The restaurant was neat, very clean and beautifully decorated. There were several more fireplaces throughout the restaurant, which I loved. We got in the service line and the workers there were very kind and patient with us as we scanned the large selection of food. I finally settled on the fried chicken, au gratin potatoes and green beans. My husband also had fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and a piece of cherry pie. When we were looking around for a table, a polite young man approached me and asked me if he could help me with my tray, which I GREATLY appreciated. He took it and carefully placed it on the table we selected. I thought this was a very nice touch. The chicken looked good, and it was well- seasoned but not as crispy as I like it. The bones inside were black - so it was Tyson chicken or some such, I'm sure. It was done, but again, not as well-done as I like. The au gratin potatoes were very, VERY cheesy - good, but a bit too rich for my taste. The green beans were well-seasoned and I enjoyed them. My husband thought the fried chicken was too salty, but I didn't find that to be the case. He liked the mashed potatoes and gravy. I took a bite of his cherry pie - he sprinkled sugar on it because he thought it was too tart, but I thought it was good and regretted not getting a piece of it myself. Perhaps a little ice cream on top of it would have been a nice addition. All in all, it was a good meal at a nice, homey restaurant with wonderful service. I would love to come back on a cold day when they might have the fireplaces lit.

I really wanted to try the Japanese sandwiches but around 6pm they were sold out of every single one. Overall, the places we tried were okay, with the exception of both Brazilian places which were phenomenal. Both were a really great value for the potions and very well seasoned. The rest, like the dumplings and the empanadas were hit or miss, more so on the miss side. But I will say it's a very fun place to hang out. There's lots of space to grab a beer and just catch up with friends.

So one weekday, I brought my family to this cafeteria-style restaurant that sounds like a medical condition. ("I tore my MCL and the doctor thinks I might be out of commission for another six weeks.") I mean, MCL is fine. You get to pick what you want to eat from a smorgasbord of random foods. I thought my children might like this novelty, and I was right. They liked picking out what they wanted to eat, as opposed to what they were used to, which is me serving them a specific meal. Can it be that we can choose blue Jello for dinner?! And strawberry shortcake! And spaghetti! And chicken nuggets with fries! Yes, my children -- go wild. In the end, both of my kids chose chicken nuggets with fries. Because ... kids. They thought the nuggs were a bit hard, even with lots of ketchup. We also got the breaded catfish and the fried chicken, which I would also describe as "hard." I guess you should expect a certain amount of hardness from something that's breaded, but these things tasted like they had been under the heat lamp for a spell. I'm also not sure how MCL manages to produce food that's incredibly salty but also lacking in flavor. They are an enigma! I do recommend the steamed broccoli. MCL knows how to steam a broccoli just right. When I visited on a Monday, MCL was bustling with customers. But despite all of the people there, the restaurant was quiet. They don't play any music here, or at least they didn't when I visited, so it's a good place to visit if you want some cafeteria-style food and also need to talk in low tones. I kind of like that they didn't play any music in the dining room, and so did my oldest child, who usually listens to music all the time. Sometimes, you just don't need music! Especially when you're tucking into a plate of liver and onions. I learned that you can get DoorDash from MCL, if you gotta get your carved roast beef but don't want to leave the house.

Most people like their meal hot like it was just cooked. Maybe the servers could start taking the food from the bottom instead of the top. I think that would help. But I will continue to try to enjoy MCL as long as the prices stay doable. Good Food!

Vintage glass block walls, original Formica topped counters and menu boards over the bar carried me back in time. The place is authentic. The staff greeted us when we entered and reminded us they are cash only! The red vinyl chairs beckoned us to sit anywhere. We sat at the bar. Shelly, our server was friendly and attentive. I had the Fish Sandwich Special ($14) that came with fries and slaw. The breaded fish was hot! I loved the finely shredded lettuce and thin sliced onion and tomato. The sandwich was hard to eat because it was so big. The coleslaw was creamy and sweet. The fries were good. My husband had the Pork Tenderloin ($9) with fries. He put the tenderloin up on his "top five" list, which is quite an honor. The tenderloin was massive, moist with a perfectly seasoned breading. The brioche style roll was a nice touch. We made a game time decision after visiting YELP to find a good place to go to dinner on a Friday evening and this came up. Tucked back in a Washington Township neighborhood it is like going to grandmas house. There is plenty of parking, and they have a separate entrance if you want to just do a pick up order so you don't have to go inside it appears. They have a very set menu that looks like it probably doesn't change often. We ordered Family Style Fried chicken which came with two sides (corn and mash potatoes/gravy), it also comes with a starter salad, beets and biscuits with apple butter and finishes with ice cream and they give you different toppings to put on top (Carmel, Strawberry and Chocolate) at your leisure. Needless to say we were stuffed walking out of that place. Everything was good, the food was hot and the service was wonderful. We were seated next to a table of women who were having a great time and it got a little loud but other than that, it was a really nice visit. Not realizing how big the "sides" are, we ordered Mac and cheese and whew it is the biggest SIDE I have ever seen! A couple things: The salad, they only offer vinegar and oil which is not the table. You can request ranch but that's the only dressing they have. The salad doesn't have anything but iceberg lettuce and shredded carrots so don't expect a full fledge salad like you may be used to. Lastly, it can be a little pricey. For our meals the side of Mac and 1 drink it came up to $90 before tip.

I liked the complimentary coffee bar while waiting for a table. Since I came with a couple of friends and didn't have reservations, we ended up waiting somewhere between 30 minutes to an hour before being seated. One of the biggest drawbacks was the restroom situation. There are only two gender neutral restrooms, and the wait was incredibly long. I waited close to 30 minutes just to use the restroom. It seemed like only one restroom may have been operational because I only noticed people coming out of one. For a business this large and as busy as it gets, I don't feel that's enough restroom accommodation. The first available table was outside, so we decided to take it. Unfortunately, it wasn't the best experience. There was nearby construction, making it very loud and difficult to carry on conversations amongst our table. It was also a windy and chilly day, and I definitely underestimated the weather. I should have brought a coat! We weren't in the sun so it was too chilly. The strong wind constantly blew napkins and other items around the table, which became frustrating. During cooler days, outdoor heaters would make the patio much more comfortable. Even though I was uncomfortable, our server was friendly and attentive to us. I ordered the Morning Edition breakfast, and it was excellent. I liked the variety of items included, everything tasted good, and the portion size was just right for me. I finished every bite and left satisfied. I really enjoyed the potatoes and cinnamon toast. I enjoyed my food and service was good, but if you're planning to visit on a Saturday morning, I would strongly recommend making reservations if possible. It could save you a long wait and potentially get you a better seating option.
