If you like gruyere, you'll love cafe brule! It's a great cheese and it appears a lot on their broad menu. Came here looking for a light dinner. Pefect. French onion and leek soup with an autumn salad. Both with plenty of gruyere! Vinaigrette was awesome. One of the best places in this college town. On our way from Nebraska to the Black Hills, my sister told us that we had to stop and eat at Cafe Brule as they had outstanding food. Unfortunately, this was not true for us. We split the Monte Cristo which came with a super-sweet red berry sauce. The sandwich had very little meat on it and was covered in powdered sugar. We also ordered the Brule potatoes which were not edible. There were only about 10 potato pieces and they were covered in a soupy white cheesy sauce that was disgusting. read more

Great service, the wait staff is very friendly! We enjoy the atmosphere and the great food. We eat there a lot and have only had 1 order that was not correct (eggs were scrambled, not OM) but they got it corrected right away. Consistent service of drinks and such a variety. Hopping little place in a sleepy town. We stopped here on a Friday afternoon as we passed through thanks to fellow Yelpers' reviews. The Cuban sandwich was okay but the Red Pepper Gouda soup made up for it. I'd sell an organ for that recipe. We grabbed dessert to go. You've gotta try the chocolate stout cake. I don't know that I'll find myself in Vermillion again but if so, I'm timing my visit with their hours of operation. read more

I don't understand why Brule is so popular. Their menu looks exciting. However, the food never lives up to the excitement. For one thing, I've never gone there and not had to wait forever for the food to come, and it is ALWAYS cold! And then when you taste it, the food is never all that good. If Brule would hire a good chef or two, and maybe even more wait staff so that the food comes more quickly, maybe it would live up to the excitement it's menu creates. I no longer eat gluten. Cafe Brule has a very short gluten-free menu. It said they have gluten-free wraps, so I ordered the chicken Greek wrap gluten free. The tortilla came laid out flat on a plate with a chicken salad on top of it. The tortilla was stuck to the plate so it couldn't be rolled up. As I ate the salad with a fork, I could chip off pieces of the tortilla from the plate. Terrible! read more

Love their little espresso drinks. The food was great, they were able to accommodate our large group after a small wait by pushing a few tables together. The London fog tea with soy is amazing and I am normally a coffee drinker... and of course the creme brûlée was delicious. Don't even try their cakes as you will become addicted! I am pretty sure we tried and shared most of the choices and they were all amazing. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because of the price, which was a bit spendy for a cafe meal, although, I am not opposed to paying a bit more out in the Midwest for quality food and service. If you are looking for coffee that doesn't taste like air and nonfat milk then this is the place. Their coffee has a taste and is worth the price they charge. The Brule Banger is my personal favorite and it never disappoints when I order it. Also, it is great that they have different milk options to choose from. The staff here are nice and they know how to provide small talk. The atmosphere in the place is great and unique and it feels like a cafe. It's a little tight in space but it has outside seating as well. The food takes a while to get to you but in the end, it is always worth the wait. I highly recommend this place for special occasions and even a small hangout with old friends. Good food! Could be a 4 or 5 star if they just made some minor changes to attentiveness. Coffee cold twice no spoon either time soup was lukewarm. We did get a discount on check and soup was tasty.
