The cat's name is Bobbie, and while not unfriendly, it was hard to get a good photo of her or pet her. I spent at least five minutes following her around, trying to get a photo of her. No one seemed to pay any attention to the idiot tourist chasing the cat; they were probably used to it. For lunch, I had a BLT and wine. Basic, but tasty. Three stars plus an extra star for the cat! The atmosphere inside this cafe/bar in De Pjip, feels cool and very local. Good music (mostly English and American tunes with some jazz thrown in) and they also have Bob, the pub cat, who skulks around searching for a warm spot to snooze. We loved it so much for drinks, we decided to come back for food. It was quite early so ordered a sharing plank, stroke of genius I might add. Five dishes chosen by the chef in the style of tapas. We had four slices of rare steak in peppercorn sauce (stand out dish for us cooked perfectly), Dutch sausage sliced, prawns in tomato sauce, Filo parcel stuffed with vegetables and goat cheese with honey and walnuts. All for 17 euros between two and was well worth it. Do visit this place if you come to Amsterdam on holiday, it's off the tourist track and such a great find.

The atmosphere of this restaurant was great, super cozy and plenty of room to sit with a large bar near the middle of the space. Fortunately, we stumbled upon the Café de Pels, a fun and friendly establishment that seemed to be family owned. The cafe was BUSY! We found large round table near the back with some open seats, so we asked if we could join them. We ordered a cappuccino and a latte. They were the best. My husband who favors lattes found that all the lattes in Italy were too milky and never hot enough for him. This drink was the perfect blend. The coffee was smooth, rich, with no bitterness, and the latte had just the right amount of milk, steamed hot! Hubby was a happy camper. My cappuccino was also hot, and while the coffee was rich and strong, there was no bitterness needing to be covered with sugar. The drinks were served with a delightful little chocolate. We were warming up already. Since it was early evening, there was a complete mix of young and old, tourists and locals, drinking beer, coffees and all kinds of snacks. Suddenly we were lost in conversation with our tablemates: a salesman born and raised in Amsterdam, a writer from Scotland and his wife, an educator from London. They shared their appetizers, their laughs and their stories for the next two hours. The same kinds of spontaneous conversations seemed to be developing all over the cafe. Orange juice (always fresh squeezed in EU) was great of course. So were my croissant and cheese. But le piece de resistance of this visit was my latte! WOW, the most well balanced, smooth cup of espresso goodness I have had the entire time I was in Europe! The Dutch know how to make a fantastic latte among many other things. This establishment has a local crowd and is very reasonably priced, great choice for breakfast or lunch!

Kid and doggy friendly. Only thing I dont love is there no laptop or wifi policy during weekends and peak hours. I was asked to shut my computer down because they use of computers would 'fill the cafe' (when the cafe was totally empty). I get that this is a personal policy, and facilitates human to human contact... but I was looking forward to having some much-needed me time (Im a new mom who needed a getaway). Otherwise pretty good and will return.
