Caesar's Tropical Fish has quickly become our favorite fish store! Every time we visit, we're greeted with friendly service, healthy fish and an amazing selection. It's clear that the staff truly care about the animals and want their customers to succeed in the hobby. I especially want to give an honorary shout-out to Pheonix. Every single time we've come in, Pheonix has been incredibly kind, patient and unbelievably knowledgeable. No matter how many questions we have, she takes the time to explain things thoroughly and makes sure we understand what's best for our aquariums. As someone who's still learning, having someone so encouraging and willing to share their expertise has made such a difference. If you're looking for a fish store that genuinely cares about both its customers and its animals, I can't recommend Caesar's Tropical Fish enough. This review is for Caesar's Tropical Fish Factory pond maintenance and cleaning services. I contracted Caesar's to clean my two basin pond and replace the filter media. I was required to give them my credit card information before they would schedule the work. Caesar's technician arrived almost 1 1/2 hours late for our appointment due to overscheduling and did not have time to complete the work. The work he did complete, on the top pond, was fabulous and he was wonderfully pleasant. A second appointment was made to finish the pond cleaning and that technician was late by 45 minutes. He was not aware, by his own admission, the scope of the work he was supposed to perform. He not only didn't complete the contracted work, but also managed to make the newly beautiful top pond look like sewage and unsafe for our koi. When discussing this with Caesar's office manager, I learned that they had already charged my credit card on the day of the first appointment. The legality of this we had to seek help with, but the effect was they removed any leverage we had to get them to come back out a third time to complete the contracted work for which we were charged. The only remedy to this, proffered by the office manger, was a distant appointment to return. When I complained about their business practices, I felt entirely mocked and unheard as the office manager laughed over the phone at me. I looked into my legal options for remedy and found that my first options should be to contact my credit card company to issue a charge back and to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and request their mediation. I did both. My credit card company credited the charge back to my account after their month long attempts to contact Caesar's went unanswered. I entered a detailed complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Their month long attempts to mediate with Caesar's also went unanswered and their rating was subsequently down graded. read more

I bought 2 nerite snails and one african dwarf frog here 2 weeks ago. The snails died within 3 days of adding them to my fully cycled tank that has had zero issues in a year. A week after the snails died my african dwarf frogs started showing signs of illness. One was not doing well but had no visible signs of infection that I noticed, all water perameters were good. The frog passed then 2 of my other african dwarf frogs started showing signs of fungal infection, I tried treating them in a seperate tank but by the time I got the proper treatment both were too far gone. I made a terrible mistake not quarantining but I have introduced fish in the same way multiple times in the past and had zero issues. Do not go to this place or purchase anything from them, they have no qualms about selling diseased animals. While I was in the store 5-10% of all their freshwater tanks were marked as hospital tanks. Then when the employee went to pick out the snails he went through an unusual number of snails (over 20) before handing us the two he thought looked the best. It was an unusual experience and I wish I would've stopped the sale and walked out then. I love supporting small businesses but this place is terrible, you are genuinely better off going to a chain pet store. read more

5 STARS FOR THE OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SELECTION. I am surprised by so many bad reviews. I did not buy fish from them today. Only a set up. Holy smokes! I was NOT expecting the AAA top notch treatment I received today. I am searching for a new fin friend and felt like a Betta was appropriate. Times sure have come along way since we put one in a bowl. I had so many questions and wanted to make sure I was doing everything ethically correct. The sales associate was so patient and literally spent over an hour with me. There is so much to intake and understand. These guys are the fish gurus of the industry. Don't waste your time with the big box pet stores that start with the letter "P" that sell sick fish. (and there are 3 of them in Santa Rosa). Such a vast selection of fish to choose from. I found the store to be clean and fully stocked. So many fish! All of the fish appeared to be happy, clean, healthy and well cared for. There are multiple Koi ponds in the backyard with all sizes of Koi. The associates were also super sweet and let me use their private bathroom for my tiny bursting bladder. read more

Today I went in looking for some plants and shrimp - Kaylee helped me and was super awesome, knowledgeable, and just really fun and enthusiastic. It's really refreshing to go into a place and have someone offer to help you before you even have to ask, and not only that but also seem to enjoy helping you and not be bothered by it. She was super patient with picking out my shrimp that I was very excited about and she even seemed equally as excited about them which was so cute! She also gave me a product suggestion that I hadn't known about, to help my shrimp be healthier - she was not at all judgmental about me not knowing and was just being extra helpful and kind which I (and my shrimp) appreciate so much! I stopped by Caesar's Tropical Fish today. The staff was very pleasant to deal with and the fish both fresh and salt water appeared to be healthy and well cared for. There is not a independent fish store in Petaluma and I had heard about Caesar's and my first impression is that it is a well run, friendly and knowledgeable store. I, unfortunately, do not remember the name of the lady who I interacted with the most, but, she was very professional and pleasant to deal with. So I went there with I used to love this place, recently i went and picked up three smaller fish a couple days later the fish that I specifically bought from their head ache they killed off most of my tank fish I am beyond upset. It cost me so much money and they sold me sick fish also when I was there I could tell the staff member was newer which is totally OK I had no problem if he didn't know the answer he seem to go ask a question but when I noticed that he went up to a lady and asked a question about food the lady was very rude to him I felt so bad for the guy he's learning and he's new he's just trying to make sure he has the right information he even looked down like he was embarrassed that being said I don't think I'll return here I'm so upset that they sold me sick fish and I lost all my fish because of them. read more

Went by today. The lady in the front of the store gave me dangerous information about my fish. She told me that I can add an endless amount of water conditioner to the tank. You cannot. I brushed it off but any person working at the store needs to be more informed. You cannot add an endless amount of water conditioner to any fish tank: this can cause oxygen depletion in the tank and can kill your fish and beneficial bacteria. Very dangerous to tell someone "it doesn't matter how much." And mind you, she answered my question with an attitude like I was stupid for asking. If this employee is reading, do not speak to people with that kind of tone and in the same breath give them false information. That is not only ignorant but embarrassing to your store you work for. Same employee then proceeded to abandon me while helping me to assist other customers walking in the store which is EXTREMELY inconsiderate and rude. And please note, I was the only African American in the store? This is a common experience for black people. Being spoken too with condescension and being treated like our money or time isn't valued when shopping. Anyways, I chose to purchase my products because I needed a container of Fish Stability, and an aquarium background, but it is obvious some of their staff are extremely unfriendly, uninformed and Practice poor customer service. I will note, the lady working in the freshwater fish section who was vacuuming the gravel was super kind and helpful. And the prices are decent, you also would be shopping small if you chose to continue to support. Regardless, I highly recommend Under the Sea in Rohnert Park, I always had great service there and everyone was very honest, kind and truly loves being aquatic specialist. This is the least professional review I've ever written. My comments are not about the actual store but rather something I saw in town. I was getting gas and saw the van for this store so I'm assuming an employee or owner of this store is responsible. They were feeding the homeless out in the cold and dark and not just that, but having conversation human to human. Laughing with them, feeding them, and giving me faith in humanity again. I don't have a reason to shop here but if you do just consider what they're doing for our community. Really grateful for that man's efforts and it shouldn't go unnoticed. read more

I'm so disappointed. We have purchased fish here and that experience was always okay. But I recently went in on a Monday to schedule someone to come out and service the pond. I gave my name was told someone would call me Tuesday or Wednesday. After not hearing anything from them, I called on Friday and was transferred to Justine. She wasn't really friendly, but she explained the process and told me to email photos. Because I was driving I asked her if she would email me, she said no, but would text me the email address right away. She didn't. So, after twice unsuccessfully trying to work with Caesar's, I found someone else local who put me on the schedule right away. All in all, it was unpleasant and disappointing, I won't go back. read more

Always buy my fish from them. There are a lot of knowledgeable people and if they dont know something, always will look it up. Never had a problem with sick fish. Learned a lot from them from when started my first fresh water and now big salt water. Hi, my kids and I purchased a tank and cycled for 10 days, we went to purchase first fish and were encouraged to purchase $150 of fish(6 total). It was not shared that fish were not guaranteed of the tank is within 6 weeks of starting. If I had known, I would have picked much more inexpensive fish. I froze the fish that died within 3 days and brought back to the store with a water sample. I was then brought into a back room where they pointed at a policy I had never seen before and told me they couldn't help replace the fish nor give a credit. This was the first time I heard or saw anything about the policy and when they pointed to my receipt, the policy was torn off. I will never give this store another dollar. And I ask that they train the staff to disclose this information prior to the next poor person who might be steered the wrong direction and lose fish and $$. read more

If i could give zero stars, i would. Do NOT work here. I loved shopping here until I started working, then saw the dark side of this business. Only the senior staff members get any respect, and they will screw you over. I never got to do anything but stand around and dust shelves, nothing else. The owner is two faced, and there is so much sh*t talking between her and the senior staff. They say they have a low turn over of employees and that's simply untrue. And god forbid you get injured, they will not get you the proper help and they won't do state required protocols to get you to a workers comp clinic. DO NOT WORK HERE. It seems great and fun at first, but a simple week in you'll see how toxic that work environment is. Lynn (the owner) doesn't care about anything but the money and her senior staff. She allows unvaccinated staff and customers to go around not wearing masks as well. The cherry on top is, I've experienced the staff being racist towards customers, telling me to "no guarantee" (meaning they will refuse giving the customers money back if they want to do a return) their purchase because they didn't speak english well and the only fluent spanish speaker there wasn't working, although I speak enough spanish to understand the wants and needs of the customer. The bad reviews about this place seem extremely accurate. Disrespectful, god complex having senior staff and an owner that doesn't even talk to customers if they don't know her by name. If you want a job that'll treat you and the customers well, avoid Ceasars. They will simply waste your time and make you out to be the bad guy. read more

This use to be my go to fish store. They use to be wonderful. But after many years the prices have gone up, the staff is not as knowledgeable as they use to be. They tell you they ordered an item when they didn't. I called them today and got someone who shouldn't be answering the phone. I asked about my order and all I got was (sounded stoned) "huh," very confused. I had to call back to get someone else who told me we never ordered anything when last week they told me they did. So I'm sorry but after years of going here. **update** Tried to give them another chance. But once again they failed. The person who helped me didn't know what they were doing. By all means, go and look at the pretty fish. But if you are serious about purchasing a system, or becoming a hobbyist and needing a service relationship, go anywhere else. After spending 4 or 5 thousand dollars at Ceasar's in the past 3 years on our salt water tank and all it entails, and bending over backwards to avoiding upsetting the passive aggressive manager, I've had enough. I'm an extremely patient person, but she is impossible to deal with on even a simple matter. This comes from 3 years of experience... not just one "must have been a bad day" event. Even if she CAN help, she will find pleasure in telling you she cannot. Such a shame, as all of the rest of the staff is lovely. Since I've discovered there is no way around this person... literally no other person to deal with, (I'm told), it implies "the sale" is all Ceasar's is after, and the customer can stay or go. Don't let the door hit you on your way out. We have opted to go. Aquarium Creations North Bay is our tank service from now on. There are other options, people. Good ones. Ceasar's has been operating as though there is not. Bad decision. Maybe now I won't have a fish friend die the day after every cleaning. The owner should take note of their management issue, as I am not even remotely alone in my grievance here. This unpleasant 'I wonder what mood she'll be in today" style will quickly ruin a business. I knew better than go back, but I did. 5 of the 6 fish died in a couple weeks. Wasn't about to go back each time one died. So took it as a loss. Months before, I had an awful snail infestation from their plants. So, they sold me an assassin snail to rid others. I then had an infestation of 2 kinds of snails. Completely emptied tank and replaced gravel, threw out plants and changed to plastic. Now have had 4 snails again that had to have come from water with new fish. I consistently got contradictory "advice" which, again, should have taught me to not go back. Last time in to get the now dead fish, the girl was so knowledgeable, I thought I was good to go. I'll bet she got smart and left. So, please be aware of all the bad reviews and stay away. Shame on me for not taking my own advice. read more

We had an OK experience here, but I am a little upset about some things. We purchased 4 goldfish (of various sorts). One seemed a little sluggish and almost "special," but the others seemed fine. We went back the following week to ask some questions about this one. Since it was the most expensive, I was wondering if it's family tree only had one branch. What I found is that 2 out of 3 tanks that our fish came from were now "not ready for adoption" or whatever verbiage they used. The tank my "special" fish came from was down to only 2 fish left in it. When I asked what was going on, trying to figure out what they were treating with and what they had diagnosed, they wouldn't answer me. They were like dodging the question. When I inquired about maybe the fish was inbred, the person totally talked down to me and said a bunch of blah blah blah, using a whole lot of words to FINALLY say in a VERY round about way, that essentially the fish was probably inbred. Okay I'm not stupid. Just say they're inbred! I also clearly saw signs of ich in one of the other tanks and inquired about it, noting that come to think of it maybe I did see some salt-like spots on my fish from that tank. Well, then I got a lecture about how you shouldn't treat a tank unless you're certain you know what is in it, and I needed to get a water sample for them, and I needed to bring in a picture of the fish, and they just would not tell me anything, when CLEARLY there was already something going on. Clearly there was SOME reason all these fish were suddenly not ready for purchase when last week they were just fine. Would not admit that they were treating or share what they were treating with. Then! Like an idiot! I listened to her when she tried to tell me that I was probably just feeding the wrong food and so their bellies were full of air. That's why the fish is sluggish. Why don't you buy our overpriced seaweed? That will make this all better. Ugh! Why did I listen to her and buy more food from them? I have been feeding goldfish at home for years and none of the fish have ever had any problems with air in their bellies because of the food I'm using. Well, Mr. Inbred died a couple of days later. And a few days after that one of my fish that had been alive for years also died. This happened well before his time, although he was technically a feeder fish, so, maybe one could argue he'd lived a long life. In the end, the other fish are doing fine but I was very unhappy with the way I was talked to and treated and with the overall lack of information from them. I wasn't there to blame anybody or get my money back I just wanted to know how I should treat my tank since I clearly caught something nasty from them. I ended up adding aquarium salt and crossing my fingers. I only lost the two fish, but I will definitely not go back to this store. Gave two stars because three out of four of the fish did live and are looking great. read more

I have many fond memories of coming to Caesar's as a kid when my Dad for many years had a few fish tanks. So when I recently decided to get a three gallon tank of my own, I wanted to check out Caesar's for a betta fish to go inside because I wasn't having much luck finding one I liked at my local pet stores. Caesar's was just as I remembered it from 20-25 years ago and hasn't changed much. They did move a room of saltwater fish that they did have on the right side of the store to the left to go along with the freshwater fish, but other than that it remains unchanged. They have a small selection of tank decor down the first aisle and every kind of fish food and tank conditioners and solutions that you would ever need. They have a great selection of tanks (both large and small) along with refrigerated fish food and faux and live plants. They have a great selection of both fresh water and saltwater fish and all their fish and tanks that they are kept in are in great condition. Even though I was only looking for a betta fish, I enjoyed walking around and looking at everything else they had. They have a third room of fish filled with real rare fish and corals some of which I had never seen before. It was really cool! I was able to find a betta fish that I liked from their cool betta fish display up front. They had a really good selection of betta fish within at least 40-50 fish to choose from. It's been almost a month now and my fish (Ridley) is doing great! I would definitely come back again when in town. read more

Well, the koi that I bought there a month ago, the one that brought ich back to my pond, is now dying. I've lost 3 koi since I brought this one home. Today I tried my best to save it with a salt bath, but I fear it will be dead by morning. $100 down the drain, or in my compost rather. Along with the other 3 koi that were perfectly healthy before I brought this one home. It's possible I will loose my entire school, but I hope not. Never ever will I shop here again. When I talked to my kids dad, James about it, he said, they don't care about their fish. He worked there for 15 years, so I believe he knows what he's talking about. I only wish I had talked to him before I put this $100 koi in my pond. I know it's my fault for not quarantining it first, but I really thought I was buying from a reputable source. It's really turned me off from my pond hobby, after a month of medicating sick fish. Sorry but you guys suck! These fish become family. I even had some that would eat out of my hand. They get one extra star because they keep about a third of their betta fish in tiny tanks, but the others are only in little cups with lids, sitting in their own waste. They can constantly see other male betta fish, I'm sure that isn't good for them because they are so aggressive. Additionally they have constantly given false information to my sister about fish when she bout platys, tetras, and betta fish from them. Their failure to inform us of a filter spout protecter resulted in the death of my sisters one year old betta fish, and they told her to feed her silver tip tetras a few pellets once a day when they should be eating as much as they can eat in a minute twice a day. They also let her put them in a tank with other fish that they weren't compatible with. read more

We drove all the way from Marin to Caesars Fish to buy some frag and coral since we just got finished cycling our 150gal reef tank. We were greeted and offered help, but decided to walk around and shop some more. They have a good selection and the staff are helpful. Today's experience: There was a customer taking up so much time and in our way by the coral section that we opted to wait until the employee finished with her. While we were waiting, an employee approached us and said we needed to move our truck because it's taking two spots and that their parking lot was small. Small?? There's a lot of space and it wasn't even busy. Therefore, we left without buying what we initially came up for. Complete waste of time. From a business owner to another, you don't tell a paying customer to move their vehicle. read more

Caesar's is a joy to visit- their selection of freshwater and tropical fish is marvelous, and they appear to carry most aquarium necessities. That said, they really need to train their employees better; their ignorance nearly killed my fish on two separate occasions. After noticing some fresh growths on my blue betta's front fins, I approached the girl at the counter and asked what they might be and how I could treat them. She immediately dismissed my concerns as needless worrying. "They're probably just little warts," she said. "You know, some humans have freckles and warts and others don't... It's the same way with fish." When asked why these "warts" had appeared suddenly, she just shrugged it away and said that if the fish was still eating, he was probably healthy. Well, he eventually stopped eating, clamped all his fins, and went into hiding. When I was able to flush him out, I saw that he had developed a pale film over his body and more lesions along his tail. I purchased some Betta Fix but it did nothing. Finally, I discovered via Google that his symptoms were consistent with fungal infection, so I once more visited Caesar's to pick up the right medicine. At the counter, I was greeted by a different girl who tried to push Betta Fix, and then another similar product, even though I'd already specifically told her what I believed the problem to be. I insisted on buying a cure for fungus and nothing else, so she recommended a powder by API. It worked wonders; my betta has regained his appetite and his glorious color. But seriously, Caesar's... your employees should be a bit more familiar with fish diseases; they ought to be more helpful towards finding a cure than a random Google search! read more
