This is a historic and one of the longest-standing cafes in Salzburg and many travel sites mention this as a must-see when visiting. While it is indeed a beautiful place to sit along the river and people watch, the pastries are overpriced and not that great. I suppose you're paying for the experience, but there easily better quality cafes along the river that won't cost as much. read more

Come here for breakfast! If you are in Salzburg as a tourist like we were, you will have trouble finding somewhere to eat earlier than maybe 9:30. (Which is fine by the way, it's just how they seem to do things here). The staff were great and patient with my bad German. They do have a menu in English if you ask. The croissants were the best I've ever had. Light, buttery, soft. We came here two mornings in a row. The view of the river was a great way to start the day. The coffee was amazing too. On our trip to salzburg, my husband and I tried to visit as many coffee houses as possible haha. We have become obsessed the with coffee and cake culture here. And we were very pleased with our experience at Cafe Bazar. We split a piece of cake, we were hoping to try the Sacher torte here but unfortunately as it was later in the day, they had run out. The cake we did get was still wonderful though and we enjoyed our coffee as well!( I got the Cafe Melange) Would definitely go here to get the coffeehouse experience! Gorgeous cafe on the river in Salzburg. It is a classic Austrian cafe with high ceilings and a casual atmosphere. This is a charming (and upscale) cafe well situated next to the river. We went in mid-April, still early for tourist invasion, so we found the cafe quiet and half empty (their outdoor seating wasn't even open due to rain and cold weather). Nonetheless, the indoor ambience was cozy, especially after coming down from the Hohensalzburg Fortress in chilly wind. Now the coffee... I ordered a cappuccino with sachertorte (I forgot what hubby ordered, but it was delicious). My drink was rich and smooth, I especially liked the attention to detail - from the texture of the froth to the floating cream to the cup's placement when it was served. This is a place where you can sit for a long time without having to worry about overstaying your welcome. Next time we visit, we'll have to try their breakfast. read more

This is a quaint cafe that is located right next to the river. We arrived around 10:45 a.m. and the cafe was very busy. We were able to sit down right away. The service was wonderful and the food was delightful! I had the Bazar Classic from the breakfast menu and it was outstanding. It included three different breads, freshly sliced ham, the best Swiss cheese I've ever had and Brie. It was also served with butter, jam, a cream cheese chive spread and fresh squeezed orange juice. I also ordered a glass of Prosecco and made a mimosa with my OJ. It was all wonderful. My husband had a dish that was scrambled eggs with fried sausage and cheese. It was equally as wonderful! All of that and a bottle of water was $29 euros, so also very affordable! read more

Long before people got to sit at a Starbucks or a trendy hipster coffee shops, Austrians had their coffee houses, where they would sit, read the paper and enjoy a good cup of coffee with a slice of cake. This is a very traditional place, where the servers are top notch. As a matter of fact, Vienna (the capital of Austria) was not the first city in history with a coffee house. Café Bazar is located by the river Salzach and it's THE typical Austrian coffeehouse. When the weather is nice you can sit outside and enjoy the gorgeous view. It's one of my favorite coffee houses in Salzburg. They make amazing topfstrudel (ask to have it the traditional way with vanilla sauce), and great cakes in general. Just go check them out in the back before you sit down and order your coffee, this is a great place to hang out with friends, and no problem if you want to sit there for hours, no one is going to rush you out. read more

Beautiful spot on the river, though you certainly pay a premium for it. Coffees taste amazing but are tiny. Same with the juices. Definitely worth a breakfast stop in the sun, but maybe just once due to high price. Nobody will rush you - bring the paper and enjoy the morning on the water and away from traffic. read more

However, one theme I observed in the main areas of Salzburg is that the cafes are expensive. A soup, cheese sandwich, coffee and water ran me €25 here. Service was prompt and quality of the food was good. But the price is not worth it. There is a good view of the canal and the location is ideal. We came here previously & the service was so snooty that it nearly​ spoiled our experience. This time our server was delightful and the traditional Austrian breakfast​ served on the outdoor terrace with a full view of the Hohenfest and downtown was wonderful. The view alone is worth the experience. The food simply adds to it. Please refrain from licking the homemade jelly containers, even if you want to. It's not allowed. But it's so good you'll want to. Situated alongside the river is this very old café. Limited food selections but a sizeable drink menu ranging from coffee and tea to mixed drinks. You definitely want to sit in the main room of the restaurant for the best service. Speaking of service, it is a wee bit on the pretentious side. If you sit in the entryway room, you will be easily overlooked by servers. I ordered a latte and really enjoyed it. I love how the Austrians elevate the coffee experience by serving it on a silver platter with a small glass of still water. The view from the terrace is wonderful. This is a very classic coffee house like you would find it Vienna. The difference is without question the nice view and the spectacular interior. Although it's quite expensive the cakes are extremely tasty and there are different ones to choose from everyday. The hubs and I went here for lunch whilst touring the pretty city. We arrived moments before the lunch crowd, so there wasn't any issue being seated quickly. I had a delicious pan fried fennel and my husband had the typical Frankfurter. Weiner is weiner here, however if you ask my hubs he will tell you it was above average. My dish was delish, perfect portion size and only lightly fried with parmesan cheese. The server seemed kind of snooty but was prompt and available when necessary. We would definitely go back but I am not one for repeats in a new city. read more

My FAVORITE place for lunch in all of Salzburg!!! The Cafe is gorgeous, with a lovely view right on the Salzach River. Note that it is on the "unfashionable" side of the river, a bit out of the Old City, but well worth the short walk over the Makartsteig bridge. The interior was designed by the same man who designed the real Trapp Villa in Aigen, and it has been lovingly restored. There is a small menu, and everything is delicious, from the Bacon-wrapped Goat Cheese Salad, to the Schinken-Käse Haustoast. Note that they do not offer a beer bigger than .33l, so it isn't a big beer. The house Grüner Veltiner is a nice crisp glass of wine to accompany lunch. Make sure to ask what the daily special, and if it's Schinkenfleckerl, GET IT! Austrian comfort food does not get any better than this! If it's in season, it's worth the wait to eat outside. Note that the enclosed porch is the only place where smoking is allowed. The servers all speak passable English. All in all, it's the BEST place to broaden your horizons for daily Austrian cuisine that isn't hoity-toity, or the usual Schnitzel. read more

All the guide books tell you to go to Cafe Tomeselli or the Glockenspiel but if you want to avoid fighting for a table or being hustled out of said table quickly I REALLY recommend Cafe Bazar. It's got all the elegance of the traditional Austrian cafe without so much craziness. It's expensive but if my friends and I would go here often purely for coffee and their chocolate cake. I'm a chocolate lover and have sampled my fair share of cakes and let me tell you- this one beats them all. Their pastries in general are typically good. Cafe Bazar is also conveniently located next to the Salzach giving you a view of the river and old town. read more

Great place to start your morning with a good view of the river. I started off with a tiny European cup of coffee, because that's how Europe does it. Ordered some of their sausage and eggs, which was really just some chopped hot dogs mixed with eggs, though it was pretty good. The best part of the meal was their chicken pate, which came with fresh bread. The servers were legit and take what they do seriously. I believe they only took cash which was a bit odd.
