Nothing fancy on the inside --- I thought I accidentally walked into someone's house at first --- but maybe that's part of the charm. It's a bit dark, a bit funky, but unpretentious and authentic, kinda like it's run by a family rather than a marketing firm. The food comes out fresh and the menu offers some interesting twists (not just the usual fare) which for me took it from 3 stars to 4. The service, also, was just wonderful - friendly but pro, all the way. I had the Shirred Eggs (baked and smothered in tomato sauce), a nice change from my usual over easy order, all savory and saucy, and the hash browns they came with just took it to another level; the fluffy pucks are almost mashed on the inside, with a crust-like outer that collapses in your mouth. Perfect to sop up all the tomato sauce with. Seating is tight for breakfast in the downstairs area, and although there is a patio, I'd skip it this time of year; it's all covered with dark material and with no natural light, it feels pretty cave-like out there, IMO. I could have cried since the website showed escargot on the menu but alas, nope... My friend and I were craving French cuisine and I was happy to introduce her to Cafe Du Berry. The very sweet chef was incredible to us. Katy chose the crostini appetizer with beet butter and duck prosciutto with a kiss of cheese. AMAZING... I am very picky with my fish and the sturgeon was so perfectly cooked that I could have cried! The food portions are generous but not ridiculous. My friend got the pork which had wonderfully pan cooked apples and we were sharing looks of happy at the saffron rice and amazing green beans. The chef brought us an amazing piece of custard style French toast which we were very grateful for - that perfect sweetness. It was so great and I do make really great custard style French toast but, of course, this was better! I also could not thank him enough for leading me to the staff bathroom as I am mobility challenged so I dread going up and down stairs. I took my son and granddaughter for Easter brunch and was seriously disappointed. I thought there was going to be a "brunch" menu, there was not. I wanted to order crab Benedict but they had run out of crab by 12:45. I ordered Eggs Benedict but asked to substitute bacon instead of ham. The bacon was burnt almost black. The others ordered a salmon omelette, which was good, and the French toast was fine. All of our meals came with hash browns which were burned on the top and bottom and soggy in the middle..... yech. I was delighted to get fresh fruit with all of our meals and the service was good. I was very disappointed and will not return. The prices definitely don't match the quality of the food. read more

I've driven by this place for years and this is the first time going. Their signature dish is the lemon curd French toast and it is absolutely incredible. I think this is my favorite French toast in the whole wide world. Next time I come, I want to try the pepper steak, which they say is their second most popular dish. This is classic old style very old Portland. Super nice staff and people. Only three people working. So it was slow and relaxed and nice when chatting with friends. I can't believe I've driven past this spot so many times and never been! The steak and eggs here were absolutely incredible, buttery soft steak and incredibly well rounded gravy. But I really could not get enough of the lemon curd French toast- definitely order one for the table. The only downsides on this specific day was they were only taking cash and we had to visit an ATM down the street. This was advertised before putting our name in. But upon sitting down our waiter informed us they were not serving alcohol. Normally this isn't a big deal but given we were out for a Sunday brunch, I wish this was also advertised. I made a list to try out restaurants, that I might be bringing my luncheon group for a luncheon gathering, all through the year. Cafe Du Berry was #1 on my list for 2024 to try out. The seating was outside, with the heat & fan scattered about. We didn't plan on doing that, but luckily we're prepared wearing the correct attire, when we went there, since we've not been there before. We discovered a large formal dining area on the second floor (restroom area) that was not used at the time we were there. It would have been cozier, if we ate upstairs, I avoided sitting near a heat/fan, since my hot flashes goes up or down any moment's time. But I did fine, outside! Hubby, on the other hand, wore his thick winter coat, all during our meal. We ordered Crab Benedict, and Spanish Omelette. Both are huge! They came with hash brown potatoes, several types of fruit. The Spanish Omelette was wonderful, according to hubby 'like the Spanish Omelette I remember when I was a kid!' Also, we got a side of bacon, that was very, very tasty! The Crab Benedict was what I was craving for! We have the right amount of fruit. The OJ was also the right amount size for me. I think, my leftovers was even better the next day! The service was good, friendly. The only negative, that I found, was there were cobwebs on the light fixtures in the restroom. read more

Came here with some friends for brunch and it was phenomenal! The cafe is on the corner of a busy street and has been here for nearly 40 years, making it a local favorite. Their is both inside and outside (covered) seating and both are great options. I went inside with my friends and it felt like family dining--very cozy and intimate, with an open kitchen. My friends and I were all in the mood for benedicts, so we all (except one) tried them. Their portioning is so generous and all of the food tastes amazing, from the sauce to the freshness. We also got their french toast, which is a must try (what they're famous for). It's definitely different than the average french toast (more custardy), but very worth it. The food here is exceptional! Especially weekend brunch. They are known for their Crab Benedic, which I've had and it is loaded with crab and absolutely delicious. Their French Toast, with a bit of lemon curd, is also super popular. On my most recent visit, I opted for the Pepper Steak & Eggs and I have a feeling this will be my go-to when I visit again. The strip steak was cooked perfectly medium and melted in my mouth. The pepper sauce that covered it added to the flavor profile without overpowering. It comes with two eggs ( I chose scrambled with asiago cheese added) and perfectly crisp hash browns, toast or English muffin, and a little bit of fruit. Everything was so tasty and satisfying! I made quite a dent but took half the steak and the English muffin home for dinner. You can drive right by this restaurant and not even know it's there. It's basically in an old house. Inside there are not that many tables. On the first floor, there are maybe three for 2 people with the rest being up a narrow and rickety staircase. They seated us outside which has a roof and makeshift walls with overhead heaters. Originally our table of six was seated in an area with a very small heater and a major wind drift. It was so cold we asked to be moved once another table freed up. It was in an area with three overhead heaters so finally, we were warm. In the spring and summer, this area is fine, but for a 35 degree day in the winter it was challenging. Prices were very reasonable. My steak and eggs was $23; the crab Benedict was $21; and the omelets and waffles in the $11-17 range. The only thing that threw me off was the $5 for coffee. Not an espresso drink, just a basic cup of drip coffee which should have been $2-3 max. Service was great. The young man waiting on us handled all the requests, got everyone's drink and brunch orders right, brought us coffee refills constantly, and kept the water glasses filled. He was attentive but not intrusive. I complimented and thanked him for his great service. Cafe Du Berry is definitely a great brunch spot. You can enjoy delicious food at reasonable prices, and no lines! They also do a big take-out business, a left over from Covid days. When I arrived, there were at least four people picking up to-go orders. Parking is on the street in the neighborhood and was not a problem. read more

This restaurant is tiny but very cute. It is two stories although I only got to see the first floor. They also have outdoor seating. I came on a Sunday morning and did not have to wait to be seated as they weren't super busy. All staff members were really nice but service was a little bit slow. But as previously mentioned in other reviews, the wait time for food is very long. We ordered the peppered steak and eggs, crab omelette, and the French toast. The peppered steak and eggs was the best tasting entree we had. It was seasoned well, and the sauce they put on top is delicious. We asked for extra sauce which they were not able to provide since the sauce is made when the steak is made. So I would recommend to ask for extra sauce when you order. The crab omelette is only offered on the weekends. The omelette was very fluffy and topped with a sauce made with real crab meat. I see a lot of good reviews for the French toast, however, I was not a fan of it. The texture was jello-y and reminded me of pudding. When I think of French toast, I think of crunchy exterior and fluffy interior (my personal preference). And this just did not do it for me. My brother, on the other hand, loved it. Cafe du Berry has the absolute best French toast in town! Their French Toast is soaked in a vanilla custard, then browned on a grill, making it crisp on the outside and soft and luscious on the inside. It's hard to get past the French Toast because it is so orgasmic. If you are ready to try an omelette, I recommend the Scallops with Shiitake mushroom omelette. Again, it's cooked to perfection, so that the omelette itself is al dente, holding up, yet silky moist egg, that somehow is almost ready to drip, but doesn't. The hash browns, some people like, and some don't. I recommend trying them and deciding for yourself. If you order toast, I recommend their house made jam. This week it tasted like Marionberry jam. It came in a small bowl, which I didn't think we would finish, but by the end of the meal, it was gone! The Eggs Benedict is so good, that it sells out sometimes. I prefer the Crab Benedict which is only available on weekends. They have indoor dining upstairs and a few tables downstairs. Their covered patio is heated, and fenced in for privacy from the street. The ambiance on the patio is wonderful, as it wraps around the trees, giving it a warmth and woody feeling. Street parking is relatively good. My boyfriend just moved into a new place only a few blocks away and we were excited to find a spot to grab brunch around the area and stumbled upon Cafe Du Berry! Upon being seated around 1:30, we immediately felt guilty as we thought they stopped serving brunch at 3, and misunderstood that was the time for just lunch, and they stop serving brunch at 2. With both of us being in the service industry, we knew how much of annoyance that can be for staff. We were willing to just order off the lunch menu to not be such a hassle but the staff reassured that it was okay and we were happily served brunch as if it were no problem! Unfortunately, I didn't seem to hear any music playing so it felt a bit awkward chatting without everyone hearing our conversation, but thankfully one of the cooks was humming along to whatever song he had in his head while he was making our meal so we still had some sort of background music. That in particular made me smile and it felt extremely endearing. I'm a young Asian American girl who grew up with an up-and coming family restaurant, and I got the same vibes from Cafe Du Berry. It was both casual, cozy, and charming in the way that there was French inspired murals and decorations, but still a bit of a homey Asian American flair around as well. After we received our order, the cook personally came and checked on how we were doing, and handed us their signature French toast on the house for us to try! It was so sweet and so delicious, as was everything else that we ordered! He got the NY Pepper Steak and Eggs, I got the weekend special Crab Benedict, and we shared a French Waffle! Excited to return w friends for Sunday breakfast. Started off ok when a younger server took our order. Another woman brought our orders; I believe she is one of the owners. I ordered poached eggs w oatmeal and received an omelette w hash browns. I kindly told her what I ordered ... she smirked rudely and took off and brought back two warm hard boiled eggs still in their shell and slammed them down in a small bowl and again stormed off . I asked for a plate as the bowl had to be used for the shells...same reaction. Last, I said ma'am ... "WHAT!"... I couldn't believe that response. I kindly said that I ordered some oatmeal ....and same reaction. I never did say they screeed the eggs up again... they probably don't even know what poached is. By then Injustice wanted to leave quickly as we did. The server did not come around to fill water, coffee or bring the check or pick it up. I have years working in customer service and this was one of the two worst experiences in 25 years. These people need to stay in the back of house and let kind people server the customers. Oh.. although they never got my simple order right the other three we nothing to rave about and all were so in shock we just got Out. It's so easy for new ownership to destroy a past success. The waffles were terrible, as indicated by so many instances of other diners leaving behind 75% of the waffles. And out of maple syrup! The French toast was overdone and the French press coffee was cold... Our server was new at the job. He was trying hard but forgot our asks a couple of times. The ambiance was incredible. Made reservations to come here at 11 AM on a sunny Sunday morning. There was ample street parking close by. We only had to wait a few minutes for our table. It wasn't very busy. The decor/ambiance is casual and rustic - no need to dress up. I got the spinach omelette - which was delicious and my husband got the crab Benedict, which as also very good (only offered on the weekends). The hash browns were meh - seems like they are mass oven baked, but definitely lacked flavor. My toast was also cold. Would've preferred some breakfast potatoes or the option for some greens. The French toast was wonderful, though! Definitely the highlight - crispy outside and almost custard like on the inside.
