We enjoyed our dinner on the outside of the restaurant after about a 20-30 minute wait. The bone marrow had the best flavor I've experienced for the dish. However, it is definitely overshadowed by the rich flavor of the foie gras. This experience was unforgettable, with our view of Parisian streets on a brisk, April night. This place feels like a Foie Gras specialist but also, a tourist destination. Over 80% of the patrons here were tourists. As a Chinese, I understood more than 50% of the conservations (Chinese). Which doesn't mean anything about the food. Just observation. Onion soup - 2 stars. First, the cheese failed to emit the baked, melted gruyere cheese, there is no aroma at all. I don't think they used gruyere cheese. May be mozzarella cheese. The worst part was the bread in the soup. It tasted stale which ruin the flavor of the soup. I had to finish without the bread. Escargot - Another disappointment. What made escargots special was the garlic butter and herb. Here, there were the herbs, no garlic, and French is famous with their butter but I taste oil but not buttery. Other places I actually get excited dipping the bread into the garlic butter but not here. Pan seared Foie gras - The quality of Foie Gras was definitely there. This place was a huge letdown. They had a cute little artisanal market on the front left of the restaurant. They had a number of goods to choose from and I ended up buying a few things for souvenirs. As for the actual restaurant, they had a number of delicious sounding items on their menu. Our server was very attentive to us and helped us decide on our dinner orders. Similar to the other restaurants though. After our food was delivered, it was far in between when we were checked on again. And after dessert it took even longer for our server to bring the bill. Overall, the food was a letdown. I do not exaggerate when I say that the frog legs just tasted like slightly flavored water. My friend's ravioli had a fairly decent flavored sauce but the pasta was a bit chewy. My friend's duck breast was pretty tough; I had noticed the table next to us also ordered it and they seemed to have trouble finishing/cutting theirs as well. I truly wanted to love the duck here since a lot of people raved about it but it was dry and felt as if I was eating jerky rather than a duck confit. I had high hopes for this restaurant, and they were met. Had this place bookmarked for a while before actually making the reservations. We had a couple of options for lunch, but decided to come here to enjoy some more French cuisine. After we were done with the Louvre, we made our way over here. It was about a 15 min walk and we were able to visit a couple spots on the itinerary along the way. What caught my eye was the duck foie gras ravioli and I was dead set on ordering that. We also got a dish of escargot because you just have to get that when in France. The last dish that we shared was the gourmande salad, which comes with a variety of duck meat (duck foie gras, smoked duck breast, gizzards, duck leg). The hype is real. We tried to come here a few years ago, but got derailed by a train strike. We tried to get a reservation here this year, but we looked to late and Le Comptoir was already booked out. We happened to pass by here during lunch and lucked out that they had their last table available. Thank. goodness. The food and the service here are unparalleled. We started off with the escargot which was super good. We sopped up all the sauce with the bread. Speaking of which, the bread service was probably the best I had on the trip outside of Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. If you're not in the mood for duck, this is not the place for you. The roasted duck breast here was probably the best duck I've ever had. The cook on the duck was absolutely perfect and the balsamic sauce was just such a perfect compliment. I love a restaurant or bar with a great vibe. I was on my way to a different restaurant, actually, when I walked by Le Comptoir de la Gastonomie and sensed it had a great vibe. This place was buzzing on a Saturday night. The waiters and host were in a constant dance on the dining room floor, back and forth to the kitchen, and then out the door to the sidewalk tables. It was really fun to watch! I was dining alone so I did not have to wait long for a seat to open up at the bar. After chatting with a few people about what they had ordered, I settled on the french onion soup, foie gras appetizer, and escargot. What a rich meal! I wish I had a friend or someone with me, because everything on the menu smelled and looked so good and the food was so rich and decadent. Unfortunately, we had gone to an almost perfect dinner at a duck/foie gras centric restaurant a few days earlier. While the salad was highly regarded, the confit was comparable, but the snails were smaller and the preparation was not as satisfying. The foie gras appetizers were far more flavorful and the preparations more satisfying at Il était une oie dans le Sud Ouest, the other restaurant. The creme brulee was very good. Service was another factor. They also did not hover and point out the opportunity to tip as they did here, which is an absolute mistake from my perspective. I must agree with the Michelin star reviewers and say this restaurant is not on the same league as other award recipients; due primarily to inconsistent service or lack of. Although my dining experiences had been pleasant, I've witnessed bad attitude, poor service towards other diners, a major faux pas! It's possible that more than one restaurant critic dining solo had poor service and hence the deduction in Michelin stars. Evidently, this restaurant is not a fan of solo diners and that's unfortunate, most times I am a solo diner like many and we can eat and drink and spend Beaucoup bucks $$$$ I prefer dining outdoors, and thank goodness because space inside the restaurant was tight and the last few times I was there, it was crowded with tourists from Asia, and was not sure which country but I didn't want to over hear them loudly talking, the waiters and locals were annoyed because I overheard them commenting and not too kindly. Because some states in the US like California bans the production and sale Foie Gras, I cannot eat it as often. For those who don't know, Foie Gras is a delicacy made from the 'LIVER' of a duck or goose. Strangely, I don't eat any other liver of any sorts, but have acquired a palate for this and appreciate this delicacy when available. Luck would have it that we had the best dish here on the last full day of our 10-day stay in Paris. Although the restaurant is literally just steps away from our apartment hotel, we decided to patronize the restaurant only towards the end of our trip. My husband had been on the hunt for a good cassoulet and he found out that they served the dish. We made reservation for lunch as we could not get in for dinner. We both ordered the same dishes: bone marrow and the cassoulet. It was a long piece of bone marrow and I loved the texture served at the restaurant - more solid than gelatin-y. The flavour was rich. I savoured it by taking small bites so it would last longer. As soon as we took the first scoop out of the cassoulet after the waiter had set it down, we knew it was the best dish for both of us for the past the 10 days. There was so much depth in the flavour but it compliments all the other richness in the bowl (the crispy duck leg confit, pork belly and sausages). The meats were soft and tender but there was enough texture to come through every bite. The waiter was very happy that we mopped up every bit of the sauce in the bowls. He literally said, "It made me so happy to see that people enjoy their foods". The waitstaff were extremely friendly, too. While my husband and I tried to converse in French but they helped us in English. The pair seated in the table next to to us did not speak French and their English was not proficient either. It was originally a wholesaler of foie gras to restaurants before it became a restaurant in 1990 it has a loyal Parisian clientèle surrounded by stores for the serious chef (Mora, TOC, DeHillerin, etc) as Les Halles used to house the central Paris food market.
