was unprofessional. Horrible service and owners don't honor their products!! We' purchased lilac plants that died right after we planted and owners will not exchange or refund. The plants were very expensive to begin with but we needed to add to our landscaping prior to the winter season. I usually find what I'm looking for, and the most informed employees are usually circling near the main office or out on the tree section. What some people see as "ignoring customers" is usually a combination of letting people look first, taking care of the plants so they have the best chance of survival (this environment can shift quickly between hot and cold and frozen), and language challenges, because they employ good people who care about the plants. That said, there are always people who can answer questions near the office or out in the Trees section. It's very low pressure (unlike another nursery in this town that swarms you, pressures you, then won't honor their guarantee when a plant dies within the first year). read more

I bought 2 Asclepius curassavica "perennial" plants from Hunters this past week. We had a frost and both died. I looked up the climate zone for area code 92315 and we are 7a. I looked up the climate zone for the plants. Asclepius curassavica , and they are a zone 8. They say it was an act of nature and will not replace the plants, wrong they are the wrong plants for our climate zone. They seem to have a difficult time understanding that this plant will not survive in Big Bear because these "acts of nature" are common in climate zone 7a. They are selling plants above 7a that will not survive in Big Bear. They did say they had a lot of plants die after the frost, that's because these plants do not belong in Big Bear. Buyer beware find another nursery. read more

One female staff person even walked the entire premise with us to discuss our options, answer our questions, and see the full variety of choices for our live Christmas Tree! I called this nursery to have some landscaping done on 12,000 square feet of yard. I am new here on Big Bear. A guy named Tom called me at 6:50 am. I thought it was quite rude, but made an appointment. They sent out a man who wanted to know what my plan was. I told him I wanted some flowers, trees bushes and a small vegetable garden. He told me he can't tell me what to plant without my plan. I told him that is why he came. I thought he would have a plan. Ideas? So, he wants me to put a vegetable garden in the middle of my forest. There is no sun there. I thought he has no idea and why did they send him? I settled for some soil pricing since he had no idea how to give advice to newcomers to this area and was quite unpleasant. He said that he would give me a price on delivery for soil. He would work it up that night. I never heard from him again. It's been more than three weeks. I went to complain to the nursery yesterday. They could not care less. They said they gave some guy my phone number and the rest was up to me. I asked for the owner, I was told he could not care less either. He was not there and has nothing to do with this. I was going to purchase some of their items and thought if they don't care, I don't either and left. They just hand out phone numbers. I am aggravated with myself because I sent a friend to them who spent $200 on plants last month. I don't think they want my money, then complain that business is so bad. I'm going off the hill to get my plants from now on. I don't appreciate them giving out my phone numbers to people for which they are not responsible. That's irresponsible and dangerous. Tom left no card, so I did not know that he was with the nursery I called. read more

Hunter's Nursery is horrible. I went in to try to keep money on the mountain and was given the cold shoulder. There were half a dozen employees and no one acknowledged me. I walked all the way to the cash register area looking for grass seed and no one asked or said one word to me. Total waste of my time. I left and still no one said anything to me. I went down the boulevard towards the village and bought my seed and topper. NOTE TO SELF: Don't bother with Hunter's because the don't care about anything. Can't believe they can stay in business. Hunters Nursery is THE local spot to get all your garden needs. I live here and shop between two different places, but get the best service & selection at Hunters. The guys/nursures (a word I just made up..nurses + nursery) are helpful and can help you out with heavy stuff, picking plants, answering questions.
