Oysters

This a small modern and pretty looking place. We loved some of the food. Not all of it. The service is slow. We waited a while to order. The beet salad was good, but needed salt. No salt and pepper on tables because they think you will like it how they salt it or not salt it. The Oysters and Scallops were yummy! The potato leek soup was dissapointing and not great. The lasanga was good, but small potion and nothing exciting. Service was okay. I think for me the prices are pretty up there for small plates, slow service and inconsistent food.

Finally, after a few years of seeing Davenport pop up on the Portland Dining Month lists, we made it over here. We actually walked by the place without realizing it - their name on the door is very subtle. The dining room inside is cozy - tables are fairly close together. I don't remember hearing music, so it must have been at a low enough volume that we didn't even notice, which is great. Too many places these days blast music at you at dinner. At Davenport the food, service and ambiance were all fantastic. I wouldn't hesitate to come back. We went with the Portland Dining Month menu: beets, scallops, and panna cotta for my mom; radicchio salad, steak and panna cotta for me. We also got an order of the witch nettle dumplings because I was curious. It was quite dumpling-like but it was based on the greens with plenty of cream and sheep cheese. They were good. The beets were really good and came plated with some greens making it look like they'd just been plucked from the garden. The radicchio salad was quite bitter as you'd expect from that plant, but the vinaigrette helped cut some of the bitterness. Scallops were perfect - super rare and just seared on the outside. We loved the fennel salad with grapefruit on the side. The steak was served medium rare - it was well seasoned, tender and easy to cut. For dessert, we both had the panna cotta and I'm glad we didn't have to share. It was the perfect texture, with hints of what we thought were cardamom, and it wasn't too sweet. I'd come back just for this panna cotta. Our server was fantastic. It's been a while since we've experienced such good service in Portland. She was super attentive about water, explained dishes and wines to us, and just checked in on us the right amount. Overall, Davenport checked all the boxes. Can't wait for our next visit!

Portland Dining Month review. First- the staff was excellent! I also had a great beer. First courses of beet was fine, nothing standout. The endive salad was fine, although the endives were a bit bitter, not what I've been used to with endive. The mains-The SEARED scallop was cold, with all the salt on just one quarter of the scallop?! The steak was tiny and flavorless and room temp at best. The "cheese plate" yes there was cheese on the plate manchego perhaps (not great) but it should really have been called a Marcona almond plate. It was a joke. The panna cotta was good. With our two $33 meals, 2 beers and tip we were at just under $100. For that price this was such a let down. I reached out to the restaurant as I hate to leave negative reviews but I did not get a response. This was probably the most disappointing meal I've ever had eating out.

We showed up a half hour early, as an offering to the reservation gods for all the times we've been five minutes late. They were cool enough to accommodate us, and they took this opportunity to bitch to us about the couple that canceled a minute before their reservation. Decent martini, and we had a real nice pinot noir by the glass. Interesting pile of empty wine boxes stacked up behind a large curtain. It appears as if they throw them over there haphazardly, but I'm sure it is probably some sort of art installation. The oysters honestly tasted as though they had been rinsed of their liquor. I've seen people tossed overboard for lesser crimes. They were almost flavorless. Like eating a pickle only to find out it is actually a cucumber. Maybe the shucker goofed, no biggie. It was a bitterly cold night, but not as bitter as the radicchio salad. We felt as though we were being poisoned. I went to the restroom to check my vitals. There was piss all over the seat. Not surprising once I realized I had to hold up the seat with my knee while I was peeing. Luckily they had a slimy bottle of peppermint Dr. Bronner's on the residue caked sink, so I could clean myself up. I'm being sarcastic, but the truth is it didn't really bother me. I actually enjoy putting on nice clothes and rubbing piss all over myself. The scallops tasted fishy. Bad fishy. And this is just my personal preference, but pureed cauliflower does not make a great pairing for sea scallops outside of a hospital cafeteria. I don't understand the need to drizzle scallops in olive oil either, maybe it is too hide the fishiness? We both enjoyed the lamb cheeks. Relatively speaking, they were tasty. I wish our server had recommended we order four servings and nothing else. Just a side note, it is odd that the plates come one at a time as if it is a course meal, even though they advertise it as tapas you should share. Then again, there does not seem to be any cohesion between dishes across the menu. It's like a box of recipes spilled on the floor and they grabbed ten at random. The panna cotta was a bland and boring finish, but at least it was over. We each had one bite and made like trees. On the way home we stopped at Beulahland to salvage the night with a slice of pumpkin pecan pie. Their restroom was refreshingly clean in comparison.

Inventive, tasty food every time. Yep, a little more pricey per kilogram, but your taste buds will sing.

The oysters were followed by dinner. Two of us ordered seared scallops--perfectly cooked. The other two ordered rockfish--delicious. Our server and the other staff were helpful and friendly. We sat inside, although there are also covered picnic tables outside.

Every dish had a perfect combination of flavors and textures. I especially appreciate their selection of mocktails. I had the GPS Said This Is Right and it was full of flavor, subtle bitterness, and texture with a great presentation. A great example of a mocktail that works. It was a joy to drink and was a great start to a great evening. The Andrew's focaccia bread was buttery, salty and heavenly. The oil that came with it was an adventure in itself. Next, I had the Hamachi Crudo. This was one of the most delightful appetizers I have ever had. It was full of a dazzling array of flavors. Simple. Elegant. A feast for the senses. And a joy to eat! I would never think to assemble these ingredients in one dish, but the combination worked splendidly. The quality and freshness of the fish was outstanding. For the entrée I had the Halibut. It was perfectly done and wonderfully presented and also full of a wonderful combination of flavors and textures. There was no way I was going to leave without checking the dessert menu and I hit the jackpot on that also. I had the Panna Cotta. It was light and fresh, bursting with summer flavor, and textured as well. It was the perfect dessert to round out a wonderful evening. My feeble words do not do justice to how outstanding each one of these dishes were! The menu was so full of appealing dishes that it was difficult to choose just one. I also heard great things about the Rockfish. I guess that means I will just have to come back! The space is very cozy and appealing, wrapped in windows. There's also plenty of outside seating. And the service from the bar was terrific. Reservations are recommended since this place is so popular. But they also have strong support for walk-ins. I stopped by on a whim this night before they opened, saw the line, and figured I'd try it and see what happens. After about a half hour wait I got in! Jacqueline is now on my very short list of absolute favorite restaurants in PDX!

Also, in spite of being slammed (there were more than 50 drinks lined up on the bar, at one point), the staff was friendly and efficient. In spite of 5 star food, they are also very casual. My first night, I enjoyed "bubbles and bivalves," as well as smoked steelhead, steelhead lox and salmon tartare. All of it was amazing. The second drink was a local cherry-infused vodka, which ended up tasting almost like an Old Fashioned. Not what I expected, but good. The second night, I savored a half dozen Washington oysters and a savory, umami-drenched cioppino. A local Pinot noir (Crawley) was the perfect accompaniment.

While we were there, it was dining month - so we had a little prefix menu. Oyster trio to start with some bubbles! Wonderful start, but they sure give a lot of fresh horseradish! Salmon dip platter was perfect! Chicory Salad with fried oysters was good, but too much radicchio for me, so bitter! I loved the bread and it's complementary! Lemon Raspberry dessert was so-so. I would come back to try more!

You walk in, and they have a small shelf with ingredients that they use in their food. Everything is so clean and spacious. You know you're going to walk into an amazing meal. We were seated right away, and the wait staff is incredibly friendly and professional. They are so knowledgeable about the menu and gave great direction and advice. Now on to the food: I was simply blown away! They have a happy hour from 4-6 with $2 oysters! The fish was so clean and cooked to perfection! The leek salad was beautifully dressed and came with the most perfect gooey eggs. But the star of the show was the beans; incredibly tender and in the most amazing southern-style collard greens sauce. Everything was so fresh and different! The meal was simply spectacular! I truly cannot wait to go back and try everything. Chef Tim is simply a GENIUS who clearly cares deeply about his food. Not to mention how kind and generous he is as a human being. Thank you so much for one of the most memorable meals I have had in a VERY long time!!

The restaurant itself, like the name, has a very neighborly feel, with a tiny market at the entrance. Nothing pretentious about the interiors. The menu is the type that just list ingredients so it's hard to really figure out what you're going to get, but overall the approach is very Pacific Northwest with quality ingredients. But what's enticing is really the plating, that comes out very high-end. I also should note that I came early, so it wasn't super crowded, which helps because the food came out quickly and hot from the kitchen. I think that helped. It's nice they have happy hour oysters, which is getting harder and harder to fine these days. (They're at $2 an oyster for HH). For the food, I tried the Oregon albacore with new potatoes, zucchini, and salmoriglio. This was a meaty dish that was like a terrine with the tuna and potatoes turned into a cylindrical tower and then topped with the slices of zucchini in a pattern. It was comforting and filling. You could almost get this and a salad, but I wanted to also try the nettle and ricotta gnocchi with mushrooms. This was also a beautifully plated dish that felt like mushroom foraging in the forest. The nettle made the gnocchi green and overall this was my favorite dish for the creativity and flavor. There were only two dessert items, and one was sorbet, so I didn't get any. But overall it was a really creative and delicious plates in a relaxed, casual environment in Belmont.
