This was the worst eating experience I had in Paris and Café de Flore is straight up a tourist trap.
It really bums me out because I had fantasized about eating here since I was a brooding high school student smoking cloves, drinking espresso, and reading Camus. The last time I was in Paris, the friends I travelled with would only humor me to eat at one place on my literary wish list, so I waited until my next trip to Paris to go to Café de Flore.
We arrived after the lunch rush and we were seated at the worst table possible, which was a bit of a general problem in Paris. I noticed that once it was realized that I was not a Parisian, we would sometimes get sat either right at the kitchen entrance, or right at the bathroom entrance. If it was not crowded, I would ask to move, and one time this meant being reseated literally under the coat rack. Space is a premium at these cafes but some tables just should not exist. I was at the table that should not exist. It was the table touching the kitchen entrance where you can watch waiters mixing bottles of wine together with funnels and generally making a mess of the profession. Every single waiter's ass working that day rubbed against my back even though my stomach was pressed into the table. I am not a big guy but this made me feel like some kind of giant stuffed into a seat.
In addition, the ambiance was chaos. Our waiter spilled a full cup of milk mostly into the woman next to me's Goyard purse and onto her fur coat but it also got my wool sweater. Wool doesn't smell great when it gets wet but when it gets wet with milk, I almost just took it off and dropped it on the ground where I sat. The waiter made no apology to myself or the lady and simply wiped some of the milk off her Goyard bag. She was so upset it outshined my anger but once that happened, I just wanted to leave.
The food was forgettably mediocre, and my wife agreed. She usually has a good attitude about stuff but even from the inside booth seat, she was deeply harshed. THERE IS NO REMNANT of the magic that this place once was. I would have complained if I wasn't kind of already expecting to get sucked into this tourist hell trap.
If you want to be cute and get that gram, get a chocolate chaud, sit outside, smoke a cigarette, get the gram, and then go to a place that isn't designed to rip off tourists. If you are Parisian, why are you reading this, and why would you EVER go here!? ...but also Hi. read more
