The shop has a delectable selection of sweet treats, including pastries, cakes (individual and slices) and chocolates. They also serve coffee drinks and have a good amount of seating if you are dining in. I loved this place so much that I visited it twice in one day for breakfast and an evening dessert. Their hazelnut pastry is something I still crave and think about. And make sure to try their sacher torte if you love chocolate cakes. It is clear why this business has stood the test of time. We thought we'd have to order at the counter, but the waitress came by and took our order. We each went with a croissant with butter and jam. I got a hot chocolate, and my husband got a latte. Our drinks and pastries came out quickly. It's simple - croissants and hot beverages - but it was interesting to me that though we ordered the same thing, we did not receive the same thing. My croissant was "normal" - no frills, nothing too fancy about it. My husband's croissant had a darker color and some sesame seeds on the outside. Not a big deal, but definitely something we noted. The pastries did the trick, giving us a bit of something to chew on without filling us up so much that we wouldn't be hungry for lunch. The drinks were hot and tasty, as well. The cafe was doing a pretty good business, but I think most of the people in there were tourists, with the exception of a couple of tables. It was nice to have a place to sit and relax in warmth for a bit. The staff was friendly and patient with my broken German, and it was nice that they didn't shoo us out right away. We did vacate our table as the cafe started to get a bit busier, but the temporary sanctuary was appreciated.

A small batch just came out when we arrived so it was warm as we devoured it. I was told there's usually a long line but maybe it was during the heat wave when we went so there were only a few people ahead of us. One interesting thing is there's a stone in front of the store which has 2 shapes of their signature breads. They actually use that to guarantee the size of the bread. Overall, although they only offer limited items, but they've perfected what they do offer. You can tell they use high quality ingredients. This is a must try when in the city.

The wonderful smell of freshly baked bread was quite strong as we got closer and really caught our attention! Out in front was a fully functional waterwheel that was the main source of power for their milling machine. All the ovens were wood fired. It's as if nothing changed over the last 700 plus years. Upon entering we saw the prep and work areas but all was quiet like they just finished baking. Definitely small batches compared to more commercial bakeries. Since we visited in the morning, we ordered their super soft and sweet brioche rolls and the cinnamon raisin buns. Our server pulled them fresh off the racks instead so they were both warm and heavenly in smells. They were delicious. We so wanted to come back again after our first visit but we just ran out of time. Will definitely be our priority during a return visit to Salzburg.

I didn't find the cashier especially polite or helpful, in fact I felt like an idiot asking if there was a minimum charge amount for credit cards (which there isn't here, but a lot of places in Austria do have a minimum so I always ask first !) She knew what she was doing with the chocolates though, and was fast and efficient. As stores tend to be in Austria. If you love Mozartkugel, this is the place!

Zum Brunchen schlicht der falsche Platz. Man sitzt dem Nachbarn fast auf dem Schoß, weil jeder Zentimeter Fläche für Stühle und Tische in Anspruch genommen wird. Quantität geht hier definitiv vor Qualität. Die Bedienung ist unfreundlich, unaufmerksam und langsam, das Frühstück für diesen Preis zu wenig und die Gespräche des Nachbarn interessieren einen nunmal leider nicht. They had a NY breakfast and one below that outlined eggs, ham, cheese and bread, bingo, two orders of those please and water. Our utensils and napkins were brought on a white plate along with salt and pepper, as well as a silver plate holding our waters, which was a great touch. The interior is very classy, old school elegance, and the servers were the same, nicely dressed very polite and helpful. Our food arrived quickly, hot and abundant, not exactly bacon and eggs, but very good. We were not asked how we wanted our eggs cooked,, so what you see is what you get. My eggs were a little overcooked for my taste, but the lovely K got some yolk run. There was a very good amount of food for the price and it all worked well together. We had the chance to chat with our server who spoke very good English, as it seems most of the people we have come across in our two weeks on the Continent do. We had to go back the next afternoon to try the Strudel of course. We were recognized right away, and the place was quite a bit busier so we walked up the stairs and were sat in the main dining area. The Strudel was quite delicious, and once again abundant and swimming in warm custard, which I wasn't sure of, but man it was good. Also added a Stiegel beer which is brewed right here in Salzburg for over 500 years.
