Café Panis has a lovely location across the street from Notre Dame. We wanted to do a quick sit down lunch and this spot fit the bill. We didn't want anything too fancy so we settled on some expensive café au laits along with croque-monsieurs and madames. They're grilled ham and cheese sandwiches if you haven't had one before (madames include a fried egg). Our waiter was a lot of fun- a little flirty but a funny guy to talk to none the less. I practiced my very basic french language skills with him. I clearly can't get the accent right but it's fun to try. Bonjour / Bonsoir my friends! This café definitely caters to droves of tourists visiting the surrounding area so the prices were higher than normal but oh well... What do you expect when you get to look out the window, sip your café au lait and realize you're across the street from one of the most beautiful churches in the world?! Too touristy for me to return to but I'm glad I checked it out either way... Actually on second thought, maybe I'd grab another expensive coffee here- it's lovely for people watching in a beautiful section of Paris. read more

This was the worst restaurant my former love and I endured for dinner during our former glory days of immense happiness in Paris, France. Furthermore on being the worst restaurant, it is the only time a waiter was snotty to us as Americans. The onion soup was so-so and the steak was rare. My former love specifically requested to have his steak cook "medium" but the waiter misinterpreted as "saignant" which is French for rare. We skipped dessert and opt for crepes elsewhere to compensate this bad experience. read more

We stopped off here for coffee and desserts. The service is very fast and friendly. The space is pretty large, but does not get overly crowded. Our waiter spoke English and various other languages. Prices are fair for the area. I had the crepe flambé and my husband had the apple tart. Both desserts were very delicious! I highly recommend if you are in the area! read more

We had some time to spare after the Notre Dame before we had to head to our dinner reservations so we decided to stop here and people watch and have some drinks! The owner was so sweet - he opened the wall up so that it was like we were indoor but outdoor at the same time! Luckily for us, the weather was perfect! We had wine, tea and a bottle of the sassy cider! We loved it! They were brought out these French puff pastries for us while we drank and replaced them with fresh ones as we sat there! We didn't want to spoil our appetites but the charcuterie plate looked amazing from other people who ordered it. I did end up getting their escargots and they were flavorful and delicious! I loved the experience here and would like to come back and try their menu if I ever venture to these parts of Paris again! read more

The coveted "corner window seat" with the magazine-spread backdrop of the Parisian landmark can be attained fairly easily if you show up for lunch at around 11 o'clock, when the rest of the tourists are wandering around the cathedral itself. Location, Location, Location. You won't have the best meal of your life here, but given the amazing location across from Notre Dame, I was surprised at the quality of the food, service and prices. We started off with the charcuterie platter and it was both huge and delicious, all for a very reasonable price. Then came the flank steak and gratin, both of which were descent. The location simply couldn't be MORE beautiful - set on the Seine, looking across the bridge to the...NOTRE DAME. In Spring, I almost couldn't imagine a more beautiful setting, as the trees are in full pink and white blossom. Unreal. Sincerely, if THAT weren't enough, the food is delicious. We ordered a vegetarian meal which included a vegetable salad (warm and cold combined) and a butternut squash soup. Too, their French Onion Soup: also good. The BEST though - the very BEST - was this amazing, enormous macaron filled with REAL raspberries and cream (See Photos). I imagine there's a name for it but for now, I'll call it Heaven. So we ordered "Heaven" to go, walked across the street to this gorgeous little park and promptly stuffed our faces with it. We almost died. It was SOOOO good that I immediately RECROSSED the street to purchase another. This was - BY FAR - my favorite dessert in the entire two week period that I did nothing but eat. It is a tourists spot, so it gets busy. The cafe offers good foods for sure though. So our service was actually good (wasn't as bad as I've read or heard). He did make a mistake though, which is we asked for omelette with fries, but he brought us a vegetarian omelette. We actually didn't complain because the omelette was great! Nice cafe right across the street from Norte Dame. Free fast wifi - I was able to upload some photos far faster than at Starbucks. When I finished the delicious escargot (which come with snail tongs and a snail fork), my waiter politely pointed out that I had left the best part on my plate - the garlic and pesto oil inside the shells, which he recommended soaking up with the fresh bread. My 3 yo son has severe food allergies. I specifically informed this and ordered the beef patty and potatoes (not fries since they told me it is fried in nut oil). I was told these were safe. As soon as my son started eating the beef patty he started itching and got hives. I told the manager just as an fyi to be careful of cross contamination since allergies can be fatal but he just said the patty was safe and just refused to listen. The waiter was kind and apologized and did not charge my son's dish. The chef needs to be more careful and the manager's attitude needs a check. Service was a bit slow, food was ok. Quaint cafe near the Cathedral of Notre Dame. I ordered a hot chocolate with 3 small desserts. The hit chocolate came with melted hot (dark) chocolate in a cup and a small carafe of hot milk to mix together. The three mini pastries were a creamy apricot or guava type mousse, an apricot bundt cake, and a raspberry cheesecake. They were all delicious! read more

We ate at the very popular Cafe Panis while touring Notre Dame for the day in Paris. You can't beat the location - right across the street from Notre Dame, which provides for some great (and interesting) people-watching if you sit outside, which we did. It's a surreal experience to be sipping your coffee at a Parisian sidewalk cafe while staring directly at one of the most famous and beautiful cathedrals in the world. I had a croque monsieur and a green salad with a light olive oil based dressing. Both were fabulous. I washed it down with an Orangina, which I was addicted to during my stay in Paris. The waiter was okay. His demeanor was what I typically came across from the locals throughout Paris. Once I used my high school/some college French to talk to him, he seemed to brighten up a little. NOTE: if you go to Paris for the first time, make an effort to know a few key phrases in French to use on the locals there. You find you get much better service and attitudes. Even if your French is not that good, they appreciate the effort you make to communicate with them in their language. I'm deducting a star because I think we paid much more than what a person should have to pay for what is essentially just a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. However, you're eating at a quintessential Parisian cafe next to THE Notre Dame. Should I really have been THAT surprised by the price? Probably not. read more

Mon Dieu... how can they get crepes wrong in Paris? Went here to meet friends here after service at the church across the way... can't remember it's name, but it was kinda big and had gargoyles and stuff on it. I should have asked the hunchback ringing the bells what it was called. Alas, this place obviously banks on being right next this prominent cathedral. It catches all those that pass by and really only delivers a giant sized check. Well, there is that and the feeling of leaving unfulfilled. The food is so-so, but wow... even a dollop of whipped cream for the crepes was like $4. Way too pricey and not that good. There is a small place near by that was super inexpensive and had amazing crepes. I'll post a review for it once I find it. In the meantime, keep walking if you're looking for a decent crepe without having to cash in your 401k. read more

We stopped here before Mass at Notre Dame. The food was good and served promptly. My son ordered a burger, of all things, and it was delicious! I had the onion soup which was good. My daughter had a dessert crepe, which was also very good. One thing I could never get used to while in Europe is that the restaurants charge a lot for the soda and water. Refills were never free. We managed to dine during a slow night, so we were greeted immediately at the door and brought to a table with a spectacular view of Notre Dame and the bustling street. Since this restaurant was located next to the Notre Dame and it was raining, we decided to have dinner here. In the past, I have had pretty bad experiences at restaurants near touristy areas but, this place wowed me. We were immediately seated next to a window as we watched the world pass us by. The name of our waiter slips my mind but, he was very kind and attentive. My friend craved a cheeseburger and I wanted something simple and tasty. I decided on the Grilled Chicken marinated in lemon and ginger. Both were excellent choices! My friend's cheeseburger was one of the best burgers I ever had! While my chicken was moist, flavorful and the ratatouille that came with it was amazing! The location right across from the Notre Dame suggests that this place would be an overpriced tourist trap, but this adorable little corner cafe with a funny name in English turned out to be wonderful. The service was actually very friendly, a rarity for Americans travelling in France, and I absolutely loved their croque madame for the incredibly thick and savory layer of cheese. We stopped into this busy restaurant for lunch on our one rainy day in Paris to fuel up before going to climb Notre Dame. Even though it was busy we were able to get a table with me right away. We got a seat close to the window, so we had an awesome view during our lunch as it's directly across the street from the church. The meals are reasonably priced, especially for that area of Paris. I had an open face toasted sandwich that had slices of tomato and mozzarella so it was kind of like a pizza sandwich, it was pretty good. I also added on fries and a side salad to complete the meal. Our server was fairly warm and very fast, she did a good job of handling a lot of tables and didn't mind doing some rejigging when the place got crowded and there were big groups. Tasted as if it was quickly reheated. The croque madame was quickly reheated as if the cheese was melted on the spot it would be bubbling and have a nice crust to it. I came home from dinner and immediately wrote this review because it was that bad. Food was average and a little overpriced, but I expected that from the location. What I did not expect was the terrible service. The service tonight was the worst I have ever experienced in my life. The server not only ignored us, but disregarded our requests to order and for the check. It was so bad that the table next to us commented on how long it took for them to get our order. The overpriced, average food is not worth the horrible treatment by the staff, no matter how hungry you are. The only reason this restaurant gets a star is for the view of notre dame. read more

Cafe Panis will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only because the food was simple and good, my guy proposed to me across the street at Notre Dame. I can go on and on how that amazing that day was, but I'm here to talk about the food. My fiance and I had just toured Notre Dame and it was eatin' time. Bad. Located right next to the Notre-Dame de Paris, this restaurant offers, in my opinion, the best crepes I've ever tasted. Perhaps I haven't found the best crepe yet, but for now, I'm going to say this. Their main courses were great, and styled very similarly to other French restaurants. The service was great there, and I'm confused as to why some of the other reviewers felt that the service was terrible. We ate there two times in total while in France, and the first waiter was funny, kind, and tried to communicate in English with us, since we knew little French. The second waiter didn't try as hard with speaking English, but he was polite, and kind. You can argue that the view of the reconstruction of the Notre Dame is a plus, but I'm not here to rate it on location. Bottom line: 1. Food was decent, overpriced for the quality of the omelet I received. Chef knows what he's doing. 2. Service was awful. Every waiter has his busy days, I can emphasize, but I was literally the first to sit, but took half an hour to ask me what I wanted to order. Getting the check to pay the bill took even longer.
