Gino's is an authentic Italian neighborhood spot in the Sellwood area. We came on a busy dinner night and waited about 30-45 minutes for a table, but once we were seated, the service was quick and attentive! My partner at the time ordered the classic spaghetti and meatballs, and that was definitely the star. The meatballs were huge and tender! I had the rigatoni Alfredo, which was good, but I'd order the spaghetti next time. We also started with the clams, and they were delicious - plenty of sauce for the dipping bread. The restaurant had lots of seating with a cozy, dimly lit atmosphere that feels like an old-school Italian restaurant. The spaghetti was kind of inedible to me due to the amount of salt in it although the flavor was good. I really couldn't eat more than a few bites of it. The cioppino was good. The seafood in it tasted fresh and cooked to perfection. Ordered the grandma jeans for my kiddo and that was good as well. Now, let's talk about the service we. We sat at the bar side and it was pretty loud and there were a ton of people just walking by and standing around. Our server seemed way too busy and we couldn't get her attention a few times when we needed her. She never came to check on us once and only ordered 1 cioppino instead of the 2 we ordered. They delivered one plate of it along with everything else so we asked if there was another one coming and she said yes (the server didn't deliver the food, there were other girls that did that). A couple minutes later, the server came back and apologized saying she thought we only ordered one. When it was time to pay, I asked her to split the bill in half but she didn't do that either. She did like a weird 30/70 split. I even walked to the card machine with her and told her right there and she said "yes I can do that" Either the restaurant is severely understaffed, server was not competent or might a mixture of both but my experience was not good. Loved my experience at Gino's. Heard great things so I had to check it out. Made reservations just in case it was busy, at 8pm on a Saturday,it was still busy so that worked out great. Love the dim light atmosphere, very romantic for some but also very family friendly. You can also sit outside. The bar was a plus, staff was very friendly always checking in us. Food takes a while to come out so try those appetizers they're delicious. Appetizer, we got the Clams best thing ever especially with that delicious broth. Lovely restaurant and ambience, really enjoyable food and experience! Massive portions with an easy 3 meals total for each dish, making it a great value for the experience. My favorite dish is the pork ragu, I also enjoyed the spaghetti bolognese and did not mind the spinach lasagna special. One thing missing in all of the dishes for me was spice. When I ate leftovers I added some chili flakes and various spicy sauces and it really took them to the next level. Overall, the flavors had some room for improvement for me, but it was a very authentic Italian restaurant with large portions and very interesting dishes and flavor combos. read more

This review is a formality, Ginos is an institution. The only thing better than the ambience here is the food. For a very old school place, the menu has been fluid over the years. Some changes better than others but you have to appreciate the flexibility. I'm not someone who drinks but the wine list here looks outrageous. I've had almost everything on the menu, so I don't really have the attention span to tell you about all of it. I'll say this, always get the Ceasar to start. If they are serving the hamburger, don't walk just run. Best pasta dish is tough but the pork ragu was wildly tasty. The steaks are tier 1. The desserts I mean say no more. That will be all. Felt like Italian food, and decided to try Gino's. Were very impressed. Got an order of bread which was EXCELLENT --crispy crust, interior chewy and full of holes, redolent of garlic oil. Came with a huge amount of olives--could only eat 1/2! Shared a beet salad, which we also couldn't finish. Lots of beets, Gorgonzola, chopped nuts, greens, dressed perfectly. Lastly shared spaghetti funghi, which was the best I've ever tasted--lots of earthy garlic olive oil flavors. The only detraction was our seating--our table for two was literally back to back with a booth with 2 guys and 2 kids, who all had loud voices and wanted to prove it. Amazing all around. This was our first time here and it won't be our last. Our group had spaghetti and meatballs, the salmon entrée, and the pork chop or delicious the spaghetti and meatballs a huge portion. Lots of meatballs-- we took about 1/3 of it home. From the amazing pork chop, to a big beautiful bowl of mussels, to a perfect plate of pasta, you'll always find something to satisfy whatever you're craving. But here's the (not so secret) secret. The totality of experience here is delightful. Our server, Avery , was well informed and helpful both about food and wine pairings. With a very approachable and friendly demeanor, he never left us waiting to have our needs met. Probably one of the best service experiences I've had in a very long time. Food wise also some of the best and most perfectly cooked pasta we've had in a very long time. We had the Bolognese with Papa deli, it has kind of a subtle nutmeg aftertaste that is probably more than I want to do on a regular, but very good. The fungi spaghetti had no discernible tarragon, but nonetheless was a very good version of this dish with a nice variety of mushrooms and a light cream sauce. And then the ambience. I mean it was Christmas and the extra greenery with Christmas lights made it even more cozy but just as a standard level of lighting and sound and comfort and seating I would say this is definitely good for families or date night or just a quiet conversation with a friend over good food and wine. We're fans and we will be back. PS the ladies room has a fantastic montage of flowers and fruit that makes it worth a visit all by itself. I ordered the Penne Bolognese. Our server mentioned this was a popular dish and had undertones of nutmeg. The penne was cooked al dente, but the sauce lacked flavor. The vibes are IMMACULATE. What looks like a worn, pewter door at the corner of the block opens up into a rustic and quirky interior with quaint, tiled floors and captivating murals. If I came with no one else I would've been satisfied eating my meal and drinking in the sights of the restaurant. The food was fantastic. The "Cioppino" in particular was a warm, hearty noodle soup with plenty of seafood. Loved the inclusion of salmon in the mix. It was so savory that we used our bread to soak up every last drop. Would've licked the bowl clean if there had been anything left! Thankfully there were plenty of veggie options too. The veggie lasagna tasted incredibly fresh and zesty. We were fighting over the last few bites at our table. Given how busy it is on a weekday, how familiar the servers are with the customers, and how much the place bubbles with positive energy, it's clear that Gino's has been and will continue to be a hub for the Sellwood community for many years. Absolutely massive portions and great quality! Thankfully came here with an appetite because they bring it hard on portion size. Clams an an appetizer came quick and so many on the plate. The bread was fresh and the buttery garlic sauce it came to dip in was so good. We worked to get as much out of it, even after the clams were gone using the bread to dip in. We couldn't pass up trying the spaghetti & meatballs here. The meal size definitely worked for two people and thankfully that's how many we had in the party. Meatballs were the size of softballs and nicely flavored and savory. The sauce and noodles were also rich. I'll start off by saying this place has HISTORY. During our time here we asked about the restaurant and the building itself. From the outside you wouldn't know it, but it doesn't look like an AMAZING Italian tavern and bar. From what we were told,the restaurant itself has been around for over 30 years while the building itself has been around much much longer. A lot of the interior has been kept in its original form, it used to be a theater! The bar itself was imported from New Orleans and it's MASSIVE, and totally fits the vibe. You walk in and are immediately transported back to the 1940's~50's era and it's endearing. The Ambiance is key. You get swallowed up in it and you're in your bubble with your party - I don't know how else to describe it. It's pretty Charming!!! We took a booth and ordered our food - the service is quick, they know the menu inside and out. Passing the bar I couldn't help but notice the copper mugs so I already knew I needed a Mule (DELICIOUS!!). Got the Ceasar, and the Pesto, the others ordered the Ravioli and the Ragu, with a side of garlic bread. The lunch menu was small, but this is a GOOD thing. They do the few things on the menu, EXTREMELY well. Being the first time here, and seeing /smelling how delicious the food was we all forgot to take pics and just dug in. The pasta and salads were on point! I have to say my Pesto was INCREDIBLE. Creamy loads of Pesto and garlic. With sun-dried tomatoes mixed in. The presentation was 10/10, beautifully plated, wow. And so rich, so good - clean plates at the end. To be honest, we don't know too many Italian places to eat at, but now we do!!! Pro tip, this is a small spot in town where there is a lot of people just walking around, parking will most likely be in the neighborhood a couple blocks away. BUT, the walk to Gino's was actually nice. LOTS of small local shops to explore for later. After finishing we all decided, that we'd have to come back for dinner Soon. Wow finally this WOP has found real Italian cuisine in the PDX metro and it's GINO's without a doubt hands down the way Nana used to make it in the old country. Family style seating friendly people but ladies and gentlemen that sauce has been in thr huge bar cooking all day!! That's why they don't open till four! You gotta try grandma Jeans Penne with pork ribs, spicy Italian sausage and pepperoni MMM more than a meal even if you are a spirited eater, portion size is phenomenal. Beet salad with vinaigrette good and good for you plus it's bigger than the Seinfeld big salad. Reasonable does not begin to describe the affordability so order one for dinner and one to go for tomorrow you won't be sad you did. Italiano done proper! For Apps: We started with the caesar salad (really yummy, you can tell it's homemade, get this!), then the steamed clams which came with rustic bread on the side for dipping. The clam sauce was tasty, had a TON of fresh garlic which I'm not complaining about (love garlic), but a little too salty for my liking. Typically when I get steam clams I drink all the juices/soup leftover but this one was too salty for me to do that. Other than that, really generous portions of clams, so still would recommend. For cocktails: husband ordered an old fashioned (but they put it in a glass with regular ice chunks you'd get in iced water, so it quickly watered down the drink......). I got a gin cocktail on their specials menu, it was really good! For main: we got the Paccheri (lots of fennel sausage, large pieces of pasta noodles, unique!) which we pretty good but reminded me of eating a sausage pizza, and also ordered a mushroom pasta with penne instead of spaghetti noodles (personal preference) which was absolutely delicious, would recommend!!! Both pastas came with their rustic bread which was nice! Overall, really pleasant experience, staff was attentive and friendly, the decor was cute and traditional Italian, you could tell this place has been here for a long time and folks love coming back here based on how full it was on a Monday night! I have always enjoyed meals at Gino's. Friends and I have been dining there virtually ever since they opened their doors, and in the past we were weekly guests every Friday evening. The three of us regularly had Cesar salad, main dishes and shared a dessert. One evening their dessert menu contained many of our favorites, and after the Cesar salad, we shared three different desserts, an after-dinner drink and coffee! Simply phenomenal. We just moved back to the Hillsboro area after 17 years, and we have been looking for some great Italian food. After a couple of disappointing efforts in the area, I remembered Gino's from many years ago. It was my wife's BD and I wanted to be sure to treat her to a great meal. And that it was. Theresa had a Negroni to start off and I had the Maple Old Fashioned. They were so good. Then we had the baguette with many olives in an olive oil. Again, so good. She had the Mixed Greens Salad, and I had the classic Caesar Salad. Both were perfectly dressed. Theresa had the Puttanesca and I had Grandma Jean's. Incredible. We had leftovers after the meal, as the portions are generous. And of course, the wine list is huge. We had a great Borolo that accompanied all of the food perfectly. The setting was so special. I had logged it was Theresa's BD when I made the reservation, but nothing was done, which was the best for her. The server Josh was fine. He is low-key, but timing with the entire team was right on. Was so looking forward to dinner at Gino's but unfortunately, our experience was pretty poor all-around. Our server was very impersonal, rushed and messed up our order. I know this happens but when our food was served one of our four guests received the wrong dish. Server admitted that she pushed the wrong button. Nearly 20 minutes later with the rest of us nearly finished, the correct dish was delivered. Again, this happens but no offer fix the situation (glass of wine, dessert...nothing). My steak ordered at medium was cooked well done and my wife who order pasta and marinara was still charged full price for spaghetti and meatballs (no exceptions). Friday lunch...we came in through the bar. The word is Lady Gaga was spotted at the bar one nice Portland evening. Did not see her but several people sitting at the bar and tables along the wall. The pushed a couple of boxes that were near the path. A full wine rack stood up against the wall area they looked like old bottles from various small Italian wineries. A large circle shaped container full of wine corks. The tables were old style wood various shapes, round rectangle square - cozy setting. A few booths as well. Many Italian like memorabilia on the wall. We were seating where we would like to be...the waiter had some styles as the service is always exceptional some of the best service in Portland. Service- Ringside and Nostrana come to mind, Canard. One thing I like about Gino's you can get Barbaresco and Barolo by the glass here...I opted for a Negroni. It was a perfect. Water was poured and a carafe left at the table. We chosse the beet steamer clams. Perfect as well, the broth had plenty of garlic. A few slices of toasted garlic bread lined the rim of the bowl. Main was a beet salad and the ravioli. Beet salad had mixed greens some curly endive with a selection of nuts mixed in the bowl. The flavors mixed well we chatted about how we expected more beets but we both admitted we never looked past the work beets on the menu...and made our choice. It was exceptional and tasty. I remember balsamic vinegar lingered. Choosing that over the Cesar. Ravioli big oblong flat ravioli stuffed with cheese in a pool of yes buttery oil lots of herb flavors hit you. Overall some of the best ravioli maybe heavy on the buttery oil. Lunch like that sets you back $80. Service was friendly not standing over you but everything we could ask for dishes came out with great timing. One of the wait staff held the door for us as we strolled out on 13th ave. I really wanted to like this place, but it unfortunately didn't hit expectations. This was my first time visiting and I brought my daughter to celebrate her 18th birthday. The reviews of this place and the menu looked good, so we figured it would be a special treat. Right off the bat, the place is deceptive from the outside. The building looks old and run down, and there is no obvious sign letting you know you're at the right place. It's got a dingy old door that looks like some weird side door that you go in. As soon as you enter, there is a huge bar and then a lot of tables they've really squeezed in. They seated us at a booth right next to the swinging kitchen door, which is also weird bc it isn't located in the back or where it's not in the way of customers / walking employees. The restaurants was playing music and generally had a lot of noise. After my daughter and I were seated, she started showing me a digital birthday card her grandma sent her. As we were watching it, a server came up and asked that we put our "media away" as it could bother other patrons. While I understand that people often have their phones out and looking at Tik Tok or similar, it was rude of the server to just assume and also even ask us to put it away. The restaurant was not quiet by any means, nor is it fancy where you wouldn't dare pull your phone out. I told the server we were watching a birthday card and he did apologize, but it definitely turned us off right from the get go. He said this BEFORE he even greeted us. It was bizarre. I want to note, in their menu, they specify that they add 4% onto your bill if you pay with card. Why. Why is a 4% non-cash adjustment added. The prices of the dishes are already astronomical and they expect people will pay cash?? Nobody has cash on them anymore. I thought this was crazy in and of itself. I ordered the shrimp starter and my daughter got the mussels. They came out relatively fast and came with a side of crusty bread. The shrimp was just okay, nothing special. My daughter did love the mussels...they were HUGE. For our entrees, I ordered the vongole, and my daughter the spaghetti and meatballs. Neither of these dishes were spectacular. The vongole was basically like spaghetti in soup and void of much flavor. The spaghetti was basically 5 giant meatballs with some spaghetti noodles added in there. The noodles in both of the dishes did not taste homemade...they tasted like regular packaged noodles. Overall, the food was lacking. We didn't finish our meals, minus the bread which was good. The food is also overpriced. $22 for some spaghetti noodles, watery broth, and clams! Nope nope. The server did feel bad about the cell phone thing and comped us our drinks, so that was appreciated.
