We started off with the trio of empanadas. Chicken, picadillo and shrimp. Let me tell you... the chicken was the star of the entire show. BINGO! I would go back for just more chicken empanadas. Delicious smokey flavor, perfectly cooked. The outside shell was crunchy, yet moist. Wonderfully hand made. Next was the torta de Milaneza. We had it with beef. It was nicely breaded and the avocado was the perfect touch. The bread really made the sandwich. It was the right hardness/texture for tortas, IMHO. We also shared the tilapia con chorizo. Again, winner, winner. It was pan seared and lightly drizzled with the chorizo Chile guajillo broth, side of awesome chipotle mashed potatoes and grilled aspargus, with the right amount of crunch. Yes, of course we had dessert and boy am I glad I did. We shared Grandma's something or another bread budding. It seemed like it was bread pudding made with cinnamon bread. And a huge piece it was. Served warm with a caramel sauce and topped with some yummers coffee ice cream. Nice combo fer sure. The ambiance was chill. Not sure how to feel about this place. We went there for breakfast, the food was OKAY. Just okay. Felt like we totally overpaid for what we had. We were sat in a table close to the windows they open during summer, it was cold AF and windy. My coffee came in handy for that, but we had our toddler with us and she was definitely cold. I've been here for dinner in the past and I've had great experiences with the ambiance, food and everything. So we totally wanted to give the breakfast a try, but we were highly disappointed. There was really loud music playing as well, and I just thought that was a bit weird since it was morning time lol. Like I get it some music is always nice but not when you can't even hold a conversation without having to speak extra loud for your partner to hear you. Ok first, I am average sized person, I am not tall, I am not obese, and I felt like I was 300 lbs trying to squeeze into the chair which is wedged way too tightly between the table and the wall. Yes obviously you can push the table out, and I'm sure they do this to allow more walking space, but honestly I couldn't even put my coat on the back on of my chair and it's really embarrassing to sit down and tell my boyfriend we need to move the table because I can't fit. The food was very good, we got the Torta de Milaneza and the empanadas, both very tasty. The service.. honestly not very friendly. And then they committed one of my ultimate restaurant service faux paus.... If you have nothing to do, please, standing in plain sight just watching customers eat and talk is seriously so uncomfortable. We know you're there, we can see you. We know you're watching us, we can feel it and see it. We know you're listening to us talk, we don't like it. We want some privacy. There were 2 servers standing right at our table on the corner between the kitchen and the dining room, they were clearly bored so they were just standing there chit chatting a bit and dazing, but one gentleman was just dazing right down on me and I hate that, and I hate when I know someone is just standing there watching us and listening to our conversation, and they were literally RIGHT next to us. So that was not very comfortable. I came here with my boyfriend for breakfast. I ordered the veggie breakfast burrito and my boyfriend ordered the chorizo breakfast burrito. The burrito's came with a generous portion of potatoes which were well cooked, only a few were under cooked. Our waters were constantly filled, which was nice. Really is annoying to always have to ask for refills. The food was good, and the portions were perfect. The only issue we had was the chorizo breakfast burrito. It came with only egg, chorizo, cheese, and sour cream. The menu said it also had rice and beans.. so the burrito was just a roll of mushy ingredients.. boyfriend was annoyed but who really cares how he feels he's just a pleb. Beware, this place is not group friendly! I was so excited to host my birthday dinner here and left completely disappointed. We had a group of 12, but on a Tuesday and mostly empty restaurant, I wasn't anticipating too much trouble, but I was wrong. I should have suspected something was off when several of us wanted to start placing food orders but the waiter kept brushing us off and telling us we can't until everyone places their drink order first.. but then would disappear for 5- 10 mins at a time, so we couldn't order said drinks so that we could finally order the food. Once everyone got their drink orders in, we started ordering our food, and the waiter would take two orders and walk away from our table, so that process took way longer than expected. And with a large group, it's understandable that everything would come out at different times, but it blew my mind that the second person to order received her meal after the other 12 arrived (keeping in mind the 15 min lapse in time from the final order being place from hers). Still, my company was great and it was my birthday, so I just tried to brush it off as minor annoyances due to being a large table. I enjoyed the drinks and the food was pretty tasty once it came out, nothing spectacular, but had the night went smoother, I would've likely wanted to come back. But finally, the deal breaker arrived with our bill. We got the ~ $400 bill at which point the waiter then decided to tell us that they will only be able to swipe 3 cards for the table?!? A bit late to mention that now, but we tried to figure out how to do so, some paying in cash, others quickpaying amongst each other,etc. But upon further inspection of the bill we realized that the itemized list per seat were completely off. If anything it only made things way more confusing. The three coffees ordered by the 10-12th seat were all put under seat 2, so literally each person had to scan the bill, one at a time to figure out what they needed to cover. And there was no option to even divide the bill in three groups of four, because they claimed they couldn't reapply the 18% gratuity if they split it that way, nor did that really matter because the bill for seats 1-4 had half the items those seats ordered, mixed in with items from the rest of the table. It was honestly a cluster**** and a complete buzzkill. I don't typically write reviews but I would want to help someone else avoid this mess. Especially sucked happening on my birthday, and then having to continue to apologize to my guests for picking a restaurant that was not only not at all accommodating to our group, not mentioning payment restrictions prior to taking orders, and unable to even itemize the bill correctly. read more

Awesome food horrible service! The food is great that's why I keep coming back but after today I'm not sure if I ever will again. My wife and I go there for breakfast on Sundays and get the same thing every time but they Still some how manage to screw up our orders every time. Today our plates were dirty there was food in my water and of course they messed up our order. At one point while we were eating someone who worked there ( not our waiter) took the hot sauce from our table and gave it to the table next to us with out saying a word to us. It took about 5 minutes to get someone to bring us another one. Another time I was there with friends they screwed up all of or orders, Twice! We were all kind of sick of the back and forth so just ate what ever they brought out to us. I have never been to a place that has consistent bad service like cafe con leche. read more

I am so disappointed! I was hoping to give this restaurant more stars due to all the great reviews. I've been wanting to come here for sometime now, and it has been on Yelp bookmark for awhile. I couldn't justify giving this restaurant more than 2 stars due to poor food quality. We came on Saturday night around 9PM, we were seated right away. It was perfect..no wait at all! We ordered a pitcher of Sangria ($25) it was rather too sweet and had barely any liquor. I ordered the chicken mole entree and my boyfriend ordered the steak jibarito. When my food came out, it seemed as if the mole sauce was microwave on the plate with slices of unseasoned dried rotisserie chicken. For $14.95+ per entree I would not have expected an under seasoned dish. My boyfriend said the jibarito was mediocre (he had better). The entire meal was hard to swallow, but I never complained. I will probably never come back, there are other Latin restaurants that are way better in Chicago & also not over priced! read more

Talk about completely disorganized, horrible customer service...and to top it all off, rather bland food. I placed a delivery order through GrubHub this past weekend. The driver called when he arrived and then delivered part of my order - minus my drink - as well as someone else's food. I decided to be nice and called the driver right away to let him know that I had someone else's order. He said that he would be right back to pick it up. I also let him know that I was missing my drink. After waiting 15 minutes (with my own food getting cold in the meantime), I called him again to ask where he was and he said that he worked for GrubHub and was told not to come back; that it was the restaurant's fault for not giving him the right stuff. I asked him about my missing drink, and he told me to call the restaurant directly. So (again, trying to be nice because I figured that the restaurant might want to know that one of their orders was delivered to the wrong place), I called the restaurant and a very rude young woman answered the phone. She was friendly enough at first, but when I explained the situation, she was extremely UNhelpful. She said that a delivery driver could bring me my drink and that they had to pick up the extra food I was given. I told her that I didn't even want my drink anymore, but that I didn't expect to be charged for it, and that my order and the extra order were both cold by now. I said that I didn't have time to wait around for them to come pick up the extra order that was delivered to me through no fault of my own, and that they probably shouldn't even get it because it was certainly not warm/fresh enough to be delivered to anyone else by this point. The rude, unprofessional employee said that, "it was not her fault," and she was insistent that they had to come get the food back. I said that I may or may not be home, and that by now, I was not pleased at all with my experience and did not feel that I should be charged for my own order since it was cold - all because I was trying to do them a favor and let them know about the extra delivery order! I believe she said that they would reimburse me, but she still insisted that they had to pick up the food. I told her that I was leaving my house soon; she said that they could come by later that day, which is just ridiculous. I told her that they could either send someone to pick it up right away or they probably wouldn't get it back since I wouldn't be home. She said they were sending someone right away...well, almost a half hour later (and I live less than 2 miles from this restaurant), I had to call again and ask where the driver was. She said that they were almost there; at this point, I was extremely fed up and getting ready to leave my home, so I told her that I would just be leaving the food on my front porch. I have no idea why they even wanted that cold, inedible food back - if they were planning on redelivering/reusing it for someone else, that's just sad. I truly felt that they were going to try and charge me for the extra delivery order that some idiot dropped off to me if they couldn't come pick it back up, which is crazy. I was trying to do the restaurant a favor and instead, my food got cold and I wasted far too much of my time dealing with their incompetence. Sadly, the food that I finally got to eat was not even very good - quite bland, greasy, etc. I noticed that I still had a full charge for this order on my credit card, so I complained to GrubHub - they called the restaurant and got me a refund for my drink, but that's all. I said that I was told I would be getting a full refund, but apparently that isn't happening. GrubHub also said that they don't even have drivers for this restaurant, so clearly somebody was lying. I will not be eating at or ordering from this ridiculous establishment again, and I certainly don't recommend them - especially if getting delivery. They can't handle simple orders correctly, they are rude, and they sure make things inconvenient even when it's their own mistake. read more

Last June ('11) my boyfriend and I decided to walk over here. We stood inside of the Cafe Con Leche section for about ten minutes before I stopped someone to ask if we could be seated (STRIKE 1). A host appeared and led us to the back patio. He seated us next to an group of grossly intoxicated people even though the entire patio was open (STRIKE 2). We ordered 15 minutes later (should this be a STRIKE? No, I'll go easy on them. ). 45 minutes later our food arrived (STRIKE 3). No apology (STRIKE 4). Our waiter was also very cold (STRIKE 5). As we were finishing our food the drunk group got up and left (no worries - we had already moved away from them). Suddenly the lights went out and they closed the patio doors (STRIKE 6). I know this happened last year. I know I should have complained right then and right there. Maybe I should have called the next day. I didn't. Reason number 1 I didn't call was because my boyfriend is an ethnic Japanese who was so embarrassed by the treatment we received that he begged me not to open my big mouth. Truth be told I was embarrassed too. I was also sad. I will never return here and every opportunity I get I encourage people to go elsewhere. As a matter of fact I wasn't even going to write this review but I saw a review posted and the raw feelings came back. A good Mexican restaurant in Chicago isn't that hard to find. I know tons. Why come here when I cab walk to another place a couple of blocks away and have food just as good with service 10 times better? read more

I've been going to this place for the past two years, I even commented on how awesome the food and drinks are, until today...it's Christmas Day and I decided to treat my family to dinner. As usual I ordered what I always order (Jibarito steak) and my husband ordered the same. AWFUL!!! I was so disappointed. The steak was chewy with a lot a fat, the plantain was soggy and dry, the tomatoes were old and brown and there were only 3 or 4 onions. My husband's had more lettuce than meat and his meat was the same, chewy with tons of fat! Lastly, the price for this "Latin" sandwich was outrageous! It went from 9.95 to 11.95 within a month and when I asked why it was so much more money than the same Jibarito they serve at lunch I was told because of the plating....really, I'm paying extra for the plating? Anyway, I would reconsider this place not because I had one bad experience but because i spent money thinking I was getting what I always expected only to be let down, so how much more could you be let down for these outrageous prices and not to mention again on Christmas.... read more

I have a challenge for any friends that enjoy cafe con leche at the Logan Square location. I live a block from this location and have enjoyed it for months. The other day, I happened to be driving by the other location (near Leavitt / Milwaukee) and decided to stop in. THIS IS MY CHALLENGE: Go to the other location and try the cafe con leche. It's like a completely different drink. The milk is actually frothed, and the espresso is actually made to order. Many times I have gone to the Logan location, and the espresso is premade. Also, I have NEVER had frothy milk at the Logan location. Part of me wishes I never went to the Bucktown location, now I know what I'm missing. They need to retrain the cafe makers in Logan. read more

First off, I would like to state that the food was very good. That being said, the customer service and professionalism was extremely lacking. I went with three friends and we all requested separate bills. The waiter told us we could pay separately but it would be divided into seats. when we got our bill the drinks were all on seat 1, the coffee on seat 2, the food on seat 3, and a random avacado that we didn't order or receive on seat 4. He assured us it would be ok, just to let him know how much we wanted to pay each and he would handle it. Three of us paid cash and I used a prepaid card. He came back after we watched him swipe my card about 5 times. He said there was a mix up and that he had charged my card for the table next to us. My bill was $27.04 while theirs was $26.25. Without asking me 2 hat I wanted to do or informing me of the mix up, he just refunded the money to the card. I only had $40 on this particular card and had left my cash at home. So now the card won't work due to the fact that my money is now in limbo for 3 business days. He kept demanding I pay him after I explained to him it was his mix up, not ours. He said, in a condescending voice, "That's all you carry with you?" So I asked for the manager. She came over and said that we wouldn't have to cover the remaining balance due to their error. Which would have been fine and the problem would have stopped there, but she then asked "Do you work in the restaurant business?" I said I do, thinking nothing of it. We get up to leave and we hear our waiter say a curse word to us in spanish. Again I let it go and we start to leave. Then the manager comes out and says that we still need to pay for the rest of the bill. We informed her that we gave the waiter the other $30 we owed him(which we did). She then said, in the most snooty way possible, " Oh that's good. I am so glad you work in the business. Good for you." And proceeded to walk back inside. To sum it up, the food was actually very good, the staff was not. Plus the whole situation could have been avoided if he would have just taken the time to convey the situation other than just "handle it" himself. If he had done that, they could have just asked me to charge my card for the remaining $0.79 balance and we all could have moved on with our lives. read more

I've been here a couple of times and the food has always been very good. Over the weekend 6 of us went, the wait was a bit long so we decided to sit at the bar and have some drinks, unfortunately my girlfriend didn't like the drink she ordered and the bartender noticed and gave her a different one free of charge I thought that was pretty cool. The food has always been good I get the same thing every time I go, the jibarito. Stumbled into this quaint Latin fusion restaurant 45 minutes before closing. Ordered an horchata and ribeye jibarito plate. Unfortunately, the white rice and black beans were cold and bland. The Ribeye jibarito was good but a bit greasy and lacked salt. The ribeye was very thin and overcooked, not tender. Horchata was very good. My daughter ordered the chicken tacos plate. Chicken was flavorful. However, the refried beans were cold. the rice was lukewarm but good. Perhaps, We need to go back when it's not too close to closing hours. read more

The breakfast sandwich i ordered lacked a little of flavor which is cause of the four stars but other than that it was great. I've had server problems there in the past but they seem to have had a paradigm shift to providing good guest experience. I had the empanadas with chimichurri last night and I was pleasantly surprised. They were absolutely delish. Also had the jibarito which I guess is the same everywhere, nothing special but definitely not terrible. The menu doesn't offer a whole lot but those empanadas were just the best ever. If you're looking for a quiet place to sit and chat though, well this is not it. It's crowded, it's loud, and it's tight. There were also live musicians playing very lovely latin sounds. Scrumptious food, incredible wait staff, mazing comfort, gorgeous atmosphere--great in all seasons, the decor is fabulous, and the owner, Essam, is a friend and someone who I know has everyone's back. I thank God everyday I live 1 block from Con Leche since it's basically my 2nd home and I live there! Being a lone writer living in a studio I absolutely need a place to go to get out of my small space and this thankfully is it! I eat there practically daily and everyone knows my name, like Cheers. LOL. I bring my laptop and spend hours writing and doing business and grading for my teaching job and emailing from there. Yah maybe someday someone will talk about Allison Fine's novel that was written in the cafe. The 21st century version of James Joyce hanging out at the pub and writing Ulysses. God willing I could write something HALF that good.I love the day menu but I am even more thrilled with the opening of D'Noche and the new liquor license! Woohoo!
