I was actually hesitant to book the train due to mixed reviews, but I am so happy that I did! The food was amazing. I wish they gave you more of the stuffed mushrooms because they were the best ones I have ever had. The portions are small which can be discouraging if you're not used to fine dining, but I was actually stuffed by the end due to the many courses. The main entree was very good, but the carrots were underwhelming. The chocolate mouse felt a little disappointing, but it was refreshing. The rest of the meal was absolutely amazing. Though I listed a few cons, I still absolutely recommend coming because the pros outweigh the cons. The view is a little boring, but I had fun. 7/7/23 My wife and I went on the dinner train. We were sat in the upper section. It was around 80 degrees out so most people on the train were wearing shorts with short sleeves or dresses. The upper section was freezing. All the guests were complaining amongst themselves about how cold they were for the entire ride. When it came to the food I honestly think it was the worst food that we have ever had. I had a few bites of everything and it was all horrible so I decided not to eat it. My wife tried to eat what she could because she didn't want it to be a waste of money. We both ended up sick from the food here, my wife was so sick she had to miss work today. We will never go back. As far as the train ride it is nothing special. It goes over a few rivers or streams which is nice but the rest is peoples front yards, run down business lots, or dense forest so you can't see anything. Overall I would not recommend this to anyone. If this was a restaurant we would have walked out as soon as appetizers hit the table. Even if it was $25 per person it would not be worth it. read more

A decent but expensive experience. The train goes about 10 miles down the track, stops, and comes back. During this time, about 2 hrs overall, you're served a multi course meal. The appetizer I got was very small--two very small stuffed mushrooms. the chicken entree was okay. Dessert was supposed to be chocolate mousse but it wasnt chilled and tasted more like chocolate pudding. overall I thought the meal was subpar for the price. You could cook better at home. The train itself was super nice and that was the best part of the experience. I ordered a "cathedral old fashioned" which the menu said was made the traditional way. old fashions are my favorite cocktail and I've never had one like this. It wasn't traditional; it was a cherry old fashioned. I sent it back and got something else that was good. At the end of the hugely expensive meal we saw that they charged for the old fashioned and when we asked about it the waitress wouldn't take it off the bill. She said you knew what you were getting and unless it was made wrong it was your fault. So for that reason alone, being treated poorly like that, and damaging a customer relationship over a $10 drink, they lost any hope of earning a second try. They changed the set up for covid, only two to a table, maybe more if it's same party as I saw one table with more than two seating. The food is fresh, dinner roll was amazing, raspberry Brie app was good, entree was good as well. Portions are a bit small, however I think that for this experience and unique dinning experience and their service it is completely worth it. It is close by to town and hours are perfect for a sunset dinner atleast in the fall. There are minor adjustments that could be done to make this a five star experience. A great experience for the train buff (my husband) from reservation to check-in to the end of the ride. The station is easy to find and the nice weather made it a pleasure to wait in the garden. The staff was cheerful and helpful from the time we got our boarding pass and still smiling as we left. Clearly they enjoy working at this tourist attraction. We opted for a bottle of wine from a plentiful list although we were enticed by the signature cocktails which several tables in our car opted for. They looked generous and frosty for a summer excursion. We chose the baked Brie and seafood stuffed mushroom as appetizers both of which were very flavorful although not large portions. The warm rolls topped with honey and served with whipped herb butter were devoured by everyone around us. The entree choices were nothing unusual for a catered event but we thoroughly enjoyed our chicken saltimbocca and pork tenderloin. Just the right amount of food to not have leftovers. The five-course meal filled our two-hour ride along the Pemi river. The summer scenery was beautiful on a sunny evening and we would love to repeat this for fall foliage, although the Conway based trains have a better mountain view Other reviews may complain about the high price, but this is dinner AND a train ride folks! I really loved this experience. Our reservation went from 12 to 5 fast and the team at Cafe Lafayette was so kind and accommodating when we were changing the reservations in the days prior. I think I called/emailed over 3 times to reduce/adjust things, which I felt to many would be annoying, but they were always polite and excited for us to come aboard. The food was good, I liked my mushroom appetizer more than the polenta that my spouse had, they made accomodations for his food allergies, and had great options for everyone. Drinks were so good and well priced at $10 each, everyone at the table got ~2 and loved them! The train had good views of the river on both sides, had some fun folks waving at us as we passed by, and is decorated well on the inside. The food was delicious but the portions were very small. My fiancé and I ended up going out to eat after because we were still hungry. Mind you, I'm 110lbs and pretty tall for a girl. The service was great and the drinks were really good as well. The end was weird when you left a tip because they don't separate the food from the train tickets so we ended up tipping 20% on everything. They know what they are doing. Also, one side of the train has beautiful views of the woods and fields, while the other side has views of the roads, highway, construction sites and dumps. Far from scenic. So I was figured the prices I seen on-line was for June. I was surprised when I got my bill for almost $350.00 when I was figuring a little over $200.00 without a tip yet. "This was our second time and it was as wonderful as the first time. The staff are always welcoming and friendly. And I am especially impressed with how well the chef accommodates dietary needs. I am gluten sensitive and lactose intolerant. She personally came to our table and talked to me about my options and what she could do to prepare an amazing meal with my restrictions in mind. Even the desert was custom for my needs. No other chef has ever personally taken such good care in what they prepare for their guests. I am so impressed and delighted. We had a lot of high hopes for this dinner train but sadly it did not meet our expectations. First, the food was just "ok." The multiple courses were nice, but the appetizer/salad portions were very small. The chicken was by far the winner out of all of the dinner options. The steak was a close second and the salmon was a bit fishy and not good. Second, we paid for the dome dinner seating which we thought meant glass all around as well as table seating. Instead we were greeted with normal windows on the side and a ceiling that was not glass at all. In addition, the seating is booth only in the dome and that was very uncomfortable. It was also disappointing that the design aesthetic in the dome seating was outdated circa 1980's LIRR style. Whereas the "cheaper" seating cars looked for classic with actual tables for seating. Third, the "scenery" was very disappointing. You drive into the base of the white mountains to board the train and its track is to go directly south away from the mountains and scenery. In fact, the "scenery" you get to enjoy on this train is mostly back yards of peoples homes, side streets, and a golf course. Not worth taking a picture of anything you see nor even paying attention out of the windows themselves. Fourth, the trip the train takes is one way down track and one way back. There is no turning around so that one side of the train gets to see the other sides views. Overall, this train ride was very disappointing especially for the price point. For $120/person, the trip and food quality is just not worth it. As a group we all walked away with the same feeling...something we would not recommend and would definitely not do again. read more

All who have visited Lincoln NH have seen this dinner train located at the towns exit. Finally my wife and I tried it out. We reserved a table online and surprised how busy it was once we arrived. Upon checking in you will see the dinner menu and order your selections with the waitress on the train. We both ordered the steak, potatoes and asparagus. They inform that all steaks are a medium rare. Mine was...my wife was a medium. The steak was tender and quite nice taste. I would recommend this dish. Drink orders are taken once all are seated and fresh rolls with cinnamon butter are a nice touch. Salads were a bit small but flavorful with a vinaigrette. My wife's salad didn't quite have enough dressing for her liking. The Cheddar bisque was a bit over powering and would be better if more bread was provided. The scallop and bacon was nice and would recommend. The overall experience is fun and a nice social event. Views from the train are mixed from nice scenic rivers and bridges to not so nice areas and just a lot of trees. Overall, a nice experience and would recommend...I upped the review to a 4 because heck your on a train having a drink, dinner and meeting nice folks. My first experience dining on the Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train just also happened to be their first annual wild game night, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Appetizers included a wild boar sausage and alligator gumbo and bison ribs with handmade black pepper pappardelle. The gumbo had just the right amount of heat and a conundrum of different textures, making nearly every spoonful different. Ribs were good but the pasta was amazing, delicately light and coated with a rich jus that I couldn't get enough of. Everyone got the salad course, which consisted of greens, goat cheese, blueberries, marinated peaches and thinly sliced duck that was so succulent. The amuse bouche was this adorable scoop of blackberry and passion fruit sorbet. More tart than sweet, but the perfect little bite before our entrees. The main course was a choice between bourbon marinated elk chops, and a Hawaiian moon fish. My date and I both got the elk and were anything but disappointed. The meat was sliced thin and fanned over a crispy potato croquette and dressed with this sweet, rich bourbon sauce (that I wish there was more of!) For dessert we had a chocolate chili cheesecake and a vanilla panna cotta. The cheesecake was good, with a hint of background heat and not too sweet but the panna cotta stole the show. Served with biscotti and a berry purée the combination of the three were out of this world. Hands down best dessert I've had. Overall the experience on the train was memorable. Owners Mike and Ali were graciously attentive and friendly, from casual conversation to crumbing our table to taking our picture and everything inbetween. The food was served timely and presentations were beautifully whimsical. Clearly picture worthy! Baked scallops perfect. The pork dumplings fell short; we found the filling bland, and the sauce too intense and gummy. While the classic potato dip with andouille sausage was tasty, it was a little heavy... I might have appreciated it better apres ski Attention needs to be paid to the seating... the tables and chairs were pretty pedestrian... really didn't reflect the quality and upscale food. Amazing food! Such a fun experience and all of the staff are super friendly. I come to Lincoln all the time and whenever this train is open I make sure to book it! I've never had anything here that wasn't absolutely awesome!! The rolls are warm when served and fresh out of the oven with an herb butter on the side, I have gotten the dates twice, the first time I went it was totally random but they ended up being so incredibly delicious that I had to get them again. They are filled with mascarpone and chorizo and wrapped with prosciutto with a tomato jam, highly recommend!!! The salad is usually pretty similar every time I have gone, and the chicken is always cooked perfectly and I hear great things about the other dishes from people I am dining with. The view from the train is absolutely beautiful especially during the fall with the colorful leaves. The only complaint I would have is the although u board around 4:15 and get back around 7:15-7:30 the train doesn't actually start moving until about 5 and there is no food until it begins to move meaning that for the first 45 minutes you kind of just have to wait but during this time they do serve a wide variety of drinks to sip on. Courses are served in the order of bread, appetizer, salad, palette cleanser, entrees, coffee, and desert, drinks served throughout the whole ride. The food was what you would expect at a budget friendly wedding but the bill did not match. You don't come to Café Lafayette for the culinary skills. It more for the unique experience. It definitely does an excellent job of transporting people into a 1950s train ride ambiance. I was lucky enough to sit in the dome because it gets reserved quickly. It was just my partner and me. It is Covid times, so we were able to get our own seats at no extra cost. I can not imagine anyone having to share their seat with strangers in the dome. The thought of it seems pretty uncomfortable. The staff is delightful and attentive. For our first-course meal, warm bread was served with herbed butter. The star for this dish was the butter. It had a delicate sweetness to it, but I couldn't make out the taste of the herb. I was famished, so I devoured it. It was delicious. The appetizer was exquisite. I ordered STUFFED DATES with the chorizo and mascarpone stuffed dates with a sweet tomato dipping sauce (this is the appetizer to order). My partner ordered the stuffed mushrooms, and it was meh. The salad was nothing special. The sorbet- the palate cleanser was excellent. As an entrée, I ordered the ARGENTINIAN FLAT IRON- Medium- The waitress said they usually serve it medium-rare. I don't like rare, so I asked for medium, and I got medium-well. Maybe that what I get for not going for medium-rare. The steak was disappointing, mainly by the interpretation of the chimichurri. It was mediocre. My partner ordered the CHICKEN CORDON BLEU- this was excellent. Given a chance, I would have ordered this instead of the steak. For this dessert, we were given a cream puff with chocolate ganache. I was not a fan, it was dry, had an eggy flavor, and forgot to provide me with a fork. Maybe I got an old batch. Making a reservation for two aboard the CAFE LAFAYETTE DINNER TRAIN was a pretty big decision for me. I had never spent that kind of money on a "dinner experience" and I wanted to do something special to celebrate our second year anniversary. Being a huge "Foodie" I was definitely lulled by the exquisite menu that "CAFE LAFAYETTE" seemed to offer. Of course, I don't like the idea of writing this review but after speaking with someone who claimed to be the owner/operator, I have decided to share my story. You know, in case there is anyone else out there who may be considering this experience to be a "pretty big decision" also! Let me try to have a sense of humor about this like my husband and I had during our dining experience in order to make the best of it. We drove 2 hours North and arrived early. Checking in was quite easy but I would blame that on the Covid regulations. We received our assigned seat, purchased some memorabilia from the gift shop (and excitedly) boarded the train. We had NEVER done anything like this before! So I guess, if you wanna spend 100 bucks (per person) to take 50/50 chance that you may (or may not) get one of the lucky seats (with a view) than by all means - Roll baby, roll! If, like us, you're stuck on the not-so-lucky-side (that we were on) then you'll be forced to peer past someone else's romantic dinner date (like a creep) by trying to get a peak of the view. Chug Chug! "Look! It's the the Hood of New Hampshire", declares one guest as we rolled past numerous STORAGE UNITS and PRIMITIVE campsites! Wow! I have never paid this much money to see something like THIS before! After counting - One, two, maybe three spots of land (that showed us an interesting perspective for glancing at storage units) I have to encourage you...hold on. The view you've been waiting for upon the Cafe Lafayette... Farmland! Farmland that's naturally littered with cow-dung including (the added touch) of abandoned vehicles (for necessary animal shelter). In that past, I have paid less than ten bucks to get the same sort of view from a commuter rail riding East from Fitchburg to Boston. So if you enjoy this sort of view, check it out! As if the views (and the predicament) aren't terrible enough - The dinner is even worse. They stretch your meal over the entire trip - serving one plate every (I don't know?) 20 Minutes or so? Each plate being the smallest of portions. One (piece) of an appetizer, Three bites of salad (smaller than a regular side salad) and the biggest dinner roll you've ever seen, so enjoy it! Now, what about the entree, you ask? THE BIG REVEAL, THE MOMENT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR? ONE chicken thigh covered in a sauce that appears as vomit, soggy mashed potatoes slid right up against that with cubed butternut squash slid right up against that. Parsley sprinkled about. Hungry, who could resist? I may be a critic by now but the FLAT IRON WHISKEY CREAM (as stated on the menu) was actually a brown gravy with blue cheese globes on top. And, the only thing worse than serving flat iron steak as a main course is serving less than an OUNCE of flat iron steak as a main course. I mean, I have seen more steak (added as an extra) on a salad before. All in all - They can't say that they're outrageous price is because of the views because the views aren't worth paying for (especially when the Kancamagus Highway is basically the same street), And they can't say they charge an arm-and-a-leg because their food is "top notch" when their serving you the lowest meat on the meat-pole and in the smallest portions possible while choosing to skimp-out on the salad and apps... Their website promises "something totally different" that also promises their guests "will enjoy a dining experience of a lifetime" (quotes taken right from their website, September 27th, 2020) I guess that's true for all the worst of reasons. I would give a rating of 10 stars if it were possible. This was the BEST experience especially during fall foliage season. The staff was extremely professional and made sure that everything was done to everyone's liking. All of the five courses were to the highest standards and they offered a few choices for the appetizers and entrees. The service was top notch with perfect timing between each course, not too early and not waiting either with great big band jazz music playing in the overhead speakers giving an incredibly relaxed ambience and made for a perfect evening. A new restaurant which is the winter home of the Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train. My wife and I had a great experience. We ordered 4 different menu items to share, and that was more than enough for us. The smoked salmon, stuffed dates, and beer battered fries were outstanding. The gnocchi was only very good. And the apple tart was the perfect finishing touch. They only have 2 beers on tap (though very good ones), but a good selection of bottled ones. The wine list looked interesting. And to make the experience a little more complete, the background music was perfect. This place is now at the top of our list and we can't wait to go back. read more

It isn't about the scenery...which as Boston natives...we'd seen long ago before ever getting on the train. It's about the food, the service, the fun of being there with people you've never met before. Even more about bringing friends/family along so they can experience it too. The food and service this year was good, which is why the 4 stars. It wasn't "great"...but remember this, the owners here are trying to duplicate something that just isn't part of train travel anymore. Okay, I hope I can describe an evening for you on the Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train. We decided to do a quick weekend getaway. Drove 5.5 hours from NJ to experience the dinner train and enjoy other sites in and around Lincoln. This was our first time experiencing a dinner train. First, the staff is great and very friendly. We boarded the train at 4:15pm. Before the train leaves the station, you are given some instructions, explanation of the menu and drink order is taken. They have a special drink selections or a full bar for you to enjoy. The drink and food order was taken before with left the station. At this time the train left at 5pm. The train travels very slow, but a nice ride. You must remember this is dinner train and not a sight seeing tour, although you will see some sites. The total train ride was 2:15: plus the 45 minutes in the beginning; total 3 hours on board the train, plus they let you tour the train when the train returns. It goes 1 hour forward and 1 hour backwards. You can visit the chefs/kitchen car; the other dinning cars. The dome eating area is a little smaller than the lower levels, but still looked comfortable and talking to others who ate up there were very happy and satisfied with the experience. I loved the trains decor and environment. Very clean. Beautiful table setting with little extras. Fresh flowers and candle light. They play soft music, Sinatra, Martin, Bennett, Glen Miller, Darrin, Buble' etc. you get the picture. Okay the 5 course meal is as other describe, but you leave that table comfortable. A honey glazed dinner roll, appetizer, salad, main course, sorbet, and desert. They give you choices of apps/meals. I will agree with other reviews, the app and sorbet was very small, but apps are suppose to be special as a starter and not overwhelming, and the sorbet to clean your palate. The crab salad app was tasty, the salmon was excellent (cooked to perfection) with a glaze, and the desert was delicious. If you break it down, this dinner would cost you about $40/45 else where and the other $45 is for the train/help. Wine (glass) $8/10 - drinks about the same. Remember you have two chefs, station help and waitress servers (Amanda was great), bartender, the engineer, and other train help, all to give you a special time aboard. There was a young couple in the next booth and this was their 3rd time dinning that we heard. Would I drive 5.5 hours again, no, but if in the area, I would dine with Cafe Lafayette again. Dress is casual, although some dress less than casual. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable time. Just forget the reviews and go and enjoy the evening with someone special or friends/family. We took the dinner train on the fourth of July and sat in the top car. Overall we had a great experience - the food was fantastic, the drinks were great, and the service was excellent. Our waitress enjoyed picking on my husband and we all had a good laugh. The cheesecake that night was delicious and the overall history and ambiance of the train was great. I'm not sure if they ever head north instead of south on the tracks but it would be good to know that as I'd really like some north scenery. The only thing I can't say I'm "sold" on is that the value of the train is $90 PP. I don't have complaints about the night itself but after the amount of food we received and the fact that you are in New Hampshire I do believe it is overpriced. As others have said I have done other prix fixed menu's including those in cities and more expensive towns and they have been cheaper or in line with this. read more

Oct 16th 2015 Went on the dinner train with friends tonight. We loved it. Food was great. Service was good. We had great view of fall foliage and pemi river.. It got dark on the return ride. We have been a fan of Cafe Lafayette for years. This is the second year of The Depot, offering tapas dining in (appropriately enough), the depot of the dinner train. We arrived on a Friday evening and were offered upstairs seating. This area is delightful, warm and cozy for a winter's eve. The four of us were given couch seating, which offered even more comfort and ambiance for the meal. The wait staff was very attentive and explained the tapas selections. She recommended one tapas per person for starters. This is a good idea to begin with, but the food was so good we had to have more! All of the selections are deliciously prepared by the same chef of the marvelous Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train. They are visually appealing, nicely proportioned and a joy to experience. We started with the roasted garlic plate and stuffed mushrooms. Then on to the Mediterranean Fig Salad and Beef stew. It was all wonderful and easily shared. To top it off, for dessert we had the Manhattan Midnight Chocolate Cake, infused with bourbon (save the cherry for last!) All in all, we had a wonderful time. The only problem will be deciding what you want to have, because all the selections are so good. We will certainly be back. read more
