This small cafe is cute. The servers were genuinely nice and didn't rush us in ordering or billing. My friend asked for the banana-Nutella waffle sans Nutella (weirdo) and the kind server asked if she'd maybe like strawberries instead. No up charge. It was unexpected and delightful. I got the Benedict with bacon and tomato and added avocado. Personally, I had to add a pinch of salt but your taste may vary. It came with cottage potatoes, cantaloupe, pineapple, and grapes. The fruit and potatoes was wonderful since most places make you choose between the two. There was a delicious looking pastry cases of very reasonable prices but I decided to save that for next time. Same with some of their cocktails. Been a long time since I've seen $10 cocktails and after I paid $7 for just cranberry juice, I regretted my choice. I came here on a Saturday morning and was just in time before the rush. I was between a few different options and wish I'd gone with the Tres Leches waffle. The buttermilk pancakes were good, but nothing special. Based on the ratings for this place, I was expecting a little better. The fruit and whipped cream were good toppings, but the pancakes themselves were nothing spectacular. The scrambled eggs were good, but also nothing particularly special. The service was lacking, considering no one even asked to take our order until we'd been sitting over 30 minutes. I'm pretty sure we never got our water refilled, either. A rare failure for Yelp. Food was only okay. Cute café at the edge of Sellwood. Nice little patio by the street. But the food was only okay, and pricey for what was offered. Biscuits and gravy lacked flavor or enough sausage to deliver on what should be a hearty meal. Chilaquiles was overpowered by the sour green Chile salsa that lacked depth. Was hard to get our server's attention when we were ready to order, and never got refills on coffee without again having to flag her down. Just gave up after a while. Can't recommend it, when other places in Portland make an effort to earn your business. read more

Been there three times. The food is fantastic! I absolutely love those waffles! The ambiance is really good, and it has a great outdoor seating area. Service is really good. The only thing I did not appreciate is their coffee. It is too light, it almost tastes watered down, and it does not go well with such great tasting food. Harney street cafe is my go to spot to take my friends while they are visiting in town. It's a charming restaurant. It doesn't necessarily have a restaurant or cafe vibe and it can be a little off putting while coming inside, but what they lack in decor they pick up in flavor. Their waffles, pancakes, and sweet breakfast items are delicious and I normally avoid sweet breakfast foods. They are accommodating to food allergies (just ask). read more

I'm here for work but I love coming out here to Portland because of the food! ugh! this place was so cute, a little hidden gem. The inside was small, but super cute and clean. The service was great and food was amazing. I got the "Stake and eggs" they allowed me to sub the potatoes for a side salad. My dish came out quick, we didn't wait long. Their jam was home made and perfect, wasn't toooo sweet and you can just tell it was fresh. You know the food is good when you aren't ever talking while eating. You really can't get a better breakfast than this! Everything is house made with quality ingredients. We splurged with the adult breakfast beverages, too (so good!). The homemade sausage stole the whole show, even more than the hollandaise sauce. We ate every bite and even tasted the mango jam that was on the table. Has great outdoor seating but managed to snag a spot inside with a scrumptious view of the delectable food emerging from the kitchen and well-stocked baked goodies case. The waffle underneath the mountain of fried chicken was one of the best I've ever had. Light on the inside with a perfect crunchy crust and delicious. The chicken had some zing to it and the breading was just okay. But definitely flavorful. The delicious breakfast burrito my husband ordered was basically the size of a newborn and had house made chorizo. Most everything is made in house and you can totally tell. I feel grateful for having eaten here. They seem to undersell their amazing and rare aspects. Here's what we noted and loved. Perfectly poached eggs underneath a well balanced light and creamy hollandaise sauce. Burger arrived between homemade buns that were obviously never bagged and bought off a shelf. Housemade strawberry preserves. Homemade whipped cream. Homemade hot sauces (the orange sauce was sweet and spicy and perfect for fries). Fruit was fresh and ripe. They even served peeled orange slices, like what restaurant does that? There were other surprises, too. Once in a while you come across a spot that you instantly feel the desire to support and champion and this place is that rare gem. read more

An often overlooked restaurant in sellwood south of bybee. They have seating inside and out and the service is always attentive. Bertie Lou's down the street is quirky and crowded and good. Harney street is not quirky and always easy to get a seat and also very good. It's worth a visit, especially on a crowded weekend day where many places are overrun with people. read more

My wife and I were meandering a bit during the morning, not sure where to go for brunch, and eventually found ourselves in Sellwood, here at the Harney Street Café. From the outside, the place is charming: a converted house with a cute covered patio, and it seemed popular: almost every table within was occupied, as were most out front. Fortunately, there was one available, so we were seated immediately, although the "host", if you can call him that, waved us in and pointed us to our table, like an airport runway marshaler. The restaurant's interior décor is Spartan, to say the least, with nothing adorning the mustard yellow walls, and the functional, yet rudimentary tables and chairs, spaced liberally apart from one another, gives the whole place a cold, empty feeling. If you're looking for a warm, intimate place to bring a date, look elsewhere: function favors form here. Perhaps the layout is a response to following COVID protocols, which, if that's the case, they're nailing it, because it would be difficult to operate in a more clinical manner, on purpose. The first server who approached, when we greeted him, didn't respond at first. I'm not sure if he just didn't hear us, was distracted, or just rather aloof. He, like our "host", wasn't particularly conversational. He asked us for our drink orders, then disappeared, to be replaced by a female server, who was far more sociable, for the rest of our visit. She explained the various specials, took our order, and checked in on us frequently thereafter. I was feeling a bit finicky that morning, not wanting anything breakfast related, so I went with the Blackened Chicken Caesar Salad, and a cup of the soup du jour ("it's the soup of the day"..."mmm, that sounds good, I'll have that!"), a pork meatball soup. My wife took the server's suggestion, and had one of the specials, the sausage biscuits and gravy eggs benedict: an unholy union of two of her breakfast favorites! Sadly, from here, the whole experience continued its march of mediocrity. My wife remarked that, somehow, her entrée was rather bland, saved only by a liberal application of some in-house habanero hot sauce (that's my girl!). Over in Greensville, my salad was a bit on the dry side, requiring an extra dose of dressing, and the blackened chicken wasn't blackened at all, but rather reddish. I mean, it was cooked thoroughly, but it was certainly not carbonized in any way, shape or form. The pork meatball soup, though, was fantastic, and something I would definitely order again. The Harney Street Café isn't a bad restaurant, but they definitely need a tune-up in a few areas, in order to operate as a well-oiled machine. The servers, the interior décor, and the food itself could all benefit from a dash of personality. As is, there's nothing that makes this restaurant stand out from its competitors, and in Sellwood, there's plenty of alternatives willing to take risks and put in the effort to achieve excellence. I don't see Harney Street lasting long if they're not willing to step up to the plate. read more

Just off the beaten path in Sellwood means less waiting and a more relaxing atmosphere. Patio is covered & lovely on a sunny day. No espresso but the coffee is outstanding & your cup is always full.
