It has been about 20 years since my wife and I had dinner here. The food was great then so we knew what to expect when we came back except the prices had gone up. ALOT !!! I ordered the Hollyhock Fried Chicken Dinner. The chicken was great like I remembered and the sides were good. I really like their green beans and corn. My wife ordered the Dark Chicken Dinner. She said the chicken was really tasty just like her mom used to make. (FYI....my wife was born and raised in Indiana. I'm a retired Army transplant). She really loved the mashed potatoes because like she says "they're made from real potatoes and not a mix". The place was quaint and the wait staff were great. I don't know how I have NEVER heard of this place, and it is on the side of town that I actually frequent. We made a game time decision after visiting YELP to find a good place to go to dinner on a Friday evening and this came up. Tucked back in a Washington Township neighborhood it is like going to grandmas house. There is plenty of parking, and they have a separate entrance if you want to just do a pick up order so you don't have to go inside it appears. They have a very set menu that looks like it probably doesn't change often. We ordered Family Style Fried chicken which came with two sides (corn and mash potatoes/gravy), it also comes with a starter salad, beets and biscuits with apple butter and finishes with ice cream and they give you different toppings to put on top (Carmel, Strawberry and Chocolate) at your leisure. Needless to say we were stuffed walking out of that place. Everything was good, the food was hot and the service was wonderful. We were seated next to a table of women who were having a great time and it got a little loud but other than that, it was a really nice visit. Not realizing how big the "sides" are, we ordered Mac and cheese and whew it is the biggest SIDE I have ever seen! A couple things: The salad, they only offer vinegar and oil which is not the table. You can request ranch but that's the only dressing they have. The salad doesn't have anything but iceberg lettuce and shredded carrots so don't expect a full fledge salad like you may be used to. First of all, we haven't eaten at Hollyhock Hill for several years. The last time we ate there each table was covered in a white table cloth. I don't remember the dish ware but it was appropriate. I also remember a celery and radish plate along with nice table decoration. Well, that is a memory busted. We were met when we walked in and seated at a cafeteria table. No décor, no table cloth and a menu that says white chicken dinner is $38.95. We had a lovely server who was accommodating as she could be but she was serving to large parties. One was about 16 people the other 12 and then our little party of 4 We ordered drinks but my friend ordered gin and tonic. They brought 2 different drinks, never tasting good and settled on a coke We asked about an offering on the menu. Turns out it is $29.99 for mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans. No chicken. We asked how many pieces are served in a chicken order and our server noted 2 or 3. We saw liver and gizzards and our server said they could make them a dinner ($29.99). We ordered those and it was a full dinner plate full. More than we could eat Eating on the "folding table" we were served food on Walmart dishware. They used to bring peppermint ice cream or syrup for a Sunday. It was served in a serving nice bowl. Now you get chocolate, butterscotch or strawberry in a squeeze bottle. Just another thing to cheapen the experience. Will I go back again? No way, after experiencing the before and after it is like going to a business that is struggling at the expense of the customer experience. Took the beautiful wife to one of her favorite restaurants tonight. She used to enjoy going here years ago with her family. Much has changed but some thankfully has stayed the same. They do shared sides here so dinner started with iceberg lettuce, fried biscuits with apple butter & my wife's favorite pickled beets. All were quite good. The house dressing is a sweet vinaigrette that works quite well well. My awesome bride had the white meat chicken dinner while I had the pan fried chicken tenders. Both were very good. Family style green beans, corn & mashed potatoes with gravy all came with the meal. They were good & plentiful. At this point I'd like to commend our waiter Tracy. While he had several tables he & the busser assisting him kept on top of everything & did a great job! At the end of the meal you get a scoop of vanilla ice cream & they bring out 3 syrups for you to choose to put on it. Chocolate, Crème De Menthe or Carmel. It has been approximately a decade or two since I've had Hollyhock Hill. My cousin use to get their takeout all of the time. For this visit, my car club dined in for dinner. My party of 13 decided to order from the special plates so that we could try different meats. They offer a family style option that would have limited us to only fried chicken. We started with biscuits and apple butter. The biscuits were good and fluffy. Apple butter was delicious. I got the chicken tenderloins, corn, and green beans. Chicken was as good as I remember. I'm picky about green beans, but HH's offering are well seasoned and very good. Corn was good as well. Others enjoyed the glaze on the salmon and the shrimp. They liked the chicken as well. The only negative of the night was the mashed potatoes which lacked seasoning. A dessert of vanilla ice cream with three different topping syrups is automatically included. It was the perfect ending to a good night. Service was great. There was a small hiccup and delay with one of the orders, but the staff at HH quickly corrected and made up for it. I was able to purchase a bottle of their specialized salad dressing because it was that good! The only thing I find fault was that it was rather expensive BUT no fault of theirs, it was totally my fault because I didn't understand what serving family style ment! Have you ever had a long established restaurant in your city that for some reason you'd just never visited? That's Hollyhock Hill for me. One of Indy's original family dining restaurants, Hollyhock Hill was first established in 1928 and has existed my entire life of 50+ years. Yet, for whatever reason, I'd simply never visited until tonight. The restaurant is located in a residential area at 81st and College Avenue in a former residence turned restaurant. From what I was told tonight, there's still an existing apartment on the upper floor (I believe it's unused). As noted, this is a family dining establishment - an increasingly rare concept of sharing a meal with an agreed upon menu. They seem to take the greatest pride in their fried chicken, though they do have several other options available. In terms of access, they do have a handful of ADA compliant parking spots. They are at a slight slant - so you need to be a bit careful. However, that's hard to avoid in this particular area. There's also a wooden ramp from the parking lot into the restaurant. It has a couple twists and turns, however, it's a pretty well made ramp - I might argue it needs better handrails, however, there's an obvious effort there. It's a little weird as you get to the restaurant - there's a double-entry and both doors are on a slight incline. So, if you have a weak upper-body, you may need some help. However, both doors are pretty light. From what I could tell, about half the restaurant is accessible. There's a step down into a couple areas. So, if you need the accessibility it's best to note it in your reservation. The concept here is simple - you have a fried chicken entree or one of several combination dinners. Everybody's comes out together, though generally an order is considered about three pieces. You get salad, bread (rolls), some sides, and an ice cream dessert. Drinks are extra - they have iced tea and serve Coke products. They do have a wine menu with some beer and cocktails also available. I was with a party of 10. We had a reservation for 12, however, two canceled. Most of us ordered the fried chicken - there were a couple exceptions. I ordered my usual iced tea. Rolls were delicious and were served with apple butter. Sides included pickled beets, cottage cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes (gravy available), and corn. The sides seemed to just be what came with the meal. The ice cream dessert included chocolate sauce and a couple other options. The fried chicken was excellent. The rolls were some of the best restaurant rolls I've had. I was also impressed with the mashed potatoes. I did not eat the cottage cheese or beets. The green beans and corn were fine. The ice cream was a nice touch. Drinks stayed filled and I don't think I had to ask once. There was a bit of a kerfuffle when paying the bill as our organizer had intentionally checked to make sure we could pay separately, however, that's generally not the practice here. However, it was worked out in a friendly manner. Our server was quiet but hospitable. There's no doubt this is on the expensive end and in terms of value I'm not quite sure I'd say that's the emphasis here. This is more of a premium family and special occasion experience. I didn't mind paying it - I tipped well, however, this is not something I'd do regularly. But will I go back? I'm pretty sure I will. This was a good experience. The food was good to great, the service was attentive, the efforts at accessibility were appreciated, and it was a great night with great friends. read more

This is the first time I have ever done a review without actually visiting the establishment, but hear me out We made a Mother's Day reservation for a party of four at Easter. We had heard the food was good, so my wife chose Hollyhock. I got a notification from Open Table the night before to confirm my reservation, which I did. I then looked to see if there was any updates to the menu, and that's where my jaw dropped. Not for the menu itself, but for the last two lines on the menu: 3.5% credit card fee added to all bills 22% gratuity added to all tables I have no problem with tipping, and am extremely generous when the experience calls for it, but I will not let a restaurant dictate what I am obligated to tip when I haven't even been served yet. Just for reference, with fees it equated to $53 per person, FOR CHICKEN! We cancelled our reservation an hour before, and they have lost a potential customer forever. read more

Their dressing is an oil based dressing that many go crazy for. It's sold Kroger if you are one that wants to find it again. Fried chicken comes out with mashed potatoes, gravy, home style green beans, corn and biscuits with a side of apple butter. The chicken is always crispy and juicy inside. I like to ask for hot sauce for the table. The mashed potatoes are your straightforward mashed taters. Nothing fancy added here. The white gravy is under seasoned but that is a personal preference I'm sure. The green beans have pork and onions which give it the homemade simmered for hours taste. The corn is straight forward. The biscuits however are a staple. They are the best when they're fresh from the oven. The apple butter is a nice compliment!! Lastly the vanilla ice cream. It's pricey, and other than the entree, it's family style. We knew that going in. So expected the food to be good, especially the fried chicken. Service was fine. The chicken? All of us thought it was dry, overdone. My granddaughter could hardly cut her strips. I had a breast, of which the cut was unusual but plenty of meat. I didn't finish mine, it was so dry. All the sides were good; but mashed potatos, corn and green beans are relatively cheap at the grocery store. So for the price we paid, sure expected better. I'm sorry Hollyhock Hills. The roots of this restaurant goes all the way back to 1928. It has a decent sized private parking lot and a pretty good sized dining area too. There is some nice bench seating outside for those people that have to wait for their table. The restaurant has a coat room to store your coat. I made my reservations online the day before my visit. It was very simple and efficient. My table was ready for me and my party when I got there. we were seated right away. The menu is pretty simple. It has steaks, salmon, chicken gizzards, giblets, and of course, their signature fried chicken. They also serve wine and a few signature cocktails. We had to go with the fried chicken that we heard so much about. We got some macaroni and cheese and chicken tenders for the littles. Keep in mind that the price for the chicken dinner is per person. Yes, per person. Before you get your meal, they bring you some cottage cheese (no thank you), beets, biscuits with apple butter and garden salad with a vinaigrette dressing. You can also request some ranch dressing, if that tickles your fancy. It took us about 30 minutes to get our food and when it came out it came with green beans, mashed potatoes with gravy, and corn. It was all prepared family style, meaning they all came in large bowls and the chicken came in a large serving container. The chicken was hot, crispy and very flavorful. I don't know if it was the best I ever had, but it is up there. The sides were good. The littles loved the mac and cheese. The chicken tenders were not your usual chicken tenders, they were closer to fried chicken, so they were not too fond of them. I liked them though. The corn, mashed potatoes and green beans were good. I would equate them to a good cafeteria's version of sides. They did not have a real home cooked taste, but were tasty enough. The staff here was moving all over the place, but they were still very attentive and friendly. I will be the first to admit that this place is a bit pricey. Our bill came out to a C-note for a family of 4, with nothing really special ordered. You do get a lot of food though. We had to bring a lot home. They do give you styrofoam containers and bags to pack away your leftovers. The littles were getting antsy by the end of dinner so, we were ready to forgo our ice cream and leave. Our server understood and got us some brownies to go, which we appreciated and they did not make it half the car ride home. The littles devoured them. This was a nice place to have a good family sit down dinner. It will probably not be a regular thing because of the price tag, but it is definitely something that we will do every once in a while. I had driven by, and heard people talk about Hollyhock Hill but hadn't ever eaten here in all the years I've lived in Indy. I had some family in visiting from out of town and one had seen a post by a favorite driver who raved about the chicken here, so he really wanted to try it. Since none of us had been here before we went for the fried chicken dinner. Everything is served family style and they will bring out more of any of the first course items and sides as needed. The rule is that if a refill of any of these items makes it to your table, you can box up leftovers with any leftover chicken or other proteins, but they won't bring out extra bowls of stuff just for you to box up. That is definitely more than fair. The first course includes iceberg lettuce salad with their house dressing that reminds me of the dressing my grandmother used to make. It is sweet and light and works with iceberg lettuce. They also serve hot biscuits with apple butter that were amazing! Buttery and fluffy goodness with delicious apple butter. Sweet pickled beets and cottage cheese round out the first course. I really like beets, and these were good. Cottage cheese as part of a first course reminded me of the old salad bars they used to have at a lot of places. Nostalgia is not a bad thing! The chicken comes on a platter with three pieces per person. It was juicy with a nice thin and crisp coating. Yes, we could see why someone posted about this chicken! The sides were green beans, corn and mashed potatoes with gravy. All were good and our server was correct about the cream gravy being the star of the sides! That would work on the biscuits too...just saying...leftover biscuits and leftover gravy could be a next day breakfast! Throw in some sausage if you've got it! The meal ends with a.scoop of vanilla ice cream and three syrup containers with toppings (chocolate, butterscotch and mint) Service was great and given that the building is an old house each room doesn't have that many tables which gives the place a smaller feel than if it were one big room which is nice. What happened. The long table reminded me of a high school cafeteria table. No table cloth, very stark and cold. This has always been our go-to for a nice Sunday meal - hadn't been in a while. Sadly not the same. Staff were very nice. Chicken was bland, and sides were ok. I know the restaurant business is tough and respect the hard work of the kitchen staff - but something has changed and it's not the same. Probably why the place was not that crowded on a Sunday afternoon. We wish them the best, and hope they take our comments seriously. We might try them again, but not anytime soon. read more

First time eating here. My wife had heard about this place and wanted to try it out. We had reservations and were sat immediately upon arrival. It was very busy and we saw quite a few larger groups. The restaurant was fairly bright and the interior is a bit dated but still has character. It was loud inside but as some of the larger groups left it quieted down in our section. As for the food, I had read reviews and it seems like a love hate mix. People seem to either love this place or hate it. It was a solid meal so not sure why the bad reviews. We did the chicken dinner which starts out with salad, cottage cheese, pickled beets and biscuits and apple butter. Then the main meal of chicken (1 beast, 1 thigh, 1 drumstick) per person and sides of corn, green beans, mashed potato and gravy. To end it you get a scoop of ice cream.
