Signing a waiver was a process requiring following one site to another, to send an email, then sign the waiver via another link in the email. I looked up the event on other sites for more info, but they've varied over the years and have quite different info so I figured I'd just be surprised. I was under the impression there was more involvement from the blind community than there really is, as a blind poet, musicians, ambassadors are noted. At the event, we attended the second showing. The first one ran late and many people were outside complaining that their event started very late so they were unhappy it was being cut short. Our doors opened around 8:35 (supposed to be 8:30) but inside there was no real line, and the waiting area was open and very disorganized. 1 woman was checking all people in- apparently tickets could be purchased from Groupon or another site too so she had 3 lists and most people had to sign the waiver still, and they require watching you turn your cell off, so it took a long time. We used the restroom beforehand as recommended- it was old, dingy and small. We searched for the wine that was advertised as included in the event- there was no wine, instead kombucha and cacao. 1 partially full glass was free, $3 for more. Chocolate candy was laid out with tiny labels on a side table. It was far too sweet with the drinks. All volunteers we saw were sighted. A blind ambassador eventually welcomed us- Garrick, and he was amusing and informative. We were eventually lead inside and seated sometime after 9. We were lead by group hand on each other's shoulders and walked through several layers of blankets at the entrance- several people were very claustrophobic in the blanket tunnel, and it was unnerving. Once in the room, it was pitch black- we were lead well to the table and helped to find our chair and described the table briefly. We were a group of four but we got split up inside where 2 were together and 2 at other end of the table and we couldn't really hear each other because the noise became so much. There was no further explanation except to eat. We'd been told there was bread and butter to share. We located it- it was fine, cheap white bread and butter. Hard to butter bread in the dark, that was an experience. We knew nothing else of the food except it was vegetarian and gluten free. There were potatoes, a salad, some kind of rice like dish with coconut milk it seemed, and some veggies like peppers with a crispy topping on it. We were literally never told what we were eating or who had made it. There were also grapes and strawberries. Then chocolate mousse for the dessert. It was mediocre food at best. And served on a plastic plate, paper napkin, plastic utensils, with a cup of water. It was all played when we were seated- food was all around the same temp, and the water was warm. I wondered how long it had all been sitting out for. Portions were also small. The Q&A session from the ambassadors was the best part- I liked hearing from them, and would have preferred more of their stories. They were engaging and funny together. But it ended too soon and it was on to the music. Rosh, the lead performer, is sighted. It was unclear who else performed with him, and if they were sighted. Rosh dropped several curse words, though it was advertised a kid friendly event. The sing a long song was cheesy and got way too loud. They did 3 songs- 1 would've been enough. I thought there would be other performers based on the websites but there wasn't. Otherwise, the time was spent talking with your table. The noise in the room got overwhelming, it echoed so bad and was made worse in the dark. Afterwards, many people said they'd had to put their fingers in their ears to avoid the noise. Overall, it was a unique experience and some fun to explore food and meet others in the dark. The part that was fun was overshadowed by too much time with mediocre drinks and food, noise and disorganization. The price is not worth what you get. The portion of it that is blind awareness was my favorite part and too short- I would just attend a different event or donate money elsewhere.

My wife previously heard about The Portand Blind Cafe and we already had some discussions about what it would be like to dine in complete darkness with a large group of people. We were both quite excited when I won the tickets. (Thanks, Don B.) I truly didn't know what to expect. I am quite an experienced late night raider of the fridge, practiced and adept at eating in the dark--or so I thought--but what I imagined wasn't even close to what I experienced. The event took place at Saint David of Wales Episcopal Church. (Oddly, there was an AA meeting going on in the main church building. Not quite so "anonymous" with a 100 plus Blind Cafe diners wandering by, I thought.) The event organizers were quite mysterious about exactly where they had everything set up. I assumed it was in some kind of auditorium or hall--most churches have one. Each table group was led inside via conga line by a blind server. After navigating through several black-out curtains, we were in total darkness. TOTAL PITCH DARKNESS. So dark, you don't even know if your eyes are open or closed. So dark, your world immediately shrinks to arm's length. We found our chairs and discovered plates filled with food directly in front of us. I have to admit that I didn't like it one little bit. I was so uncomfortable and claustrophobic that I considered leaving. After a short mental battle with myself, I was able to calm down and accept the experience. I tried to envision the size of the room and my location by the sounds of the voices around me. One interesting thing that I immediately discovered is just how significant my hearing loss has become and how much I make up for it with sight. Hearing aids are not long off for this old man. I never do well with noisy crowds. The background noise makes it difficult for me to hear any close-up conversation, so I was essentially deprived of two senses. I fumbled around for the food on my plate. I found an olive. I found some nuts. There was some kind of cake thing topped with something. There was a salad. KALE! I recognized the taste of kale. Otherwise, I could have been eating anything. Great. I discovered that my sense of taste is also sub par. I was really glad my wife was with me. She has an amazing palette, let me tell you. She identified everything we were served, right down to the spices used. The chef came out and told us what we were eating AFTER the meal, and my lady was right on with every tidbit. And they truly were tidbits. Very small--although quite tasty--portions were served and I heard some folks complaining that they were still hungry when we were leaving. The meal was vegetarian and I liked it. Frankly, there was so much going on, the food was the last thing on my mind. At one point, the servers introduced themselves and took questions from the crowd. This was the best part of the evening for me. I'm not even going to go into detail. Anything I write about it would be insufficient and not even come close to adequately describing the moment. Suffice it to say that sometimes every one of us can use a reminder that life is a struggle and we all have our problems, but our difficulties don't have to define us--unless that's what we want. There was a concert provided by a group of musicians from Colorado. Interestingly, with the crowd quiet and the music coming from one area, I was able to actually get some spatial bearings. I started to feel comfortable and finally relaxed. The music was toe-tapping fun but by the time they finished the last tune, I was ready to go. My wife had a great time. She is highly adaptable and can make friends anywhere--even in the dark. We were told that they will be having another event in June. I highly recommend. I found out a few things about myself. Bastion definitely is part of what makes Portland's gluten free scene great! The location is in a beautiful small neighborhood in the city. Bastion sits among some small businesses and has the feel of a cozy business in a house. My absolute favorite thing about Bastion was their fried chicken. It was crispy and delicious. Often times gluten free items lack a bit of substance when it comes to how it feels, but the nice meaty chicken pieces really helped offset that in the case of the chicken sandwich. It was fulfilling to eat and would do a great job filling up anyone who is hungry. My wife went with the waffles and they were great. They were presented beautifully with a gorgeous flower garnish. But, we decided to eat here anyway! We ate outside, in a nice weather, no flies! We sat down, then we ordered from the menu, a Fried Chicken Sandwich and a Tarragon Chicken Salad Sandwich. All of the food in this restaurant is gluten free. And the sandwich bread, while tasty, were pretty hard to chew. Mine specially, I couldn't even cut the thinly sliced crust with MY knife & fork! That's saying a lot! The sandwich came with a nice serving of green salad. The restroom is clean. Service was good. Water is self-serve and there's hardly any room at the station to set down a small cup, when filling a second cup.
