I'm one to support any small buisness I can. I've been coming for years since before living in Syracuse but as the years have gone by so hasn't my taste for this these shops, the lattes have gone down hill and half the time I don't think there's anything other than hot milk in a cup, the recent change of the menu has also really turned my desire to stop in some great items that have been around for sometime now vanished and I'm sure I'm not the only one not to thrilled as the new pockets aren't amazing. I know staffing has been a struggle for everyone but a good team can make a good business and sadly over priced coffee/foods made poorly, is not the answer I won't be stopping in anymore I've tried and tried but it's just not getting any better I think it's getting worse and it's not just one specific location it seems to be a trend across them all. It's like playing the lottery it's a one in a million chance you might get a mocha that tastes like a mocha. read more

Friendly service, great baked goods and excellent coffee. A delight and treasure in an otherwise grey syracuse. The scent of roasted coffee wafts through the air as your eyes are drawn to the very inviting display of panini, cold drinks and baked goods. Cafe Kubal has the best coffee in the Syracuse area. The upstate grinder sandwich is absolutely to die for (house roasted turkey, bacon, spiced apples, cheddar cheese, and house made maple mayo on ciabatta bread. So good that I could drink the maple mayo if they sold it separately. (The barista named Hannah makes the best grinder, always makes sure the bacon is crispy and the mayo is plentiful). Cafe Kubal is a very successful coffee chain in Syracuse. They have a well deserved reputation for high quality coffee. They feature pour-overs, which is a freshly made cup of coffee. Full flavor with none of that old acidic taste you get which traditional brewed coffee. This is as good as it gets. The best coffee/espresso drinks in Syracuse. Literally the best. Very well made almond milk cappuccino and lattes. Baristas make drinks with care and attention. The drinks are almost better than Syracuse deserves. Try the almond milk cappuccino and he almond latte. Also a great turmeric ginger tea. This location of Kubal has the best drinks and is the smallest: nice but small and few tables. A few overly loud customers make it hard to stick around for a 2nd drink. 4 to 5 stars: all other cafes in central New York take note. read more

Whether roasted, pressed, or brewed, Kubal is among the best coffee in town. Great lattes. They also produce their own vanilla extract and some other local yummies. With a $20 annual membership, you can buy 12 oz of beans for $8 instead of $12, which is a steal. I'm there every 2-3 weeks. Good sweet items, great sandwiches, and great healthy-delicious soups, too. You can sit here to eat your food but it's not really a place to hang out. This is my local cafe, and I could not be happier. From the usually smiling ladies/gentleman at the register, to the person making the coffee beverage, I like the service here. They make an effort to know their regulars, and offer a pleasant conversation while waiting. I was lucky enough to get a mini espresso lesson from Chris Deferio while he made my Americano yesterday morning. The coffee is my favorite in Syracuse, although the other local roasters are pretty great as well. The espresso is smooth and balanced, and their coffee is roasted very nicely. I prefer the dark roast at CK vs the medium, but that is personal preference. I am not a huge latte person, but I have enjoyed the few I have purchased there. The price is a little higher than the national chains, but that is to be expected, and I do not mind paying for a superior product that is local. Recommended fully. read more

Sandwich review: Turkey Club- the bread was not toasted, so the sandwich got really soggy really fast, and was totally not enjoyable to eat. Also, the bacon was not at all crispy and almost looked uncooked. This sandwich defiantly has great potential- God flavor and the roasted turkey was great. I can't believe there's only one other review of this place! As a self-proclaimed coffee snob, I can say with confidence this is one of the best lattes I've ever had in my life. Even some of the syrups are made from scratch (maybe all of them are, but the vanilla definitely is). I usually get a latte with vanilla and my hubby gets an Americano (9 shots of espresso! ::jitters::) though they have a zillion other yummy things on the menu. They have some foods like egyptian hummus (home made) and sometimes there are organic chicken or vegetarian wraps in the cooler. They also sell Purity Ice Cream (but I'm a fan of Perrys, so Purity doesn't do much for me). This place is a bit more expensive than say your average coffee shop, and definitely more so than a Dunkin Donuts, but it's worth every penny. You'll be glad you stopped here, and even more glad to know you helped support a local business run by super nice people :) read more

Probably the best of the 3 Cafe' Kubals, had a nice conversation with the barista that was initiated by my Verve tshirt, and he had actually heard of my small local cafe Insight in Sacramento which I thought was pretty cool. Anyways, I was psyched to get a hand pour in Syracuse (finally), and while the techniques was pretty solid, I wasnt overly thrilled with the cup. I opted for the Ethiopian which, if available, is usually how I get a feel for a cafe. It didn't quite measure up to what I'd expect from a bean from that growing region. Lacked the brightness and light acidity that draws me to Africans, and it felt to me like the beans had been roasted a hair too long past second crack. Sort of a heavy mouthfeel, slighty darker than I feel is optimal. I pciked up a bag of Brazilian to take home, and it was the same sort of deal.. It was nice, but it had gone a bit long in the roaster. I brewed with an Aeropress, and the repeatable result, even after tweaking the grind, temp, and timing, was a slightly bitter cup. Not that it was horrible, just that it could be better. They DO however have a SLAMMIN' chocolate chip cookie, which I highly recommend. And they stock local goods and food items, which I think is pretty cool. Bottom line, I think this will be my go-to when I'm in Syracuse, and you should check it out if you find yourself in town. read more

This place is truly a hidden gem. The Yelp iPhone app once again guided me to something wonderful, which is what Cafe Kubal is. The location is a bit bizarre in someone of a dodgy strip mall-thing, although this makes parking a breeze. The cafe itself is teeny tiny, with a couple of stools for patrons situated along slim counters facing the street and parking lot. But what the place lacks in space is made up entirely in the oh-so-divine espresso beverages and friendly service. I gave a mental thumbs-up to the barista when she asked me if I knew what their macchiato was like when I ordered it (like a proper macchiato and not that Starbucks sugared rubbish), which meant there was a good chance I would be getting something excellent. And it was. Strong, smoky espresso, the perfect, pretty foam that tops only the best, well-prepared drinks. My boyfriend's mocha was also super tasty (and huge for a size small). Sure, this isn't your cheap and dirty cup of diner coffee, so you get what you pay for. But for less than ten bucks, you can get two awesome drinks, a cute little vegan treat (forgot the name, but it was a banana oat cookie thing that was awesome) and avoid the mundane chain crap that would cost you about the same. Posh, cozy, trendy, delicious and in short walking distance from your classes at SU. Starbucks is great and all for a quick caffeine buzz before classes, but if you want to sip coffee with class, Cafe Kubal is the place to go. I remember sitting in Cafe Kubal for a couple of hours talking to my new friends during my first week of college. You could say, I will always have a fond memory of my time here. I ordered the sweet potato with poached egg. It's description sounds amazing, a sweet potato baked with poached egg inside. Topped with pico de gallo, Greek yogurt, and garnished with guac... Granted, I got this to go, but it was nothing like the description. I had a semi warm potato, HARD boiled egg, not poached whatsoever, and the guac was runny. I've had several opportunities to have the coffee here while traveling and it's pretty good, but I don't know why this was such a huge miss on the food. read more

Super corner location, and great service. BUT...would you believe there is a La Marzocco high end espresso machine (impressive) just sitting on the counter that is just used only to warm cups and froth milk? Really? They pull shots from a $499 home Breville Machine from Williams and Sonoma that sits on another back counter. Next time I would just get a pour over. So guys, spend the money to either get the machine fixed, or invest in a new one. read more

I had to hang out for 4 hours waiting for someone taking a test. I found this cafe here on Yelp, and I'm very pleased I did. I didn't try their coffee-- I had the hot chocolate someone else had recommended-- indeed, very nice, and with nice *crema* decoration on the hot chocolate as well! I had food while I was there-- I was impressed. It was not mass-produced junk, but was put together by hand, and very nicely at that. WiFi worked well. Above all, the people running this cafe were VERY FRIENDLY! They were kind hosts to this stranger (me!) hanging out in their shop-- but also clearly do a good job at talking with their regulars. It was our 1st time at Cafe Kubal on James Street. It will also be our last. Two of us stopped in for a sandwich / wrap. The staff provided terrible service and their knowledge, at least the 3 I spoke with were beyond disappointing. Their POS system was not working properly, so they input the order for the billing portion and wrote it out for the cook. They also had to hand write me a receipt, because the printer would not print. I thought the wraps were over priced for the value. We got a turkey and also a beef wrap. The beef wrap had at least decent flavor (not great, but decent), but the turkey wrap was bland. I went and asked for pepper and after 3 of them looked at each other, then around in the back, one said they don't have any and never have any... Really?? No apology, absolutely horrible customer service.... We'll the beef wrap tasted Ok, that was up until I found a piece of plastic bag in my mouth, after chewing for a while... I brought it up and explained & showed it to the clueless staff, once again 3 of them look at me and then each other and then one said "Oh.... I'm sorry.... We'll have to check into that", then gave me a blank stare... So I walked away from the counter... Don't waste your time or money going there.... read more

My boyfriend is from Cali and I wanted to bring him to a nice cozy place where we could get some good coffee and hang out for Xmas eve. As we got there the line was long, but I heard there were a lot of good reviews about this place so we patiently waited. My boyfriend told me to grab seats since a couple decided to leave. I grabbed the seats while he waited in line. Eventually my boyfriend put our orders in. I ordered a small mocha and he ordered a small iced caramel latte. He stood over where you pick up the coffees but leaned against the wall since there were so many people coming back and forth grabbing napkins and their coffee. 15 mins had passed and everyone that ordered after him received their orders. I thought maybe the mocha was just taking really long to make?!!! My boyfriend comes back and sits down and said maybe the lady is just making some food for the customer that was in front of us and will get to us soon. We waited for another 10 minutes and still nothing! I told my boyfriend they probably forgot about us and to go wait again. One of the random ladies that didn't take our order asked us if we ordered anything?! Of course, the other lady who was taking care of us forgot to tell her associate about us. She was in the back working on something and totally forgot we ordered. We waited another 5 minutes to just get drinks. The mocha was alright. It had some nice heart design on it. The latte we ordered tasted decent. Nothing spectacular that should've taken over 30 mins to make. If you're asking if I wold come back? Nope. I take costumer service very seriously and I felt that we were ignored. I understand they were busy, but not one of the three girls working bothered to even ask him if he needed help or if he ordered something. They just smiled and kept serving their other guests. Of course I love to support local areas with their business, but after my experience here I will never go back to cafe kubal. I'm giving them two stars because their service was terrible, although it was Christmas Eve. The design on the mocha was pretty but the taste of the coffees were not anything special. I shall search for other local coffee shops and try them out. In the meantime, Starbucks shall fulfill my coffee cravings for now. read more
